Sellier

I really find Sellier both addictive and soothing and it is a fragrance I have come to realise I reach for quite often. I do however understand that the sort of regular crowd that are interested in some of the notes presented here like leather, tobacco and oak moss usually wants something with a lot more oumph and projection and boldness. Which in a way perhaps also its name sort of suggests as Sellier in French means saddler a k a someone making saddles for horses. What Sellier however delivers is a smooth, soft calming skin scent which picks some of its background from the environment that may surround a saddlers den like a bit of hey, some dust, quite a bit of smoky ness especially in the beginning like from an open fire. But not one in a luxurious ski cabin where rich people drink Indian chai or roast marshmallows after a day in the slopes. But rather a fire used for light and to keep warm in a non-isolated saddlers den or shop where at best you can find a nice kettle of a tea freshly brewed nearby. And where piles of leather soon to become parts of a saddle lies on the shelves in the back and there are some piles of hay resting by the wall next to a door leading the way to a stable. But where you are too far away to be able to smell the horses. After a while the scent begin to develop more warmth and the smoky ness subsides and can after a while not even be detected more than as a distant memory. Instead you more now feel the woods the birch and to me also light sandal wood and the hay like scent from the orris root mixing with the softest feel of an almost sweet smelling comforting cashmeran and the softest leather creating a naked skin like sensation together with the warmth of unsweetened tea. The longer it sits on your skin the more it will become enmeshed with your own skin scents and on me it sweetens it up ever so slightly and give it also an airy etherial quality. All in all this is a very intimate skin scent. Not meant to offer any bold statements but rather create calmness and comfort in a world filled with stress and extreme needs. It is totally unisex but is obviously more soft than bold. It does in some ways remind a bit of Le Labo Santal 33. But differs quite a bit from that too. Sellier does more paint a woody picture from a time before we had electricity and central heating, whereas Santal 33 reminds me more of a newly renovated kitchen with old looking but brand new wooden floors where one has also lit up a scented candle that gives off whiffs of a fireplace. Santal 33 is a lot more modern hipster whereas Sellier is more connected to history for real, if that makes sense... Santal 33 is also a lot more linear where Sellier is a lot more changeable and developing throughout the weartime and changes in my opinion also more individually depending on your own skin scent. But you can detect something that reminds of iris in both of them even though it is only a listed note in Santal 33. Santal 33 is to me a more recognisable scent too whereas Sellier in its intimacy and change ability feels more unique. This is as I think you get from the description not a strong projector. But an intimate skin scent with a scent bubble that whispers draw near me. The longevity is however fairly good and on me this lasts throughout the day or throughout the evening but will not linger on until morning, or perhaps like a tiny flickr of yesterdays memory. Or by its effect on calming my senses. Over the last six months since I blind bought this it has become one of my favourite scents to wear daily. And works perfectly also in settings where fragrance sensitive people abide... I would not say this is a safe blind buy though! Especially not if you are after strong leather, tobacco and woody projection. And also not if you interpret intimate as being feminine. As this is for sure a unisex kind of scent. So try before buy! To me it is however perfect for fall and winter and perhaps even for spring. I have not yet tried it in full blown summer. But for summer I would probably rather go for the now discontinued Byredo unnamed one which does share a frame work that reminds me a bit of some of the note composition in Sellier but with a mild fruity ness on top... ❣️

I had been looking for a perfume that would make me feel like Sherlock Holmes for over a year. I wanted an olfactory reminder that, whenever I felt overwhelmed by real life, I could seek shelter in the cozy and familiar hearth of 221B Baker Street, with the care and intimacy of John Watson, the leather armchairs, the smell of wood, old books, and dewey upholstery, with the company of a cigarette and some tea. I used a dupe of Tom Ford’s Ombre Leather for a few months. It gave off the vibe of Sherlock as played by Benedict Cumberbatch in the BBC series. In my mind it is connected to my first trip to Boston, to the swishing of a long black coat as I walked under the tall glass scyscrapers, feeling small yet all-containing. And yet I still craved for more comfort, to be contained myself. When I was a teenager, long before J.K. Rowling’s transphobic delirium, I used to write fanfiction about evening in 12 Grimmauld Place. It was my place of comfort. I identified with the character of Tonks - punk, in constant metamorphosis, undoubtedly genderfluid - and I was in love with Remus Lupin, the shaggy and quiet werewolf-professor. I wanted to hang out with Sirius Black, dark and mysterious, apart from when he was cracking jokes to his friends. Wearing a ratty old tweed jacket, drinking hot chocolate with a hint of firewhiskey, smoking from a pipe, snuggled up in an armchair that smelt of wood and damp leather. Those damned imaginary hedonists! Sellier reminds me of both places: 221B Baker Street and 12 Grimmauld Place. It smells like dark academia, like Allen Ginsberg, a cozy kind of debauchery.

