Macaque

So I spent the day wearing Macaque then logged onto fragrantica and was surprised to see the relatively low rating of 3.57. Decided to read the reviews and they are all over the place; some say it’s the most wearable Zoologist, others say not. Some people pick up on banana notes, others can’t smell the green apple; some think this is a weird scent and so on. And I’m in partial agreement: Macaque is weird, but it’s also incredibly intriguing. First and foremost this is a green scent sitting on a bed of fruit. A lot of overripe fruit. This fruit compote is not juicy or sweet as it’s been sitting on the jungle floor for too long and is starting to ferment. There’s a dusty, almost powdery quality to Macaque which points toward synthetics but still oddly appealing. It’s as if all the fruit — green apple, banana, passion fruit and others have melded in flavor, combining to make one boozy cocktail. Surrounding this fruity drink is a lot of rainforest moss, grass, and swamp land. After my walk through the jungle I end up drinking an exotic blend of hot tea. I can smell the wood of the hut I’m sitting in. Maybe someone has just sprayed bug spray but I can also smell food cooking. None of this is meant to be a negative, I’m simply in awe. There’s an otherworldly quality to this blend, here the perfumer has achieved my highest praise. Conceptually Macaque is a home run. The challenging part would be finding an occasion to wear this unique fragrance.

If you love galbanum, and you like perfumes such as Chanel N.19 or even Bas de Soie, Macaque is an absolute must-try! The combo of the crisp, sour, Granny-Smith apple with a sharp, fragrant galbanum is superb. This was love at first sniff for me. It is a massive green perfume that is extremely fresh and vibrant. As the perfume dries down, I get a hefty dose of green tea and a nice bit of mossiness that really rounds the fragrance out. In the base I get something vanilla-like, and it brings just the slightest hint of creaminess. I don't know if white oud is a naturally occuring thing, or if it's a synthetic accord, but maybe that's what I detect. This is such a beautiful and super-unique take on galbanum. I never would have thought to pair the plant with fruit. Despite the artistic take on it, it smells surprisingly classy. Lasted a solid 12 hours on me. High on my Want list (Update: bought it). It's such an uplifting scent--like monkeys swinging from vines!

Oh this is lovely. Weird, but lovely. Extremely juicy, almost sour fruit in the opening. My right eye went all crazy with the juiciness as i was sniffing this. The apple is almost as the one in Panda, but more sour and blended more green and less sweet (even though Panda itself is far from sweet). The galbanum is indeed the star, there’s a herbal bitterness here, but it’s also blended to create a lovely composition, albeit slightly synthetic to my nose. BUT the synthetic vibe is so strange, because its a result not of synthetic elements, but of “natural” elements amped up so much, that they become synthetic...if that makes sense. Another thing: something in this reminds me of Anais Anais. Less floral and less “stinky” Anais.

This is for the original macaque. Really wonderful green and tea scent without being generic. Opened with a bit of citrus which leads to the main note of tea with some fruity element, all on some woody base which will become more prominent towards the dry down. I dont find this fragrance to be too green either. Its really comforting, fresh peaceful and zen, just like the monkey dressing in japanese style robe. Very likeable from the house. Above average performance and well blended just as you would expect from a zoologist fragrance. For me its definitely one of the best from the house of zoologist along with the chameleon. Sad it has been discontinued but really happy that i was able to get the full bottle.

@scain54 "...behind closed doors, though...kinky'...I can't help but wonder what makes it so awesome to make someone feel that way. That comment alone is enough reason to want to try it. I tried samples of all their releases from 2015. I hate so say it but my nose just couldn't handle it. I'll chuck it up to me not being as sophisticated as I thought. Perhaps my nose needs to learn how to appreciate and love these fragrances. I'm fascinated by the note breakdown on Macaque, even if not by the name of the fragrance. Still, scain54 could well have uttered the best line to describe any fragrance and what they do to us, or perhaps what they make us wanna' do. Cheers, world!

A delicious sour green opener, closely followed by woods (especially cedar), honey, black tea and light musk. Although the only animal-related note listed is musk, the combined notes certainly have the effect of something more raw. Macaque becomes more complex with a little time and the initial sourness no longer dominates. I think of this as a more serene, civilized, version of the phenomenal Hyrax. Sexy, but not as dirty! Beautiful at night, but you can wear it in daytime and in the office if you go easy on the sprays. Macque probably won't take over a room...it's more intimate than that. Moderate longevity and sillage. Highly recommended!

