#91 of My Fragrance Journey - Akro Awake: The bitter luxury I probably shouldn't say this out loud, but I didn't expect to get attached to this one. At first, it felt like a curiosity. Something to test, understand, maybe dismiss. Coffee in fragrance is rarely subtle and even less often convincing - I thought I knew exactly how this would go. Then it hit. Not softly, not abstractly. With that dark, almost oily bitterness of real espresso. No sweetness to ease you in, no polite introduction. Just roasted beans, dense and unapologetic, like the moment right before the first sip when everything sharpens. There's a flicker of lemon - not citrus in the traditional sense, more like acidity cutting through weight - and a cool thread of cardamom that lifts it just enough to stop it collapsing into itself. It's... intimate, in a way I wasn't prepared for. Not warm yet. Not inviting. Just present. And I kept coming back to it. Somewhere in the dry-down, it softens - not into comfort exactly, but into something smoother, more controlled. The bitterness relaxes into a dark, almost vanilla warmth, and the vetiver underneath starts to show its shape. Dry, grounded, quietly masculine without trying to prove anything. It settles close but not too close. You're aware of it. You stay aware of it. But here's the part I hesitate over. On certain days, on certain skin, it crosses a line. The realism gets so literal it starts to feel almost accidental - like coffee spilt on fabric, still warm, still clinging. Not unpleasant, just... exposed. No filter, no distance. And I'm not sure everyone wants to wear something that honest. It doesn't really evolve the way you might expect, either. It moves, yes - but within a tight frame. Less a story unfolding, more a state that deepens. For something positioned as luxury, that restraint could feel limiting depending on what you're after. And yet that's exactly what keeps pulling me back. It doesn't try to seduce. Doesn't soften itself for approval. It just is - bitter, textured, a little obsessive. Like a habit you pretend you control but don't. I thought I'd admire it and move on. Instead, I keep reaching for it in moments I don't fully understand. Vibe: Pre-dawn espresso. Dark roast and vetiver. The kind of quiet that has an edge to it. Performance: Moderate to good. Stays close, stays honest. Fit: For someone who doesn't need their fragrance to be liked - just felt. This scent rocks. It’s modern, youthful, trendy...even though it doesn’t have a clusterfack of notes, it’s quite unique and badass. This is not some snobby bistro nestled in the heart of Manhattan but reminds me of the outdoor cafes sprawled across the streets of San Miguel de Allende. I say outdoor because there is a citrusy spice that keeps this frag lively and plays the yin to the coffee’s yang. It’s a pretty loud start. The name really suits the juice. It’s kind of obnoxious in the opening. There’s also a gritty stank in the first 10 minutes of wear. I think the cardamon is very strong initially - but as it settles, the citrusy ‘blond’ coffee vibe really pulls through. An hour in and it’s less spiky, more smooth. A bit more delectable but not sweet enough to be a gourmand. Vetiver is listed as one of the notes, but I don’t find it to be all that ‘smoky’. I think it just makes the coffee smell more naturalistic. 5+ hours later and it’s still a potent dream. Its character didn’t change but perhaps, blended into one’s own salty skin, it’s become even more sexy. Just because this is coffee and cardamon shot I do not think it’s cold weather exclusive. Imo, this could easily be worn all year. I’m smitten... but even though Awake is unisex it leans masculine on me and I’d rather smell it on someone I’m flirting with. I’m buying my partner a full bottle. I’m very attracted to this fragrance. One of the best coffee scents I’ve ever smelt. 10/10