I’ve been searching for a leather fragrance that fits my personal sensibilities for so long and I just wasn’t having any luck. All the more popular leather fragrances have an annoying sweet fruity note competing with the leather such as Tom Fords ‘Tuscan Leather’ or Ombré Leather, or even PDM’s Godolphin. Or they smell drab and muddled like band aids like in Gucci Guilty Absolute. I found Sellier by accident while death scrolling through TikTok and I couldn’t be happier. I ordered a sample and after smelling it, I IMMEDIATELY ordered a full bottle, full retail from Byredo’s website. It’s a more smoother leather dominant Santal 33 in the opening and develops into a slightly smoky semi sweet leather in the mid. Very beautiful and pleasant ❤️ The drydown is my favorite though. It settles into a masculine , salty & musky, herbal semi sweet leather that is sooo smooth and refined. Its sexy and sophisticated and I can’t get enough. It is unisex but definitely leans more masculine IMO. It’s long lasting (6 to 8 hours) but doesn’t project much, true to the byredo style, but shines in the sillage. This is signature scent worthy for sure. It has a mass appealing quality and is extremely wearable and inoffensive but still very luxurious, high quality and unique. I’m head over heels in love with this fragrance!

This perfume is a true masterpiece! I tried a lot of Byredo fragrances in the Paris store, looking for something new. When this fragrance was first introduced as a leather fragrance, I was quite sceptic at first, as I am not usually a big fan of heavy leather, smokey or tobacco scents. But when I smelled this, I immediately liked it. It is warm, classy and manly, without being too heavy. It is easy to like this scent, and I think that is, because it reminds me of Le Labo Santal 33, but a much more masculine version of it (although I have to say this really is a fragrance on it's own, but if you would compare it to any other fragrance: this is the best comparison, as I do get some sandalwood vibes). The ingredients are of high quality, and 2-3 sprays are really enough to last a day. This perfume is at a high price point, but the thing is: I am not really into sandalwood nor leather, but somehow this fragrance has a great appeal, and is really sexy. It made me by a bottle, and because of it's uniqueness I'm happy with it every day!

This might be my favorite fragrance of all time, at the very least top 3. I wish it was something I could wear all day every day. I dislike Santal 33 but clearly I adore Sellier, I wouldn't compare them at all. This comes on strong and smoky at first and has the best drydown, leathery and almost a little sweet, if you have/enjoy Byredo fragrances it just has that Byredo DNA where it lingers in the air and creates a scent bubble with a type of warmth/humidity to it. Amazing projection and longevity, but it's such a strong scent that I've reserved it for going out at night. I wish they made this into a candle because sometimes I use it as a room spray lol. To me, this is a very sensual and alluring scent. If you like smoke, spice, leather, wood, ugh its a 10/10. Can't overstate how much I love this fragrance. There's no pickle, no sourness like I found in Santal 33. It's so expensive though :( the only drawback

It’s like santal 33.. so I whore my santal 33 yesterday in the store where I bought de los santos and vetiver geranium.. I gifted this sample as the saleswoman really loved santal on me. So I took it and tested out today... but damnnnnn this is another level to be honest. All the sharp edges on santal are gone, and more round. The leather here is also much more prominent and makes a clear character. It’s a more sexy version of santal! The performance tough is different. 6/8 hours max.. Sillage is fine and projection is good for 2 hours. Santal on me lasts for at least 24 hours on my skin. Not that I care that much about performance but for those who wanted a comparison and decide which one they should blind buy. This one: more sexy version Santal: sharper and louder and bit more cloudy/sandalwood

