Tobacco Mandarin

I was fortunate enough to get a preview sniff today in Harrods, ahead of its imminent release. I’d been testing all day and I can’t deny that I was suffering somewhat from olfactory fatigue if I’m perfectly honest but when I got my nose on this one, I definitely perked up. There are lots of heavy-hitting notes & accords in this one: lots of tobacco, labdanum/cistus, Oud & olibanum, so the opening is big...... VERY BIG but actually, they all get along very nicely together with the tobacco being suitably dominant. The mandarin orange and coriander give a subdued underlying freshness to the brashness of the opening, with the cumin becoming more dominant in the mid, underpinned by a lovely creamy sandalwood. I’m not a fan of heavy cumin personally.... it’s not too sweaty and funky in here but it did annoy me for about 20 minutes I can’t deny, in the mid to early dry-down. I also pick up quite a dark boozy accord in the opening & mid, despite nothing being listed in the breakdown; it’s more a rum/cognac soaked aging barrel accord than a whisky-style spirit accord but it is very complimentary to the other big notes. That being said, it is an Extrait de Parfum, so you’d expect, or at least demand, that the performance be strong but as we all know, that’s not necessarily always the case these days. It’s been pretty chilly here in London today with heavy winds and I was getting fantastic wafts of it all the way home. It’s too early to judge the longevity or projection but it’s giving a huge sillage still after four or so hours, so I’m guessing it is going to be a big performer. Wonderful colour too, not dissimilar to SL Chergui....... If you’re a fan of this style of perfumery and love big & beefy fragrances that are almost overwhelming, then I wholeheartedly recommend getting your nose on this one: it won’t disappoint and a perfect time for its release with it getting colder. Impressive!

Most of whats being said about it is true. Its not worth its price. Much better out there. Smells old. I myself rarely wear this going out. Yes. But this perfume has character. Its unapologetic, not in a designer made for teenagers kind of way. But in a classy this is how i am and i love it kind of way. Its loud, it lasts a BUNCH, components are high quality. Its like if you see a beautiful audacious woman wearing a red long dress at a party. If thats what youre into youll go for it, if not no. Not saying the perfume is perfect, it really isnt. It has flaws you cant ignore. HOWEVER similarly to everything thats too much fun, for the moments where nothing matters, theres nothing else like it. In this perfumes case thats the opening. O my god i could talk about how those three ingredients make me feel for hours. The mandarin is bright and sour, the tobacco gives it depth, the cumin and coriander give it a weird sweetness. Its literally perfect. While feelings are subjective, I can objectively say nobody can hate on this opening (just the opening tho i agree on the rest). I dont even like mandarin, lemon, etc (citrus) smells. I find them to be usually overdone and made cheaply but the mandarin here is on a different level. I doubt this review will help push anyone to buy the perfume. And thats not what i was going for, im just sharing my experience with it. A buying guide for this can be literally as simple as: opening is straight up magical, the rest makes it not worth the time, money or shelf space. If you want to get this as a collectors item, as something you smell sometimes and love the opening of, do so. If you want to buy this hoping youll get to wear it...please dont.

I was looking for a classy scent and a tobacco scent. And this did it for me. At the beginning its sour and that all calms down after a bit. The tobacco starts peeking through and the mandarin helps it. Its not an ashtray tobacco like pdm herod or super sweet one like Amouage Royal Tobacco, this is sour clean tobacco. All that said theres a lot more mandarin in here than tobacco. It wouldve been more appropriate for this to be called Smoked Mandarin, or Dark Mandarin or something, the tobacco is overshadowed and somewhat hard to notice especially in the opening to middle drydown. To explain the tobacco in this id say just smoke a cigarette and smell your fingers afterwards, that made clean somehow and with mandarin on it. The oud comes in play after a while although still only a bit for my skin, it does give depth and character to the whole scent while never being the star. One of the very few perfumes id suggest not to wear during day time. Its not that its too loud its just the scent profile itself i feel like is better reserved for the nighttime. Unisex leaning masculine. Lasts a decent time on my dry skin (6 7h, most fragrances dont go past 4). DONT PUT IT ON WHITE OR LIGHT CLOTHES AS IT WILL STAIN THEM. 10/10 for what it goes for. Price is a bit high no matter how good the perfume is. Definitively test it before you buy it. Completely different scent on paper and on skin.

