Aramis 900

Aramis 900 was one of the first of Bernard Chant's compositions that is a modulation of a previous release marketed to gents, here following the success of Aromatics Elixir two years prior. However, the two are not one in the same: a variation on a theme is not merely a "clone" or a "dupe" but can have a character all of its own. Aramis 900 trades the meadow-earthy chamomile of Aromatics Elixir, with the aldehydes mellowed, a brighter green-spicy coriander and the rose pushed more forward, reminding me a bit more of Jean Couturier Coriandre than AE in its top notes. It isn't any wonder I love all three. Soapy, radiant, but also a bit sour as it progresses into the heart, the complete absence of sweetness may read to certain sensibilities as "dated," not "date-worthy", certainly not a "club scent" or a "daily driver" for the youth. It would be a hard sell for sure, but it fits me like a glove. Give me a sour green, rosy chypre any old day over something that makes me smell "like a snack." Trigger warning to formulation nerds: it confounds me why there's so much talk of this (and other Aramis Gentleman's Collection relaunch versions) are "shadows of their former selves." Is it actually a miracle to have pretty much all of them bloom and persist on my skin? The "new" Aramis 900 for one lingers for hours, just long enough for me to feel full satisfaction. I've sampled older versions of all of them, and save for Devin, they are nearly indistinguishable, and even with the Devin, it's a completely solid and wearable effort. But I digress... Aramis 900 dries down into a blissful woody-patchouli base with a warm, slight touch of civet: nothing aggressively animalic, but I don't believe that was the intention. A civet accord (or more often accent) wasn't always meant to be aggressively animalic to begin with and is poorly understood. I'd even argue that certain turned bottles may seem a bit more animalic because of whatever chemical degradation had done to the bases: it's just a theory. This whole topic of olfactory perception in vintages of arguable condition is ripe for discussion. In the meantime, I will enjoy lavishing myself with the brilliant 900.

i really like that initial spray of civet rose and light dry dustyness. in a bit a fresh greenness comes in, lily of the valley. there is warmth to the scent generally, from what must be the civet. and that green fresh floral is pleasant and a wonderful developement. It's quite perfumy. the spicy dry woody dustyness grounds this scent in the earth, and along with some fresh greenery ensures it's masculine. there is a touch of a soapy scent in there faintly, for just a brief second if you look for it. the pleasing rose and fresh floral greenness lifts and a spicy dirtyness comes to the foreground, patchouli, and mixes with the rose before taking over and mixing with the warm civet. later, after not too much time, the spicyness settles and a lightly fruity rose and buttery background remains. pretty good scent really. it has developement and complexity. the scent after spraying is very pleasing, and continues on as it evolves, and it becomes more spicy before settling down. The description on the box says "an addictive, herbal fragrance that embodies tradition with a dash of the unexpected" I am not exactly sure what the unexpected is, perhaps it is the transition from floral to earthy.. when the patchouli comes in. similar vibes from other scents which come to mind are van cleef and arpels pour homme for the rose petal and spice, oscar de larenta pour lui for the floral, and kiehls original musk for the civet. a touch of havana by aramis in terms of the spice. I am quite pleasantly surprised by this purchase. rose, civet, patchouli.. lily of the valley.. wonderful

Oh dear @richmilton - your review including "Gentleman's Collection is very close", only serves to reinforce that you have no idea what you're talking about. Yet you go on to say "vintage is best" which was EXACTLY the point of my review. I've been wearing Aramis 900 in all of its iterations for 40 years. The Gentleman's Collection formulation, although good, was nowhere near as complex as the vintage versions which remained almost unaltered up til 2005. I suspect you haven't smelled Clinique Aromatics - it's widely acknowledged on this website and on many beyond as being the nearest fragrance to original Aramis 900 - same perfumer, similar notes and identical phases from opening to dry down. I'm not a shill, have nothing to sell - "crappy bottles" or otherwise - and my review was a celebration of the vintage version (which you seem to agree with) which is becoming harder to find. I compare it favourably to Clinique Aromatics, which is still easy to source at Clinique counters globally. As for "the latest crap" - there is no new formulation of this fragrance. It's discontinued. Unless you mean Clinique Aromatics; which was launched two years BEFORE Aramis 900 - it's not new and it certainly isn't "crap." The comparison format between two similar fragrances is used widely on Fragrantica, which begs the question; what exactly about my original review did you find to be "BS"? Please do better if you reply/rebut, be factual/knowledgeable and try not to embarrass yourself any more than you already have.

