Unforgettable

My wonderful friend Cat scored me a full bottle of this stuff, in its original box, at an estate sale, along with some other great Avon finds. This one is in a beautiful glass bottle that reminds me of my favorite Chicago building, and it smells like a great floral chypre. The goldtone top is real metal, a nice change from the plastic that dominates most similarly priced perfumes. Not sure if it just aged beautifully or if always smelled like that, but this so-called cologne is as strong or stronger than most EDPs. What a find! I might upgrade this like to a love once I do a skin test--it has passed the paper test with flying colors--but I'm wearing another perfume right now and don't want to overwhelm my senses and/or skin. I keep wanting to take it out of its beautiful box so I can admire it some more. I have the one that says Rondelle at the top, which confused me because I couldn't find that in the database. (Unforgettable appears in much smaller type below it on the box.) I think Unforgettable might have been Avon's attempt to mimic or at least do an "impression of" the original Miss Dior, or maybe one of the Chanels (because of the very assertive aldehydes, which aren't listed but very obviously there); they did a fine, even amazing, job, especially at the original (affordable) price point. I'm doing a skin test now, and I really love this. The unlisted aldehydes plus the leather note smell expensive to me, and there is as much or more oakmoss as there should be in any respectable chypre. I can't believe how good this is. I'm upgrading to a Love. This is a vintage bottle, completely full, in the original box (looks like 80s, possibly late 70s). The metal screw top lid obviously kept it in perfect condition. What a wonderful fragrance! It's supposed to be a cologne, but it outperformed a contemporary EDP on a paper test I started earlier today. I haven't been wearing it very long, but I think on the skin it will perform well also, if not as impressively as it does on paper. I can't speak to the current version of Unforgettable, but my guess is it must smell very different, because this much oakmoss in an inexpensive perfume is simply not going to happen these days (not legally anyway). So grateful for my friend who trawls the estate sales for perfumes for me; she has already given me a bunch of wonderful vintage fragrances. Update: I decanted most of my vintage Unforgettable to a 10-ml purse-size/travel sprayer, sacrilegious though that might be and as gorgeous as the dabber bottle is to behold. I just find that I get better performance with colognes if I have a good fine sprayer, so I put it into nice glass vial with one of those dandy opaque metal twist cases. I haven't worn this out yet, but I think Unforgettable would need to be refreshed every few hours anyway, since it is a cologne, after all. I was wearing Patou 1000 earlier today, and this older formulation of Unforgettable that I have is not exactly the same but very compatible. A floral leather chypre, with loads of oak moss. What's not to love? Update: I'm so fretful about running out of this vintage stuff--with the real oakmoss and other alluringly illegal substances--that I'm now getting backup bottles, of dubious provenance, off eBay, smdh.

Gorgeous mossy-leather number with some truly amazing packaging. You might think floral from the notes but nope a light but sort of greasy (in a good way) leather note and slightly pungent moss dominate against a backdrop of spicy carnation, with just enough of the other notes to round it out and keep it light and fresh feeling. For sure speaks to a certain brand of 60s femininity but if you ignore the packaging this could pass as totally unisex by today’s standards. Worth picking up if you’re a vintage moss & leather lover or even a wearer of modern leather frags... just be prepared for a heavy dose of oak moss! I also love using this as a base under more top-heavy frags :-) Edit: above review was for the rubberized edc aerosol bottle. I have recently obtained the perfume oil and all I can say is wow! Rich unctuous dark sexy. Rly amazing probably one of my more favorite vintage perfumes I own???? Avon rly did that

I wish the opening would stay forever. It smells like the delicious dry-down of Miss Balmain, but transforms into a less-exciting powdery skin scent as time goes on. Still really nice and overall a great alternative to the expensive (and hard to find) Miss Balmain that I love so much. I have a perfect (and probably never opened or used) 1 oz splash cologne still with its bamboo motif box, and will definitely be seeking out more products from the line; hopefully one of the perfume bath oils that Avon made so many of mid-century, but I'd also love to find a body powder and a bigger bottle of cologne!