The best Byredo by far. It all makes sense from start to finish. Byredo's offerings are usually all very pleasant, but they never really move me or transport me anywhere - instead seeming unfocused or confusing...or confused, like they're trying to say so many things at once. This one is making a definite statement, that it's opulent and sensuous, even deep and dark, but not overly extravagant or showy. Maybe because it's an extrait, the whole scent is very basenote heavy, dense and rumbly. Even the tobacco smells like a basenote - warm and rounded, and not overly dry or fruity. If there is a dryness to the tobacco, it's balanced out by the oiliness of the labdanum and olibanum. That said, the overall fragrance isn't overwhelming in the slightest. It's like being rubbed in oil - soft, silky, deep, rich and warming. The feeling that sandalwood, labnanum and olibanum conjures up. The extra heavy dose of labdanum ties everything together - the rich tobacco, the soft mandarin, the gentle birchy leather. The spices serve only to support and provide a bit of dimension rather than to be standout notes. Love it. Will sell my car and get a small decant.

Amazing fragrance! My favourite from this underrated brand! The mandarin on top gives a fruity nuance but the fragrance is mainly deep, smokey and woody. The main notes to my nose are mandarin, tobacco amber and oud! Performance is amazing, great longevity and projection and a few sprays are more than enough. This is not a versatile fragrance, it's more like a night out, special occasions scent that it will get a lot of attention! I find it completely unisex. Overall, a must try if you like this type of fragrances! The only drawback is that it's way overpriced. If this was in the usual Byredo price range it will be a no brainer but not at 255 euros. I prefer Vanille Havane or Pdm Carlisle over this.. they are not close but they are on the same family in my opinion 🙂

just discovered this recently and i fell in love with it went to bloomingdales a few days ago and salesperson told me they were sadly discontinuing this and reine de nuit within the next 6-12mos T_T edit: 3/1/25 another sales rep at a diff bloomingdales said that instead they were keeping tobacco mandarin and replacing sellier with another edit: 10/14/25 they are now all discontinued :C i also forgot to talk about the fragrance, so here are my thoughts. the most appealing aspect of the fragrance to me is not the opening but at the 5 min mark and on, the cumin really projects for the rest of the duration of the entire spray. the cumin is bodily and dirty but in the perfect way for a night out, but it could be definitely be offensive at most other places.

Tobacco Mandarin is more like a room than a classic perfume. When I close my eyes, I’m sitting in a theatre or a burlesque club in 1800s London. Tobacco has seeped into the walls. Worn leather sofas line the room. Incense drifts through the air. Someone is smoking in the corner. Somewhere else, a passing stranger leaves behind the faint scent of her mandarin perfume. The contrast is what makes this so special. The fragrance feels vulgar and elegant at the same time. Dark and warm. It smells like wearing a fur coat a snowy December night and at the same time, being in a horny, smoky backroom. Every time I wear it, it tells me a story. One of the most evocative, provocative and beautiful fragrances I have ever smelled!

I immediately bought this when i heard that it is being discontinued! I have been thinking about this fragrance for over a year! This is actually a really good compliment getter, even though it is very strong and heavy (and with the cumin that some have said smells like sweat?). A couple people have said that it smells like Christmas, which i can agree on with the incency tobacco, oud and mandarin note. I have seen some people here saying they dont get the mandarin note, but i defenitly get it right after spraying it, sweet and green. I really enjoy wearing this, it gives me a mysterious and vampiric vibe. But defenetly for colder weather, NOT in hot summer days!

This is delicious, dark and very high quality! I don't usually expect fragrances like this from Byredo, but a friend told me to try this and I'm not disappointed at all. I agree with others who say the is the best Byredo, I am such a big fan of this one. I primarily get tobacco, mandarin and cumin, a note I usually hate but here it works perfectly. It's not funky at all, just super interesting. When I think of quality niche perfumes, something like this is what I think of. It is such a joy to wear and makes me excited about perfume as a whole. I am eager to try the other Byredo releases in this series based on how impressive Tobacco Mandarin is. 5 stars

Got a 2ml sample of this, the low reviews are extremely surprising to me, im new to byredo fragrances but own other good quality perfumes e.g. ombre nomade from lv, and Im not usually particularly fond of tobacco scents (i think it smells terrible) however this one, my oh my, it has genuinely a very luxurious smell on my skin and actually lasts a fair while (i can acc smell it about in the air after a few hrs of applying on skin). Didn't at all expect to like this perfume as much as I do. Applying this to my skin genuinely makes me feel very high quality. Usually never write reviews but I feel like I have to do this fragrance justice.

