Number Six

First wearing of Caswell-Massey Number Six (stylized with the roman numeral VI), a 2018 release that’s inspired by a much earlier creation purported to be crafted for none other than George Washington. This more modern creation features notes of bergamot, rosemary, neroli, lavender, musk, clove, and a resinous woody base. It has fresh, green, herbal, floral, citric elements that all blend together in a way that is reminiscent of other classic men’s fragrances while not being specifically a fougere, chypre, or amber. It’s less dark and spicy than Oaire but a bit more interesting than 2571, in my opinion, fitting somewhere in between, perhaps making it the most useful of the three, with strong versatility, a good blend of gravitas and accessibility. Overall, it leans classic and is very nice, inoffensive but still interesting, not too dense or spicy, but still intriguing with each sniff. I think it’s a pretty great fragrance, and I’m left wondering I’ll want a bottle of this or Oaire after I finish the decants. It’s EDP concentration and priced at $200 for 100ml, similar to other fragrances’ pricing, on the house website and a few other retailers’, and is available as part of the Legacy Discovery Set that I purchased, at $90 for 3 x 7.5ml. 8 out of 10

It's a hit with me, a much-needed summer fragrance as well. Big burst of freshness, like banners and regimental colors fluttering in the wind. Love it. 6/27/26 - After smelling it a bit more in a warmer environment, this really excels. The fresh spiciness is almost amplified when it's warm out, however I've noticed the rosemary dulls slightly, although by just a bit. Whether you're into rosemary or not, take that as you will. 8/2/26 - After many full wears, I still enjoy this and remains a favorite. I've noticed that the middle and base notes at times may be a bit unsuitable for very hot weather. It comes out like a melted hard candy. While frankly very enjoyed, try not to wear in sweltering weather. Overall, I'm very satisfied with Number Six. This scent FEELS old. It smells of antiquity, of times bygone; yet its dated blend of notes is its strength. It's so antique to where it's unique enough to wear in the modern age and be noticed by people. The fact this was George Washington's favorite fragrance makes it all the better. Well done, Caswell-Massey!

I borrowed this from my boyfriend yesterday since it was Independence Day. Wound up really liking it, and I might get a bottle myself. The initial spray is a little bit harsh, but it doesn't take long at all for the freshness of the rosemary and bergamot notes to start shining through. The clove and rose are also pronounced, but the green notes up front keep them from becoming overly sweet. It has pretty good staying power and sillage, as well. It smells like something I can only describe as "classic", which makes sense considering its history. Well-put together, with just enough complexity to keep it interesting. As much as this is getting voted a spring and summer fragrance, I can see this one working quite well in cooler weather with that clove note, too.

I first gave this to my husband some 30 or so years ago as I thought that he, who is adverse to putting anything scented on himself, would actually wear it. Not only will he wear it, he LOVES it! And it remains the only scent he will wear. And it suits him! It is somewhat upbeat and fresh, but with enough depth to ground it on him as it settles right into his skin. My husband is an Ivy Leager with a keen sense of history, and I think the fact that George Washington wore this scent appeals to him. It seems to last on him and I also like it on him. I just bought him refils of it plus the soap for Christmas.

Caswell Massey Number Six EDP 100ML $225 First I will begin with, this is my favorite, and Signature Scent. I absolutely love this scent profile. It's a nice citrus, soapy, floral fragrance that lasts on me for a good 6-8 hrs. I get more longevity if I pre moisturize with a non scented moisturizer before applying. I also wash and shave with the matching Soap, Shave Cream and After Shave. This is my daily routine. I smell fresh and clean all day and frequently asked what I'm wearing.

A fresh, yet complex and refined fragrance. Highly versatile and very classy!

I've been on a Caswell and Massey kick lately. Revisiting this historic brand has been fun and I have been impressed w/ everything I have tried as of late. I picked up the Heritage sample set as a surprise for my husband, and he really likes all of the fragrances in the sample pack. They have polished up old favorites and created some new wonderful feminine perfumes that keep w/ the brands apothecary roots but w/ a forward thinking spirit so that their perfumes are much more wearable for today. That being said, here is my review for Number 6. Number 6 starts off w/ a refreshing citrus tone, nothing sharp or overpowering just clean, refreshing orange, orange blossom, herbs, especially rosemary. As the perfume develops it keeps w/ those original fresh notes but those are blended w/ a spicy clove and green vetiver. I know those are not listed here but I smell them. This cologne would be appropriate for office wear or just general everyday wear. I see it as a signature scent for any man. It is clean, mild, and very smooth. My personal view is this, no man's cologne should overpower the woman they are with on a date etc... perfume. Caswell and Massey keep this in mind when creating fragrances for a man. They are classy, smooth and never overpowering or in bad taste.