My sister loved wearing this perfume. I never understood why and totally forgot how it smelled. I was too enamored with Avon Occur and civet (though I'd never heard of civet). Tonight, I tested from a roll-on with different appreciation from bottle sent by a Fragrantican friend. It is, IMO, a very good scent, but the roll-on version wears too close to the skin. Still, I'm considering an ebay purchase since this is a chypre surprise with leather, which my teenage nose found strange. The leather note is not so strong that it overpowers, at all. Just an all over well blended fragrance.

My Mom bought a bottle of this perfume right before it was discontinued (sometime in the 1980's?)and we shared it. The carnation made me sneeze a little, but overall this was a VERY strong, warm, mossy and sexy leather-dominant fragrance, which I think could also be worn by men. Sillage and longevity were incredible. We only had a small bottle, but when Mom passed away in 1999 there was a little bit remaining, which I used up that year.

I think the second grin I got from this was the irony of its name - Unforgettable, when truly, it is a bit forgettable. Possessing a soapy aldehydic note that resembles Safeguard's Antibacterial bar soap from the 80's. For me, it's difficult to peer past that hard-wired connection. My first grin, however, was an astonishingly impressed one. Avon finally got a bit gritty! Marketed as a feminine scent in the early 60's, this isn't a kitty, this is Cat woman herself! Equipped with a hissing black whip and donned in proper skin-tight attire and dazzling sharp razor claws. Labdanum, oakmoss and patchouli slinking like sweat, and reeking of the earth that she seemed to spring from. Whispers of carnation graze skin - movements swiftly pushing air. I wish it was here, in this dark and dirty suggestive space, we were allowed to explore longer. But it seems that Miss Kitty had to go home and take a bath, slip in her frumpy tweed suits, and get back to work. Yes, we're back in bar soap territory, but if you hold your nose to your wrist just long enough, disguised as she may be, you can still sense a purr resonating deep within.

this opens with tons of oakmoss, some leather and floral notes, but then it gets kind of soapy on me...i am guessing it's rose? i see the similarity to cabochard, but i find cabochard to be far more green and leathery and heavy, which i prefer. this is pretty though. if bandit/cabochard are too heavy and/or strong, this might work? it's less bitter and less leathery with less of a bite.

Something about this perfume makes me feel scared. I think it reminds me of my grandmother. Very strong chypre that dries down to a sorta powder smell on me. The beginning reminds me of Aromatics Elixir by Clinique, but sharper.

It smells exactly like my great grandmother, and no that is not a compliment. I did get it for a fair price at least. I found it at an Estate sale originally marked at $16, but it was 75% off. I ended up getting it and a few other mini perfumes for like $15, please go to estate sales if you want to find mini perfumes. It’s not good over all.

I bought a .5 ounce bottle of the cologne in a "snowflake" bottle (circa 1964). I tested it on a slip of acid-free resume paper. I wear a lot of vintage Guerlain, Chanel, and other French perfumes and vintage Guerlain colognes but I am a little shy about actually wearing old Avon cologne on my body. Unforgettable is a really strong chypre fragrance. It has a real mid-century vibe and I suspect it may be a copy of another popular fragrance from that time. I discovered Avon Rapture is a copy of Mitsouko but I am not sure what other fragrances Unforgettable smells like. I get oak moss and a little peach and some other stuff like sandalwood or myrrh. I see a lot of vintage Avon fragrances that are listed as "perfume oil". I am also a little uncertain about buying those since I am not sure about what kind of "oil" was used to manufacture them. I feel more comfortable with vintage colognes since they are alcohol based. I find vintage Guerlain colognes in the montre flacon/watch bottle are reliably good and wearable. Unfortunately Avon made a cheaper product and right out of the bottle the cologne smells pretty awful. Putting a few drops on the acid-free paper and letting it sit a while and dry out worked well for getting a sense of the smell. Reminds me of the 1960's smell of the ladies at church on Sunday when everyone is crowding the door trying to shake the preacher's hand on the way out.