The scent opens up with heavy roasted coffee beans note and straight away goes into freshly brewed rich cup of coffee, soon after the scent sweetness up and cardamom gives out this smooth nutty crema aroma with also very slight but noticeable lemon note at the very top, as it dries down vetiver comes out and shows its woodsy nuances giving more spice and balances out the sweetness. Interestingly lemon note is more prominent in the warmer weather, while vetiver comes out more when it is cooler. Also the performance is nearly beastly, it lasts and projects a lot, it even projects the next day of clothes. Overall the scent of Awake is fairly simple, but that is the concept of it to deliver rich and realistic coffee aroma in a fragrance and it does it very well. It is beautiful and sublime gourmand experience with very luxurious feel to it, but I think you have to like grourmands and be into that strong coffee note with quite a bit of sweetness. In my opinion this could be one of the best coffee based fragrances out there yet if not the best, only contenders that comes to mind is Intense Café by Montale and Aoud Café by Mancera. Other one to look for from the line is definitely Smoke.

I think my sample is broken; I don't get much of any of the notes listed above. I'm genuinely a little confused by the notes listed and my experience, but I'll still give my opinion. I heard this is supposed to be a very realistic coffee scent, which is true. At the very beginning, I got a nice dark, roasted coffee smell. It smelled amazing, and I wish that scent lasted longer because it disappeared within minutes of me putting it on. For the rest of the time, I smelled a very sweet, lactonic, vanilla, whip cream-toped Frappuccino. I know vanilla isn't listed, but I distinctly smell a vanilla Frappuccino. It smelled like walking into a coffee shop and smelling the freshly baked pastries with a cup of sweet coffee. I didn't pick up much lemon or vetiver in this, and I don't mind that because I like the way it smells on me. It had some great longevity, but I wish the sillage was stronger. I love this fragrance. much sweeter and more gourmand than I expected. It's a 10/10 just such a fun, unique fragrance.

I have recently formulated a love for vanilla-centric fragrances. I'm branching out to try vanilla fragrances with "other" gourmand notes. I love "nutty" accords (hazelnut, almond, chestnut). And I LOVE coffee accords. Akro Awake is a linear, non-lactonic, mellow coffee fragrance with an extra twist because of the CARDAMOM. To me, the cardamom gives the fragrance the identical aroma of freshly made Arabic coffee. IYKYK. I think a wee-bit of lemon lightens up the coffee accord. I smell a bit of grassy vetiver. And to my nose, the vetiver also adds somewhat of a gentle floral fragrance. But, IMHO the cardamom is the true player here that makes Awake a unique and great fragrance. This is a lovely, affordable twist on coffee based fragrances. Love it! EDITED TO ADD: Just received my full 100ml bottle from Spain, mid-April 2025. Many of the niche perfume sites in the States are out-of-stock. LOVE LOVE LOVE this stuff.

This fragrance is true to its name and gives the vibes of having a morning cup of coffee on the farm. This opens with a bold and sweet coffee note, with a hint of citrus. After an hour or two the coffee begins to fade and the cardamom starts to come out—less sweet but adding a warm spice to the coffee. At the halfway point in the wear, the coffee all but fades and the vetiver emerges somewhat intense and pungent, aromatic and earthy. The grassy and herbaceous aspect lasts for the remainder of the wear, lessening a bit in intensity and becoming more powdery and slightly sweeter. The sillage is moderate-strong and the longevity is easily over eight hours. I really enjoy this. I was nervous about the coffee with the lemon and vetiver but the notes have a good balance and provide for an interesting journey on the skin. Plus, I always love a perfume that actually smells like coffee.

You're served a flawless double espresso with a lump of brown sugar & a lemon twist hanging off the side... It smells so good, you dump it over your head. Suddenly everyone wants your phone number. The coffee is rich & the cardamom is keeping it full, but the lemon... Oh, the lemon... It's the brilliant finishing touch that turned this sample into a FB. Amazed lemon doesn't have many more votes... It's there, but do think lemon *twist* - It's pith & peel, zero pulp. This aspect is done so well it makes this a pretty photorealistic gourmand, IMO. On my first wear I even woke up the next day thinking it smelled like I'd finished my espresso & had the lemon peel sitting in the bottom of the cup... Definitely check this one out if you want a high quality coffee scent! Lots of scents talk about coffee... Awake totally nails it. It's only about how you like your coffee from here.