Piercingly fresh green. My second fragrance from this house and damn, these guys are heading towards becoming one of my favorites. This is a green fragrance but not in the style of the 70s/ 80s powerhouses but with a translucent, modern take. Which is interesting as sweet fruit is one of the predominant notes. Here it blends harmoniously with the woody, incense-like cedar and cool, green galbanum in an almost dry composition. If it was any less masterfully done, it would be one of those boring, anemic "aquatic" fragrances that are the rage now. Zoologist manages to make it both beautiful and unique. Fresh modern.

I ordered a sample vial of this for my husband and ended up stealing it! My husband immediately said he smelled "wet jungle, or like rolling around in the grass of an arboretum," and I completely agree. It eventually settles into an extremely green scent that is completely wearable. It is easily unisex but both my husband and I agreed it faired better on me than on him. Out of the four samples I ordered from Zoologist, this is the only one that immediately made me want to rush out and buy a full bottle. By the way, if you live in an extremely hot and humid area like I do, this is perfect to wear outdoors.

Macaque to me smells like a sweet and sour apple and jasmine tea, the tea resembles panda, but because it is used to intensify the apple it is a bit sour (fruity sour mind you). Macaque, Panda and Elephant give me the same vibe, green, uplifting, good weather in a tropical forest. Though I'm not sure the association of Macaque and the scent, it's a beautiful and unique scent. Zoologist perfumes on my skin have more or less the same performance, the longevity is great with moderate silage, Macaque is no exception.

From the first spray, even before the fragrance landed on my skin, I thought wow, this is absolutely amazing! Never thought I would love a green fragrance as much as I do with this one. It feels like I'm surrounded by many tea trees on a very hot summer day. This is the fourth Zoologist fragrance I have tried, and it is already at the top with Beaver. Both very fresh, clean and very wearable. This one is a must try.

I'm glad I had the opportunity to try this perfume before it was officially launched. Galbanum is one of my favorites notes, but unfortunately overlooked nowadays. Sarah McCartney intertwines it with a beautiful, translucent oud with a top of fresh and luminous notes and a blanket of cozy woods and musks. Excellent projection. Bravo!

Macaque is a blast of green smelling materials: galbanum, apple, green tea framed with crisp white floral nuance (jasmine and ylang-ylang) on top of dry woods (moss and white oud). As with most Zoologist's experiments it's about the environment of that creature. So think sappy lianas and jungle.

Testing from a dab sample vial...fresh, green, lovely. Shares nothing in common with the women's scents popular in the mall these days. I couldn't label this from any particular era. It smells good in the way that I find most men's scents do...uplifting and clean.

I bought the complete sampler pack. I figured I would start "light" and work my way up to the heavier ones. Despite my attempts to start off gentle, this perfume was surprisingly bold. Not all bold perfumes are laced with oud, vanilla, and leather. With the first spray I get heaps of hay, like a barn yard or that smell when you are at the zoo and you get close to an animals cage. Kind of funky. If you would ave told me there are some aldehydes in this, I would have believed you. The beginning projects very sharp, slightly metallic and dry. Slowly that subdues. Bright due to the green apple that never goes away. I dont see white pepper listed as a note, but I smell something sharp and spicy that develops eventually. As this starts to calm down and enters the long middle, It becomes very woodsy, light blonde woods of I get lots cedar and dusty jasmine tea. A hint of incense(frankincense?).Towards the end, Whisper soft florals, but never flowery. Sometimes I think I smell osmanthus at the end, must be from the jasmine tea. Intense projection and longevity. Overall: Dry, green, apple, tea, woodsy(cedar), hay&straw Reminds me of Bvlgari Au Vert, one of my favorite green and dry fragrances. Also reminds me of Chanel 19, which I do not like at all, but strangely I like Macque. There is no powder and posh to this, which I love. This has more of a jungle yoga retreat type of vibe. A very dry and green fragrance. Refreshing and bright and a bit of funky. It really does remind me of jungle treetops in the morning. I also think of green tea in the cool morning. I totally would wear this; I would like this even better as a home fragrance, as it projects the exact vibe I want in my home. Peaceful, zen, bright, clean, refreshing, and a little exotic.

