King Cobra

Coil up, friends 🐍 I was graciously provided with an advanced preview of King Cobra months ago, so I’ve had time to develop my thoughts. I've got quite a bit to say, as King Cobra is my favorite fragrance in years and I think it’s going to be an unprecedented hit for the Zoologist house. These reptiles have long been one of my favorite animals, and so it’s only fitting that I’d be (snake) charmed by this. This scent has fangs. It hisses, coils, and then leaps out of the bottle to bite with enough deadly force to leave you paralyzed in its rapture. King Cobra is an unparalleled masterpiece and a kingly scent for sure, but it’s so potent that I’m not certain King Cobra is the most appropriate name for it. Perhaps spitting cobra would’ve been more apt, as this scent sprays out of the bottle with enough of a venomous punch to potentially blind its victi...errr, I mean, wearer. King Cobra is the most artistically and stunningly creative Zoologist release since Squid. It should certainly satisfy long-term fans who have griped that Zoologist has become too “mainstream” in recent years. I can particularly detect the notes of petitgrain, fig leaf, black tea, leather, soil, plenty of incense and, even though it isn’t a listed note, I swear there’s a hint of eucalyptus in there as well. This fragrance smells like you packed all of those ingredients into a gigantic bong with plenty of marijuana, lit it up, and took a humongous toke. Here's where King Cobra’s poison begins to take effect: the ganja accord is certainly there. Just like how snakes frighten people, that pot scent will scare some people off and it isn’t for everyone: it’s polarizing as all hell. But I, personally, enjoy the scent of weed...so long as it isn’t too overpowering. And Zoologist founder Victor Wong and perfumer Prin Lomros have deftly weaved in the ganja accord, with aplomb and bravura, to make it a main player but not the only highlight. Kudos to all – this is a mazel tov and a Molotov cocktail of a fragrance. There’s something so intoxicating about this scent although it’s challenging to accurately describe, and it can slither and shift into different profiles depending on the mood. I read somewhere that King Cobra smells like the perfume of Aladdin’s villain, Jafar. I love that, but let me offer an alternative: this is the scent of Neve Campbell and Denise Richards battling it out in the swamp amongst the humidity-soaked palm trees of 1998’s Wild Things. Or it’s the scent of a vampiric Grace Jones in 1986’s Vamp, while she performs a strip dance and writhes on top of a Keith Haring statue in a grungy and downtrodden club: dangerous, sultry, formidable, intoxicating, and slightly forbidden. Or, it’s the scent of Indiana Jones in the snake pit: a jungle adventure from a lost time and world. Others have said it smells like snakeskin or hot poisonous sand. I’ll agree that there is a reptilian scent to this that conjures a snake shedding a leathery green skin, but I sadly can’t detect those desert sands, despite how much I would love to (side note: Zoologist scents are often based on an animals’ habitat, and king cobras typically reside in forests, bamboo thickets, mangrove swamps and rivers, rather than the actual desert like, say, a spitting cobra would – trust me, I Googled). To me, though, King Cobra most embodies the aesthetic of urban decay with aromatic indulgences. It smells like a grungy 1990s head shop was shutdown and recently reopened as an upscale spa. It reminds me of what the most witchy parts of New Orleans smell like, or how 90s-era Thompson Street in NYC’s Greenwich Village must’ve smelled. Now, I wasn’t in NYC to experience that period, but there’s a word for nostalgia for a time or place you haven’t known: anemoia. And King Cobra smacks of anemoia. Back on that Thompson Street, there’s a voodoo or fortune teller downstairs. That head shop on the corner, which resembles more of a druggy apothecary, has downtrodden brick walls inside and incense burning in the corner. Next door, the rock n’ roll record store has a tattered poster of a cobra – its hood flared, fangs bared and tongue flicking. King Cobra is unisex and can charm people year-round. But it requires confidence, vamp, and that level of charm to pull off. With potency of up to 12 hours, when the high from this finally wears off, King Cobra is addictive enough to leave you scrambling for the anti-venom. In five words or less: A kingly sss-scent with BITE.

