No 22 Parfum

chanel no22 pure parfum, launched in 1922 a year after no 5 oh my days ! this is stunning, im in love with this parfum, i tested the edp or edt whichever is current at a chanel boutique a few months ago, well i slowly walked in with my daughter and speedily sprayed my arm, with a large tester. Then i literaly ran out in case the chanel girls convinced me to buy a bottle leaving me with no rent money lol i remember loving it , but it felt a tad too polished to go with jeans and boots, a ballgown kinda fragrance , wedding day maybe even. But she never left my mind, and i managed to get a part used rare pure parfum of no 22 on ebay, 15 ml with 8 ml to use still. The perfume gods are in town! well in last 4 days that ive had it i must have used at least 1.5 ml or more already no 22 is just that good, so addictive.i cant stop reapplying and wrist sniffing. no 22 is so clean , it smells like a crystal clear bubbling stream, if that had a scent, shes pure femininity ,smooth ,powdery and delicate, with a soapyness but its a fresh fine milled soap , bright refreshing , angelic with soft creamy elegance. The aldyhides are fizzy and huge and blow no 5 out of the water ! a feminine musky white flower filled base quickly soften the effect and make no 22 breezy , tender and crystaline. no 5 parfum has some similaritys but no 5 is more obviously sexy , rich and heady in parfum, intensive , thick , in a good way. i know what im smelling , in no 22 , what she reminds me of, im smellling no 5 but not the parfum ,instead im getting the cleaner softer muted bath products ! ! The no 5 bath products , shower gel, after bath powder and soap etc are softer than the no 5 perfume , a touch brighter and no22 is like the parfum version of the lovely bath products ( to my nose anyway) no 5 eau premiere is quite similar too. Eau premiere is very citrus fresh refreshing version of no 5, updated and summer perfect. no 22 is a stand alone fragrance however , no matter her similaritys to no 5 or the bath and shower bits as shes got her own personality ! The aldyhides are not at all stuffy , the opposite , bubbly fresh and are there non stop, love them, they only settle a little bit through the hours, they keep no 22 bright and envigorating. The notes are just perfect, silky and sweet-ish. Theres a few notes i pick up on , sweet rose , neroli, orange blossom, and benzoin and tonka bean, she leans woody a bit , but more silky smooth and musky with a touch of frosted vanilla. The animalic notes in no 5 are toned down here but theres just enough to give no 22 debth and theres a lovely bit of incense too, the overall effect is a softly sexy fragrance , i think no 5 is much more a statement maker , but 22 is still beautifull in a more conservative way, a masterpiece! No 22 is a creamy dreamy white floral, with incense & musk giving some backbone, white lilies , white tuberose, white roses, sparkling florals. if you held some beautiful white vanillary soap under the hot tap , as it bubbles up a bit , you come close to the sent of no 22 , yes she smells like clean bubbles in a sudsy bath !! how did Earnest Beaux manage to make such a beautiful timeless fragrance ? i wish i knew ! so chic , so chanel, this no 22 parfum has become instantly adored , so if you have any spare and its just taking up space , your sick of dusting the bottle , look my way , wink wink :) 11/10 for the scent 9/10 for long lasting 10/10 for scent trail ( even hours later i could still smell little wafts rising up)

Remember how yesterday I was expounding on the virtues of the Chanel Coco pure parfum from the 80s, of which my kind friend with the exquisite taste, Sarah, sent me a generous dabberful? Well, she also sent me a generous dabberful of Chanel No. 22 parfum from the 1970s, and it's like I died and went to the fancy lady heaven of my childhood. This No. 22 juice is like a time machine, and it's glorious, and it's going to be really hard to go back to my normie basics now, lolsob! In all seriousness, vintage Chanel No. 22 radiates pure class and elegance. It's a floral aldehyde, sure, but that's like saying that Tennyson's Maud is an English poem or that Beethoven's Ninth is a choral symphony: true, but inadequate. I get so many notes from No. 22 besides florals--rich, complicated, deep mosses and other woods, along with what I think is some of that bad-bitch Chanel leather accord--that I wouldn't even know what to call this. Besides exquisite, transporting, complex, and soapy in a sexy way. It's almost tragic that I'm throwing this radiance to no one but myself and my geriatric Chi mix, who doesn't exactly savor fine vintage perfumes, but the pleasure is real. Thank you, Sarah, you saint of scent! Update: I keep re-upping and huffing to the point of hyperventilation. This stuff is so beautiful that I went to the Chanel website, even in the knowledge that the parfum would be sold out (it was) and also not as good as this 1970s vintage. But the incense notes keep wafting up, and I love the soapy florals, the soft vetiver, the sandalwood-vanilla base notes (I think--the listed notes seem to vary among my sources). The aldehydes give this the starchy white-linen-classy-coastal-granny accord that I find both comforting and glamorous. Overall I think this perfume is more than a kinder, gentler No. 5, which is how it is often described. I definitely get the resemblance to No. 5, but I discern more tuberose and incense. If you love one, chances are you'll at least enjoy the other.