The moment I smelled this I absolutely fell in love. It has all the notes I would usually avoid, specially together, as they tend to lean masculine. However, this scent has some allure and sweetness, it’s warm and spicy and gives me a sense of comfort. For a Byredo perfume, this is quite potent and long lasting. A single spray is enough to last all day. I find it overwhelming in the hot weather but sometimes, even then I put a little of it on because I’m quite addicted to it. This is definitely not for everyone, as I’ve heard from some people it’s quite strong. Spray with caution

Best tobacco scent I've had. A very nostalgic, smoky and spicy smell. You will stand out by wearing this- a very luxury, hookah lounge, smell. The oud is really good. You can smell the mandarin if you can take a real deep breath after spraying, but its quite faint as this is a darker and heavier scent so the citrus notes sit beneath these heavier notes. This scent has a lot of complexity and gets better the more I wear it. Unique, mysterious sort of arab-like smell. Kinda smells like that one rich guy at the mosque. smoky, sweet, spicy Masculine. def a killer fall scent

This is a sexy tobacco that is sweetened by this Mandarin that gently floats above it. The note reminds me of the oranges in Christmas pudding, caramelised and there with a slight liqueur note. The anamalic notes are sublte and provide depth with the spices. They warm everything and stay cosy throughout the wear. The woods seem dryer and an element of sawdust that I find really pleasing. It’s not a blind buy, it’s expensive, it’s also incredibly unique, long lasting and I have got great compliments from both men and women when I wear this in cold weather.

My first approach to Byredo was this . Tobacco Mandarin is an exuberant mix of spices and of course, tobacco. Opens up very strong but falls a little short in silage , it’s sensual and warm , very close to Chergui but less soft . But there’s a problem, the price . I was expecting a true beast for such a high price, I mean .. $330 USD for 50ml , a juice that doesn’t react as an extrait. The composition is beautiful but needs a master longevity to compensate that excessively high price. I wouldn't pay more than $200 for it.

Only tried it once recently after original trying years ago so take my opinion with a grain of salt. I'm suprised at the low ratings here. Solid tobacco fragrance that despite the dark (and staining) juice, isn't super heavy like you'd imagine. The tobacco has a little Redman nuance (country boys and guys who played baseball will understand this reference) tucked away amongst the typical tobacco and mandarin. Maybe they put a little raisin in it perhaps. I'm going to test more soon and update my review.

First impressions from a tester strip: incredible! The fiirst decent fragrance issued by Byredo! Nice plummy-leathery-spicy orange vanillic thing. Blurry but overall good. Full bottle worthy? Unfortunately, it's again a no. For a simple reason: like others have noticed before me, this is Atelier Cologne Tobacco Nuit with an extra drop of orange. Seriously... why would I pay $330 for just 50ml, when I paid around $100 for 200ml of TN on ebay?? For an extra drop of orange? Oh please....

Never have I ever felt so strongly about a fragrance. This is so out of my typical preferences and I never could’ve expected to even moderately like it. I can’t begin to describe how perfect this is and particularly in the opening... The most stunning sweetness you can imagine. I think I fell in love right then and there at galleries Lafayette and I will never ever be able to get this out of my mind. One day I’ll cave in and butcher my savings for this

It should have called Sweet Cumin. It’s very spicy I don’t smell any flowers nor orange but it’s obvious tobacco and lots of spices. I hate that I love this one so much as I’m thinking to add a full bottle to my collection. It’s strong, bold and last for days with the red juice that can leave stains on your clothes. Since it smells like Body odor Definitely not for everyone. I would wear abd enjoy this fragrance while I’m home alone.

Absolutely my favorite fragrance. Deep, spiced, mysteriously sweet. It feels like an August night for me. I smell it all day and it really makes me so happy. Cumin is present, then orange/leather. The dry down is this slightly dried spice, that retains a subtle sweetness but leans into a dried woodiness. This as an evening fragrance is next level. I don’t really find it to solely be a cold weather fragrance, but that’s my opinion.

My greatest discovery in 2024. This is an incredible perfume and the most unique tobacco scent I have tried so far. Kinda reminds of Joop but much darker, more intense with a lot more tobacco. quite interesting, addictive & sexy. It definitely has a fruity note but doesn't smell like mandarin (at least for me). Longevity & sillage is amazing. 2-3 sprays are more than enough for 12+ hours. Definitely the best from Byredo. 10/10

Stunning tabbacco, the expensive high quality kind and the most mouth watering mandarin peels from the island of Sicily joined together to create this gorgeous beauty. This frag is so complex and so so so so good i cannot even put into words. Smelling this fragrance got me full on into this niche, I am now a fraghead. Thanks to this fragrance i discovered fragnantica.