The time has come for me to attempt a review. I say "attempt" because there's no way I can even hope to do better than previous reviewer Scratch & Sniff below. Go read that! As for me, when I saw this announced, I literally gasped. I'm a reptile guy. From geckos to dragons. The cobra was always a bit of a totem animal to me (not to mention a Hindu friend's mother once told me, "you carry yourself with the confidence of raja"). So, as the emblematic predator of the reptile world, did King Cobra succeed? Yes! Yes, it did. I expected this to have bite and it does. At first spray, you get greeted by a pungent, camphorous, minty cannabis-forward concoction. This is the lethal strike. The cobra's bite. It hisses and wraps itself around you. There's anticipation but also thrill. The smoke thickens as an earthiness comes in as the cobra's venom takes its toll and gets settled in you, you can smell its leathery coils squeezing and constricting around you. That's where things took an unexpected turn for me. I expected it to get more and more intense, but no. As it went on, I got comfy. The cobra wasn't feeding on me, it was becoming a part of me. As the beautiful, comforting warmth of balsamic incense brought the experience to its end, I had become one with it. I was King Cobra. And it was glorious. I honestly found it relatively tame for Zoologist, but then I've gotten used to earthy, cannabis heavy perfumes lately. I found out I love that camphorous, spicy mentholated vibe cannabis gives to perfumes. So to me, it was comfy and I'm ecstatic because I would have been mortified if I didn't like it. Again, Prin's work here is stellar, the blend is ridiculously smooth and the notes morph around effortlessly. It lasts quite a while as well, a good 8+ hours on me and projects surprisingly strong at first, so do be careful in tight spaces. I'd say this is more early Spring and Fall or mild Winter days, but honestly you could get away with it on Summer days when it's not too hot, thanks to its minty greenness. Another stunner and I hope this is a big hit for the brand.

Sampling King Cobra, the latest release from Zoologist Perfumes, a fresh, green, but somewhat spicy and dark blend with animalic and earthy elements, a very curious mix with accords of camphor and cannabis standing out quite a bit, but overall, a hearty center of petitgrain, black tea, moss, and resins. Its note listing is so interesting that it merits review in its entirety, for sure, and I really detect a very well-blended intersection of notes and genres, the main standouts being the slightly-funky-yet-mostly-classy deployment of cannabis, which is definitely less substantial than in, say, Xerjoff Golden Dallah, or perhaps even RDZ Parfums Philadelphia, but still noticeable in (in my opinion) a positive way. This is among my favorite of the recent releases from the house, and I like it as a companion to the fresher, more eucalyptus-preoccupied (fittingly) Koala, one of my all-time favorites from the house. King Cobra is expectedly a little more daring, more dangerous, higher-performing, with perhaps a little less versatility but overall a bit better for cooler weather, and more so to stand out. I love it as an addition to this already diverse, deep, interesting catalogue, and I expect it will sell very well as a great balance between crowd-pleasing agreeability and experimental edginess. Like much of the line, King Cobra is extrait de parfum concentration and priced at $175 for 60ml, sold via the Canadian-based house website as well as a number of US boutiques, including Perfumology. Only the house website sells the travel size, unfortunately. 8 out of 10

The marketing story for King Cobra, and many reviews, have leaned toward the predatorial/venomous/threatening aspects of the namesake. But I interpret this one quite differently. It's true that the fragrance opens with a daring and daunting flash of dusty green, what people have called the "bite," before it progressively reveals cumin and amber alongside Prin's signature realistic soil note. The amber in this stage, though, is deceptively mild, almost sweet—I think there's also musk here—and when it combines with the tea note and cumin, what I smell is a wonderfully cozy and subtle chai accord. Totally belying the nearly-caustic green notes in the opening, there's intimacy and calm right under the grass. But it always stays half-hidden, disappearing and reappearing amidst the cool resins and camphor. On Wikipedia, I learned that king cobras, though they seem "fearsome," are not typically aggressive toward humans: they much prefer to peacefully slink off to a hiding place when encountered, not to hunt you like a movie monster. Victor and Prin have brilliantly evoked this aspect of the animal in the development of this fragrance. King Cobra is intimidating and wild, certainly not playful, but not actually to be feared. Its heart is peaceful, companionable, and lovely. These contrasting facets in King Cobra, the second-to-none quality of each accord, and the way the composition expresses *an idea* of the animal, elevate this as one of the most fulfilling Zoologist releases IMO. (But I also just love grass, moss, and cumin, so draw your own conclusions :P )