I have had my sample for over three years now; and I truly disliked it at first. I put it away, along with about 7 other Zoologists samples, wrapped back up in the pack they came in, in a box in my closet- forgotten. Came across them today while searching for something else-opening the pack, I randomly selected one to wear today, just a grab one and deal with whatever it was -and it was “Macaque”, as in general I don’t care for Zoologists line- they are just “unusual” for me. I remember TRex and how revolting it found it to be. Back to Macaque- now I also remember disliking this one, but I thought, what the heck, I’ll wear it today, drain the sample vial and toss it. I sprayed it liberally just to “waste it” and I was pleasantly surprised! I liked it! First,.. a whiff of alcoholic-fleeting - a few seconds at most, then,..a very nice, strong green apple, yeah, strong on my skin , then over 30-40 minutes settling into a slightly sweet, green tea of sorts with just the ever so slightest whiff of something animalic. Yes, definitely animatic. Not revolting or off putting in the least. Macaque developed into a very wearable green, aromatic, clean light apple scent on my skin. I am actually surprised how this evolved hidden away in a forgotten box. I guess that’s the maceration over those years. Anyway,..Probably won’t buy another sample, let alone a full bottle of this guy, but I’ll wear the last 1/3 of the sample and enjoy it. Definitely a daytime scent for Spring and Summer wearing! If you like the fresh apple 🍏 one’s, try it, but maybe let it settle for some time.

Macaque by Zoologist is definitely a much better fragrance than its current rating (3.41/5) would suggest. I would argue that it's one of the more wearable from the collection as there's not too much in it that could offend anyone. The opening is a very strong green apple-citrus mandarin burst that is fantastic (if you like green apples and mandarins). I hate Bat because of the banana so I can understand someone hating this because of the apple. The mandarin disappears quite rapidly (unfortunately, but not surprisingly), with woods taking over for a while after that. I can't smell Macaque on my skin after about 4 hours, which is really disappointing. I sprayed my shirt to see if it would help improve the longevity, but it did not seem to help at all. My girlfriend often comments that I smell nice and "musky" after work, sometimes up to 11-12 hours later. So I'm torn about the longevity issue! It's very fresh and vibrant and almost energising in its crispness. I currently only have a sample but I think I like the initial few hours enough to buy a full bottle one day in the future. For anyone interested, it layers really well with other fragrances (particularly woody based ones), which also seems to help it stick around a bit longer too.

This is a lovely GREEN perfume, somewhat "lily-like" without the sweetness; it provides a definite idea of galbanum. In the dry down, after the initial "crunch" of galbanum and apple, it settles down into more of a fruity light quality, but NOT mall-frag; it's just a light somewhat tropical skin scent (but please do not think coconuts etc.). It nicely blends the green elements with faint whiffs of fruit (ylang-ylang) and green tea as well as jasmine. The jasmine is more similar to jasmine tea, not indolic and heavy. I don't smell much citrus in it, or even much wood, although I get surprise whiffs as the hours pass of different scents than identified above. I think this is a very lovely scent but the silage and longevity are low--more the silage. I like amped up scents, and this settles quickly into a skin scent and becomes amorphous. For the price, I'd pick another perfume. But I love the Zoology brand overall.

This is a joy ride, and I've been wearing it and wearing it and I still feel my words are inadequate, my knowledge of notes lacking. It starts out with a sharp sour apple and what I can only guess is galbanum green. This party quickly settles down into what my inexperienced nose thought was pear or banana or some other soft, lightly scented fruit, but now I'm guessing is jasmine tea mixed with green tea. Frankinsence adds smoke to this, rosewood and cedar keep it grounded, a touch of ylang ylang adds a floral, and drop of honey adds a bit of sweetness. I feel so unworthy and unqualified to write about such a well crafted scent, a scent that shows you so many faces before it settles down to something so beautiful and refined that you will sleep peacefully with your wrist pressed to your nose.

First blast of cool spicy ylang-ylang and sharp sweet pineapple. Very lush tropical fruity and woody, like inhaling a ripe musky unidentifiable yellow fruit deep in the heart of a jungle. After a couple minutes, a deep green woody aromatic starts to warm on my skin. Looking through the notes and I think it's the palisander rosewood, something I have not yet encountered. It's mysterious and sweet, vaguely peppery, absolutely unique. Fascinating! I can also get the bitter moss right at the end of a deep sniff.. really hoping that hated note stays where it is. Unisex but leans feminine and best for cool weather. The sweetness could get cloying after a while. 6+ hours later: Very good performance. The scent stayed strong and linear on that mysterious woody fruity sweet scent.

