Blueberry Chypre

Sampling Aromas de Salazar Blueberry Chypre, as innovative and intriguing as it sounds, a fresh burst of blueberry juice infused with a fresh, green, woody, floral blend, featuring an opening of bergamot and pink pepper, a mixed floral heart, and highly resinous dry down. It’s dense and powerful, but multifaceted and well-rounded, feeling complete. Moreover, it’s unlike anything I’ve smelled before, the way that the blueberry fruit is blended so seamlessly into hearty chypre template. It’s an instant love for me, and I think that this could work for anyone, though occasion-wise, I think I would be quite selective in how I wear it, though it has the utility of a classic chypre with wafts of gourmand, fresh but opulent, long-lasting but not overbearing. I’m really impressed by this creation, among the best that I’ve smelled from the house and a clear indication of Michael Salazar’s skill and vision. Blueberry Chypre is priced at $175 for 500ml, somewhere in the middle of the catalogue’s range, and is seemingly sold exclusively on the house website, though my understanding remains that Perfumology will carry the full line in the near future. The price is very reasonable for a fragrance of this quality and high performance, in my opinion. 8 out of 10

Very unique take on a classical chypre! I just love how Salazar did this masterpiece. Instead of classical citruses this begins with a noticeable fresh blueberry note that lasts for 30 minutes or so. Then dries down to a classical, masculine chypre. If you are a fan of chypre-style perfumes, this is a must try!

The first 4ish hours are wonderful. Sweet and warm, yet fresh. In a positive way, this reminds me of a fall night spent at an amusement park. Crisp fresh air, berries dropped from trees being smashed on the concrete, and a warm funnel cake. I would hesitate to fully call this a gourmand as the woodiness and amber does come through quite a lot, but the blueberry does seem to bring out a gourmand element from the various components in this composition. However as it lingers past the 4 hours mark it loses the sweet and bright notes, and what lingers are the animalics. On this dry down I’m less than thrilled. It becomes as my, wife put it, “musty and dusty.” Not unpleasant necessarily but very vintage, and very musky. Thankfully it doesn’t ever lean to the fecal side of some animalics, but regardless it has made me turn against this fragrance a bit unfortunately. I guess you could routinely reapply, but then I’d fear the animalics would only build. I would debate getting a bottle of this however I’m not sure I’d ever make my way through 50mls, and for the price point I find that to be not worth it for me personally. I wish this brand had some smaller bottles at a lower price point, but alas.