“A light version of No. 5.” I suppose the validity of this statement depends upon what you thought was “heavy” about No. 5, if anything. No. 22 is certainly not light. The original No. 5 is quite a bit different than what we have today, the original being a big mossy and animalic floral chypre, so if the chypre end of No. 5 was heavy for you, then, yes, No. 22 will feel lighter. If you found the aldehydes and florals of No. 5 to be the heavy part, look elsewhere than No. 22. The aldehydes in No. 22 are enormous. There is a ton of them, they are thick and round, very powdery, and hold into the perfume for hours. They are not adornments in the perfume, they are just as critical to the character of No. 22 as any other material. Like a heavy blanket they coat a rich, heady, white floral heart of tuberose and ylang-ylang. The tuberose is as usual with its loud and creamy vanillic personality, and the ylang-ylang colors the tips of the tuberose petals with a banana-fruity and custardy note. Again, to a previous point, there is nothing light about No. 22. The perception of lightness comes from the aldehydes doing their darnedest to lift this massive white floral section into the air, like Atlas straining to lift the world. Make no mistake though, it is gorgeous. Despite the heft there is an excellent breathability and diffusiveness. The florals eventually, after many, many hours, give way to a soft woody vanilla accented with a bit of sweet earthy incense smoke and - you guessed it - powder. It’s very pretty and snuggly, as soft and comfortable as a cashmere sweater. So, there we are. Light? Hardly. This is a big, luscious, heavy, tuberose vanilla pudding. But that’s not a criticism. It’s scrumptious and decadent, a benchmark for the tuberose vanilla genre.

I wore (what is now considered vintage *cough - I'll let you do the math -cough*) No. 22 for decades. Then IFRA stepped and destroyed what was my signature fragrance. Never have I found a fragrance since that I connected with on an almost cellular level. Never have I worn a fragrance since that had strangers stopping me on the street to ask me what I was wearing. Never have I picked up a bottle of perfume since, pulled off the cap, brought it to my nose and instantly thought "you're mine." No. 22 was, in its day, a glorious fragrance; perhaps a bit younger smelling than its first cousin No. 5.; but, my god it was beautiful!

Chanel No. 22 Parfum (1922) - silky floral - #ernestbeaux and #cocochanel launched a fragrance to embody Coco’s white look collection. Classy and elegant: aldehydes on a warm day resemble starched fabric. This goes well with its floral heart: Jasmine, Rose, Iris, and an array of white florals. It’s base Sandalwood and a vanillic undertone. In the Parfum concentration, aldehydes are not so sharp - refined and textures. I also get the incense drydown that was lost in the edt to edp transition. Golden hue indeed.

The parfum version of no 22 is smoother and higher quality, but otherwise retains the same character of no 22 edp. Very beautiful but I still prefer no 5 parfum.

I definitely like N°22 Parfum a bit better than the eau de parfum concentration, since I feel that the tuberose shines a bit better here and there is more floral sweetness in comparison. The longevity is also slightly better, lasting 6 hours on me instead of just 5 hours like it did with N°22 Eau de Parfum. I still would have liked to have smelt more of the tuberose though and maybe have the aldehydes dialed down a notch, though. It has a slightly artifical scent to me that reminds me a bit of laundry powder and soap. Very nice laundry powder and soap, but still laundry powder and soap! I did feel very clean and fresh wearing though, which was good. I also find it more feminine in comparison to N°22 Eau de Parfum, being a bit more similar to N°5 Eau Prémiére than N°5 Eau de Parfum. I can definitely see this fragrance being a signature scent for a certain type of woman, who is a young business professional who likes to smell clean and just out of the shower. She wears white, oatmeal and beige clothes to work and likes to get a clear or pale pink French manicure. She is very put together and confident in a quiet way and likes to wear very natural looking makeup. This fragrance would be this working professional's day-into-night fragrance that she spritzes on as her good ole faithful, ready for her at the drop of the hat from spring to winter. Very nice, but definitely a bit boring and not super unique. I'd give this fragrance a 7.6/10, meaning that I find it very nice but not something I would go out and buy a full bottle of. I am glad that I have at last tried this very famous fragrance though and expanded my fragrance knowledge. I was just hoping it would be a more romantic and floral aldehyde fragrance like Jean Patou's Joy, I guess. Now that fragrance is GORGEOUS!