Ok, so I ordered the whole sample set from Zoologist. I've been loving and appreciating all of them. Even Bat/it's epic! I have struggled with this one and Panda. This is very heavy and sour on me. Green and a bit rotten. Tons of Galbanum and tea. After an hour it becomes managable, but I can not say I enjoyed it. I smell many of the listed notes, but it does not smell inviting or harmonious on me...it's more of a mess. Having said that I have sprayed it on my 8y old son and on him it smells very good. It's much fresher and sweeter. Like an iced green tea poured over some fresh fruits and green leafs.. He liked it. It has a fruity quality on him and it projects much better. Definitely not for me, but for the green scent lovers that want something more eclectic.

PPAN - I ordered samples a couple of weeks ago and was able to get the original Macaque in a test vial - it may not have been available when you looked for being out of stock at the time. I love your description as the opposite of Camel and representing the smell of snow and cold air, that's perfect. It's also the opposite of a heavy fragrance - it's completely ethereal. It's so wispy I thought for a brief moment in the first ten minutes that I'd gone anosmic but seconds later, that test spray on top of my hand was radiating at over a foot. Bright and sharp, but also musky. Strong but delicate, cooling but comforting. A great example of the wizardry this house displays routinely.

After trying some of my other beautiful Zoologist scents on last night, I thought I'd test this one before going to work this morning. Well, this is green and fresh enough for work! I smell something which isn't listed, a light sweet white chocolate note, is that what white oud smells like? This turns green on my skin very quickly after an initial blast of light fruity notes which give way quickly to the galbanum, green tea and cedar moss. It's delightful. I think this could possibly be a love? This will be nice in the heat today.

Macaque opens with a nice tart, fruity burst of apple and mandarin, with a huge punch of green from the galbanum. Be aware that the fruity notes evaporate rather quickly, revealing cedar and more cedar, green tea, the ever-present galbanum now scaled back a bit but still peppery-green, and very light white musk. It reminds me very much of wearing some of my favorite green teas right on the skin. If green tea is a comfort scent for you, you'll love it.

This should have been called “Grasshopper” because it smells just like aromatic wild weeds in the country. The Galbanum is by far the dominating accord for the first few hours. It dries down into a pungent vetiver and sour apple with musk and frankincense. The vetiver-sour apple in the dry down is category intense and it is very similar to Vert de Fleur by Tom Ford.

I like the first phase with the apples but then after an hour the drydown on my skin is more of a faint moss-ish thing... bit like those Wunderbaums (pine tree-shaped airfresheners) that are close to death. sigh. Update: hours later was surprised to smell a delish green banana .wow

The top notes combine for a heavily aquatic opening very close to Acqua di parma Blue Mediterraneo - Mirto di Panarea.

I got a sample set and did a first test of Macaque (OG) today, having already tried Dragonfly, Moth, Bee, and Nightingale. Macaque wasn't quite my type of fragrance. I agree with other reviewers that this has a hay/stable kind of vibe at some point/s during the fragrance development. It's not linear on me at all and I don't get the apple-skin for very long (others mentioned that as well, that it comes on in the early phase, and doesn't last overly long). The sharpness was not something I enjoyed, however I am not done testing this and may find that I like it later in different weather and different temperature/humidity. Out of the ones I've tried, my current line up, favorite to least: Bee > Nightingale > Dragonfly > Moth > Macaque

Opens warm, muted, musky, fruity, nutty. Sweetness is momentary then more muted and quite a lot of banana with dusty earth in the middle of it. Final dry down is quiet, fruity, mossy tea. It's quite inoffensive and wearable, somewhat interesting. My DH enjoys it and gives it 7/10... I gave it 6/10 on me but I'm not a banana fan.

my main problem with zoologist is how faint and timid their scents feel—even t. rex doesn't say anything too loud, to my nose. macaque is a pleasant apple scent with some earthiness and animalic notes if you forage beneath that, but i don't find anything too interesting here.

