Over the years, their compositions have consistently explored ritual, atmosphere, and structure with a level of refinement that few houses can match or even attempt. Purpose feels like a continuation of that introspective identity, leaning into dryness, resin, and spiced woods rather than sweetness or overt opulence. On paper, the notes suggests something arid and deliberate, shaped more by earth and smoke than by florals or warmth. Even the name implies intention and grounding, hinting at a fragrance built on clarity rather than indulgence. Let’s see whether Purpose lives up to both its name and my expectations once it settles onto skin. Opening: The opening is woody, spicy, and resinous. The primary notes I get are akigalawood, black and pink pepper, olibanum, and papyrus, with the akigalawood and pepper leading the structure. The akigalawood arrives first with a distinctly dry, spicy wood character that feels structured and modern rather than creamy or rounded. It carries a subtle peppered warmth within the wood itself, giving the opening immediate depth and edge without heaviness. The black and pink pepper amplify that effect, adding a bright, nose-tickling spice that feels energetic and slightly biting. Performance: Projection is assertive from the very beginning, extending roughly six feet within the first hour and establishing an unmistakable presence. The scent trail is also dense and clearly defined early on, leaving a substantial impression without feeling chaotic. At the three to four hour mark, both projection and sillage remain largely unchanged, maintaining the same strength and reach as the initial spray. Even around seven to eight hours into the wear, projection continues to hover around six feet, with the trail softening slightly but still remaining easily noticeable. It does not settle into a skin scent until past the twelve hour mark. Overall, Purpose delivers exceptional longevity with consistently strong projection that reinforces its bold, resinous character. When to Wear: Purpose is surprisingly versatile despite its intensity. The dry woods and incense make it especially compelling in fall and winter, where its resinous depth can fully develop, yet the brightness from the peppers and bergamot allows it to remain wearable in warmer months without feeling suffocating. It transitions comfortably between daytime and evening, capable of being worn casually with restraint or elevated for formal settings and special occasions. It carries enough presence to stand out on a date night or at an event, yet enough compositional structure to avoid feeling theatrical. However, its strength and persistent incense character make it less suitable for office environments, where it could easily dominate the space. Blind Buy: Purpose is not a safe blind buy. Like many Amouage compositions, it is bold, structured, and unapologetically expressive from the very first spray. Nose Note #878 So people have been shitting on Purpose and hyping Purpose 50, I don't get it. As one person below wrote - you can't like one and dislike the other, they are pretty similar. Sure, Purpose has stronger spices that smell more gourmand and edible (hence the indian guy reference), but Purpose 50 also has similar spices, except they are buried under a coating of something sweet which is very interesting. In many ways Purpose 50 is much more appealing, I agree. But Purpose has the classic Amouage DNA, whereas Purpose 50 to me screams "I've been made by Quentin Bisch", maybe it's the akigalawood that smells like Bois Imperial and Ganymede to me, like a fruitier, spicier and less metallic/gunpowdery/out of this world. Purpose has this strong mintiness that I absolutely love. And it's very strong. Despite people voting for Purpose 50 being "eternal" I don't have that experience, I'd even say Purpose 50 is more mellow than Purpose. Again, my main issue with Purpose 50 - it smells more niche-Bisch and less like Amouage. I was wearing Purpose and my friend said I smell like lentil stew. I kind of get it, everyone in the comments has already called it "the scent of an indian dude". But dammit, this smells amazing. Feels like second skin to me. To conclude, Purpose and Purpose 50 are similar, but at the same time they are very very different. Having both is not redundant. I'm slowly realising that earthy, smokey vetivers and pepper are my thing. Sweet, coconut, youthful, fruity or gourmand not so much. This is the former and it's stunning, I love it. I get Frankincense, Vetiver, Pepper with a bit of wood, probably Sandalwood. The beautiful thing about this though is that over several hours the Rose gradually starts to come through. It never reaches any major prominence but it's there and provides the vessel for the scent to gradually change and soften as the day progresses. Mass appealing, not really. Clean, yes. Masculine, yes. Medicinal, maybe. Sexy in a outdoorsy lumberjack kind of a way. Perfectly suitable for a night out but probably not my first or second choice but that's just my preference. This is likely to become a day time signature for me. I get regular reminders I'm wearing it all day but I wouldn't say it's a monster of projection, but I generally go with 2 sprays and need to wear it more around other people to be sure. Purpose, Reflection 45 and Honour Man are my favourites of the 10 or so I've tried from Amouage. The original Reflection would have made this list in place of Reflection 45 but the last time I tried it there was more emphasis on the white flower note and it seemed a little bit lighter.

Not because of the hype, but because a brief encounter with Purpose 50 at an airport months ago left an unforgettable impression in my memory. Today I finally met the original. The first thing that came to mind was the lobby of a truly luxurious hotel in Dubai or Doha. Quiet luxury. Expensive materials. Polished stone. Warm wood. Nothing flashy, yet everything feels refined. The opening is dominated by vibrant spicy pepper wrapped in magnificent Omani frankincense. It feels sharp, but never aggressive. Then comes the surprise. As the fragrance settles, it transforms into something greener and creamier. The woods become smoother, the frankincense becomes softer, and a beautifully damp vetiver slowly appears. It feels natural, elegant and incredibly well balanced. What fascinated me the most is that Purpose doesn't seem interested in impressing you immediately. It invites you to slow down. Interestingly, I could already recognize the DNA that had captivated me in Purpose 50. Not the entire story, but clearly its roots. This is only my first day with the fragrance, and I already have the feeling that I have just finished reading the introduction of a very long and beautiful book.