I am reviewing something so divine... Words cannot express. I am all into the house of Chanel when it comes to perfume and I have a large collection to choose from. I have a large collection overall but it's Chanel that I really want to continue wearing and purchasing. I have yet to meet a Chanel fragrance I disliked, each and every one that I have smelled is just constructed with perfection. There is something I cannot describe that draws me into # 22 - no other perfume has seduced me this much. Going through my stash of samples and oh... Something stops me in my tracks... Oh this smells heavenly... Which sample has leaked a little? Of course # 22. I own several bottles, concentrations etc of this and every single time I put any on... I can't get enough. But let's focus on the parfum here. I was lucky to acquire a 30 (!) ml bottle of the vintage extrait. And vintage it is... It's from either the 50s or the 60s. The juice has turned the darkest brown it could ever be. Macerated. Aged. There is absolutely not a single note "off". Oh by the way the ones that CAN (but don't necessarily have to) turn "off" are vintage Cristalle or even #19. I know because I own both: vintage #19 that is perfection - and a vintage #19 that smells a bit vinegary upon the opening. But #22? Never. #5? Never ever. Well my super vintage #22 parfum opens with the most aldehydes one can ever imagine could exist. Literally "wind in the hair" note. Very floral, deep floral. Incense-y a just a tad. Let it dry down for 30 minutes and the most heavenly aroma starts to emanate from the skin. So SOFT. Yes that's right: super soft. It's like deep floral and soft at the same time. So rich yet delicate. I believe that one perfume can be a super best seller, the absolute masterpiece for one yet just "meh" for the other. I will not dare say #22 will be loved by all. Absolutely not. Can even be difficult for many. But to me it's the most heavenly scent. It's just my personal preference. I love #5. I love Bois des Iles. I really do and enjoy wearing them but it's #22 that I can't get enough and is my absolutely #1 holy grail of a scent. Every time I smell #22 I am reminded that it should NOT have been my most favorite perfume - I always gravitated more towards aloof irises or orientals like Coco. That would have been what describes my personal tastes. But all that has been surpassed in my love for #22. I own this one Eau de Cologne, Eau de Toilette, Eau de Parfum, parfums from super long time ago through the 80s extrait all the way to the more contemporary parfum. Just no matter what time period of production or concentration there is something about #22 that just draws me right in like no other. Oh it's not listen here but I do detect the most beautiful Orange Blossom nots in my parfums - oh definitely. I would have never guessed that my holy grail of a perfume would end up the one that has tuberose and aldehydes in it!! 10/10 but for me it's 1000000/10.

*This review is for the vintage EDT in the square lacquer spray bottle. I first encountered this when I was an exchange student in Europe and met up with my cosmopolitan aunt who lived near London at the time. She wore it, and although she was a different generation than I, I still fell in love with it on her and it smelled classy and beautiful, not "old." She let me try it and, *swoon,* I had to have my own. On a college student's budget it was quite a splurge, so I ate nothing but macaroni and cheese for weeks - but it was well worth it. One must have priorities.... Years went by before I tried it again, being unaware of reformulation. Alas, the Exclusifs version, while lovely, hasn't nearly the depth and interest of the original. It does not evolve into anything rich and layered over time and on my skin at least, stays much the same start to drydown. As for the original - what a stunner. I bought a vintage (slightly used) bottle on ebay, minus the lacquered case. No matter. It evokes all the memories of my chic aunt and my year in Europe, and the scent has held up well over the decades. From the opening aldehydes and soft floral/powdery notes to the incense and slightly woody base, to the clean and slightly soapy smell that comes out especially on hotter days, I can't stop sniffing it. It never ceases to get compliments. The sillage is bigger than I realized - a gentleman actually shouted at me from several feet away in a parking lot that I smelled incredible. I suppose it was a breezy day but nonetheless... Aside from the fond memories it triggers, this would be a "love" even had I discovered it during another time. It is not overpowering (despite the above gentleman's comment), and is gorgeous from start to finish. After an entire day and evening it winds down as a skin scent, but a distinctive one. I would bathe in this stuff if I could. As a testament to its timelessness and transgenerational appeal, even my daughter who is in her 20's remarked with surprise "Wow, that smells really good!" Need I say more?

The smell of true love in a bottle! If you read my previous review of N°22 from years ago, you know that this has always been a staple in my collection, not only one of my favourite perfumes that I could never be without but as dramatic as it sounds this perfume has become a part of me. It literally is the smell of true love, there’s something so innocent and vulnerable about this fragrance that transports me back to my childhood, like a comforting warm blanket wrapped around me whenever I wear N°22. Other then N°5 it’s the only perfume that brings this kind of deep emotion out of me, I could never imagine this fragrance being discontinued as it truly is a masterpiece creation from Ernest Beaux, to create something so timeless, luxurious, elegant, beautiful is a very hard achievement and the fact that it’s survived since 1922 adds even more feeling to this fragrance! It has seen a lot and been around long before I was alive which makes it even more special! Over the years I’ve had the vintage refillable EDT adorned in the white case, the les exclusives EDT (less incency but still N°22) and currently own the 15ml parfum which I purchased last year before the pandemic, I also plan to own the EDP very soon as it smelled like a more rich, deeper version of N°22 closer to the pure parfum! Out of all the different versions of N°22 they all carry the same DNA and I love them all in their own way, I wear the pure parfum to bed and have the best sleep catching wafts of this before I drift off into deep sleep, The scent of dreams

Just tried this classic via 4ml EDP sample bottle - beautiful! I would agree with all Camden-girl's comments, but wonder if the actual parfum is stronger or maybe different as it doesn't have the same notes listed as the EDP? Its so hard to find the early classics unless the perfume houses re-issue them (sometimes reformulated of course) and my experience with getting vintage samples is not so good! I am very pleased with this EDP though, pretty floral and very elegant.

Just layer No. 5 with your favourite white floral. You'll get No. 22, ...or quite possibly something even better.
