Albert Nipon

I find this too be quite an animalic oriental. I do pick up hints of cinnabar, opium and some utlra skanky jasmine/musk. It's slightly boozey; It's almost like a cognac or campari and coke. It reminds me of Paris in the fall for some reason. It's very 80's; a very heady juice like the comtemporaries of its time. It eventually mellows out into a mossy, woody, musky skinscent; blending well with ones own personal secretions magnifiques. I think it's sexy and daring and not for the faint at heart. This one will turn heads and some noses for better or worse. The oak moss is detectable too. So it has a chypre feel no doubt. I wear this around the house and sometimes when I'm feeling loud and dramtatic, to the clubs. For an intense night of debauchery I layer this with an Rasasi's Amber Oud or an amber oil by Nemat(Liquid Amber or Musk Amber.) At home, when I'm feeling in need of comfort and pampering(to read a book in a most lux manner or to nuzzle up with a special someone in bed; and not just on my pulse points...) I layer this with an edp of choice(DK Gold or Pacificas Spanish Amber) it tends to make the floral accord, in this case the jasmine, creamy, soft and like cashmere. Layering also brings out this lucious saffron accord in Nipon, which I love, love love. *This review is for both the Vintage Parfum and the Vintage Eau de Toilette. The parfum really is just a more intense concentration of the edt. There's not a real difference between them other than what I mentioned.

Dark brown juices nearly always offer an instantaneous love for me, and AN Albert Nipon is no exception. Lovers of Youth Dew, Ultima, Mink & Pearls, and Herbessence should easily enjoy this skankfest, with the wonderfully anachronistic, demure bow. If this is your first foray into the vintage chyprientals, be warned: you must adore balsamic resins, large doses of savory and warm spices, big whiffs of animal musks, and bitter, bitter oakmoss. Expect something incredibly rich, but not at all sweet. I think this is seasonless and can be worn day or night, but if I wear this at night, I'm gonna choke those around me by spraying to my heart's content. Do I need this, AND Youth Dew in my collection? Absolutely not. Do I REQUIRE more bottles, now that I've had a taste via the dredges of a dusty, lidless, timeworn bargain obtained on Ebay? Yes. I think I've even seen this in a drugstore near me, I'm going to have to go buy up everything they have left, if some other smart local person with excellent taste hasn't beaten me to it!

The Short: I ♥ Albert Nipon. This is sultry sweet. The Long: I love this deep rich liquor base. Gorgeous. Dark wood, spice rich, floral, and oak moss dry. A touch of Rose and Carnation to lighten it. The citrus top is short but, my bottle is also vintage-1980s so, I am pleased it still has the top note. This is a treasure. The dry down on this is intoxicating. It ends up close to the skin, powdery, and softly sweet. Lasts 12+ hours. I especially love it in winter and fall under my coat. The warmth blooms this fragrance and I can smell it and enjoy it. This is pre-2000s perfumery; a spicy floral woody potion. Beautifully blended and a quality product. Note: [If you don't like this type of scent in general, do not buy this.] Some examples are Youth Dew, Cinnabar, Ciara, Anne Klein II, Tabu. This is not the same scent but, it would be easily sorted onto the same shelf.

This is gorgeous. I have a small vintage (1980's) bottle of the parfum. Always one of my favourites. Quite a bit more subtle and softer than Opium and Cinnabar, both popular at the time, it's cozy, warm and comforting. Delicious drydown. I only wear it in winter and fall, so in love with this. Not for lovers of fruity, syrupy numbers, that's for sure ;)

@ Phantomias ... I don't get that "medicinal" note at all. Everything about this is delicious, just not as outspoken or powerful as Opium and Cinnabar. I do find Cinnabar a tiny bit sweeter than Opium though. But Nipon is a treasure. I just bought 1/4 oz. of perfume on eBay, never opened.

Reminiscent of old world luxury and elegant manners, velvet and silk, whispered love. Spicy floral with a touch of oakmoss; very feminine. Experienced a compulsive need to revisit the vintage formulation. Not disappointed

Wow! A kind ebay seller sent me some vintage samples with the purchase of a vintage bottle. They are all fresh-smelling, and Albert Nipon is one I hadn't experienced till now. It goes without saying that it is...vintage. Sometimes, I do have to use a different set of criteria for evaluating vintage fragrances because even my aging schnozzel has become accustomed to current scents. Albert Nipon is all about oak moss on my skin. I can imagine scaring off little twenty-something boys by the dozens wearing this ancient beast out and about. But I'm more of a curmudgeon, albeit a glamorous one, than a cougar, so that's alright. I weirdly love this.