I took the chance recently to do a wrist-to-wrist comparison of my vintage bottle (brown stripy glass with a gold lid) and the current version from the Gentlemen's Collection, and yes indeed I did find them to be slightly different from one another, especially in their openings. Immediately on spraying, the rose note in my vintage is much sharper/shriller/harsher and sweeter than the current formula - frankly at this point the vintage could knock someone out with its strength. The current formula is still a close copy of the original but overall is smoother with a more refined vibe. I also noticed a strong civet note in the current formula that is missing in my vintage formulation - I'm not sure, perhaps the vintage had that civet note originally but it has since disappeared due to the age of my bottle? Anyway, they both settle very quickly into the familiar and excellent woody-mossy-herbal base. The current formula lasts around 6 hours on my skin compared to the 4 hours of the vintage, although it could be explained by ageing of the basenotes in my vintage causing a loss of their potency. Much as I love the vintage and prefer its evocative bottle, I think the current version although smoother is still excellent and perhaps even the better of the two. Good job Estee!

I first smelled Aramis 900 in my childhood. My Father wore it back in the 70's and 80's with his dark suits. I remember liking it back then, and when I was post college I bought my first bottle. I've always considered it a Monday through Friday, 9 to 5 scent although in my fragrance wardrobe it also serves my casual side. It is eternally fresh and clean. I don't find it to be an old man's scent or outdated, and(but)I'm only 41. I recently purchased the "Gentleman's Collection" release, and I'm enjoying it all over again. If it had been reformulated, my nose can't tell. The only difference for me is the bottle. I still LOVE it! The scent is not a "flanker" of the original Aramis, and doesn't remind me of it. 900 opens with a clean, green, slightly sweet citrus. Florals take over soon, but the citrus remains throughout. The floral notes are well blended as no single note stands out. It's very crisp and clean, dry and herbal. There is a powdery, almost soapy woodiness to it that I love. I feel great when I wear it. It lasts ten to twelve hours on my skin. In the warmer months it works for me. It doesn't become stale in the heat, but seems to come and go as if it refreshes itself. I like this quality about it. If you have the chance try it. I highly recommend it.

Aramis 900 is a case that reformulation might be a bless sometimes... Among all the perfumes that I've tried, both reformulations and vintages (most of them are before 1990), Aramis 900 is such a rare example for successful inheritance to the soul of its vintage version and keeping up with the times by duly modernising the composition. In fact, the biggest or maybe the only difference between the reformulation and the black-bottle vintage is the animalic note, while the oakmoss is really not a big deal here since some big business who own a resourceful research team can have the capacity to simulate this accord by some compounds, see what Guerlain managed to do in Mitsouko 2013. Civet in the vintage, only in the first 30 minutes or so, is the very incarnation of hyperandrogenism, overwhelmingly dirty and carnal. As for the reformulation, civet is restrained to accord with modern aethetic taste as to be more versatile today but by no means to lose the spirit of its former glory. And there is almost no other difference you can tell anymore, especially in the drydown. If you are looking for a more rooty and woody interpretation, or a unisex and younger variant of Aramis 900, don't forget to check L'Artisan Parfumeur Voleur de Roses. Rating: 8.5

Because I love everything old and the antiques.. yesterday I bought Aramis 900.. and with the first spray as if I went back by the time machine to the middle of the eighties .. to my elementary school days! .. Yes my teacher.. she was wearing this perfume ( may b the aromatics elixir specially they r very near) .. Anyway she was a very serious character .. everyone was afraid of her .. She was short .. sexy has a rounded curvey body .. every morning wearing a tight floral clothes and put a full makeup on her face !.. her perfume that oozes and dictates the school !.. Aramis 900 perfume reminds me well of this woman .. it's look like a floral shirt with a black background .. fits a person in his 40s .. a person who is more evil than good but in the end very very attractive ..Why they didn't call it "DIRTY ROSE" instead of 900 !.. It's smell dark .. sexy .. for the evening.. all seasons .. acceptable longevity and sillage.. I don't know if I am right or wrong but it reminds me of Cartier declaration d'un soir intense .. finally it seems very suitable with me when I am going to do something bad !..

While Aramis 900 is often dismissed as an "old man" cologne by kids today, bear this in mind: when 900 was first introduced, it certainly wasn't targeting old men. Like all new releases from global companies, it was aimed squarely at the young man of the day. The same age-group who scoops up Bleu de Chanel, Aventus, or whatever the latest, greatest flavor of the day happens to be. Of course, tastes have changed. Aramis 900 speaks to an elegance, refinement, and masculinity that lies beyond the grasp of modern sensibilities. Once upon a time, well-dressed men would wear an ascot as a casual alternative to a necktie. Today, ascots are hard to pull off without looking costumey or elitest. In that sense, you might consider Aramis 900 the ascot of men's cologne. Bernard Chant created a beautiful and sophisticated manly scent. Sadly, it embraces those masculine qualities that are no longer in vogue. I, for one, love ascots. I also love Aramis 900. And I miss that world. This fragrance allows me to revisit those days...one whiff at a time.