Test 2: This sample is from a circa 1963 dram bottle ( glass cylinder with a brass screw-top) of perfume in the cutest box. The box design shows a woman's face on a sun/flower shape that wraps half the box with a corner of the box in the center of the face. The box has raised pattern of colored paisleyish embellishments that is very tactile and the whole thing is reminiscent of the art of Mary Blair. The perfume is much nicer than the 1964 .5 ounce cologne. It is wearable and reminds me of the original Miss Dior perfume (in the Baccarat amphora bottle); a musky chypre. Really nice but I agree with the previous reviewer that it does have a really sharp note. Could it be musk? Overall really nice. Look for these early 1960's Avon perfume drams in the glass lipstick-tube shaped cylinders, especially if they are boxed, to get a really good idea of what made these bestsellers. The bottles of Rapture, Occur, and Unforgettable that I got in this line were really nice. Somewhere was also nice but I wasn't super crazy about it's piney notes (cedar and balsam).

And how stunning is that! This vintage bottle suits to a superb juice. I had in past two so similar to "Unforgettable", but muuuuch more expensive juices - vintage Miss Balmain and Jacques Fath's Ellipse. Both with super-strong personality, but I must tell you this fragrance is not far behind. Makes you feel polished, trimmed, chin up and go-ahead look. Mossy animalic leather, unapologetic at the start, as whole lot of 60-70-s formulas, "no-need for giggling" mode. But what happens next is a pure perfumery-magic - darkness dissolves and it is a dance of elegant cool florals, that live and act and breath together with you, yet soft leather touch at the base always remains with you, it is seriously beautiful complicated fragrance. Another Avon keeper to me, now I really determined to find out what else is hidden at the bottom-time of Avon line. P.S. Bought another 57 g cologne on next day, not in same bottle this time, yet for this heavenly drydown I might go for every single bottle I will see!

I acquired a late 1960s Avon demonstrator sample box, so I've been doing a deep-dive into old Avons of that era. What I have noticed is that a lot of the Avons in production during that time were quite derivative of other popular perfumes of the era, and were perhaps created as near smell-alikes. Unforgettable has a strong relation to Cabochard by Gres. After some "pretty" initial notes, both fragrances get down to business with a crack of the leather whip. The leather here is of the isobutyl quinoline type -- rough, almost gasoline-like in its potency. Lovers of this type of isobutyl quinoline leather fragrance -- in addition to Unforgettable and Cabochard -- should also try Bandit, Miss Balmain, Azuree, Cachet, Geminesse, Jolie Madame, and Aquarius by Max Factor.

More chypre- less skanky- than Occur, but similar. People voted that Occur is like Revlon Intimate, but this Unforgettable is more like Intimate. The first slam of Unforgettable is loud/Occur-like/leather/musky/chypre, but then the floral tames it way way down. Then you have a light floral leather skin musk. I prefer Occur and Intimate. Does not remind me of Cabochard. Cabo is leather and cigarettes IMO. OK- 1 hour later-- I get the Cabo comparison! Cabo mixed with Occur. This is very very nice!! But-- I find it a light skin scent. I did a drop/splash onto my wrist from an Eiffel Tower splash bottle. I intend to put this into a spray bottle and apply that way for use.

I found this in it's original box at a thrift store. It's strong, and I'm not sure it's exactly to my liking. I love a strong perfume, so I'll likely try it at some point. Just sniffing the sprayer though, I can tell it does have a strong leather note. It has that vintage perfume smell, in the style that was popular in that era. Reminds me of Estee Lauder Youth Dew, not that they smell alike, but both have that vintage smell to me.

My mother had the pink rubbery bottle in the early 70's. Just holding the bottle alone made you feel like a princess. Almost like a Fabergé creation. The perfume was long gone but back in those days you kept your Avon bottles as ornaments on your dressing table. The porcelain cat and bell. She still has the bell. They don't make such creations like that anymore. Unforgettable indeed...

I love it too. Classy, dressy. and I've several bottle in my store. A gal's Mom sold Avon from the late 50s to the early 70s. What treasures, Please bring the elegance and civility back with these fragrances.

I never even heard of this Avon fragrance But I Do LOVE The Bottle it looks like something from the Turn of the Century that was Released from the AVON Vault...I would get it JUST for That Bottle ALONE!
