Moonwind

So trying out all of these vintage Avon scents has taught me something about myself: I smell great in chypre fragrances. I didn't have the fragrance vocabulary as a child to know that that's why I liked Moonwind so much. Whereas Sweet Honesty and Zany are clean powder scents, and Persian Wood and Cotillion are spicy Orientals, the most surprising scents for me this week have been Somewhere, Candid, Occur! and Moonwind, all classic chypre fragrances. Of these three Moonwind is the lightest, but she's still lovely. Here's the breakdown: First drops applied by pipette to wrists, neck, and pits. A warm, gently soapy scent hits. There's a definite slightly sour citrus punch too, initially a strong grapefruit. Don't worry, she doesn't hang around too long. By hour two she's dried down into a cozy bergamot, lightly mossy, cedar, sandalwood, white musky scent, and I mean cozy. This scent is relaxing. I also realize something else I didn't know as a kid. Like many Avon scents this one is vaguely familiar: Miss Dior! Definitely Avon's sister scent. I think classic Moonwind smells closer to classic Miss Dior than the current pink version Dior makes. By hour 4 she's gone, but I don't mind reapplying early. I have a couple of these little bottles from the 80's. I'm going to make the absolute most of them. Moonwind is one of those rare "anytime, any place, any season" scents. Sadly, they stopped making this one too. However, bottles can still be found all over the place so if you find one out in the wild for $5-10 it's worth a shot. You're not going to find classic Miss Dior for that, or new Miss Dior for that matter either. Night Magic was similar, and they still make that one, though I have no idea what the current version smells like. I really should remedy that. But Moonwind is a definite win for me. Hubby absolutely loved it too, so that's always a bonus.

Thrift stores stock them, and they only set you back a few dollars, but I am always reluctant to sniff Avon perfumes. To call them "hit or miss" somehow feels like an understatement. Some of them are on par with Guerlain et al, and some smell like strange chemical abominations. Fortunately, "Moonwind perfume concentre" is a $5 stunner, a classic chypre floral. It goes on with an aldehydic sheen, gentle herbs and florals peaking through. Lavender, sage, a honeyed, pollen-like note of narcissus, iris powder, softened by an undercurrent of sweet ambery musk material. Alongside their signature "Avonade", the base contains some raspy oakmoss & angular vetiver. Avon perfumes generally time out quickly, but Moonwind has enough going on to keep it interesting. If you can imagine Dior releasing an extension line of products for 1947 Miss Dior; Moonwind would approximate the talcum powder. Hopefully this comparison paints a clear image. Like most Avon perfumes, Moonwind has a cosmetic aspect to the scent. It's a rather powdery and soapy wearing experience. I find it nostalgic and endearing, and if you don't mind these qualities, the perfume has an otherwise gorgeous DNA; some natural materials, good progression, and a distinctive trail. It's quite beautiful, certainly among the best vintage Avon perfumes I've sampled. I see why it's so popular and highly rated on the database. I wish it would last longer, but otherwise I have no complaints.

When this fragrance debuted, I was a young child and my mother sold Avon. So I must have smelled this back then, but I don't remember it. Fast forward to the 2000s when, after her mother's death, a friend of mine gave me a 'senorita' bottle of this that had been her mom's. I was touched just to have the bottle, and didn't realize that perfumes could survive for so long, so it didn't occur to me to sample the fragrance until some years later. And then I discovered...something I feel is unique, and very hard to describe. Moonwind, the lovechild of the Age of Aquarius and the period of the moon landings, a fragrance that simultaneously inspires from the past and exhales into the future. As other reviewers have noted, a perfume that is green, serene, and meditative. And...is there musk in this? Because I get musk, which enchants me all the more. Moonwind is a potion to put on a cotton ball and tuck into your pillowcase to induce beautiful dreams, to apply to your corsage and wrists and dream of unicorns, to inhale to relieve you of the stresses of the modern world. Everyone should experience it at least once.

Moonwind is the smell of my early childhood visits to my grandmother. She and my grandfather had quite a few Avon colognes, soaps, talcum powder, and aftershaves when I was little. They all merged into one smell in the bathroom unless I picked them up and smelled them individually, which of course I did. My grandfather's aftershaves all had what I now know to be a lot of oakmoss and vetiver. My grandmother's colognes were either powdery florals, like lilac, or a bit more like my grandfather's scents. Now I understand why. She clearly had Moonwind. Today I got lucky enough to find a beautiful 4 oz peacock-shaped bottle of it at a thrift shop. It couldn't have been opened before; the cologne is vintage, but not degraded. the aldehydes, spicy oakmoss, soft floral, and green notes are intact. Scent has the ability to put your mind solidly into a setting from the past, and Moonwind has done that for me. I thought I was just buying a beautiful bottle today. Instead, a cologne reminded of my grandmother.

Cool, mossy, blue green. A little contemplative, a little lonely, a little sad. But also euphoric, and nostalgic. Beautiful. There's definitely musk in this one, and I'm not sure if it's animal or nitro,but it's a variety that isn't used any more. It's in the old avonade, and definitely present here. I have a small strawberry full of the pure perfume and a large blue plastic aresol(sp?)of the colonge mist, which I layer. These are chock full of natural ingredients I wager. That oakmoss is just heavenly. I recommend getting some of this while you still can on eBay. The prices are going up and stock is going down,it seems. This is a magical perfume from a bygone time. They don't make em like this too much anymore! I love it!