Let me start with a quick stint on the soapbox. One comment often made about Zoologist perfumes is ‘I can’t imagine where I would wear it.’ The only situations in which I can imagine a perfume being inappropriate have nothing to do with the character of the perfume, but everything with it being a perfume in the first place: i.e. perceptual input that cannot be avoided by others. Why is it better to wear a heavy amber at an evening formal attire party than in the morning at the gym - because people expect it? Would anyone annoyed by the scent at the gym not be annoyed by it at the party? Anyways. Let’s just say that I am an unsophisticated person who wears perfume for themselves, whenever I feel like it, unless I will be in a situation where scent will disturb others. And I like this perfume a lot, and I have been wearing it a lot. The opening is intense and never ceases to surprise me - a blast of green that flickers between bitter and sweet, cool and warm. Then on me the scent recedes into a delicate floral. When I wonder if I should reapply, 3-4 hours in, it blooms into this lovely sweet, lemony-green, powdery scent. I am familiar with how all the listed notes are supposed to smell in their individual form, and I find this perfume very well blended, even if it is not at all linear. Don’t be put off by the inclusion of the ‘ganja accord’ - there is nothing dank or potty about it.

This is absolutely INCREDIBLE. To address the weed note: I didn’t notice the “ganja accord” note before ordering and when I noticed it on the packaging I was a little worried; on paper, the weed note is certainly noticeable, but at least on my skin, it doesn’t read as weed to me at all. On the chance that it would read as weed to others, I’ve avoided wearing it to work, but I am growing more confident that it’d be fine. Onto the rest of the review: This is so hypnotizing for lack of a better term. It’s like you’re the king cobra being hypnotized by a snake charmer. It’s spicy, dry, and has warm notes so intense it reads hot. It has a beautiful dry grass note and such complex spice notes. Smelling it definitely invokes a venomous sting that, frankly, I find super sexy. It smells dangerous and it feels empowering to wear. Truly an incredible fragrance. I strongly believe that fragrance doesn’t have a gender, but to best describe it, I’d say this is very traditionally masculine and I rated it as such, but I think this could be worn by anyone.

This is a special one. A very heavy hitting incense scent- in my opinion this is thematically partners with Camel, as where Camel is dry, sweet, and warm, King Cobra is cool, spicy, and humid. A very unique incense blend, not at all like a warmer resinous incense scent. King Cobra is very alluring and has a heavy mystical vibe. A kind of scent that's a bit heavy, like sitting in a den with dimmed lights and smoke floating throughout. It's very herbaceous without smelling too "green," as some "greener" scents can smell like lawn clippings and shaving cream. This is not a soapy blend. It's a very alluring and mysterious kind of scent. I think it's very wearable but also quite distinct. I don't have really any experience with cannabis but I can smell it in this perfume- it's not skunky, though. Really only the more herbal notes. Time will tell with sampling whether or not this perfume is too heavy for daily wear, but I could see this being a great winter scent with Camel as its warmer weather companion. It's definitely a statement perfume.

I really enjoy the spicy, smoky earthiness of King Cobra. For me the drydown is sweeter than expected; after a few hours the patchouli stands out, and the sweet citrus notes linger. it's not sweet–sweet, it's just sweeter than I expected—not in a bad way, at all. After an hour or two, feels like it gets warmer with the amber kind of "heating" the citrus fruits, while retaining the earthy, smoky characteristics that make this fragrance distinctive. I found it to be more wearable than other people have, it seems, especially with the sweet drydown. With the earthiness of King Cobra, to me it's a smokier, spicier counterpart to Chipmunk, which is one of my favorite fragrances; it mirrors the marketing nicely of these two scents being creatures that are active on forest floors and among the trees. King Cobra lives in a spicier, dare I say, more exotic forest. I found the longevity to be moderate, about 5 hours. Will probably buy when I finish one of my smoky scents, just to avoid some smoky-note redundancy in my lineup.