The first seconds are weird. The first thing that comes to my mind is a certain garden weed freshly pulled out of wet soil and crushed. It exudes a scent similar to that plant but I can't bring it to consciousness. I revel in its strangeness despite that. And then, a sudden metamorphosis, rushing to convince me that it's all about coffee! That came as a surprise, a paradigm shift, a trick, a snap of fingers. A velvety and an unmistakable aroma of coffee. Fresh and elegant. And then soon, perhaps too soon coffee makes way for cardamom. It's potent, it's impatient, domineering. And all this happened in less than an hour. After two hours of being on my skin it has mellowed out and I feel a warm vanilla mixed with hints of cardamom. No coffee, though. And you know what? I don't mourn it.

Wonderful sweet coffee opening with cardamon and roasted nuts and a lemon twist—reminding me of a French pastry shop with delectable offerings. The opening is so good it makes me consider a purchase when the last thing I need is more perfume I won’t consume in this lifetime. Drydown is less interesting, with all the opening notes softening and more vetiver and wood notes coming through. Still there’s some good performance here with at least two very different stages. I would not pass up a good deal on a bottle, and so far this is my favorite from the Akro Discovery Kit. I’m also wishing Akro would release this in a smaller 30ml size. Edit: third times a charm, best coffee scent on the market. Love it, the best coffee scent I’ve ever experienced in perfume. Woozer.

This is honestly my favorite fragrance right now. Rich, delicate, soft, comforting coffee surrounds you wherever you go. For me, this shines in the air mostly. The opening is so beautifully crafted that it makes me crave the coffee whenever I smell it. It is without a doubt one of the highest quality coffee fragrances that I have put my nose on, as most others that I have smelled come across very screechy and synthetic. This doesn't to me though. It is slightly dry, definitely spicy, and definitely thick. Literally everyone who I have had smell it loves it, even had people walking by be like "it smells like coffee." Wear this when it is slightly cold out and get your body temperature slightly up, and it's an absolute monster.

Out of all the realistic coffee scents I have come across this one is definitely my favourite and to me smells the most like coffee while still being wearable. It’s like a thick cold-brew with a shot of syrupy vanilla sweetener. Very rich but not cloying. Beats out Amore Cafe, Intense cafe and Vietnamese Coffee to my nose, but this is subjective of course because to some reviewers Awake doesn’t really smell like coffee or the cardamom puts them off. There is a woody richness that just works and almost reminds me of elements of an oud accord in the dry down. Wish it projected a bit longer because I enjoy it, but aside from that it’s a smash. I don’t usually wear coffee scents often but I am considering a bottle.

This is so far the only coffee fragrance that for me accomplishes two things at the same time: 1: actually smelling like coffee, as opposed to all the crap people who don't really like coffee add to make it taste like a dessert (cream, sugar, chocolate, vanilla, rose,etc). 2: doesn't smell like cheap, burned coffee Minimal sweetness and spice takes it a touch away from pure coffee, maybe like freshly ground hazelnut flavored coffee (as it is fairly powdery in character). The dry down is fairly linear, with the coffee note receding a bit and getting more nutty and adding sweetness (caramel). Excellent, and surprisingly wearable. You might get asked if you work as a barista though.