I got a small bottle of Moonwind from a thrift store. I think that in the context of modern norms, it leans slightly masculine. Some of its most prominent notes are more associated with men's fragrances nowadays, maybe because many of the older fragrances still in production are men's, and the ones still worn by women have gravitated more universally toward sweet, floral, fruity, or gourmand types. Moonwind is a powdery soapy fragrance that I find to be somewhat comparable to Stetson for Men.

I cannot imagine anything more fairy-like than this fragrance. I live by the woods and it gives me the vision of a little fairy flitting by my window wearing a dress of leaves and a crown of moss carrying a gauzy little cloud of moonwind around her. Maybe on a warm spring night with the moon glinting off her wings. Someone used the word diaphanous which is perfect. If you crave real oakmoss, this is your fragrance.

I love this i was brought it by my mother when i was little, for my birthday my husband found an bottle of it in ebay same bottle original box and nearly full, every now and then i take a sniff and think of my mother and im a child again

WOW I am amazed. Trying today a vintage mini perfume in a shoe bottle. This is NICE perfume. Reminds me of Youth Dew somewhat, but not so spicy. I really like this and most definately recommend it. Fresh and sexy at the same time.

Perfect nighttime scent. Nice powdery chypre with some spicy oakmoss. I love these old Avon beauties, very evocative and sentimental.

My sister tells me our Mom wore this back in the 1970's. One of several. But this Moonwind is decidedly masculine. With prominent accords of Woody, Earthy, Green, and Mossy, nine times out of ten its going to at least lean masculine. And Moonwind does, despite the marketing to women, and the votes here on Fragrantica by people too easily swayed by marketing and insufficient experience. A woody Aromatic, somewhere between a vintage Fougere and an Aldehydic Chypre. My sister and two other voters here on Fragrantica thinks this smells like Stetson, and I can understand the comparison. I have Stetson in my collection along with a ton of other vintage masculines. Moonwind just doesn't have enough going on in scent profile to stand out against Stetson and most of the others. Stetson has a honey note. Moonwind could use something like that. The aldehydes are really apparent but not overbearing, although Im not the biggest fan of aldehydes. I'd rather have the aldehydes replaced with honey to be honest. But all in all Moonwind isn't bad.

I was walking home from coffee with an old friend when I found a "free" box by the side of the road. To my utter astonishment, it contained five bell-shaped Avon bottles WITH perfume still in them. In addition, there were lead-crystal bowls and I grabbed two of those as well. Somehow, after all these years, this perfume is still good. There wasn't much left in the bottle, and it was rather thick and oily in consistency. Maybe somehow the alcohol evaporated and left behind all the oil in good condition? Anyway, maybe some of the top notes have degraded, but it still smells rich and romantic. I'm very fortunate to have happened upon it. I liked Moonwind a lot, but Husband complained I smelled like a grandma. There wasn't much of it left in the bottle anyway.

Avon nailed the title of this fragrance, as it perfectly represents a nocturnal breeze, caressing freshly bathed skin, eyes cast upward to the sky. Powdery freshness of Narcissus and lavender, aerated with the use of soapy aldehydes, sit close to the skin, intimately comforting. Green notes are playful, but only in the sense that lunar reflections transform moss, grass, and vetiver into a darkened state of reflective light, heavy, dripping with atmosphere. It's simple and soft, with just enough sparkle left to sing you to sleep. Disguised as green scent and marketed to women, this could easily open its fougere structure into a world of gender neutral delight.

Taking a blind whiff of a fresh and most likely very well preserved moonwind dispensed on to a blotter strip from a peacock bottle, I guessed oak moss, vetiver, and linalool, green/sharp. This lines up pretty well with the notes, and I can definitely see where the lavender and grapefruit come in too. The floral notes work really well and come through as it dries. Slaps, would probably wear well on most people, and you really can't argue with a peacock shaped bottle, or the original ribbed blue art deco revival atomizer bottle for that matter.

This stiffest, most vertical, staunchest chypre of Avon’s glory days would suit a Henry James villainess. Piercing aldehydes, vigorous oakmoss, and icy vetiver are only fortified by an almost astringent lavender note. It reminds me a bit of givenchy iii but lacks the soft heart notes of that fragrance. I respect this one more than like it, and am probably too much of a flouncy sentimentalist to pull it off, but to those who can I say yes ma’am or sir whatever you say ma’am or sir 🥶🫡

A woody green chypre that could easily pass for unisex as the lavender and vetiver keeps this one from being strongly feminine. I don't wear it often but have a lot of it due to my growing collection of Avon vintage perfume bottles. Probably my favorite perfume name of all time, simple as it is. I like it better after about half an hour, when it softens nicely and the green becomes quite beautiful.

This is an interesting fragrance. I would say it reminds me a lot of a smoker who loves essential oils, the essential oils overpowering the smoky notes. It's not terrible, but it isn't a favorite of mine. I would say this is one of the Avon fragrances that isn't offensive to the nose. I would say that it's good, and that it reminds me of hippies, which may have been the goal.

Opens with a strong aldehyde which carries with it fresh citrus. It is light hearted and slighty soapy. Once the aldehydes float away it becomes a greener scent but still with a soap tint. After thirty minutes, oakmoss and vetiver dominate creating a green woody feel.

I would say this is the most Woody of the ones that I have but overall just a very okay scent for collection. This is the only scent that I have in a car-shaped bottle, though it is only a horse-drawn wagon/buggy type car, not one of like the actual rare vintage cars💔

One of several once-upon-a-time women's fragrances whose notes have since been shifted maleward, making this now perfectly wearable by men, too.