I really never thought I’d like a scent like this as much as I do. (I say this as a Rabbit/Harvest Mouse/Bee lover, also as someone who does not like sharp notes and heavy citrus) The opening feels crisp and sour and I would associate this with the venom of a King Cobra. After the opening notes fade, it dries down earthy, mildly sweet and “damp” in a way. It definitely conjures up the image of a rainforest floor: moss, damp soil, an abundance of foliage and plants, humid mist and fog. The amber and incense warm this up a bit to make it more comforting. This is a warm thriving rainforest. I like it a lot and I may even cave and get a bottle or travel spray. I sadly spilled most of my 1ml sample vial, but my comforter has been smelling like King Cobra for days which is nice. Edit: I caved a got a full bottle. I spilled my sample on my bed and it was whispering to me at night for days. There’s a Garden of Eden joke in there somewhere....

Wow. This is an instant love. King Cobra feels like a journey from the rainforest canopy down to the ground. The fragrance opens with a sharp, verdant bite with loads of venomous camphor. It smells simultaneously medicinal and like I’m surrounded by lush vegetation. I quickly notice a little whiff of leather which helps ground things and provides a hint of what’s to come. On my skin, the camphor sticks around permanently and melds beautifully with the middle notes of soil and black tea. Things continue to become deeper, darker, and richer. Now I’m slithering through the moist dirt. This transition is incredibly well blended. The overall vibe of King Cobra is a smoooooooth earthy embrace. It’s such a treat that the fragrance transforms over time while also allowing some of the earlier notes to linger right until the end. Mysterious, unique, and captivating. 10/10.

Breakdown: The frangance opens up strongly with a fresh green acidic citrusy aroma . Then, slowly, it develops into a zesty dump-soiled incense that lingers for a good amount of time . Picturization: It is like I have visited a pilgrimage where someone have lightened up an essential oil of a mysterious citrus. Opinion: It is one of the best zoologist's fragrances, very unique, quite wearable in special occasions. Its development is amazing and very smooth from the beginning to the drydown. The cannabis aroma is discreet and well-blended with the rest. The soil and the incense are the main protagonists in the drydown. Although the dumped soil is prominent, it isn't scary and dirty, but fresh, lively, zingy and acidic. Even if you don't like soily scents, you should definitely sample this. Virtuosic construction , the JPG Le Male of the king Cobra VII !!!

An immediate love. Opens fresh and green without being artificially cheery: fresh grass is given an incredible lift by a camphor that smells like tea tree oil, but both notes are kept rooted by an oddly pleasant soil tincture. Somehow, there's a humid, sauna-like quality to King Cobra. I can't stop smelling my hand. Will definitely be returning to this one. Update: after a few wears, I still love the scent, but performance is terrible. It may be my skin, but I don't get more than a few hours before 1 spray disappears completely. I'm tempted to douse myself in a 6-spray shower and just revel in the enjoyment of this fragrance, but the price makes that prohibitive. I'm used to wearing Orto Parisi and Amouage, so my standards for performance may be unrealistic. Regardless, King Cobra is a work of art, and so enjoyable if you favor green scents.

i have been in a bit of a fragrance rut. life has overwhelmed me, and while i love the scents i wear, i have felt totally ambivalent about writing or thinking about them too deeply. i simply perfume myself in the mornings and move on with the worries of the day. but this perfume has washed away the hard-packed clay soil, removing any trace of the rut! i am a sucker for a sharp scent, and between the bite of the camphor to the almost metallic tang of rich wet soil, this is the machete hacking away at pungent verdancy, the warm sun suffusing thick and muggy air. that sharpness, too, is perhaps the sharpness of fangs, hovering just by your neck. don’t get too close too fast, it says, lest you get bit. a statement, to be sure, but imminently wearable and immensely pleasurable. a sweet, venomous kiss

