Island White Sand

I love this fragrance SO much, but alas, it’s discontinued and now difficult to find for a not-ridiculous price. I’m not good at identifying specific notes but two things stand out to me. First, the coconut, which to me seems like a warm, “dry”, woody coconut (as opposed to sweet, sugary coconut notes in other beachy scents). Second, a noticeable, almost pungent, dry, “salty” scent. The other reviewer said she detected a driftwood note, so perhaps that’s what I’m getting. Together it creates a gorgeous, beachy coconut scent and the “salty” type note somehow gives the impression of a slightly sweaty, sandy, laying-out-in-the-sun body scent. To my nose, at least, this is a very natural-elements scent with nothing overtly synthetic. I’ve seen reviewers on a couple different websites say IWS is a dupe of Mugler’s Womanity, but those reviews are all a few years old. I’ve never smelled Womanity but since it, too was apparently discontinued (then re-released but as reformulation that is said to be noticeably different), instead of tracking down vintage Womanity I bought The Fragrance Shop’s version, which is meant to resemble the original. I do sense the similarity in [their interpretation of] Womanity and IWS. But for me, IWS is still by far my favorite. TFS’s Womanity is not close enough to serve as a replacement for Island White Sand. I desperately wish Bath and Body Works would bring this back, but it doesn’t look like that’s going to happen. I hope to see more reviews of this and hopefully we’ll start getting suggestions for good alternatives.

I had this and really liked it, but I gave it to my mother-in-law because she was here on vacation 2.5 years ago and we had some conversations about fragrances. It ended with me giving her a small box of items that I felt suited her, and this was one of them. This is so distinct and memorable though, I actually have a scent memory of it that is adequate enough to review this truthfully. I won't go beyond into details that I don't recall for the sake of honesty. There was a strange effect this had on us, it actually induces thirst. It sounds beyond odd, but the wateriness of the tart tangelo and coconut water was very realistic, and it sparked a craving for juicy drinks. When my MIL was visiting it was July, and the weather was dry. As it hung in the air, we felt as if we wanted to go and buy coconut water to sip on, it was weird. I rated those notes highly, because they're obvious. It's not the meat of the coconut you smell, it's definitely coconut *water*. It has a dry undertone though, which is juxtaposed perfectly against the very wet top notes. Driftwood is plentiful where I live, and it does indeed have a specific and special arid, light quality of scent. I didn't get any real sand, but again, it's dry. No florals either as far as I remember. This was a really neat, interesting little spray. The combo of wet and dry was a cool experience. I enjoyed it, and it think it's unique enough to stand out amongst the hoard of other B&BW fragrances. Definitely recommend if you can still get it! 🥥 🍊 ⛱️