Don't judge this one on card, and if you put it on skin, don't judge it by the first few minutes. This is a spectacular coffee scent which actually smells very complex. There's woody, chocolatey and fresh elements swirling around, rather like when you smell quality ground coffee. Two main things set this way ahead of any other coffee perfume I've experienced. Firstly it's not sweet. Secondly it smells realistically like coffee. No other perfume has managed to do this without some added syrupy sweetness of without falling apart into something off putting (like Épices Exquises, which takes a disastrous turn into sour pickley patchouli after 30 minutes on my skin).

so far, this is the least sweet coffee scent i’ve tried! most of the other ones include some gourmand elements like vanilla, brown sugar, maple syrup, etc. but this one is straight up coffee & cardamom with a hint of brightness that i’m attributing to the lemon. i just layered some of my sample on my wrist on top of being frenshe cashmere vanilla perfume oil ($15 at target if you’re in the US) and it’s sooo cozy and delicious. i love that i can add sweetness in but still have a more “plain” coffee scent if i want to wear it that way. i don’t see myself going through a full bottle of Awake but a decant would be a nice addition to my collection.

Unsweetened hit of (the idea of) 'the essence of espresso'. Realistic enough in terms of wearable perfumery. (As someone who has invested a large sum of money on a heavily converted Gaggia Classic machine, burr grinder, etc., someone who loves their coffee... This note actually REALLY pleases me! ) After a couple of hours the projection calms down to a close bubble, but the addition of Cardamom adds a soft, aromatic spiciness, and there's an underlying nutinness and earthiness, probably from the vetiver. From the beginning I also detect a hint of very dark chocolate. Really enjoy Awake. Average performer but lingers on clothes quite well.

I think this is the most realistic coffee scent I have ever smelled, maybe there are many more out there but from what I have tried so far this felt too real, and in spite of smelling like strong coffee it has this wonderful comforting vibe to it .... this eventually turns very spicy and citrusy and I really loved it, I also think this would be a nice scent to wear to the gym because it smells like protein powders, men’s deodorant and air freshener all mixed together (in a fun and interesting way lol) ... maybe I wouldn’t buy one for myself but I would definitely love to smell this on someone else. - Bhavna Darira Chesan

I definitely misjudged this fragrance on my first impression. For some reason I was getting the drydown of another Cresp's fragrance: Club Night from Mercedes Benz. The Awake concept initially appeared simplistic to me, being the coffee note so realistic and prominent. Now I feel the most divine aroma that I can't stop craving. This coffee smells sweet and roasted. So comforting and delicious. I had not noticed before, but now I can tell performance is notable, being able to smell it on clothes the following day after application. One of my favorite fragrances and a testament of the unreliability of first impressions.

PHOTOREALISTIC UNSWEETENED COFFEE. OMG!!! THIS!!! This is your dream coffee scent. Ive read some reviews that said it smells straight up coffee and i expected bitter coffee, but what they meant was that it was an ACTUAL cup of coffee. This doesn't have stupid rose or floral notes or lemon or wood or whatever like any other fragrances bc no i don't have rose in my coffee? who the hell come up with that idea? This smells like your actual coffee. Every notes in this perfume BELONG in coffee. I would like to stop my coffee journey here because ive found THE ONE. thank you.

as someone who was a barista for over 10 years, but doesn't like gourmands, THIS is it. there's a punchy opening with the cardamom - cardamom has this citrusy, peppery, floral thing that i think preps you for the next phase: a rich, oily, bag of roasted coffee beans. the drydown is this bright yet earthy gourmand situation. smells like a good yirgacheffe light roast tastes. i don't know if that helps, but two of my favorite ways to take coffee are: cortado with cardamom syrup or iced espresso over a few ounces of lemonade. this scent means so much to me.

I'm a sucker for coffee scents. This is the actual pure coffee (I had and loved Mugler's Pure Coffee). There's not much more to it. It starts like a simple black coffee, and then it becomes much sweeter. That's it. Not very long lasting either. It should be a good fragrance for layering, cause it has no layers of its own. But I'm a sucker for coffee scent, so obviously I had to have it. Right there. I couldn't walk out the shop without it. Do I regret it though - Yes. Is it worth its price - No. But I'm a sucker for coffee scents.