So I got five samples from zoologist (one was sent as and extra- I only ordered four) and unfortunately, Macaque is my least favorite. My favorite is Civet, (ironically the one that was sent as an extra), then there's Bat, Hummingbird, and Elephant. (I will review all of these in case you are interested). Macaque seems the most "normal" if you will, and I don't want to use the word "cheap" as I know this is a great fragrance made by talented people, I just think it seems the most linear- like a fresh green cologne all the way through. The more I smell it, the more I like it, and I would wear it if I had a bottle, I just don't think I like it as much as I like the other ones I've tried from the line. I wouldn't pay $145 for it, but I won't judge people who do, as it is pleasant and of course, scent is always very subjective. I definitely get green apple, and not an overly sweet one either- it's very clean and fresh rather than heavy and syrupy. However, the strongest note is definitely galbanum. I didn't actually smell galbanum before smelling it in this perfume, but the main note of Macaque is exactly how galbanum is described: Fresh, green, sharp, and a little bitter. While I would enjoy wearing this scent from time to time, I'm not willing to pay $40 for 10ml. It's just non-essential to my personal collection, which I try to reserve for favorites. So I guess the lesson is, try a sample. If you love green scents, fresh scents, or galbanum, then it's certainly worth a shot. I know that many people love this perfume. While it's not for me, I do enjoy it and respect the people who made it. Peace

This was a completely new fragrance experience for me when I first tried it and should be praised for capturing some of the jungle and fruity essences which perfectly evoke the Macaque. I wasn't at all surprised when I saw who the perfumer was because Sarah has a habit of making these concept heavy fragrances with her own brand. I was a little cynical at first thinking they were novel for the sake of it, but you have to embrace someone who is willing to move things forward and not just produce another chypre, oriental etc... (not that there's anything wrong with that either) challenging our noses with strange combinations and progressive fragrances. All this being said....I hate Macaque! haha...nah only kidding, but I don't like it particularly, it's just plain odd. Many of the Zoologist line are this way, rendering them unwearable for me. The green top notes and almost transparency of this fragrance are very nice but coupled with a feeling of under-ripe fruits and dry tea and a animal musk doesn't make for a pleasant wearing experience. Alhtough I will wear again to be absolutely sure. I'm glad this exists, that Sarah is putting these Ideas together and that some people are loving & wearing it. Scents like this truly does make me happy, because these are art-house films being showed in high street cinema chains. I say that because Zoologist isn't some underground indy line, it's a mainstream reviewer, hypetrain especially recent releases. I don't know if this is psychosomatic coz of the monkey link but I get a slight banana smell, it's just odd and not for me.

A green bomb. The apple is the sour type, and it just causes to amplify the already wild spread cut green grass theme abandon in Niche and through this scent too. Yes, the many vetiver-greeny lovers will take to it but for me it's boring and too much 'rolling among riverbed weeds' Not sweet at all, no vanilla here or honey etc to round anything off, this is strictly bush-animal territory My rating: 4/10

The opening was exactly what I was looking for -- green, astringent, dry, lots of green tea and galbanum. Like walking in a bamboo grove. With a little bit of floral and wood nuance. On my skin, though, in about fifteen minutes I got a moment of green apple and then it smelled animalic, like a zoo. Maybe that works for some, but smelling like a literal monkey is way outside my comfort zone.

Galbanum bomb on me... One of the most unwearable zoologist to my nose. I usually like green fragrances. For example I love the new "Dodo" and the blackcurrant buds in there. But I think I might be very sensitive to galbanum. For me this smells unpleasant and like nothing I have encountered in nature myself. But if you like galbanum you should definitely check this one out.

Green opening, then out comes the monkey pee. My god, this literally smells like a monkey's cage in the middle of a forest. Okay, you could make that sound cool on paper. You could even make a solid argument that the scent tells a decent story... of a monkey. Although, you can't refuse that in the end, your just reminiscent of an animal in a jungle.

Macaque has that apple green, that powdery, and some herbal smell in it. But the combination turns out to be something quite unusual but not on the pleasant side. I suppose it is still wearable, a bit better than the disaster you would have with Bat or Rhinoceros, but still not what I want to smell on myself or the person next to me.

A very woody green scent. Not really my thing but I don't hate it or anything. I'm just not a fan of green scents in general. Don't work on me. But wanted to try this. If wood and green is your thing I'd check this out. Even I think it's well done altho it's not something I can wear.

Gets stronger the longer you wear it. Dries down to a cliche old perfume I don't like at all. Can't detect any of the apple mentioned here. Sadly, it smells 10x better on sampling paper than on my skin.

I feel like I'm being in a monkey cage of a zoo which is the feed is eaten and scattered. I felt sick and scrubbed it off. This is one of the worst perfumes I've ever sniffed.

This actually reminds me of a horse, instead. Smells like a grassy lawn followed by a hay scent mixed with that kind of fermenting hay smell. Not my favorite.

