Mugler Cologne

Mugler Cologne (both the original and Come Together) wins hands down as my all-time favorite fragrance. I literally feel joy when I spray it on my skin and clothes, and I have no trouble believing there’s something deeply sensual about it—even though it’s so delicate it could never offend anyone. The opening notes are citrusy and grassy, but soon the soapy musk emerges, along with an evident woody vetiver base—although vetiver is not listed among the notes, it’s absolutely and unmistakably present. The story of this fragrance is described in many other reviews, and it’s truly baffling and incomprehensible that L’Oréal makes it so hard to find, even though it’s still in their catalog. And yes, let’s be honest: this is clearly where Original Vetiver was born. Let’s not kid ourselves—the similarities are obvious, even though Original Vetiver is a much more elegant, refined, and polished scent. Come Together is slightly reformulated, with more simplicity and linearity compared to the 2001 original, leaning more towards the grassy note. It’s less spicy—if that makes sense as a description. But this is a difference only noticeable to someone who, like me, has used liters of this fragrance. Literalmente disfruto cuando lo pulverizo sobre la piel y la ropa, y no me cuesta creer que tenga algo profundamente sensual, aunque sea tan delicado que no podría ofender a nadie. Las notas de salida son cítricas y herbáceas, pero pronto aparece la nota jabonosa del almizcle, junto con un evidente fondo amaderado de vetiver—aunque no figure en la lista de notas, está claramente y absolutamente presente. La historia de este perfume está descrita en muchos otros comentarios, y resulta realmente desconcertante e incomprensible que L’Oréal lo haga tan difícil de encontrar, aunque siga presente en catálogo. Y sí, seamos honestos: de aquí nació claramente Original Vetiver. No nos engañemos—las similitudes son evidentes, aunque Original Vetiver sea un perfume mucho más elegante, refinado y pulido. Come Together está ligeramente reformulado, con más simplicidad y linealidad en comparación con el original de 2001, inclinándose más hacia la nota herbácea. Es menos especiado—si sirve como descripción. Pero esta es una diferencia que solo nota quien, como yo, ha usado litros de este perfume. Godo letteralmente quando lo spruzzo sulla pelle e nei vestiti e non faccio fatica a credere che ci sia qualcosa di molto sessuale in questo profumo, anche se è un profumo talmente delicato che non potrebbe offendere nessuno. Le note di apertura sono citriche ed erbose, ma presto compare la nota saponosa del muschio ed un evidente fondo legnoso di vetiver anche se non dichiarato nelle note, ma evidentemente ed assolutamente presente. La storia del profumo è descritta in molti altri commenti ed è davvero sconcertante ed incomprensibile che l’Oreal lo renda molto difficile da reperire, sebbene sempre presente a catalogo. E poi si, bisogna essere onesti: è davvero ciò da cui è nato Original Vetiver. Non prendiamoci in giro perché le similitudini sono evidenti, sebbene Original Vetiver sia un profumo molto più elegante, raffinato e rifinito. Come Together è leggermente riformulato, con una maggiore semplicità e linearità rispetto all’originale del 2001, virando più verso la nota erbosa. E’ meno piccante, se può rendere come descrizione. Ma si tratta di una differenza che nota solo chi ha usato litri di questo profumo come me.

(Review of a 2001 bottle) Mugler Cologne is a very simple, very pretty, and very good yet very typical modern-take on the cologne. Full stop. I could leave my thoughts there, and simply point you to the pyramid, and anyone well experienced and educated on the citrusy floral cologne varietal would be able to guess what it smells like with stupendous accuracy... aside from one aspect, maybe. Bergamot, neroli, and petitgrain start the perfume. The metallic and blindingly bright knife-edge orange glow of the neroli is lovely, and supported very well by the young-green-woody and citrusy petitgrain. It is worth noting that the shelf life of these materials is not great; they have lost a fair amount of vocal volume and tenacity in my 25 year old bottle, so vintage hunters need to keep this in mind and make sure to find a bottle with sound provenance. What follows after the top is what follows in all of the million-and-one colognes of this type: florals and herbs. The neroli gives way to a creamy, softly, and sweetly juicy orange blossom. Touches of herbs like basil and thyme are barely able to be pulled. But here comes a neat little twist that makes Cologne stand out, and that’s its “S” accord, which should simply be presumed to mean soap, but that wouldn’t market as well as a “mystery material”, would it.... This is not your modern, scratchy, sharp, synthetic and synthetic-smelling, white soap musk, it smells like a real and luxurious musky floral soap made with the good ol’ stuff. The soapiness in Cologne is about the only atypical part of it in that it doesn’t follow the soapy lavender prescription as does nearly all others preceding it, nor did it go the route of crap soap musks like its contemporaries. It is supple, round, plush, just the right touch of gray animalic musky, and simply smells great. It is cleanliness with a lot of class. Cologne holds here with the musks for the rest of its life. Lovely stuff, but far from novel. The only reason I would recommend this to someone is because they love neroli, orange blossom, and the smell of real musks - which I do, and thusly why I own it. It’s a winning formula, so much so that Frederic Malle would 13-14 years later give Dominique Ropion a ton of money to create a far more luxurious version of this exact formula with Cologne Indelebile, of which I own several vintage bottles of that as well because... well... I just love the neroli/orange blossom and musk combo. Mugler Cologne scratches the itch nicely when I don’t want to reach for the ultra-lux, pricey, and/or niche stuff, and therefore form and functionality are both well covered. Solid work that I thoroughly enjoy wearing.