A blind buy based on positive reviews as well as the comparisons with some personal favorite frags. Yes, this is similar to my beloved Youth Dew and Cinnabar, but Nipon isn't nearly as rich nor does it have the lasting power and sillage of the two big spicies. There's a medicinal quality that never quite wears off. It's a nice fragrance, and I particularly like the fleeting incense note shortly after application. Nipon is very wearable and not at all dated. It's a mature and classic scent, a bit unisex, too. It deserves to be better known - and worn.

This lovely little number with its burnt sienna juice is a more reserved version of classic, woody, spicy ambers like Youth Dew, Cinnabar and Opium. There are moments reminiscent of Germaine Monteil Royal Secret as well. It sits a bit closer to the skin than any of the aforementioned, and would seem somewhat redundant at this point for me. However, if I saw a bottle sitting around with a cheap price tag, waiting for a new home, I wouldn't mind adopting it.

Very loud indeed! This reminds me of an old UN-REFORMULATED Dior creation. Somewhere in between Poison & Addict. Lovers of heavy hitting, dramatic orientals will probably love this. Big, white florals, huge spice, sweet, & woody. There really is an animalic vibe here, and I believe I'm testing the vintage. The juice is DARK! I'm getting a sweet fruityness that isn't mentioned in the notes. Interesting. Merits a retest.

I have vintage and think the top notes have gone off but the heart is lovely. This is a vintage floriental that leans more toward aldehyde than chypre. I am not a chypre lover.The oakmoss and wood rises in the drydown but not that bitter note. Mainly this is spicy flowers but not in the vein of Ciara, Rumba, Opium, etc. A floriental chypre. Nice. It's a like but not a love for me.

this opens as a spicy woody oakmoss. very vintage. definitely reminiscent of youth dew, but if memory serves this may be a bit softer/have more oakmoss (?) after a few minutes, i get a somewhat sour rose note and then it gets more and more sour over time. maybe it just turned because it's old.

Below is a list of ingredients for this lush vintage fragrance that was published in an article on Cleopatra's Budoir blog aldehydes, bergamot, lemon, rose, jasmine, lavender, galbanum, orange flower and carnation geranium, patchouli, cloves, incense, vetiver, labdanum, opoponax, myrrh,tolu balsam,oak moss, pepper, amber and musk. Yourfoxiness and Blu Garcon are right on in their descriptions of this powerful and compelling scent. I have bottles of both the parfum and the EDT. They are equally as dark rich and potent. Don't be afraid of this marvelous brew,just go very lightly with it. This fragrance does seem like it could have been made even as far back as the 40's. I used a full bottle of it back in the 80's,but back then it didn't really stand out among the other behemoths of the era. Now smelling it I get an entirely different feel for it. The myrrh,balsam and amber in this really make it quite velvety. I wouldn't begin to try to classify this fragrance except to say that it is very beautiful if not overdone. I have no experience with the newer versions of the scent. There is quite a lot of the vintage available in Flea markets and on Ebay. They all seem to have held up well. Don't be afraid of the dark color, it was always that way. The older bottles all have crystal bows built into the bottle or glass or plastic bows on the cap. The sillage is enormous unless under applied and the longevity can go 24 hours. The vintage prices are very reasonable for a bottle that should last quite some time! This is definitely a cool weather scent,perfect for the upcoming holiday social events.

ERMMMAUGHERDDDDD- where have I been? I remember this crossing my path years ago, but bottles are few and far between. I highly rec a seller on ebay doing three 1oz bottles for a decent BIN price. It's not the darkest juice, but what I get out of those bottles is my only experience with Albert Nipon. AND I LOVE THIS. G-damn. It's like Habanita or Youth Dew for the 80s. This is not innocent. Why the bow?! Haha. While moms had Opium and Youth Dew- teens got this spicy lil treasure that starts out like boooooozy raisins and then powdery sweetness under the spices and mosses/woods. OMG, give me all of this. Anais Anais perfectly captures the innocent 80s for me (which lets be real, by the time vintage AA dries down, babygirl is out past curfew with messy hair) so this is more like a John Waters bad girl. It feels out of date even for the 80s and the bow, but holy hell- I love this spicy sweet woody burn. I also got a medicinal/clove open quickly, and something skanky goes in and out of this. Sublime. Not as dated and strong as the other heavies this is compared to.