Oof is this good! I don't know if I want to wear this scent or if I want to date someone who wears this. It begins with rich smokey leather, and quicky smooths into something silkier and sweeter. The sweetness is slight and consequential rather than intentional, I think from the birch and tobacco. If you generally don't like leather fragrances, this one might be for you - the leather is extremely well balanced and supported by woodiness. This would be a great one to douse a scarf in and catch sniffs from all day - as another comment mentioned, it's both soothing and addictive. I need this, I want to swim in this, I would buy 100ml if it existed. Edit to say: this is nothing like Santal 33 to my nose. Sellier is smooth liquid silk, Santal is scratchy wood chips.

Oh, I fell in love, this one is sooo soo good! I'm quite suprised to read the other reviews honesly. To me it's a warm, well rounded tobacco, woody scent. I don't get the tea too much. It's pretty dry, there's a certain sweetness but it's very subtle. I don't find it masculine leaning at all, actually very well balanced and smooth, perfectly suitable for both men and women. I read comments that say it becomes quickly a skin scent... I'm confused, I just did one spray on my wrist and I kept on smelling it the whole evening. Plus, after one week, I wore the same coat again and I immediately got a whiff of this lovely fragrance. Smooth and comforting would be the perfect words to summarize it to me. (Mind you I don't like Santal 33 but love this one..)

I've really taken my time to gather my thoughts before speaking about this fragrance. First and foremost, it's the most beautiful scent I own. I would describe it as having two blocks of colour, almost like a Rothko painting. It has a darker depth through its base notes of leather and tobacco leaf, while above that float the bright, delicate, airy notes of birch and black tea. To me, this is an incredibly artistic, beautiful, and unique fragrance. It is my fragrance for special occasions, when I want to feel magical and magnetic. It's simply incredible! 11/10.

This, along with Narcisso's Poudree (yes, these are my two genders) has to be my favorite fragrance of all times. I sprayed it on a piece of paper that magnetized me the moment it fell out from my pocket. Smells like leather, smoke, expensive sweaters, vintage upholstery, like I imagine Grimmauld Place or 221B Baker Street would smell. This is THE dark academia fragrance, much more masculine than it is unisex. Reminds me of a light blue jumper combined with a brown tweed jacket.

I love this. First spray smelled like a leather shop and it dries down so nicely. The tea makes it slightly sweet as it dries. Def more masculine. I guess they are comparable at first sniff. But Santal 33 is much more sour and less detailed IMO. This one has a lot more going on. Sophisticated for lack of better word. Ideal for special occasions/dates/or a night out. Longevity and projection was pretty good when compared to their other products. I guess I am a leather fan! 9/10

It's mind boggling to me that Byredo don't list sandalwood as a note because all I can think is: This is Santal 33's tougher older sister who wears leather and smokes cigarettes, but in the most sophisticated sense; she also wears good cashmere. This lacks the sharpness (pickle juice quality) of Santal but retains all the qualities that make it so addictive on such a ubiquitous level. This one is cosy and more refined. Lovely as it is, I'm not sure I could justify the price.

What a great fragrance, it's quite similar to Santal 33, so I automatically love it. Sellier is less creamy and more leathery than Santal 33 and it's very long lasting but the price is very high for only 50ml! I bet they smell quite identical in the air, so if you have one, I wouldn't get the other. EDIT: I got a partial bottle to try it out. Really enjoying it but I agree with my previous statement that it's quite similar to Santal33, especially in the dry down.

This fragrance is the general DNA of Santal 33 except the "sandalwood" note smells like wood now instead of pickles. Sure there are other changes, but it's that first change which makes it amazing instead of disgusting. But it's kinda expensive ($5/ml), so check out Alexandria's Hafez in Milan ($1.20/ml). Sadly, Fragrantica doesn't have many of Alexandria's more recent dupes listed and Alexandria isn't pointing out clearly that HiM is a dupe of this.

