Aqva Pour Homme Marine

Today I'm heading over to the house of Bvlgari to take a look at a discontinued fragrance: Aqva Marine. Previously, I had the pleasure of reviewing another fragrance from the same line, Aqva Amara, and I was genuinely surprised by how much I appreciated its scent profile. Like Aqva Amara, Aqva Marine proved to be quite a challenge to procure. While it is currently available on platforms like eBay, it typically commands an exorbitant premium. I was not prepared to pay such a high price for it, but as luck would have it, I serendipitously came across a bottle on sale at a Perfumania that was a bit out of my way. Now let's get into it and see if Aqva Marine can pick up where Aqva Amara left off. Opening: The opening is a harmonious blend of aquatic freshness, lively citrus, and clean freshness. The primary notes I discern are water notes, grapefruit, seaweed, and neroli, with the water notes and grapefruit being the most prominent. True to its name, the fragrance commences with a powerful and refreshing blast of a fresh, oceanic accord. It is very reminiscent of the type of marine notes used in D&G's Light Blue Eau Intense, but somehow even more realistic, lending it a fresher and more invigorating sensation. Behind the aquatic accord comes the grapefruit, balancing out the briny tones with a substantial dose of juicy and slightly bitter citrus. Along with the water notes, grapefruit is also a dominant accord in Light Blue Eau Intense, so the two fragrances are easily comparable in this regard. Next is the seaweed and neroli. The seaweed helps to distinguish Aqva Marine from Light Blue Eau Intense by imparting a saltier, greener, and subtly ozonic quality, akin to the seaweed found in Bond No. 9's Wall Street, but without the metallic, screechy harshness. Lastly, the neroli gives the opening a soft, floral aspect while lending a gentle sweetness; similar in tone to the neroli found in Tom Ford's Neroli Portofino, but far less bold and abrasive. Dry Down: The dry down settles into a composition that is still predominantly aquatic and citrusy, but with a new, ambery depth. The primary notes I perceive are water notes, mandarin orange, cedar, and amber, with the water notes and mandarin orange being the most compelling. Maintaining the close connection to its namesake, the water notes continue to be the highlight of the fragrance in the dry down with the same aquatic and oceanic tone, but in a more subdued and rounded manner compared to the initial potent blast. Trailing closely behind is the mandarin orange, which has swapped places with the grapefruit to provide an analogous citrus accord, but one that is noticeably juicier, fruitier, and sweeter. This is followed by the cedar and amber. The cedar emerges in the dry down to provide a dry, masculine woodiness, which serves as a sturdy backdrop for the marine and orange notes. Lastly, the amber manifests in the background as a subtle yet rich balsamic accord, adding depth to an otherwise bright and fresh fragrance. Performance: The initial projection is robust, reaching out approximately six feet. Sillage mirrors that potency with an easily discernible scent trail. After a few hours, the projection and sillage remained largely unchanged. At the seven-hour mark, the projection had diminished considerably to about three feet, and the scent trail was lighter, but still noticeable without much effort. The fragrance became a skin scent shortly thereafter. When to Wear: As the name implies, Aqva Marine is unequivocally a spring/summer fragrance best suited for daytime wear. This is a casual fragrance at its core, and it works perfectly for outdoor activities, informal gatherings, or as a gym scent. However, I would not select it for special/formal occasions or for the office. Blind Buy: If you appreciate a heavy-handed aquatic fragrance like Light Blue Eau Intense, Aqva Marine would be a safe blind buy for you. Final Verdict: From the moment I sprayed this on, I knew it was going to be something that resonated with me. While I typically gravitate toward more substantial, rich, fall/winter fragrances, I have a deep appreciation for highly aquatic and fresh scents, and Aqva Marine certainly fits that description. From opening to dry down, the water notes remain the highlight, giving the fragrance that cherished oceanic quality. There is also a notable evolution to the fragrance, with grapefruit and neroli leading the way in the opening, then transitioning into rich and woody nuances with cedar and amber in the dry down. The performance was also very respectable for such a fresh fragrance, and it lasted just long enough to get through a full workday. All things considered, I believe Aqva Marine is an excellent spring/summer fragrance that stands out in its category and can easily compete with heavy hitters like Light Blue Eau Intense. Needless to say, I am very glad to have this in my collection. I would not recommend spending the extortionate amount that people are asking for it on eBay, but if you can manage to find it for a reasonable price, do yourself a favor and pick it up. Alright people, today we’re talking about a scent that basically smells like someone bottled the ocean and put a luxury brand label on it. This fragrance is one of those classic aquatic summer scents that tries very hard to make you feel like you’re on vacation.  