A friend gave me a bottle of this very familiar, EDT in 2006 after he said it turned to “cat pee” on him. It worked on me, thank goodness. I enjoyed the clean, fresh, garden air, classic scent, bringing on memory rushes from times when the Aramis range seemed to be the top 5 men’s choice on every exclusive retail store here in ZA during the late eighties and nineties. I found this beautiful scent superb for everyday use which made me feel as invigorated, clean, (inoffensively soapy,) and as confident as any business executive may be forgiven for feeling, while sporting this magic liquid. It is however rather a generic scent “signature” as has been around for so long I guess it has mingled with so many other popular scents over time, thus lost its uniqueness. You may easily be labeled by a lover of perfume as “un-original,” if you purchase this but if smelling amazing means more to you than opinion, then go for it. It is a safe purchase. You cannot go wrong, even if you buy it blind in my opinion. My vote: 4.4/5

Is this really for men? Well, it would be great ! If a woman buys this for you, you know she wants to be around you. My first thought was a rosy, airy coriander added to Aromatics Elixir. In fact, I think you could get an almost exact, but stronger, replica by layering Jean Couturier Coriandre with Aromatics Elixir. I'm certain I've done this mix before, because I love A.E. on my hair no matter what perfume I have on otherwise. It goes with practically everything if it's like second skin to you. LOVE this on me....on anyone. It is grounding, comforting, sexy and individual. The introvert's perfect scent. Clean but Earthy like autumn. This is catnip that creeps up on you! I only have a sample that sprays lightly and still found this to be fairly light after several squirts. Perhaps it will be different for those with a bottle spray, but my impression is: Low-moderate sillage and fair/good longevity. Fantastic in the heat of summer, but it would be nice any time of year and perhaps more green in winter.

Currently experiencing vintage cologne.. I'm wowed! Addictive. So much more depth and character than the Gentleman's Collection version. It's somehow chaotic - accords jumping out at you - but at the same time, linear and smooth. Ten - fifteen minutes in, I'm mainly smelling the floral mids; Carnation. Geranium. Lily of the valley Jasmine. These create a delicate, grandma-ish bouquet, however there's a funk, there. Unsure what that is, but it must be the Jasmine and Civet. This is difficult to liken to another perfume or, describe in general. It's oriental/chypre to me, somewhat like Opium for men and women, without the fruit accords, with the aformentioned florals and funk. Very much a Bernard Chant creation, if you dig his work. I had the Gentleman's Collection 900 and the smell evoked, what I imagined, a disco era setting. However, I was never around, then. But, now I have the vintage, not so much, maybe a mature disco patron. I guess, if you like Chype that have an Oriental twist, check it out.

A well cut suit and a spritzing of 900 will instantly turn you into a man others aspire to be. Hmm, let's flesh this out. In today's world, men under the age of forty simply don't wear fragrances like these. They're *shudder/cringe* DATED. God, how I abhor that term when it comes to fragrance. So many bandy it about, but inevitably follow it up with, "....but I wear it, I just don't tell anyone what it is." Listen, if you're not confident enough with yourself to tell someone the damn perfume you're wearing, you've issues. This stuff is liquid gold. Fresh citrus and crushed herbs that turn into a musky, ALMOST musty, rose, and finally, the herbaceous and civet-y woodiness. THIS is a power scent. Not one that makes its presence known by screeching up your nostrils, but one that makes you turn your head when someone wearing it walks past. Anyone can make you look up by being loud and boorish, but it takes a cut above to get that second glance. Anyhow, tl;dr, buy this, wear this, smell good

With pronounced floral top notes and stronger initial sillage than my normal fragrances, Aramis 900 took a short while to grow on me and for me to be comfortable with it. Aramis 900 is herbal and debuted in 1973, toward the end of the back-to-the-land, hippie era but the accords are sophisticated and provide an upscale, urbane herbal scent. The fashion and fragrance industries had appropriated elements of the counterculture by 1973 so the overlap is natural. Entertainers, athletes, Formula One drivers, and others had let their hair grow and were wearing more denim, leading to such oxymoronic terms as "rich hippie," "jet-set hippie," "playboy hippie," etc. Aramis 900 may be approaching 50 years since launch, but it isn't old nor is it dated. Depending on who one asks and which day they ask, 900 is among the fragrances Aramis is discontinuing, so I'm buying back-up bottles - ditto for Devin and Havana.

