502 Iris Cartagena

I originally got this as a decant and thought it was meh. Then I found myself reaching for it more and more and more, especially as it got colder. To me, this is the romantic gourmand counterpart of the infamous “dusty,” incense-heavy cathedral perfumes loved by goth girls everywhere. As someone who is slightly edgy, but not quite subcultural, Iris Cartagena 504 happily tows the line between mainstream and experimental. It’s got one foot in vintage and antique, with a sturdy dry, powdery, papery base; and one foot in date night, with rum and cocoa adding aromatic sweetness, but never something that veers synthetic or sugary. I can see why Diptyque lovers like myself tend towards this house. You won’t be getting screechy synthetics or artificially “clean” citruses/powders and indole-bomb florals. It’s refined without being snobby, simple yet bold: a polished composition without secret corners. It does not evolve — it lingers, like an extrait ought to. I am not the kind of person who can drop $200+ on a perfume every day (high school teacher), but this one spoke to me very clearly after days-long flip-flopping between getting a bunch of never-before-smelled springy decants *or* springing for a full-size of this. It won out, despite it going out of season. That alone should tell you how hopelessly devoted I am to this fragrance. Do I think this is a safe blind buy? Absolutely not. Definitely try to get a decant before you commit; however, if you tend to like woody/powdery scents as much as I do, I’d say this as safe as long as you’re not hoping for sugar-sweet. And when I *am* feeling sugar-sweet, I lather myself in SDJ’s Bum Bum Cream (Salted Caramel Pistachio) and add a light spritz of Lattafa’s Eclaire Pistache (Dubai Chocolate) after dousing my pulse points in Iris Cartagena. It elevates any nutty, chocolaty gourmand to a status of undeniable maturity. The thought of this may be sacrilege to some, but it was my combo of choice around the holidays; and I wore it multiple times to many compliments! I genuinely could not rave about this fragrance any harder. An easy reach that will become even easier now that I’m not frantically conserving every last drop of an 8ml. So excited to get this package!

Sampling Bon Parfumeur – 502 Iris Cartagena, part of the house’s extrait line and a 2024 release that I first smelled at the brand’s introductory event at Perfumology a few days ago, though I’d previously ordered samples from Olfactif. It’s fittingly led by iris but mostly a gourmand, a blend of cacao, rum, vanilla, coffee, and woods, so the sharp yet buttery iris plays against the sweet, creamy, dark blend of gourmand elements, modulated by woods. It’s neither a full gourmand nor floral but something somewhere in between, classy and innovative. I’ve not quite smell an iris/gourmand crossover like this, even though the concept has been explored before by other houses, as I recall. The execution on the concept is very strong. 502 Iris Cartagena is extrait concentration and is priced at $220/70 for 100/15ml, sold in the US via the house website as well as great boutiques like Perfumology, Olfactif, and Ministry of Scent, to name a few. Overall, I find this pretty captivating and high-performing, and I find the 15ml option a great way to try out before buying a full 100ml, or to have a travel-friendly option available. I very much like when brands offer bottle sizes less than 50ml for more modest consumption, less investment, particularly if/when there are several fragrances in a catalogue that I like to try out some more or if I cannot pick a favorite. 8 out of 10

What can I say about this perfume? Well, I fell in love with it and I fall in love with it more and more every day that I use it. Despite its name, for me the iris is not the most important note in this incredible composition by Clement Marx. It has a very representative place, since it nuances the aroma giving it that powdery appearance that makes it unique, but the notes that stand out the most in 502 are coffee and cocoa. That combination of coffee and cocoa is truly exquisite, giving the fragrance a delicious gourmand touch. But iris Cartagena is not an excessively sweet gourmand since papyrus and Vetiver give it a green and earthy touch that makes it a tremendously versatile fragrance. This versatility makes it perfect for any time and occasion, since it is intense and elegant but at the same time it is not intrusive at all. When you shine the most for me it is on cool fall nights and winter days, although it is a great option for attending events or going out. It has good duration and projection.