But does it actually smell like the ocean... or like someone dropped citrus into a fish tank? Let’s find out. First Spray (aka “Did someone just splash seawater on me?”) Right off the top you get a blast of grapefruit, mandarin orange, neroli and petitgrain.  It’s bright, fresh, slightly bitter citrus. But very quickly the real star shows up: seaweed. Yes. Actual salty marine seaweed vibes. Imagine standing on a beach where: waves are crashing salty air is blowing and someone nearby just cut open a grapefruit That’s basically the opening. It’s refreshing... but also very ocean-realistic, which means some people love it and others go: “Why do I smell like I wrestled a sea turtle?” After about 15–20 minutes the fragrance settles into the heart: rosemary marine water notes seaweed accord  This is where the scent really earns its name. The marine note here feels salty, watery, and slightly green, almost like standing on a pier with ocean spray in the air.  Some fragrance fans describe it as: “ocean, sunscreen and slight seaweed.”  It’s very atmospheric. Not tropical beach cocktail vibes. More like European seaside vacation. Think: linen shirt, sunglasses, overpriced espresso. A few hours later things calm down into the base: amber cedarwood  This part is clean, slightly woody, and mineral-like. The salty marine note sticks around while the woods give it structure, kind of like sun-warmed driftwood on a beach.  It’s simple, but pleasant. Nothing overly complex — just a clean aquatic vibe. Performance (fresh fragrance physics) Let’s be real. Fresh aquatic fragrances almost never perform like monsters. Typical performance for this one: Longevity: about 4–6 hours  Projection: moderate for about 1–2 hours  Sillage: light refreshing trail  One Reddit user described it perfectly: “Projects for an hour or two, lasts about five hours.”  So yeah... it’s not a beast. But honestly fresh marine fragrances aren’t supposed to be nuclear. You want ocean breeze, not chemical warfare. When to Wear It This fragrance shines in situations like: beach days hot summer weather casual daytime gym or sports It’s especially good in high heat, where heavier fragrances would feel suffocating.  Wearing this in winter feels a bit like bringing flip-flops to a snowstorm. Technically possible... but questionable. Compliment Factor This scent usually gets positive reactions because it smells clean and refreshing.  But it’s not a loud compliment magnet. It’s more like: “Hey, you smell fresh.” Not: “WHAT IS THAT AMAZING SCENT???” Still, for summer it works perfectly. Final Thoughts Bvlgari Aqva Pour Homme Marine is basically the fragrance version of a beach vacation. Fresh citrus. Salty ocean air. Driftwood drying in the sun. It’s not the loudest or most complex fragrance out there. But on a hot summer day? It smells like someone bottled the Mediterranean. Rating: ⭐ 8 / 10

My first bottle of Aqva Marine, purchased around 2010 or so, met an untimely end after falling on the floor - but I liked it so much that I recently repurchased it. If you like salty marine scents, you can't go wrong with this one - there's a heavy dose of both marine and salty notes here; the sparkling, slightly sour grapefruit opening links so nicely with the calone, rounding its edges (below talkaboutscents rightly mentioned what calone in heavy concentration does to a formulation) and rendering it more like a watermelon/cucumber accord rather than the dreadful white egg note. Aqva Marine is refreshing like splashing your body with sea water during a hot day before going to the beach club and get some icy sour yet fruity drink to cool off, while spreading some sunscreen on your body which mixes with the sea salt on your skin; it offers an underlying playful tone compared to its darker, greener sibling Aqva pour Homme that started the line. In that sense, it is to me pretty much unisex and suitable for more informal situation (although I've worn it multiple time to the office and no one really got offended :D). Compared to my old bottle, this juice is less potent and lasts (and projects) somewhat less, although the scent profile is basically unchanged, though maybe this has a tad less cocumber feeling to it and is more citrus-forward. The powderiness that I remember from the original remains, again less pronounced, in the current formulation. The base, same for both, is a bit a monodimensional fuzzy wood drydown very much common in modern perfumery, and that is the least appealing part of this fragrance, but once you reach that point it is already time to reapply or take a shower before bed time. The pebble/drop bottle design to me is a masterpiece, batch code is 30I70H1 from July 2018. Longevity of the current batches is not great (5 hours give it or take it), projection is intimate, so overspraying a bit is suggested. Love was, love remains!