I've wanted to try this (for historical curiosity) because the brand claims this was worn by George Washington. But I didn't want to spend much money on it because based on poor reviews, I figured this wouldn't be a good fragrance. Don't believe everything thing that you read folks, because this is a great cologne! And yes, it is a cologne (EDC) so don't expect beast longevity. But here is what you can expect. 1. Quality. This smells punches way above it's price point. IMO this smells better than fresh frags from designer houses like D&G, YSL, Maison Martin Margiella, etc. 2. Wearability. This is not a vintage smelling cologne. It has a vintage touch but is easily modern enough for 2022 3. Citrus. Bright, fresh squeezed citruses. 4. Natural. No overwhelming aroma chemicals to my nose. It's not super complex obviously because it was conceived in a different time. Top notes are as good as niche fragrances I own. Tons of citrus with a tiny bit of florals and some fresh green nuances. Don't sleep on the house of Caswell Massey, they have some wonderful options. Scent 7.5/10 Performance 4/10

This stuff doesn't last at all. It's even short-lived for a "classical" eau de cologne, though it's not as dilute to start with as 4711 is. Plus it smells like sprite or 7-up to me at first, and then turns into weird musty florals, geranium or something, and makes me envision a flowering garden shrub that's dead and just starting to rot. I'm sure it's not bad for 1780-whatever, but I've tried too many interesting EdCs, and EdC-esque EdTs, to really use this regularly. As is so often the case with real EdCs, the first few minutes are lively and exhilarating enough that I just had to keep it around, though it's contemporary 4711 seem less rough around the edges. I prefer Monsieur de Givenchy on the sweeter side, and Burberry Weekend on the drier side.

This is the Summeriest of Summer smells, but also reminds me of Christmas cake. Being Australian, this isn't strange to me. I like this, but I don't think it's a very good cologne. Does that even make sense? It appeals to me personally, but is not of particularly high quality. In fact I'd say the quality is pretty bad, all things considered. It is an old-world concept with a dystopian chemical edge. If you like it, you like it like your favourite 50s B-movie. For God's sake, don't try the scented talcum powder. It's vile.

a super nicely blended yet simple mix of citrus, aromatics and light clean lavender notes. Simplicity with this classic fragrance is very nice in the modern fragrance world. It starts with a blast of rosemary followed up by bergamot and neroli on a smooth musky floral base. Here and there you get light hints of something spicy maybe the clove? Definitely smells vintage but in a refreshing way is light, fresh and airy. I was pleasantly surprised by the performance.

So far, all the Caswell Massey fragrances I've tried have been quite good. However, none have yet compelled me to purchase a full bottle. That said, Number Six stands out as a very impressive, old-school Eau de Cologne style scent. I’m aware that it’s technically an Eau de Parfum, but its classic, refreshing character still reminds of a timeless cologne vibe.

If you've ever been to independence hall or any sites from the time of the American revolution then you have a good idea of what this smells like because it really does smells historical. It's a nice fragrance and I think it's fun to wear on patriotic holidays for a lark but it's not really an every day scent or anything you'd wear to feel sexy

Grabbed a sample. I liken it to the smell of Dial soap. I like it but probably wouldn't be my first choice when going out. A good after-shower grab maybe.

Better than expected. More modern than expected. Nice fragrance!

First impression is this reminds me of a much longer lasting L&K Florida Water. Can still be worn today. Nothing off putting about this to me. Would make a great gift for history buffs. Collectors/enthusiasts should at least get a decant for a perspective on the history of fragrance.

Super disappointing. I tried Caswell Massey as part of a brief obsession with classic mens colognes, and this one, made continuously for the last 200 years, had to be in the group. Sadly this was a total letdown. Initially, I get some kind of citrus, sure, but it's weak with very poor longevity and minimal sillage. There's an herbal note in there, coriander maybe, but it just doesn't feel harmonious. This scent seems to disagree with itself somehow. After the citrus and herbal notes dissipate, and they do, all I am left with is some kind of wet cardboard, with a hint of graham cracker? It's honestly unpleasant, and if anything ever said "old man" to me, this is it. Mind you, I love a lot of fragrances that others insist are in the "old man" category, but this one is honest to god geriatric.

As this was George Washington's cologne of choice, I had pretty high expectations. Unfortunately, I was let down. I was expecting a classic EDC, and I got that in the open. It's got a lovely citrus and floral open with a hint of rosemary that's quite refreshing. However, it lasts only a few minutes before turning into a rather strange musty herbal-floral scent. Far too many great EDC's out there. This unfortunately isn't one of them. This is a skin scent on me, with average longevity (a couple of hours).

Citrus hand soap, that's pretty much what I get. I fell in love with Caswell-Massey bath soaps, but IMO their fragrance line is inconsistent.