Iris Cartagena was one of my many blind buys, and like a song that doesn’t immediately strike a chord but later becomes an obsession, it took some time to grow on me. But once it did, it completely captivated my senses and left an indelible mark on my soul. Among nearly 300 fragrances in my collection, this one stands out as truly unique, with an iris note that feels fresh, modern, and utterly captivating. I absolutely LOVE this one with a Captial L. It's sweet, spicy, with gourmand notes of cocoa, the iris is a true iris and completely complemented by the other notes. Similar to the opening of Dior Homme parfum, which I love but turns into an amber fragrance once the initial iris note dries down, this stays true to the opening notes and is a gourmand'ish iris, with notes of spice, IDK where from. Cacao, iris, rhum, coffee, vanilla, it's definitely a favorite of mine and FBW. Perfectly unisex IMO-doesn't lean one way or another. Best cacao+iris fragrance I've tried so far. I also love the name. Performance could be better but I don't care, if I like a scent, I'll just decant it and mind my business and refresh when needed.

I saw the notes and I knew I had to get my hands on it. Warm, comforting, dark, cozy, smooth are the words that come up when I try to describe this, heavy on the cocoa-iris-vanilla-woody notes. It kinda smells like my grandma, but in a good way – a cool young stylish grandma and her warm hug. To me this is a mature perfume for sure, definitely not for everyone and not a safe blind buy, but a really addictive, high quality perfume. I have the small 15ml bottle but I might get the bigger one for winter. Btw, they categorize it as gourmand on the official website, but to me it is not a gourmand at all (maybe apart from some "edible" notes), it is more complex than that.

There’s depth, yes — but no heaviness. It won’t be for everyone. Some might find it too soft, too sweet, or too subtle. this stuff 100% slaps, its to damn WILD I wore this at work today, thinking i was giving friendly and clean type of vibe and the amount of people that tried to smell me is ridiculous. Nevermind the serious eyes i got from several females.. Edit: I usually (nowadays) wear the clean sheets type of scents to work, and i forgot this is a gourmand, and thats probebly where the attention came from, everyone was hungry. If youre in the tourism business and you dont want to stand out but just smell clean, steering clear of this would be better.

I have both 502 and Cacao Porcelena and I would not say they are the similar at all. 502 is a strong gorgeous cacao mellowed by the iris (powder) scent with a deep and dark base. More suited for fall and winter. Amazing masterpiece of a scent. Cacao Porcelena is softer cacao and much more floral notes and no powdery notes. CP is perfect for warmer weather. Both are excellent for their season. 502 lasts longer for sure.

This scent has got me obsessed. I tried it on for the first time, walked around the city, got home and kept thinking about it. Went back the next day and got a bottle. It’s soft, ever-present without being loud and it’s so comforting. Starts off smelling like Gris Charnel Extrait by BDK and Meander by Amouage, but dries down to this dry, smoky brown sugar scent.

Sounds like it is a bit polarizing from some negative reviews here. I love it. Iris Cartagena is a plush iris-chocolate blend with a bright twist. The opening sparkles with rum and mandarin, but it’s really about the soft powdery iris melting into creamy cacao, vanilla, and a hint of sugarcane. Smooth, warm, and deliciously elegant.

This is absurdly good. My cold weather staple, my winter ride or die. At first spray that deep dark cocoa note combined with the papyrus and citrus comes across almost bitter, or ashy, somehow, but very quickly it settles into a smooth, cozy Iris-sandalwood-cocoa-vanilla gourmand. The more I wear it, the sweeter it smells to me.

First impression? Absolutely not. But then I thought about it. Obsessively. For days, it wouldn’t leave my mind. I tried it again. As the dark, powdery spiciness softened into a sparkling, crunchy sugar, I finally understood its charm. What a beautiful evolution this fragrance takes.

Personally I think if you enjoy Santal 33 and Leather by Malin & Goetz you will love this too. Although scent profiles differ there are similarities especially on opening, for me on my skin it's warm, woody and delicious. In dry down it mellows and is sweeter and the iris comes out.

Listen, I don't get excited about perfume much anymore cuz I'm pretty rigid in my tastes...BUT I got this partial in a swap and holy ghost this is sexy! Intriguing, sophisticated, delicious and sexy. My husband loves it and he isn't even into perfume. 10/10 so far.