What can I say about this little rascal? For the review, I am using a newer bottle of Mugler Cologne (formerly 'Come Together') from 2026, sold directly from the UK Mugler website together with the classic tall bottle from 2017. Is it still a good scent? Is it the same as the older batches, pre 2018, pre L'Oreal acquisition? As I own both, I feel I can offer my two cents: I'd say it's 90% as good, and almost the same. The DNA between the two is identical, as you'd expect from a reformulation, with some slight differences in their compositions: Mugler Cologne (2018-present) is grass on citrus. The emphasis is placed on the greenery of the fragrance DNA, with the bergamot and neroli being complementary against the petitgrain and musk to create a safe, fresh and well rounded scent. The citrus is still there, it's just playing second fiddle, losing its spark entirely at times to the warmer weather. Mugler Cologne (pre-2018) on the other hand is citrus on grass. It emphasises that sharp, zingy freshness first and foremost, with bergamot and neroli shining through before the petitgrain and musk arrives to create a more layered and energetic persona. It's a subtle difference, but I believe the devil is in the details here. Many people, myself included, consider the classic formulation to be better by a pinch, as I believe the fragrance envisioned by Alberto Morillas relies heavily on those prominent citrus accords to push the envelope and bring his concept to life; using that sharpness and zest to really saturate the greenery and give it some spunk. It's where the magic lies. It's worth noting that the newer versions of Mugler Cologne, known formerly as "Come Together", became part of a wider "Mugler Cologne Range" designed for layering over one another, which meant the sharper edges of the original formulation had to be smoothed over to accommodate. For this reason, the original formulation is bolder and brighter by design, and why I believe people have observed it to project further and last longer. TL;DR - Rest assured this current iteration of Mugler Cologne will be as you remember, as the DNA at its core remains unchanged and is still that wonderfully bright and retro-funky green scent of springtime and grass that you can wear anytime to feel funky-fresh. The newer batches post L'Oreal have a little less sparkle and a little less nuance than the batches of old, likely in favour of accessibility and diversification, but if that means it'll remain on the shelves this time, then that can't be a bad thing. I still love it, and I'd still highly recommend it!

#133 of My Fragrance Journey - Mugler Cologne: The fragrance that smells like skin, not perfume Some fragrances want to take you somewhere else - a beach, a spice market, some dim-lit bar you've never actually been to. Mugler Cologne doesn't bother with any of that. It just puts you back in the room you're already standing in. First spray and it's almost too clean. Bergamot flashes bright for a second, then drops into a soft, quiet neroli - not the glossy, sun-drenched kind you get from something like Neroli Portofino. Gentler than that. It smells soapy, honestly, in the best way. Like a white T-shirt off warm skin straight out of the shower. Cotton drying on a line. It stops being about the perfume pretty fast and starts being about you. Skin, just better. Give it half an hour, and whatever theatre it had to begin with is gone. The neroli folds into orange blossom - soft, close to the skin, doesn't care what gender you are. Clean without trying to prove it. And then the S molecule shows up, tangled into a damp green musk, and it just - melts into your own heat. Stops feeling like something you put on. Starts feeling like a fact about you. That restraint is the whole point, I think. No twists, no dark turn waiting in the base, no gourmand surprise. Just musk, a little green, warm skin. Confidence that doesn't need an audience. Here's the catch, though - this is not a fragrance for people who want to be smelled from across the room. It doesn't project, it whispers. Close to the skin, gone faster than you'd like if you're used to the modern stuff that fills a hallway. It retreats fast. You have to lean in for it, almost. Which is either intimate or frustrating, depending on what mood you're in that day. It's old and new at once - that classic European cologne shape, citrus up top, easy and bright, but with a musk overdose that feels current. Not glamorous. Not a "moment." Just the very specific pleasure of feeling clean and comfortable in your own skin, nothing extra attached to it. In a year where everything's trying to make a statement, this one just... doesn't. A white tee. Light through a window. Clean skin. Sometimes that's the whole thing. Ordered from Amazon Germany what from the photo should have been the original Mugler Cologne and bottle, but instead I received the Mugler Cologne Come Together bottle. Unfortunately I was distracted and noticed this only after removing the celophane, opening the box, and seeing the bottle. Used a couple of sprays on me to test it, and also applied on a kitchen paper towel, and left it on a book that has a plastic cover. This is a test I have done repeatedly on many fragrances to check their longevity (among the longest lasting I've tested so far: Bentley Absolute, and Dior Fahrenheit.) I checked the smell on the paper towel for a few consecutive days. Amazingly, and to my surprise, I could still pick up the Come Together fragrance from the center of that paper towel after the second, third, and even fourth day. The vendor contacted me because of my negative review on them. And even if I had removed the cellophane and used a couple of sprays, they were kind enough to accept the return and offer full refund. Because of this, I removed the negative review. The wrong photo is still there on Amazon.de though, but apparently it's something they have already asked Amazon to fix, and it's on Amazon's hands for quite some time already. In any case, I then tried to order again the original Mugler Cologne from another Amazon market vendor hoping to get luckier, and luckily enough, this time I did the original and taller/slimmer Mugler Cologne bottle. Now I did the same sort of test, couple of sprays on the center of the exact same kind of paper towel, and leaving that paper towel resting on a book that has a plastic cover. After the first day already, I barely can pick up the scent from the center of the napkin. To me (again without comparing side-by-side, just from memory, which can be quite misleading) it seems to me the original is more natural smelling, fresher and lighter. Come Together might be longer lasting, but it seemed to me sharper, possibly less natural, more synthetic smelling. Take these impressions with a huge grain of salt, since I am doing so myself. Would like to compare side-by-side but haven't been able to do that so far. PS. Update couple of days later. Actually I can still pick up the scent of the original Mugler Cologne from center of the napkin. Still seems to me the Come Together was more noticeable after this number of days, but of course atomizer differences might play a role. Again side-by-side comparison would be ideal.