As a Santal 33 hater, surprisingly I deeply enjoy this fragrance. It has just enough of the pickle and smoke removed plus a smoother leathery touch that I find it to be much more wearable. I find this to be a slightly edgy unisex fragrance on its own, but it is also so base note-y that it layers reeeeeally nicely with florals and citruses while staying unisex. I dare you to try this with Byredo Young Rose, Bal d’ Afrique or Le Labo Bergamote 22! 😍

I'm completely obsessed with this scent!! It is warm, deep, a bit spicy and masculine; so comforting. Delicious on the skin, very natural and not too heady. I'd describe it like a hunt in the forest ; sweat, undergrowths, horse breath, game bird, then heading back to the old manor house to drink liquor - very expensive. It is so refined. I'd recommend it for people who have a sensitive nose. Perfect as an everyday chic and sexy fragrance.

If you look at the description you might think this is a winter fragrance, but if you look at the notes, they are oak moss, birch, cashmerean, green tobacco leaf and black tea. All these notes are great notes in a summer fragrance. I wear sellier in the summer when its warm and it is actually amazing, smells dry and fresh with a hint of leather, not cloying at all.

This is Rodeo in a new bottle. The opening is more on the black tea smoky side but the dry down is definitely Rodeo and beautiful. They describe it as extract which is supposed to be more long lasting but I think the price is a little exaggerated. Rodeo is one of my favourite fragrances which is usually not found in stores. Get that one instead if you can find it!

The most beautiful leather fragrance I have ever smelled. Smooth, long-lasting but not overpowering, and beautifully blended. I am most definitely not a fan of leather fragrances yet I can't stop smelling my arm when I spray this. Perfectly unisex. I smelled this pre-pandemic when it was launched and it was love at first sniff...so glad to finally have a bottle.

They say Santal 33, but I'm not entirely sure I get that. What I do sense is a gentle blend of leather, birch, and resins, a hint of tea leaves and a whisper of smokey papyrus circulating in the background. Very smooth and sophisticated. It’s pricey, yeah, but I truly appreciate the elegant and nuanced nature of this fragrance. To me, the best Byredo.

This makes me excited to chop my hair into a short pixie, wear oversized and eclectic clothing, rock dark lipstick, and live life as the bada** I am. It turns barely sweet on my skin (which I love) and makes me think of a storeowner tidying the displays of her consignment shop. Three words: approachable, rustic, and free-spirited.

A more balanced and delicate rendition of Russian Leather by Molton Brown. If you love the tea and leather combo in Russian Leather, you’ll definitely enjoy this one. MB is smokier and woodier, but the tea note in Sellier lingers throughout the entire life of the scent along with a soft cashmere base and violet leaf.

I realy liked this one, even my wife likes it, and normaly she does not like leather scents. Sellier is not smoky or fruity. Just dry fresh clean leather. This scent is actually a great summer scent, since there is green tobacco leaf, birch and cashmere in it. It smells increadible fresh even in the summer.

This is a review by a horse girl, for horse girls. This smells like when you walk into a tack shop, or if you stuck your nose in a new Ariat boot. The price is a bit high for what it is, but Byredo really captured that leather smell. I don't see how this is similar to Santal 33 at all.

When I wear this.. I am better than you. My confidence reaches new levels and I become the King of the Assholes. Im down to my last 10 sprays from the bottle :( Dont know if I can convince myself to buy another bottle for the price... There are so many other exotic scents out there...

I can’t stop smelling myself. I usually wear ombré leather by Tom ford....this feels like a mega upgrade. It’s rich, warm, and on me, a hint of sweet from the black tea. I personally think this is a scent that can be used day to day or for fancy occasions. Couldn’t be happier

Indeed, the dry down is very very much like Santal 33, but the opening is such a beautiful leather and the rest is just a wonderful copy of Santal 33 with quality materials and it lasts a long time (even though it gets weak fast). The price is just ridiculous though.

Got more compliments wearing a sample of this than anything I've ever worn. I recommend spraying it on clothes/jacket. I see it's pretty unpopular among fragheads, but there's no denying its insane mass appeal. Normies will go nuts over you.