One of the best summer scents I have ever sampled. It really nails the light citrus seaweed notes of the original,but it turns up the sweetness and the seaweed note is a little subtle. To my nose it smells closer to Versace Pour Homme than Aqva Pour Homme,but its still fantastic. What really disappointed me with Versace Pour Homme (and any other Versace Frag for that matter) is that performance was terrible. In about 3 hours it was all gone,not even a skin scent. So In my opinion if you liked Versace Pour Homme,but have an issue with the performance give this a try Out of all the Flankers I think I like this and Atlantique the best with Amara being third. Atlantique performs way better (About 12 hours plus),but this one is very good as well (9-10 hours). I think that Atlantique really amps up the sea notes and the touch of amber. I love it,but it can be a little off putting to some people. This one has a more mass appealing scent so keep that in mind. With Atlantique I would recommend you get a sample or decant first,but this one is an ok blind buy since the notes are a little more balanced. Also I find that Amara is a slightly less sweeter version of Aqva Marine with a similar performance to Atlantique as I also got about 12 hours plus out of that one. The performance on the whole Bvlgari Aqua line has been fantastic and considering they are alll fresh aquatics the 8 hour plus performance in each fragrance is shocking. Word of caution don't overpay for any of them. 40-50 bucks for a 1.7ml is the tops you should pay for any of the Bvlgari Aqva line Now that my bottle of Atlantique has ran out Ill get a bottle of Marine or even Amara (if I can find it and at a reasonable price). As with every fragrance, this is a subjective review. This is by far the best aquatic fragrance I've tried. It is a true aquatic that actually smells like the ocean in a bottle, so it may not be for everyone. 9.5/10 The seaweed note adds that authenticity with a slight bit of saltiness, but nothing too overpowering (again, for me), the neroli and grapefruit add to the overall juiciness and freshness and are blended smoothly into the mix, and the woody amber base is there but not that prominent, which I think is what makes this so much more appealing as an aquatic/marine scent. It's slightly sweet, slightly salty, and very watery (in a good way), while also being cool, fresh, and juicy. Basically smells like what you'd imagine jumping into a pool or a deep body of water on a hot day would feel like, simultaneously. Longevity is good, around 6-8 hrs, with a moderate-to-personal sillage with around 3-4 sprays at the neck. Maintains the opening oceanic note throughout, though it gets a bit saltier on the drydown. Perfect for spring to warmer weather, and suited to a day out in the sun. Works well at night too, if the setting and vibe are appropriate. Office safe too. Not blind-buy safe, would suggest trying on skin to be sure. I started with a 1ml tester, loved it, and bought the 100ml bottle. Acqua Di Gio lines are not similar at all to this, this is much deeper and oceanic than them. Recommended for someone who truly loves that oceanic smell.