Somebody add that cute little civet face to the note pyramid, ...it's definitely in there. Sampling now from a vintage bottle of Albert Nipon turned dark as root beer. This is indeed a deep dive into animalic oriental-chypre darkness. Amazing to sample, ...perhaps slightly mad to wear. However, the civet is dosed to be most prominent in the opening (it is possible), thereby leaving the deeper drydown still mostly green-dry moss and wood. Combining aspects of classical chypre and 70s-80s style oriental sounds like an obvious idea, ...after all, it is basically just lots of spices + lots of oakmoss. Yet it seems to rarely have been done in such a full-on 50/50 way as this. There may be other similar examples, but if so, they are now obscure as this, or more so. This, being the only fragrance of a designer of matronly fashion, who rose to some prominence in the 1970s and 80s, ...before tax evasion and bankruptcy brought him down. Regardless of that, this scent makes for a fitting testament.

I have a vintage EDT of this (round bottle, etched glass bow, dark brown juice) and LOVE IT! Soicy like Opium or Cinnabar, but much softer and less “funky.” Has a silky, powdery drydown very reminiscent of Royal Secret or Habanita. I was a kid when this came out in the early ‘80s and tended to prefer stuff like Loves Baby Soft, but my mom wore Albert Nipon a lot and I associated it with her hugs and her glamour. One of those rare perfumes that is lingering and strong, but lovely throughout its development. Classy and classic Out of place in the modern fragrance landscape, and probably could never be recreated given restrictions on ingredients. But let’s be honest, the “old lady” label is both unsophisticated and unfair. anyone who applies Tom Ford or Thierry Mugler or Amouage ANYTHING to their body on the regular is already used to strong polarizing perfumes, and that person would probably really enjoy Albert Nipon and even find it rather soft and subtle!

I just received a dark brown splash EDT, and I'm flustered. This dark juice is EXACTLY like Youth Dew. Exactly. Now... my only experience with AP is a fresher/more orange/tan EDT (still vintage tho, this has been OOP for years) so how close is dark brown AP EDT to YDew? Because I'm thinking someone once refilled this empty AP bottle with YD. It's so exact. With the fresher EDT I get the orange/citrus/clove top notes for a good while! Then it's all carnation and rose for a couple hours. I guess I'll look out for a dark brown version in a spray that can't be refilled? Otherwise, aged AP is really just like Youth Dew? On the bright side, orange EDTs are still to be found (got my backups!) and it's a delightful treasure!

Bright, lemony, citrus, riding a wave of fatty/waxy, snuffed candle, lipsticky, facepowder-y, cosmetics-smelling aldehydes. During drydown, it gets spicy and powdery, much in the way of Habanita parfum, but perhaps not as sweet. There's an airy soapiness underpinning it all, however it threatens to verge over into the spicy, resinous, powdery old school barbershop cologne territory. Dries to a masculine spicy , incense, skin scent. It's more, or less, similar to Bal a Versailles, Tabu, Anne Klein 2, Youth Dew, JHL, Jovan Must oil, Alyssa Ashley musk L'outremer Opopanax, Habanita, Lagerfeld (for men), etc.

Kiristarr, I want to meet you somewhere and "do" lunch and some shopping; both of us wearing something comfortable and fabulous, with you wearing AN, and I'll wear my vintage Youth Dew or Knowing! "More curmudgeon than cougar" . . . I love it! We'll either send them fleeing, or have them following us like puppies. "Coo coo a choo, Mrs. Robinson/Jesus loves you more than you will know/whoa whoa whoa whoa." ;-)

Absolutely wonderful, womanly vintage. Starts strong and dries down a few hours later to a comforting powder. To my nose, less spicy than Youth Dew but every bit as dark. Emits like vibes to OCCUR also, that gem among vintage Avons. In short, hard to dislike if you enjoy any of the beauties to which it is compared!

Definitetly has a vintage vibe. It is a deep green earthy smell with spices in the background. The drydown is really wonderful powdery and it lasts all day long.

I have a vintage sample vial. Strong baby powder and not much else.