The current formulation of Clinique Aromatics Elixir is the nearest you'll get to experiencing Aramis 900 from the 1980's (as opposed to the rehashed "Gentleman's Collection" formulation which was re-marketed in the clear square bottle.) There are a few slight differences: Aromatics Elixir opens slightly softer and less sharp than original Aramis 900 - I think this is due to it having no lemon top note which projected wildly in Aramis 900. The absence of civet, which gave Aramis 900 that distinctive 80's animalic funk, is also missing; which may actually make it more wearable for most people. However, these slight differences aside, the recently masterfully reformulated version of Aromatics Elixir dries down to an almost indistinguishable replica of original Aramis 900 - an aromatic, floral, herbal chypre powerhouse with fantastic longevity and projection. Distinctive, classy and timeless.

Update: For the new bottle - I don't think it's the same anymore. I suppose the next time around will be Aromatics Elixir but worn sparingly to get the same effect. Jason G 121312 Review for the previous style bottle: For some reason I find myself comparing other frangrances with this as if it were a benchmark to judge by. I've had this since the mid '80s and still love it. It's not quiet and as the day goes it gets lighter in its linear kind of way (it lasts all day). Definitely herbal and rosey. I like florals and I like roses. I'm not sure if the current bottle has a reformulation in it since I still have the old style bottle. I think that when I've smelled this in public on a woman I thought it was A900 but I have a feeling it was AE instead. I cannot believe this gorgeous rose chypre sells many places online for less than $30! It is one of the nicest fragrances I've ever used--it's sophisticated, romantic, and complex. The rose predominates, but you immediately get the oakmoss (how Aramis gets away with an oakmoss note today is beyond me) and the bergamot and lemon bring a kind of fruitiness to the rose that makes the whole accord smell almost like it has apricot or jackfruit in it. (This reminds me very much of Rogue Perfumery's Flora & Fauna, which has so many of the same notes in it.) Although this is animalic, I don't sense anything urinous about it. I feel so lucky to have found such a great fragrance that costs so little and yet smells so refined and is so versatile. This is a tremendous bargain.

Aramis 900 Herbal is undoubtedly a classy men's cologne. When I first sprayed it on my skin the amazing aroma of Brazilian Rosewood with lemon and bergamot which gives it depth and a pleasant appeal. It dries back beautifully and it takes on more of a delicately mixed blend of jasmine and rose scent. I'm also able to pick the deep notes of amber, patchouli and sandalwood which gives it a fresh clean cologne with a slight floral blend but nothing that would resemble a feminine perfume. I love that it's longevity is well past 8 hour's on my skin. Aramis 900 is most certainly an excellent choice as a evening cologne. A lot enjoy this cologne because it brings back pleasant memories...as they say "the good old days". This cologne is a timeless MASTERPEICE. 10/10

To me, Aramis 900 invokes a dusty sharp rose and carnation fragrance warmed by civet and oakmoss. Once the scent has settled on my body a lovely soft patchouli begins to emerge. There is also a a kind of chill to the fragrance, a slight “iciness”, perhaps? Reminds me of subtle classiness and style. I’d imagine a gentleman OR lady wearing this as they’re waiting in a beautiful lobby of a 5star hotel, cigarette smoke swirling around you, the scent echos the glimmering kiss of the diamonds and fine jewelry both are surly wearing. This is an often overlooked fragrance as it’s charm is underrated by other more mainstream, popular noted fragrances. You have to have a deep love for chypres, strong abstract rose and oakmoss with a wild touch of civet.

یکی از دوست داشتنی ترین عطرهای مورد علاقه ام که حتی فامیل هم هنوز از آن گاهی یاد میکنند و زمانی که مصرف میکردم خیلی ها خوششان میامد و سوال میکردند تنها چیزی که مدتهاست مرا از وسوسه خرید آن باز میدارد پائین آوردن دوام این عطر است که قبلا خیلی با دوام و پخش بوی خوبی داشت و الان همچون گذشته ندارد و همه عطر فروش ها هم این نکته را قبول دارند و مورد دوم تعغییر آمبولانژ این ادکلن است که به نظرم طرح قبلی و اولیه آن خیلی مناسب بود و الان آرامیس همه عطرهای خود را دارد به یک آمبولانژ میزند و یان کار صحیحی نیست شاید مشتریان جدید و تازه ای را به همراه بیاورد اما مسلما مشتریان سابق را مقداری از دست خواهد داد چون از لحاظ روانی مشتری های قدیمی با آن آمبولانژ و بسته بندی چشمانشان عادت کرده بوده است کاری شیک مردانه با نشاط و فرش کلاسیک جذاب دوست داشتنی