This gorgeous perfume really deserves complimentes. Starts caramel and creamy, it is fluffy and delicately sweet. Nonetheless, it is COFFEE - not some syntetic, overcharging aroma. What I smell, is very photorealistic and tasteful. Lemon note is nice aspect - reminds acidity of arabica, but adds bright, sunny associations. Cardamom is gentle, spicy kiss on skin - smells cozy, gourmand. Olivier Cresp's signature is obvious - this perfectly balanced, a perfume of a master. --- Moderate projection, longevity 5-6 hours.

I truly love this. It's gourmand but not so much that it makes me sick, as I think the spice from the cardamon shines and cuts through so beautifully. To me, this is a warm, sweet and spiced dark coffee. It smells like how your clothes might smell after spending an hour or two at a cafe. Really cozy, a favorite right from the get go. If you want it a little sweeter, it layers beautifully with other lactonic or vanilla fragrance. (I personally love it with Lattafa Nebras)

as soon as i smelt my sample i knew i was buying a full bottle... rich, dark, and deep while still maintaining its warm, slightly spicy, pleasantly astringent quality. it's the perfect balance of smooth, sharp, sweet, and light. isn't a cardamom overdose which is what i was afraid of, although it does pop out more as it dries. this scent isn't playing any games, it's simply a cup of brewed espresso that's pressed from fresh coffee beans. cozy and comforting. i love

mmm... i've been looking for a coffee perfume that smells how my latte order smells for a long time (and doesn't devolve into a sticky, icky, sweaty scent on my skin). i think this is it!!! i just wish the raw coffee note held for longer and was more pronounced, but this is creamy and lactonic and only so slightly bitter. i hardly got the lemon/citrus note which originally made me raise an eyebrow but i think it melds together so well. really realistic!

I expected to just like this fragrance but damn. This is stunning. I got blasted with this super realistic roast black coffee, which later dried down into more of that same cup of coffee, with a dash of creamer. Not too much to where it’s just a sugary mess, but to wear your can still taste the richness of the coffee. I didn’t really get too much lemon, but I got this almost smoky quality from the cardamom and vetiver mixed together. Amazing stuff.

I know a perfume is good when there are people in their reviews saying that it smells like chocolate and candy while others are saying that it smells like straight up black coffee lol. our noses are fascinating! to me this is straight up beautifully balanced coffee and some sweetened condensed milk to sweeten. not overpowering or disgustingly sweet, nor does it smell like sticking your nose directly over a fresh pot of coffee. lovely stuff!

Literally the smell of a freshly brewed cup of coffee, very realistic. Its smooth, not overly bitter, and it has this cozy vibe that makes you feel like you’re snuggled up with a warm cup on a chilly morning. It’s not too overpowering, sits pretty close to the skin, and it lasts a decent amount of time. If you’re a coffee lover like me, you should definitely try it, it’s both comforting and energizing scent at the same time. ☕️🤎

As a coffee lover this is PERFECT. I bought a few coffee perfume samples and this beats the others by miles in terms of delicious, photorealistic coffee. The cardamom gives the perfect green and fresh edge which gives me the reason why its called "Awake". Its slightly sweet, fresh, peppery but smooth coffee. The balance between bitterness and sweetness in coffee is like perfect. This is the perfume I have been searching for.

Mmmmmmmmmm if you like coffee scents, this is the one. It leans a little one dimensional at times cause of the strength of the coffee, but it's a smooth and delightful scent, not acrid or overpowering at all. The cardamom is a delightful addition that adds a nice wholeness to the scent. It's very difficult to catch the other, brighter, notes on my skin, but I can't complain, because the coffee is so delightfully done. 8/10

One of my favorites from the discovery set- definitely my favorite coffee scent. Coffee note is photorealistic, balanced out beautifully with the cardamom and citrus. Gorgeous and gourmand without being sweet. If you're looking for a sugary, syrupy latte scent, this is not it. Unlike any other coffee scent I've tried.This will be a full-bottle upgrade for me (and probably a gift for my fellow coffee-addict sister :))