502 Iris Cartagena smells like coffee and cacao on a chilly, cloud day with hints of dusty iris. This smells sophisticated and high quality. Unisex leaning slightly feminine. Excellent performance, especially given the extremely fair price point. Really very nice.

I want me, and everything around me, to smell like this fragrance. I have been hunting for my “perfect” iris scent. I think I’ve found it. I want it in made into a car freshener, a candle, a diffuser, shower gel and body lotion. Are you listening Bon Parfumeur!?!

A boozy dark chocolate with lightly fruity and aromatic facets. Perfectly unisex and just gourmand enough for my liking — lets the fragrant nature of the food and beverage do the talking rather than sugar and spice. Natural, comforting, and perfect for winter.

The driest and warmest wind has just spreaded a magic powder on you. That's the experience! The use can be very transversal: whether you need to hold on during a hard day at work or to feel confident on a romantic evening, spray It on, baby! Perfectly unisex.

Possibly my favourite fragrance of all time. The cocoa smooths out the iris into the woods beautifully. Ive had to stop wearing it as ive blown through half the bottle incredibly quickly. Will buy the edp so as not to use up the extrait. Soft and beautiful

Love at first sniff. I get very slight booze at the beginning and the cocoa is almost a bit more like cocoa butter. As with most of my iris perfumes, this one doesn't really project but it gives you a nice scent cloud for a while. Just ordered a bottle.

I am obsessed with this fragrance, amazing for the winter. On me this has a boozy, cocoa powdery dryness with something earthy and dusty. Love love this fragrance, wearing it almost daily at this point!

This is what jazz club should have been... Long lasting iris, tobacco, cacao masterpiece, It gets sweet yet powdery enough to make it a perfect close encounter fragrance. I'm really enjoying this

It’s a boozy, creamy and green papyrus. It’s a little bit powdery and a bit “dirty”. I think this kind of perfume is for training noses ... not a safe blind buy

This is how imagine an iris flower over smoldering woods. Sweet, smoky, and rough around the edges. Love it, but would not recommend a blind-buy.

Chocolate but not decadent iris and sandalwood combo. It’s good but not great or hall of fame iris. It’s a relaxed yet slightly sexually appealing unisex fragrance. It’s quite intimate. Makes you think. Is it better than DHI? Maybe. Definitely sample worthy. Although be advised the brand sample I got was a dab not a spray so that does affect ur perception of sillage etc. I would definitely try Jabal Cotton by Arabian Oud because thats just such a huge iris overdose with great if not epic performance. Iris Nazarena which is a hall of fame iris in terms of beauty. Also, if you could get a bottle of the now discontinued dior homme parfum in the 75ml format. Matiere Premiere’s Santal Austral Extrait could also give this a run for the money. Having said that I place Jabal Cotton ahead of this bcoz of the performance but I slightly prefer this. I also slightly prefer Iris Nazarena. I might prefer this just a tad over Santal Austral Extrait but again thats much more noticeable sillage wise. So I feel this is a sexy cozy stay at home scent.

Immediate seduction from the first spray: a slightly green, powdery iris with a salty nuance that reminds me of other elegant fragrances, each for different reasons. It brings to mind Iris Silver Mist by Lutens for its cold, almost mineral brightness, and Infusion d’Iris by Prada for its soft and clean coziness. Wearing it is a bit unsettling: there’s excitement in the comforting opening and frustration when the extra depth I expect never arrives. The evolution stays fairly linear and the sillage is discreet, and I would have liked the cocoa and coffee facets, though already present, to stand out more clearly to create a sharper contrast. In the end it’s an elegant, well-crafted fragrance, but it never recaptures the intensity of its first impression for me. Somehow it reminds me of BDK's Gris Charnel by BDK with its cacao woody character while remaining more powdery and "muted", whereas Acqua di Parma's Iris Nobile takes a brighter citrus and iris direction.