You are a samurai of an evil feudal lord, the enemy samurais had captured you and dumped you into a pit, then took turns pissing on you from above. Sounds intriguing, just not my pit of tea.

Victor Wong has used a model of art direction to build the Zoologist Perfumes line. As the brand’s owner and artistic director Wong commissions work from independent perfumers and collaborates with them to shape the perfumes. I’m interested in commissioned work because it allows an artist to step outside of herself to try on a new persona/style. The work can shift expectations and find a new audience. Wong has used this approach to create a consistent but broad aesthetic for his brand. The line has expanded to include a number of genres, but the potent eau de parfum concentration of the perfumes, excellent presentation and cheeky anthropomorphic animal themes give the line coherence. Sarah McCartney is the author of the 4160 Tuesdays line of perfumes. She approached approached Wong, upending the pattern of the director pursuing nose, and then set herself a particular challenge by choosing a green perfume as her topic. Macaque is the second green woody perfume in the line after Paul Kiler’s Panda. Third if you count Chris Bartlett’s Beaver, which is a musky green floral. (Fourth if you count the reformulated Beaver.) Cedar and frankincense reinforce galbanum’s balsamic olfactory profile and give Macaque backbone. The core of the perfume holds a coherent shape from start to finish, giving the more volatile aromas a chance to run their course at their own pace. McCartney makes the connection between wood and fruit via sap. Unripe fruit tends to be chalky and starchy, qualities often used to describe galbanum. At the cusp of ripeness, fruit is effectively resinous. McCartney takes advantage of this particular aspect of fruit to generate woody fruit notes. Her approach short-circuits the expected associations of green perfumes with springtime breezes, chirping birds and butterflies. Macaque is painted in broad strokes and generates deliberate juxtapositions. The ‘sap accord’ defines the perfume and gives it a bittersweet balance. McCartney does some of sleight of hand in the drydown, recreating the balance with a different accord. For most of the perfume it is the mash-up of fruit and galbanum that produces bitterseetness but in the basenotes, fruit is replaced by a sweet muskiness. The slight dissonance of sweetness and bitter inkiness extends through the life of the perfume. It’s a clever use of a soft musk, avoiding the bland ‘soft landing’ white musks give to many contemporary perfumes. Galbanum is such a particular and forceful scent that many perfumes that use it become penned in by it. It defined the vivid green perfumes of the 1960s-’70s and has unfortunately acquired a retro vibe. McCartney dives headlong into the material and implicitly begs comparison to some heavy hitters of the past, like Chamade, Chanel 19, Aliage and Safari. It’s a gutsy move and one that pays off by focussing our attention away from the bright floral stylings of these older perfumes and toward a more dusky, vegetal interpretation. (It seems like a special culture of this brand, reformulations are everywhere in Zoologist... this has happened to Dodo and Rhinoceros, as well as Beaver, Panda and Bat earlier, Macaque and Dragonfly are the next two in a row, that would make nearly 1/3 of Zoologist perfumes are reformulated, or the brand said: new design. Unlike to discontinue, keeping the name and outlook of old bottle to call a new design!... though this happens on an independent of the independence, one with great creativity and adorable animal affections, it's still gone too far for me. There are many brands selling commissioned perfumers' work, but turning out to find another one for a new design/formulation sometime later seems like a special case in the perfumery. Sometimes I hear people assume Mr. Wong easily has arguements with cooperated perfumers... for the description above I really have nothing to say.) My logic is simple, I drink tea every day and think it's no need have more of the tea to add my charm. And Green Tea in the cold dark corner is like always full. Futhermore, there are lods of products in the perfumery I have to make choices, I pass by some... for the label, TF; for the time being, Le Labo; all the flankers and reformulations; in connection with a fragrance, Toy Boy; and for the note: tea perfumes. Indeed I have found my tea fragrance, it's Qi, its exquisite is for the appreciation. Macaque is the tea perfume of Zoologist, at least for the time being, in the disguise of galbanum, with woody in the background, from the dress of macaque portrait it's not hard to image this is more or less a zen perfume, to relax and for meditation. Some of Z's animalic things wouldn't appear until the very drydown, especially if you observe on the cloth, but for Macaque it's not the case. The other one wears in Japanese style, the kimono Nightingale is about powdery and flowery. (A few words before the end: some Zoologist would always be my all time favorites, of the formulation in the time being; for the situation of always the reformulations my love would to a certain degree and STOP... it's just gone too far and has irritated my belife in fragrance, deeply. It's about CONSISTENCY.)