This perfume is a complex coffee gobstopper that changes throughout the day as each layer shifts into another note. Initially, it had a strong caramel coffee note that weakened as the day went on. A few hours later, it dried down citrus and honey suckle. It reminds me of the coffee smell that lingered on my skin after working a shift as barista mixed with the scent of my shampoo.

i was searching for a unisex coffee perfume for so long and i think this one is the best I've tried yet. i literally can't stop sniffing myself when i wear it. this perfume is rather warm than sweet. i usually hate citrusy notes on myself, though here the barely noticeable lemon just makes it click. just wow... can't wait to wear it this fall 🍂

Stunning spicy coffee scent. Lasts ages on me and my clothes well into the next day. Didn't get much of the lemon but loved the experience anyway. Definitely not a super-realistic coffee scent, but does its own thing in a warm, wintery way. Definitely quite a strong and upfront fragrance, so maybe hesitate on a blind buy.

This is probably the best coffee scent you could get. Smells like coffee with a touch of lemon in the opening but once it settles down on the skin all you get is coffee beans and it lasts all day. Perfect for fall and winter. I wear this fragrance often to relax sometimes, puts me in a chill mood. Perfectly unisex.

This. Scent. Is. Perfection. On my skin, it ends up smelling like a coffee made with brown sugar. Warm, caramelised, with some spice with the cardamom. Excellent sillage on my skin and is a definite mood booster. Also not too heavy to be worn throughout the day but also makes for an excellent evening scent.

Black coffee, leather, parchment, earthy - not nearly as sweet as I expected and I don't get much vanilla. A 5/5 for me as a sexy evening/date scent that I like to layer over a sweeter body spray (like rich espresso by bbw). 100% going to purchase a full bottle in the future!

probably the sweetest perfume EVER!! smells like the sweetest coffee ever SUPER long lasting and the only thing that i would say is a con is that its quite potent so it can get a little much sometimes ;( but my dad uses this perfume so good memories and its lovely

I really like this one! It's the most realistic coffee scent I've ever smelled, a fresh yet bitter, rich coffee with a hint of lemon. The cardamon adds to the depth. Unfortunately it doesn't last as long as I'd like, but I'll definitely enjoy using up my sample.

Coffee with a punch. This is strong and smells great. The price for all these fragrances are a little too high. 190$ is crazy ecspeailly when they used to be like 160$ a year or two ago. But still a good fragrance nonetheless.

The simplicity of this has worked its way into my heart. I really love it, to be honest. I don't usually go for coffee fragrances, but this one, I just do. It's chocolatey, which probably has something to do with it.

Opens up very lemony w spices . It the settles w a dark roast coffee and something sweet. I imagine having espresso with a lemon tart. It’s one of the best coffee fragrances ever. now I need a full bottle.

photorealistic smell of how an simple american coffee smells like: earthy, bitter, citrusy and aromatic. spraying on the underchest, under your shirt, it will give you energy everytime you sniff it

this is going to be an incredibly niche review, but this smells exactly like Aquolina's Chocolovers (positive). I just went down a Google black hole to find what it reminded me of, and there it is.

It smells like realistic black coffee with a hint of cardamom, not at all sweet on me. I use it alone when I need to stay sharp, or together with some sweet caramel gourmand to soften it up.

I went on to search for the best coffee scent out there, and this one is a clear winner. Quite linear, realistic coffee. A close runner-up for me is Durocaffe by Bois 1920.

This is an excellent coffee fragrance. There is just enough spice to make it interesting and just enough sweetness to take off the burnt edges. I find it easily wearable.

This is sooo good, realistic, non-syntetic coffee. Seems like It has a little sugar, but very, very minimal, just the right amount so It won't be too harsh bitter.

A must for any coffee lover! Finally a photorealistic coffee fragrance, absolutely love this! Nice beautiful espresso with a hint of sugar. Gorgeous scent <3