I am a gourmand girlie and this is not a gourmand in my opinion. Yes there are gourmand notes in it but it's not a true gourmand. First whiff is quite over powering and i cant single out the notes except booze. Dry booze. There's is an intense woody scent combined with a smokiness like that of an old ashtray - this is where I struggled but once you wait it out, you have a beautiful dry down which is lightly sweet and creamy with hints of cocoa powder. The woodyness still remains to some extent. It lasts quite long, I get around 9-10 hours even on skin. I didn't test this for longer than that since i come home from work and shower, but performance is good. If you want to make it sweeter layer it with something like Éclair or their 402. Just FYI I got it before it was released (not paid) Hope this helps.

I wanna say this is subtlety sexy because it’s also calming and dignified; that being said if I ever encountered someone wearing this in the wild I’d be following them around like a stalker and begging them to let me throw it back on them because this fragrance is ENTICING. It smells like someone who is cultured with excellent taste in art who could take care of you financially. It’s VERY similar in vibe to Diptyque’s Tam Dao, which is the heavy and more nighttime version on this. If you can pull off Tam Dao, Iris Cartagena is like the chill version you can wear while you go about running your errands. But objectively it’s still very intense.

Update: Power of speech finally returned : ) How would I describe Iris cartagena? - Deep moody iris and cacao notes to start. The rum is subtle but enhancing....Then the magic really happens when the papyrus and sandalwood join in... Very long lasting and a great scent bubble for this cruelty free, vegan perfume. A few hours a woody soft vanilla becomes more prominent. Distinctive, gorgeous and oomphy! A beautiful work of art, and without doubt a FB will be coming along soon!!

dark and brooding gourmand for when you want to feel goth but still cozy and sweet in the winter time. great longevity and sillage, great price point for an extrait, probably the best fragrance from this house.

Feeling uttery bewitched.... The most moorish iris and slightly boozy cocoa combination - not sweet and very sensual. Have found the scent I never knew I'd been looking for.... Lost for words...

the sweetness of this is very charming (indeed reminiscent of cane sugar) and I have only good things to say about longevity since two sprays lasted me the whole day (on skin!)

When it comes to hyped perfumes from Bon Parfumeur, Iris Cartagena is the one from this brand. Online, nobody speaks about the others from Les Extraits line, it’s just Iris Cartagena whenever someone is mentioning the brand... Well, I don’t get it! To me it’s cold iris, lots of papyrus, earthy papyrus, dusty cacao powder, bitter rum and very little vanilla, sugar, citrus or coffee. The opening is rather unpleasant, but as it dries down it gets slightly better, more smooth and less bitter. It never gets close to something like a sweet, creamy combo of iris/cocoa/vanilla, to me it’s more of a masculine, rough perfume. It’s strong and long lasting, so if you like it, it’s a great perfume. It’s an extrait that lasts like an extrait, not just titled “extrait de parfum”. For me it’s a pass, for someone else I can see it being a full love. I can objectively admit that it’s a good perfume, even though it’s not my cup of tea..

Iris Cartagena 502 is a warm and well-blended interpretation of iris, enriched with soft cocoa and a subtle sweetness that gives it a comforting, almost intimate character. The iris feels smooth and powdery, but never cold, supported by a gentle earthy depth. While it is pleasant and easy to wear, it does not leave a strong emotional impact. It is a good fragrance, balanced and respectable, but for me it remains in the middle ground—neither love nor dislike, simply acceptable.

Just got this in the mail and i'm honestly not crazy about it, I wish I could return it. It's way way more masculine than I was expecting, it smells kinda like Gris Charnel Extrait but worse so if you want a similar scent profile you should just buy that in my opinion

Chocolate and iris are at the forefront of this scent, which I like, but it leans masculine on me, which I don't. It's floral and powdery with gourmand touches, but not a gourmand. This isn't FBW for me as I lean towards sweeter scents.

This perfume opens up incredibly boozy, I can smell a realistic rum and a hint of iris, but the rum is too sharply alcoholic rather than warm. After a while it gets sort of overtaken by vanilla but it's mostly just the icky rum.

Iris Cartagena opens up very almondy/creamy/vanillic sweet. Dries down to a powdery, sweet, green/papyrus scent with a tiny hint of booze in the back. Not bad but nothing groundbreaking, and feminine leaning for sure.

Dark boozy cacao coffee with spicies. Chic but too bold for me.