Heartbreakingly good (partially because of the price but also it has this very intense, doomed love affair vibe to it). The blood-red juice feels vampyric – & if any scent I’d attribute to a contemporary young-ish European vampire, it’d be this one – it’s sexy, spicy, primal, sweet, weird, decadent, & totally, devastatingly, pretty.

Interesting scent. Somewhat more masculine yet definitely unisex. Quite strong but not offensive. Spicy and fresh at the same time. Good performance for the first two hours, after which it gets closer to the skin. But since we’re talking about Byredo, the brand making perfume with zero to weak performance, this is just brilliant.

This smells divine - love at first sniff. It reminds me of candles in a church, with a sweet twist. The longevity is next level; I can still smell it on my clothes the next day. I think it's a bit overpriced and could be more complex. That said, it's my go-to this winter. Definitely not for everyone so make sure to test it!

Freshly set off fireworks comes to mind! New Year’s Eve fragrance anyone? A bit of bitterness and a little bit of sweetness from the mandarin, maybe mandarin peel? With the bitterness being the white layer of the peel.. I definitely love it, but be ware. Not for everyone!

Best Byredo release in ages (after Sellier of course) and definitely best of four Byredos released in 2020! Love the way it performs on the skin. Careful it stains clothes though, so be precise with your application. Longevity-beast, Sillage-arm's length, gender- unisex.

Amazing blend of citrus and Tobacco. I’m not one to wear Tobacco as they tend to lean masculine on me but I think anyone can rock this. The Tobacco is prominent in a good way. The sandalwood and oud escapes you in the dry down. This is beastly, a little goes a long way.

This is very similar to Atelier Tobacco Nuit, which even has similar notes including the cumin, tobacco, olibanum, and labdanum (I don't get any mandarin). It's good, but so is the Atelier - I'll stick with that one considering how much more expensive this is.

9 months after having that masterpiece it is still one of my most treasured scents. It is giving me cumin, sweet citrus tobacco and light barnyardy oud in the drydown. Complex classy and a slightly controversial. One of the best ones out there

Smelt this today for the first time. It’s quite nice. The tobacco lingers around for a long time. I don’t get much else. I get a sweetness and a sort of “zing” from the Mandarin of the tail end of the sniff that I take. Not a bad release. 8/10

Beautiful. Exactly what it says it is. Tobacco? In spades. Mandarin. Juicy and sweet. I love it. I love it so much I want a full bottle. Out of several perfumes I tried this was the one that stood out the most to me.

this is so sexy, dark and mysterious. it’s the type of fragrance that singers write songs about when their lover leaves in the middle of the night and they can still smell their scent on the sheets.

I completely adore this but can't justify the price point and am DYING to find something to fill the hole in my heart my sampler left me with.

Byredo Tobacco Mandarin first impressions notes. I have been testing this for the past 4 days as it's a difficult one to describe. It's complex and unique too . - it's a slightly spicy boozy incensy tobacco - The Mandarin in the opening is present as a thick tart fruit but as expected from such a fragrance containing very heavy notes, the Mandarin isn't very clear. It comes with a dark heavy blast of the spice , incense, balsam and tobacco. It soon becomes less noticeable yet I believe it's still contributing to what's coming ahead. - The frankincense/Olibanum is slightly incensy/smoky and is present through the majority of the lifetime of this fragrance. - The cumin is only slightly detectable when smelled really upclose . I don't detect it otherwise . I hate cumin but it's not bothering me at all here . I'm even detecting it less the more times I wear it . - The star of the heart of this fragrance is the tobacco and it's really nice here . It's intertwined by a boozy slightly sweet note in the mid which doesn't appear in the note breakdown. - The fragrance gets a bit balsamic later on due to the labdanum yet not powdery. The frakincense still going at this stage . - There is some sandalwood in the base which is slightly dusty yet not medicinal. - Performance is very good . Above average. - I am impressed by it and looking forward to wearing it again . i recommend sampling this a few times at first. its not a crowd pleaser.