A dark and deep wonderful fragrance that is slightly sweet. I love this! :) I think it's really masculine. I'm not usually a fan of leathery scents, but this is an exception. It has a longevity of 10+ hours and has a medium sillage.

I do love it. I see the resemblance to Santal 33, only this is more leathery and smoky. However, it's way overpriced for what it is. If it were $200 cheaper, I'd buy it!

This is really really good. Too bad it’s ridiculously priced, it has mainstream appeal. So they should make a clone of this like Armaf did Creed.

even if it's not in the notes, I smell A LOT of violets, like violetes du tzar from oriza L legrand

Applies smoky cast iron by way of dry grassy vetiver. A car garage waiting room that's not unpleasant, but definitely fresh tires. Smokiness gives edge, combining with amber to bring sweet tobacco - which works with the vibe. Not too dry...dusty desert Moroccan bazar spices. Would be interesting to compare against Tauer's "Au Coeur du Désert" The way faint honey slowly rounds things out drags your nose back. Gentle sweetness turns it into oiled supple leather/saddle. The shoe polish comparison is accurate, but doesn't feel like a negative. Skin vs. clothes is drastically different. It warms and softens on skin while clothes is screechy medicinal herbal - love to see how the clothing spray settles over time. Overall, mysterious and likable enough I don't regret trying. It's fun to dig your nose in (my hound dog thought the same). Just not bottle worthy. 1ST REVIEW: Opens smokey, stained wood and deep/rich leather with vinyl plastic edge. Takes 15 mins to calm and creaminess build. Dewy, fresh floral floats at a distance while up close is smokey powder/soap. Sharp contrast between sweet tobacco leaf and earthy oakmoss. Airy projection of soothing garden without being generic. Good unisex floral. Never experienced such a striking difference between up close skin scent vs. projected notes at a distance - pure magic! Finishes with warm birch.

I think the reviews are a bit harsh. For the price, this is absolutely not worth it. But the scent generally is very beautiful. I'm not familiar with too many leather fragrances, but this is just so lovely. Very unisex, leaning slightly masculine (only because of the leather vibe, it has no "cologne" type scent), but I've been wearing this for a couple of days and it is just beautiful. It's creamy in a furry way, so cashmeran is definitely the most prominent note. It carries the oakmoss and some background leather beautifully, very well-blended. I can't tell if the "smokiness" is from the tobacco, or if it's the leather-cashmeran mixture giving off that vibe. Either way, this is a lovely fragrance. It gives me the image of going back to the warm cabin from a day of horse riding, leather boots still on and whips still in hand. It's a chilly, snowy day. The fireplace is lit, and there's a man smoking a cigar standing by it. You grab the nearest cashmere blanket and lay your head on it. And the bottle's pretty.

Okay, I’m sorry but I need to throw my hat into the ring and say that Sellier and Santal 33 are not dupes. In my opinion, Sellier is a straight up LEATHER fragrance... to me it is very linear leather and animalic... Santal 33 is very much a sandalwood/papyrus/leather/cedar fragrance that is more complex. I am in the camp of people that still give Santal 33 it’s flowers... it smells beautiful on me... that being said, I don’t think I particularly care for Sellier on my body... it really smells like a new raw leather jacket - which is sexy, but it’s not my personal vibe. I can see someone in a leather community, bikers or S&M, really soaking this fragrance up. It’s very strong to start but it mellows out with some wear. This is a date night scent... it’s heavy. I personally see this as a masculine scent, but I’m sure that anyone who loves a bold leather scent will adore it. It smells expensive, which is good because it is expensive.

It's far from Santal 33 and Sandalwood note. There is some sourness that might be slightly reminiscent of the pickle note in Santal 33. But I associate this sourness more with a smell of a cork of a wine bottle that has gone bad; or oak barrels emptied from wine. It is mixed with something sweet that distantly reminds me other Byredo perfumes with Plum or Fig. There is something pleasantly sweet in the projection. When it comes to Leather I am not a fan: it's a mix of modern Amber (that smells like Amber, Musk, wood / Oud and Patchouli at the same time) and Styrax / Leather. It smells more like a leather shop where leather is chemically treated. The projection has mysterious sweetness while the blotter smells like a saddler (=Sellier in French). This is exquisite. It's like being in a mahogany filled library in an historic mansion from the 1920s. You're sitting on a deep, tufted leather couch that probably costs more than your car. Next to you sits is a cigar box that used to carry cigars from Cuba during prohibition, but now is just there for ambiance. The smell is refined and subdued. The scent is primarily carried by rich and woody resinous notes with soft leather and sweet tobacco overtones that floats in and out while an earthy incense that reminds you of your favorite old world tea house brings it home. I find it to be masterful, though restrained.

