Black Tie Affair

Class in a bottle! I have never smelled YSL Tuxedo, but I do know that this one smells very good. Fragrant patchouli, sweet ambergris, luxurious vanilla, and some peppery spice. This fragrance wears like a tuxedo, literally. It's more for formal type events, but I wear it casually as well. I just love the smell. Longevity is around 9 hours or so. P.S. Fabulous scent! I have not tried Tuxedo, so I can't really comment on its similarities, but this does in some ways remind me of the gourmandish backbone of Mercedes Benz Club Black and Club Extreme. Instead, this goes in more of a rounded woody/floral direction, the likes of which would match up to a somewhat more fancy attire/occasion - if that makes sense. Between this, Egyptian Angel and Wasted Moment, I'm fast becoming a big fan of Alexandria Fragrances.

I LOVE this fragrance from Alexandria! It is their take on YSL Tuxedo and they have nailed this one. It’s a nice, warm and spicy vanilla and patchouli fragrance. This is a very classy scent that I save this one for date nights or other formal occasions.

Never smelled Tuxedo but this fragrance is very pleasant, very green smelling to me with a bunch of depth. This is easily one of my favorite fragrances in a collection of around 100 fragrances. Highly recommend.

This is a great scent. It's spicy, clean, classy and sweet. Perfect for a dress up occasion.

I've never smelled Tuxedo but I did wear this and got about 2 compliments. Im not getting the harsh opening that others are getting, the decant i have is from about 3 years ago so im unsure if either it has mascerated or if there has been a reformulation. Black Tie Affair has above average projection and lasts ridiculously long on skin and it literally lasts for months on clothes! I do get the smooth sweet vanilla and the nice patchouli...maybe even a bit of the rose as well. All in all though it is a bit linear a very good scent for the price point. Scent: 8/10 Versatility: 5/10 (this to me is a dressier scent, not a casual white tee, blue jeans fragrance). Longevity 10/10 (I wore this to a black tie event in Sept 2022 with a bow tie, I have an event this weekend and pulled out the bow tie and still smell the fragrance exceptionally well on the bowtie, it's now on my skin!) Projection 7/10 Sillage: 7/10 Seasons: Fall, Winter, Spring. Amazing value for the price!

The reviews below are spot on. The opening is a bit harsh and chemical, and the mid has some of the same properties, but more subdued. Once you get to the drydown though you can see the strong similarities to Tuxedo, but you do have to wait for some time to get there. But even then, if you smell it up close to the skin, your nose does wrinkle a bit as there's a slight chemical nature to it, but at that point you have to be looking for it. There is a noteworthy price difference, but for me it's worth the extra to stick with Tuxedo. I plan on using a fragrance like this for more formal, evening attire situations. I want it to be classy and smooth from start to finish, and Tuxedo does just that. Black Tie Affair is a great alternative though, especially since Tuxedo can be hard to find right now, but just give yourself a good 30-60 minutes after spraying it to work its magic.

Got this in the sampler set in my search for a cool weather, night fragrance. The opening will probably be a turn off for others, definitely is for me off of first impressions. I'm not a fragrance expert but SweetPeaPea identified it as dank patchouli. It was almost an instant pass for me, but the dry down carries this fragrance. I see a sophisticated, mature and confident man wearing this at a formal occasion. This seems more suited for colder weather, at night. I probably can't pull this off, but I can't deny the quality here. If you do wear it, I'd say spray about 15 minutes or so before you arrive at your location. Overall rating 7.5/10

I can't compare this to the original since I haven't smelled it, so this "review" is based on this as a solo scent. It is certainly a formal scent and doesn't work well with every day activities. That being said, I find this to be a lovely scent after 15-20 minutes of wearing it. Not a compliment getter but I recommend buying if you want to smell high class and feel good about yourself. Only 42.99 for a 30ml so it's not going to break the bank.