There is really only some sticky mandarin in the very initial spritz. I don`t get much oud at all and only the faintest idea of white leather. I mostly get roughly ground cumin and the softest blonde tobacco on a gentle woody base with a remaining soft underlying sweetness. The cumin with the low-key initial fruity touch is a little reminiscent of Kenzo Jungle L`Elephant to me. It ́s absolutely not the same, mind! Just roughly of the same family, although Tobacco Mandarin is much more gentle and level-headed both in sweetness and spice levels. I`ve been wearing my little sample for a few days now, and I really enjoy it. Very easy to wear. Absolutely unisex. Longevity is good but it`s not projecting much. Really more of a sensual feel-good scent for oneself. I feel this would have signature scent potential for some people. However, at the price of course getting a sample first is a must. Still, it`s first Byredo fragrance I really liked and found wearable for myself. Well done

Yankee candle but much higher quality. 8/10 This has this generic fall smell that I have smelled a thousand times from a cheap candle but this is so much better. Its what those candles wanted to be but couldn’t. It avoids the overly sweet and synthetic ingredients and ends up more complex and subtle. The cumin gives it a slight animalic or sweat note that like salt in cookie dough brings out he subtlety of all the other flavors and adds some space between the notes to pick out the details. Upon smelling this I get a vision of golden leaves on the sidewalk rustling in the wind, as well as apple cider cooking on the stove with a stick of cinnamon. This doesn’t smell masculine or leathery. It’s very Christian girl autumn, ugg boots, pumpkin spice latte but the best and highest quality version of that smell. A less sweet and synthetic version makes me understand the ideal upon which all these smells were based.

On skin, cumin overwhelmed all other top notes then frankincense and leather started their appearance. On clothing it’s vice versa. Anyway, the cumin remains to the last. No mandarin was detected. Very slight tobacco detected on clothing but skin dry down is tobacco based. Interesting perfume but probably not for me. Dry down is nice pleasing tobacco based scent, on the sweet side, but the cumin is a put off for me as it reminds me of some curry and I don’t like to smell like that. Maybe layering it with some other perfumes might make this work better. And yes, this perfume is a stainer. Beware when spraying on light colored clothing. If you want a good tobacco perfume, try Tom Ford Tobacco Vanille or Tobacco Oud. This sure doesn’t hit the spot for me and really doesn’t make it worth paying the price.

Sleek modern Oriental that showcases a nice refined tobacco note. The perfume opens with a juicy mandarin orange surrounded by slight hints of cumin and coriander. The dense heart has the tobacco with slight touches of labdanum and leather. The perfume settles on powdery incense and sandalwood with a slight touch of oud. The masculine leaning scent has moderate to strong sillage and good longevity. Not hugely original but a fun ride with an ambience of a vintage men’s club in Hongkong or China. Enjoy!

Smells like Firework right after spraying. I find it very interesting, don’t think I ever smelled something similar before. My problem with it is that it’s very aggressive and on the nose, so I don’t think I’d wear it more than maybe 3-5 days a year, but do appreciate the idea and creativity behind it. If you’re looking to stand out not just by spraying something obnoxiously overprojecting like Erba Pura, but also by scent profile, this might be for you.

I was always a bit sad that I felt I was enjoying this beauty alone. My fave fragheads never really spoke about this but this is such a good one. This has such a cashmere like feel to it at dry down. The mandarin and tobacco work so well together and dries down to a dark yet sweet smoky scent that does not smell like cheap cigarettes but has a warmth to it especially when layered well. This scent is great for layering.

It opens with a cool, refreshing vibe that doesn’t feel overwhelming—even in summer. However, the dry down didn’t quite win me over. The herbal-tinged tobacco note wasn’t to my taste. While the composition is undeniably refined, it doesn’t align with my personal preferences. Given the price point, I wouldn't invest in a full bottle. For colder months, I’d much rather reach for Tobacolor.

Definitely my favourite offering from this house that I have tested thus far. More smoke than tobacco, and I also get a floral note that gives this a slightly unisex edge. Dig the hell out of the cumin and the mandarin in the opening is of good quality. I can totally imagine sipping a Negroni to this.

I really like this. Especially the spices, which makes you think you are in an Indian spice market. But the base notes are so dominated by sweet vanilla that the more masculine spice in the open and mid just get wiped out by the femininity in the base. Great stuff, but more for women than men.

Very strong cuming opening, this one is definitely not blind buy safe. Byredo normally offers sutil and somehow soft experiences. This one is quite the opposite. It can be really nice if you get used to it but expect no compliments.