Funny thing that the first note I got from smelling directly from the bottle without spraying was ginger. Didn’t get any ginger after spraying though. Main note I got is leather and then something sourish sweet. Not my type at all. And be warned, this and all other night veils perfumes stains. 06 Mar 2023 edit. Certainly smells better after sitting so many months on the shelf. Definitely has sandalwood vibe since this smells like Santal33 and Autumn Vibe. Like this quite a bit more. Lasted over two days on clothing.

Luckily I only paid £100 for a brand new 50ML bottle after really enjoying the "inspired impression" I bought off KDJ. Yes, it's a lovely scent, I find it very woodsy with a nice background of leather and a smokey, tea. I can see why it comes across as a Santal 33 clone to others, but Sellier has a real warmth and comforting depth to it. It's totally unisex, lasts a good 8+ hours and has a fairly decent sillage that makes it an interesting scent but nothing unique. Would I have paid £250 for a bottle.....no

My skin treats Byredo like water so for it to make an impression says something. Decent silage. I also got 6 hours of wear which is 2-3x longer than normal for me from this house. Very pure saddle or untreated purse leather. Clean. I don’t get much else except hints of cigarette smoke and sandlewood from opening to dry down. It is lovely and sophisticated and classy. My favorite Byredo so far but, to me, there are others who do this style as well with better performance (at least on my skin).

I purchased this because I LOVEEEE Santal 33 but can’t stand the pickle note on me. This does smell very similar to Santal 33 but with poorer performance and minus the dreaded pickle note. It would be perfect if it lasted & projected more. It starts off with a soft creamy powdery woody scent. I can detect a slight leather note but no boozy notes. It’s simply a comfort scent meant to wrap around you like your favorite cashmere blanket.

Really lovely smoky woody leather scent. To me it’s very similar to santal 33 but smokier. Not super long lasting, I feel like I got a good 3 hours of wear but it started fading quicker than I expected. Not worth the price for me as I feel like these are pretty common notes and you can get many similar scents for much less. However it’s still gorgeous and I will cherish my sample.

I got this as a gift because I loved it on my best friend so much and while I do love this, I don't think I would repurchase for myself. I love a good leather note but this unfortunately does smell like a fancier santal 33 to me as other people have commented. its a perfect scent to wear out in the wintertime so it doesn't get a lot of use for me here in Los Angeles.

A modern woody chypre with slight leathery hues. The scent opens with notes of tea and cashmeran wood. The heart is tobacco and a leather accord. The perfume settles on a mossy base of oakmoss and birch. The minimal expertly constructed scent leans masculine and has moderate to strong sillage and good longevity. Nice but a bit overpriced for what it offers. Enjoy!

I would not call this a copy of S-33, but I understand the comparison. Wonderful, deep, rich leather scent with some woods and smoke. The one critique I have to, unfortunately, agree with is the price tag. While I find the entire Byredo line overpriced, the price tag on this one is jaw-dropping.

this is an absolute monster if we talking preformance. its one of the few id describe as "potent." it sits on skin and projects at a consistent range for a very long time. as for the scent itself, its nothing like ive ever smelled before. its different. and i like different.

I have never smelled Santal 33, but if it does smell like Sellier, I'd like to try it too. Sellier to me smells like strong black tea with old worn out leather bag whose owner was a smoker. Very different from the profiles I typically gravitate to, but I like this a lot.

This is a nice one. You would think this is a dark fragrance based on the notes but honestly to me this scent has cheerful vibes. Something about it is very uplifting. Smelling this brings a smile to my face. Not sure why but I like this. Drydown is all happy leather.