Zoologist has created their first perfume with cannabis! It’s a very green, earthy scent. You can definitely smell hemp, but it’s not overpowering. It’s beautifully blended with other green notes that make it stand out. In the beginning, you’ll notice camphor, citrus, and cumin. The citrus is probably from petitgrain, tangerine, and a very bright pomelo. As the fragrance develops, it becomes more and more earthy, with notes of incense and moss. After a couple of hours, it settles into a deep, rich base with a beautiful amber and incense. I perceive a couple of stages, from juicy greenery to a very dry, dusty earthy-incense-mossy base. King Cobra is a lovely addition to the Zoologist family (BIG love from me), but as always with Zoologist try before you buy.

Quite original fugere here. Opens up super fresh and humid, camphor very in your face, esperidate are in the back but present, the ganja flavour is not so prominent. While evolving into mid range cumin makes it a little more dirty, spicy and bitter. Can't pick up any "tea note" even if listed. From mid to drydown the fragance resonate between humid soil that goes with a slight leathery sent, the freshiness of the remaining camphor and the spiciness of incense and patchouli. Vetiver is explored both in his earthyness blending with the humidity of soil accord and his high notes that fixate the general green feeling of the fragrance. Never smelt a similiar fugere to be honest, was love at first wear for me.

earthy, full of wet soil, leaves and moss, brightened by a tart citrus, and then immediately brought back under with incense and spice. it is deep, it is dank, it is rooting around in the dirt. it's medicinal and herbaceous: leafy, gently fruity, full of citrus and green spice; and dark: full of incense, smoke, pine like notes, woods and leaves, and a base that truly does smell like wet dirt. this scent is magical, in the purest form of the word: it smells like bundles of herbs in a hut, deep in the jungle, a kettle awaiting some form of medicinal brew to be made. outside the open windows is that jungle, damp floors full of creatures going about their own existence.

I thought this would smell venomous, but instead it smells like soil tincture with warm undertones. I do not get sharpness. I do get a herbaceous and welcoming opening. This is not a dirty scent. The Zoologist editions that I have worn thus far do not actually live up to the brand image. They seem so offbeat and offensive but something is so familiar, even comfortable. King Cobra is beautiful and I love to wear KC more often than just casually. It is only favorable to me that people do not rate KC as mass-appealing nor as a compliment-getter. I am not a mass-appealing person either. But...it is not offensive at all! Where do I get my offensive scents now?! 9/10

The decant of the scent I received was amazing, strong projection and longevity. The composition is incredible - gets you in a nasty mood. The scent matches the snake picture perfectly - glorious snake. That’s what ‘venomous’ would smell like in my opinion. But the smell from a full bottle - very toned down version of the scent I fell in love with, picture some baby snake. The notes are weaker, the composition is smoother and more civil, compared to the smell from the decant. And the scent is only from 2024, so couldn’t be a reformulation. No idea what happened, but I’ll stock on more decants, probably.

YES!!! Yes yes yes yes yes. This is what I have been searching for with green scents. Yes. Oh I cannot communicate how happy I am. I remember reading a comment on here about it being for a guy who has some lava lamps and would be the kind of dude who unironically wears a cologne named King Cobra and I have realized that guy is actually me. It's got such a pow effect. Green, sharp, not medicinal though. Very animal, very wet, kind of gross in the best way. Mold? I'm not sure but it's great. For once moss is actually moss and not the IDEA of moss. It really gives me so much joy, how fun!

King Cobra is powerful and quite wearable for a Zoologist perfume. I smell bright, tangy spices paired with dark, boozy woods; it's clean as a South Asian spiced soap, yet dirty as wet soil. So much depth and complexity, and the regal snake concept is well portrayed. The only downside is, the fragrance's core is very reminiscent of Rhinoceros (2020), Bat (2020) and Sloth. Prin Lomros' signature DNA takes over after the top notes have gone. His scents kind of end up being flankers of each other. King Cobra is the most impressionistic and refined of his Zoologist creations though!