Brief update upon acquiring Tuxedo: As a clone this gets about 90% close in the drydown. It just misses that beautiful opening and mid that Tuxedo has. Ask yourself if these differences warrant the $140 price difference. To me it does, but others may feel differently about it. They both have similar performance on my skin

Dank patchouli. Wait for the dry down. The vanilla really comes out. Chances are you’ve smelled this type of dna on a man before.. perhaps a man in a suit/tux, well-to-do. Not necessarily ‘old’ but accomplished and confident. He’s a man with places to go, money to spend. He doesn’t really need to wear a fragrance because he smells like money.. the ladies already love him. But if he must wear a fragrance, this is what he chooses to wear. It’s playful yet serious, light yet dark. He doesn’t really need to impress anyone, he’s already by nature, impressive. I think this type of fragrance really could make the perfect signature scent for the right man such as the one I described above. Versatile scent. Can be worn casually but works especially well for Black Tie Affairs when I actually do wear my poorly fitted Tuxedo. Update: Finally got my nose on Rochas Moustache edp and they are quite similar. So now I have a pretty good idea what the og Tuxedo smells like.

Welp... "Lattafa - Kismet" doesn't last more than 3-4 hours. So I'm going to wear that as a base layer with "AF - Black Tie Affair" layered on top to see if this imparts some life to this "Tuxedo" style fragrance. I'll put "BTA" on all my exposed parts and "Kismet" on everything covered with clothes. We'll see if this combo lasts the entire morning conference tomorrow...If not, then i'm done trying to make these "Tuxedo" style fragrances work. If it doesn't last 6+ hours...it doesn't stay in my collection.

I thought it was a bit feminine, but I really like it, so elegant... until the dry down, it smells so strange, all the wonderful smells are gone and it smells like wet dirty laundry. What a shame.

Although it comes close to the dry down of YSL’s Tuxedo, it misses the great explosion of top notes. Upon applying, one misses the heavy violet leaf/patchouli explosion that the OG delivers. It’s the main reason why I enjoy Tuxedo. Typical of AF (which makes a ton of great inspirations and few great originals), they try to match the dry down more than anything else...and that makes sense because it’s what one lives with for duration of fragrance life. Overall, it is a nice professional/sexy/intriguing fragrance as it is. Although I have much success buying from AF, I might pass on this. Longevity is slightly above average and projection is average. Go pick up a sample and get your own opinion.

If this is Yves Saint Laurent Tuxedo, I wont like it. I have gotten into some rose notes namely Seven Seas, but this falls into the normal spicy bleh that rose note is to me. I was suggested Black Tie Affair when I looked to get a travel sampler and I put aside my experiences of rose. Seven Seas is a nice rose scent and 1 Million Cologne is a nice rose too. However this is all floral spice. Black Tie Affair is too stuffy for me. It is very dressed up and I don't mind getting dressed up but it isn't me. I am not dressed up at work and rarely have weddings, funerals to wear this. I also find other scents work in that setting, but also in others. It isn't my cup of tea but maybe it is your's.

This is really close to YSLs Tuxedo. Like 85%. Not quite as smooth, but the scent profile is there. I get 4-5 hours longevity, projects for about an hour.

This one misses the mark for me. I like the violet leaf - which is always a good idea. The coriander, black pepper, and bourbon vanilla also mix well. All of those notes are noticeable but masked by the unsettling floral arrangement knocking you back a few feet. There is a pungent rose composition that will not let up, no matter how long you wait. The heavy hand in the floral corner is a consistent theme with Alexandria fragrances. This typically adds elegance and beauty to balance out a certain level of masculinity and class. This inevitably takes a backseat to complement the true stars of the show. There is none of that here. Rose in your brain this is the flower of your world. 3/10

This AF creation does not smell similar to Hanae Mori HiM to me as it is lacking the major player of cinnamon. Wait 30 minutes or so and the spicy rose starts to come through beautifully. Smells more like an intense version of YSL Ultime with the ambroxan and patchouli adding a bit of dark sweetness and depth. Another love for me.
