Poivre Sacré

Gave me tingles in all the right places. Caron's usual wonderfully piquant pepper note, here showcased in a mellower, more rounded and woodier setting than in either the pinker, more-femme gaudy twinkliness of Parfum Sacre or the more stripped-down manly minimalism of Poivre Imperial. So: this ends up in the totally happy place in between: that gorgeous pepperiness is given extra heft and bounce by the resins and wood, but still kept prickling away with a bristling heaping spoonful of other spices too. All cooks up a storm and lasts for a very respectable 6-8h on skin, yet somehow the effect is smooth and soothing, rather than a yelling spice-cupboard rampage. You could enjoy several servings per day without feeling overwhelmed - and others around you won't feel bombarded. Cumin didn't seem huge or sweaty to me; the whole ensemble tends more towards a sort of nutty-brown woody backdrop than a giant cavalcade of lurid clashing colours. Skews very very slightly male in my view but not enough to stop any lady with good taste from wearing and enjoying it too. A subtle masala mixed with a clever, restrained and sophisticated hand! Delicious.

I had three perfumes my whole life, one for the spring-summer, one for the fall-winter and one for the evenings and special events. The love for perfumes started in May this year with this one. I did love perfumes before, but Povre Sacre made me passionate about them, to find out how is it possible to have such a complex experience with a perfume. For me, Poivre Sacre takes me to a warm and opulent garden with no flowers, just jewels. I did feel the pepper and the frankincense and something more, strong, almost overwhelming. That made me wait for more than half a year. Passing the shop, testing it multiple times, I had the clear thought that I need it. It was the coriander, possible some cumin that made me hesitate but after a few tests I noticed I love the dry down, is warm, is sweet but not sugary sweet and still present. I feel the pepper all the way. It has everything I love in a perfume but in a very unique combination. I am not a collector, I am still learning about perfume but I had to start the reviews with this one. It all started with this one and, even though my bank account is not happy, I regret nothing.

This comes with a very personal touch for me right from the first spray. The peppery blast of frankincense opened the impression of a melodic hum reminescent of a monastic murmur during a vesper. But once it settles, the warmth behind it takes me out of the priesty solemnity and I get embraced by this diaphane, delicate vapour which has sublty continued to persist after a cooked down, forever stirred fruit consomme. I'm getting this velvety softness which I simply adore from cumin and saffron. The resin's cue gives a very distinct finness to its nuttinness. To me, the pungency comes from coriander not so much from the pepper. 9/10

This is absolutely mesmerising! Full of understated and effortless elegance, this smells of old money and tradition, kept and cherished through the centuries. Warm and melancholic resins in the centre, layered with fiery nutmeg, cooling coriander and saffron, and at the top there's ever-present tingling black pepper. In my perception this scent isn't monstrous neither in longevity, nor in sillage - it lasts around 6 to 8 hours and doesn't knock you off in its penetrative presence. But it is so flawlessly composed, rich and beautiful, that I don't mind to reapply.

Gorgeous fragrance for amber and incense lovers! Opens with an explosion of pepper and spices (I detect mostly saffron and nutmeg) followed by a sweet, resinous, ambery incense. I smell something smoky too, might be the guaiac wood. The more it dries down, the sweeter it gets on my skin. Longevity and sillage are moderate - I got a good 6 to 8 hours, with the last few hours being more of a skin scent. Mind you this may very in different temperatures. I love it!

This is a great perfume, mostly masculine and less unisex...

Classic Caron -- the opening notes are black pepper, saffron, and a little chocolate with an ambery base. The sharp pepper stays on clothes or scent strips but fades within a minute on my skin (like any other black pepper scent, sadly). The cooldown is a massive disappointment for me; the saffron and cinnamon stay but the oud and amber flatten to the smell of a urinal puck. The same thing happened to a lesser extent with Poivre Imperial -- I was so close to loving this but there's just a hint of gas station bathroom that kills it for me.

Completely not my style, but a very well made olibanum centered perfume. Olibanum is surrounded by spices - nutmeg, pepper and saffron, labdanum adds some depth. Very unisex, very potent. Olibanum can sometimes smell very cold and depressive, but not in this one.

In a way similar to Poivre Imperial, but whereas Imperial gets a softened pepper by a rose, Sacre gains more fresh spicy qualities. I like one and not really the other. The other being Sacre.

I love the first few seconds of pepper but it's quickly overpowered by an unpleasant, crass, sour Safraleine/oud/rose accord found in SO many "niche" perfumes. A shame.

Opens up with a blast of freshly cracked black pepper and dries down to a woody, resinous, Middle eastern rose/saffron oud kind of smell. I dont like it.

Wow, this is stunning. It opens with a very sharp, very alive, almost wet pepper, like a handful of fresh peppercorns. This top note seems to settle fairly quickly, which is actually quite nice, as I was starting to feel like a raw steak. I actually don’t mind feeling like a piece of meat, but that’s another story... As it progresses it starts to separate, allowing a smoky, juicy incense to rise up. There is a lot going on here, and for a short while the fragrance feels slightly fractured, like it’s vibrating so much it’s going to come apart. But then an accord appears, and I’m not sure what it is, it’s very unique. The scent pyramid contains Olibanum, which I am not really that familiar with. In fact I’m pretty sure that of 75+ scents I owned at one time, I would be surprised if it was a dominant player. So I *love* how dry this is, and I love the presence of incense. There is something very opulent, the quality of the materials and the bottle is next level. It feels like something Hermes could have done, but in a different decade. All in all this is a sexy and mysterious fragrance. Super high quality and I’m lucky to have a bottle. This is signature worthy, for sure.

Poivre Sacre is a gorgeously dry scent: the bitter, bracing bite of black pepper that somehow runs both cool and hot, leathery, smoky woods that feel like a cross between palo santo and cedar, and hints of grassy, earthy, bittersweet saffron and the tiniest dash of sour, pungent cumin, to keep things interesting. This is a very close-to-the-skin scent that makes me think of candle flames, shadows, and secrets, chasing the darkness to its depths, following a temptation –without succumbing– straight to its sinful, sulfurous source. And you, softly glowing, incandescent, a lit match in hell.

best scent i have smelled in a long time, no wonder it won a fragrance foundation award in 2022 for best niche perfume. it opens with pepper, saffron, dry incense, and labdanum. it is not overtly heavy in any area and overall smells like a silk around the body, silky smooth. so balanced, has a tinge of sweetness from the labdanum and is otherwise dry. it has a quality about it that i notice in the dior homme line, when compared to other fragrances is smells superior. i dare use this word without any doubts, a masterpiece. great job jean jacques, this is so far the pinnacle of this work.

This smells so much like my male Sudanese cousins obsessed with Arabian/oud/bakhoor based perfumes and so it reminds me of their strong, protective masculinity mixed with a fragrant warmth of brotherly love. I’m not normally a fan of oud-style fragrances but I would actually consider wearing this out of tribute to this specific family bond with my cousins who have always been great friends, like older brothers to me. It’s fascinating to me how a perfume can so strongly evoke specific people in our lives.

Unique fragrance. Starts dry with intense pepper and cumin. Pepper/cumin soon get more subdued and you can feel a strong saffron. Later, the fragrance gets warm and ambery without ever being sweet, there is a lovely incense, a hint of sour rose. Well blended, easy to wear. 8/10

This is not an easy and pretty scent. It has a ton of black pepper, elemi, olibanum...saffron that is mostly synthetic. This another woody cold incense scent. Smells like inky oud in the drydown. I don't think it is bad, it's just repetitive and synthetic.

Great delicate scent for everyday use. Not too intensive. I love it!
