This one opens with an incredibly fizzy citrus accord, blended with a rich neroli note, smelling very bright, almost blindingly so. Eventually it gets very musky and salty. It is reminiscent of Colonia, but even fresher, with less mint, and more of a salty ambergris (which arrives within five minutes, btw). For most of its impressive, three to four hour lifespan, 1853 is a transparent ambergris/sandalwood/musk scent. Oh, and yes, there's also a light styrax note blended in with the ambergris. The sandalwood note is of the Australian variety, and very tame - this isn't a woody scent. The ambergris and musk are the main notes in the drydown, and they sweeten a bit with time. The spicy styrax filters through the musks occasionally. Because of that note, this scent sometimes reminds me of Creed's Cuir de Russie, without the "Cuir" part. There's not nearly as much resin here as in the Creed, but it's nicely rendered. Don't get me wrong, this doesn't announce itself past the initial spray, and remains a rather close skinscent for the duration, but it's a solid cologne that certainly remains detectable for a few hours. If you went wild with the sprays, you might enter the room a few seconds before your body does, because I think you can "stack" this scent, i.e., layer it upon itself, deepening the concentration of ambergris on skin to make it richer and perhaps louder. However, with five or six sprays, this cologne is typical in the sillage department, with above average longevity. Perfect for a hot summer day, and very well made.