THE MEDITATIVE MONKEY [Short Review] The fragrance "Macaque" (Monkey) is a pleasant and unique scent that breaks away from current perfume trends. It has a near bitter dry green and fruity scent that impressed me with its skilled creation done by perfumer Sarah McCartney. The fragrance feels natural and juicy, taking us to a meditative state that differs a lot from popular urban scents. It reminds me of the influences of Shiseido's ZEN. Unlike popular scents like the rose-oud of "Montale" or the patchouli-laced orange blossom of "La Vie Est Belle,", I may stress the inner differences of "Macaque" by comparing a meditative Thai garden to an English apple orchard surrounded by tea roses. This perfume, despite its "monkey" name, appeals to those who appreciate the tranquillity of Asian gardens. It offers a serene and peaceful beauty without relying on vibrant, colourful flowers. The scent is well-balanced, with no single note overpowering the others. It has a calm, dry green essence complemented by delicate resin notes and high-quality tree moss. Musk and white oud add a serious, majestic element to the perfume. The fragrance tells different stories through its components, representing freshness with apple, ethereal incense, and peaceful wood notes with a subtle hint of smoke reminiscent of a grandmother's open fireplace. My Opinion: This scent is interesting and unique, with a faint resemblance to Tom Ford's Vert Boheme due to the strong galbanum note. It's a fresh, slightly bitter green scent suitable for green scent lovers, ideal for hot and humid weather. Why this perfume's rating isn't higher is beyond me. There are so many things I like about this perfume: - The apple note is just authentic. It's the smell of the skin of the apple rather than the synthetic apple juice that often appears in other perfumes that claim to have apple. So this apple is just really pleasant. - The tea notes are, as usual with perfume, a little soapy - but FAR less soapy than many other "tea" fragrances out there. - The galbanum is very sappy. It really evokes a natural greenness without dousing the wearer in grass. The only thing I don't like about this fragrance is that after 15 minutes, it becomes mostly just a tea fragrance. Very nice tea, but all other notes seem to have disappeared. Overall, this appears to be the total opposite of Camel from the same house. If Camel evokes the heat of the desert, this is the snow-covered mountains in early spring where trees are regrowing and buds are budding. It's fresh and zen. This version apparently is already discontinued and replaced with two new versions (Yuzu and Fuji apple) in 2021 - which I haven't tried. But I'm glad I snatched a half-bottle of this old version when it's still not yet extinct like many of the early iterations from this house.

Hmm. I appreciate how Victor is in touch with nature. A very eye catching array of visuals and convincing stories to go along with each release. Macaque brings back the good old earthiness factor to an otherwise overexploited genre of scents which gives it the touch of Chypre. The opening has a tarry greeniness coming from the galbanum which is the deciding factor on this scent. It could go either Wow to Yuck from there. For me it is the best part about it however it's extremely quick to fade. The tarriness or the suede aspect could be contributed by incense. Drydown is mostly dominated by a water soft Jasmine giving the impression of a metallic neroli with some sweetness coming from Mandarin. The Musk and woods are merely shadows. I dont know what the perfumer/fragrantica means by White Oud. It could be cheaper Gaharu Buaya oil ora synthetic metallic soapy Oud namesake. Either of those I could not make out. I really like the fragrance because it's sort of unique and we'll made but it cannot be classified as EDP. I personally love the bitter green opening on myself but it's rather odd for casual noses. Hmm.. No wonder Sarah was the one behind this fragrance as i am sniffing her style all the way through! This is an Angelic tea with doses of apples (mostly clean green fridge apples). Some woods, musk, oakmoss, & cedar. No ylang detected and mostly green apples conquers in the backseat. It's quite freshy, and superbly green with hints of angelic. An interesting fragrance although i feel a slightly heat on the spot that i have applied this scent on (my arm) and i hope i am just imagining and it's not some sensitivity i am getting. Edit (30th Sept 2018) Checking it again today, I believe this is a variation of "Elephant" of the same line with coconut kept minimized, more greeny honey petitgrain and an extra jasmine. Olibanum, rosewood are obviously remarkable. Oakmoss, & ylang are there too but no apples i can detect... not clearly at least. It's another greenish "Elephant". Beautiful but i prefer the other version that Sarah did for them but they rejected. Remains beauty.
