E for Men Gourmand Oriental With Sweet Clove

I’ve had to revisit this as I don’t think my previous review captured succinctly how good this is. If you like clove this is the ultimate representation other than Beaute Du Diable by Liquides Imaginaires (which is more syrupy and smooth) or Captain Fawcetts Booze and Baccy (not as poignant and a half/half scent with tobacco). This one chokes!!! In the best possible sense. It’s like someone throws you into a room covered into finely ground clove dust that is three inches thick and every movement stirs up a cloud that suffocates. This is the cinnamon which adds sweetness too perfectly mixed just behind the ground clove. It comes across especially at first application with a vinegary opening and quickly followed with a melted chocolate sauce like McDonalds used to have on their sundaes before the drydown shows it’s dustiness with the clove and cinnamon. Behind this is a not overly prominent Ylang Ylang, binding it together as a base and stopping it from coming across as a too dusty dry and in your face cacophony. Amazing scent. A challenging one, not because it is loud but because it may make people cough! It comes across not as loud, brash and showy like some but rather as a genuine gourmand with enough twerking that makes it a loud head turning mature scent. It will polarise, I’m sure most will either love or hate it. Worth the experience no matter what you decide as it’s just so unique.

I've got to say I really like this perfume. Having worn it when it was released (Thanks Clive Christian for the samples) I remember being quite taken by this. It's a chewy, resinous, gourmand, a kind of dark, boozy dessert, with ashy, smoked wood undertones. Sounds lame, but it's completely unique I'd say, I really can't think of much that smells like this. I revisited it today because I found this sample in my garage, randomly. This is the kind of thing I should really hate coz it's in the style perfumes everyone seems to rave about, and I'm just kinda like 'really?' but this one is a better version of your Black Phantom (another one I revisited in the last week or so) or a bit like the sort of boozy, cakey stuff I do like, see 1270 by Frapin. This has something extra for me, it smells expensive and I can't help liking it A LOT! I'd never pay the daft price tag and do I think it's what I consider 'proper' perfume, no, and not really. However, I'm really enjoying wearing it today and did the first time (the fact I could remember it says that it left a lasting impression) that's what counts.

Clive Christian E for Men takes the idea of a Gourmand Oriental to the extreme. Upon initial spray you’re blasted by an intense accord of oak barrels housing beautifully aged rum and red wine of the highest quality, with a noticeable alcoholic burn hitting the back of your throat. From here there’s a slight fruity, leathery touch from peach and labdanum, which paves the way for the dominant note of clove. Clove is the biggest hitter in this fragrance - it’s dark, earthy, powerful and intoxicating, supported ever so slightly by cinnamon. The base is where the gourmand qualities shine through however; bourbon vanilla, maple syrup and caramel make up the delicious edible facet of this scent. This takes gourmand perfumery to a whole new level and is perfect for those who love boozy scents. It smells like gorgeously sweet and syrupy mulled wine which makes it perfect for the Christmas period. Completely unapologetic and overpowering, this is definitely not one to blind buy but so so incredible for the right audience.

Wow!!! Out of the half dozen samples gifted me and CC purchases this is the first one that grabs me and puts it within my bench marks from Xerjoff, Lucas 777 et al. Get the oriental hint but it’s pretty much gourmand for me. A stinker in the best possible way from get go, vanilla ever present it seems, with chocolate, coffee on a powdery base smoothed by a not particularly prominent Rose and a definite but not overly prominent ylang ylang binding the clove and sandalwood (which I assume is feeding the false vanilla choc and coffee). Whilst clove is smashing you in the face for the most part it surely can not be the only gourmand ingredient as I swear it’s vanilla and coffee and tobacco too... if it is then it’s hats off for the creative journey you sent me on... Not for the faint hearted or for professional use...

I tried samples of this fragrance on several occasions for about 2 weeks and I thought it was intriguing. Days later, I still smelled the fragrance on my coat sleeve from the overspray. I bought it. It is absolutely wonderful. The marketing says it brings calm and promotes relaxation. I think it does. The cinnamon, cloves and sandlewood are a very pleasing blend. This is excellent, a master’s blend. It lasts a very long time. Here it is 2:30am and I can still smell wafts of it from this mornings application. It may remind you of Bond’s New Harlem. It has that sweet syrup and light rum undertones but I’m sure that it’s the sandalwood base that is conducting the refined cinnamon and cloves. It smells expensive and it is, but is great for me. I love it and look forward to putting it on in my rotation of fragrances.

It never ceases to astonish and amuse me how fragrantica keeps putting out incorrect notes - and people review scents based on that very misinformation and actually fool their brains into smelling what simply ain’t there. RA Wilson and “what the thinker thinks the prover will prove” come to mind. Yellow florals? Clary sage?? Sandalwood??? Here? My goodness some apparently have no clue what they are dealing with...it’s embarrassing, but let’s make some noises anyways! The correct notes for this composition are Rum, Osmanthus, Labdanum, Cinnamon, Cade, Maple, Clove, Amber, Patchouli, Peat, Myrrh, Oakwood, Caramel. Vanilla, Oakmoss and Wine Lees and E smells like Creme brûlée on the borderline of being burnt.

I just bought this because I got a good deal. I am not even that much into gourmands, but GOD DAMN!!! Like it or not, even my amateur nose can smell that this is next-level perfumery! It smells realistic, the performance is INSANE, and I actually really love this one! It`s a sticky, boozy and spicy gourmand, but I don't find it cloying. IMO, it is super well-blended, and you only need like two sprays for it to last and project for 12hours+!! Considering the quality and how little you need to spray, I find the price decent. There is no way you get a "cheapy" smelling anywhere near this!

Of the five C, L, I, V, E bottles in my travel set, this is the one, the only one, really. I think it is absolutely gorgeous. Rum and coffee, with caramel and other sweet things, in the beginning. Later it dries down to a sweet spicy clove. I'm surprised that I love that part too. Normally clove wouldn't be my thing. If I put it on paper, the clove doesn't work for me. But on my body, yes. One spray is enough for me. It lasts all day as a fairly subtle thing I notice frequently. The notes listed at the top of the page are all wrong, btw.

Imagine eating a crepe drizzled with caramel syrup, while the warm, spicy aroma of a crackling fireplace surrounds you. What’s intriguing about this fragrance is that, from a distance, it gives off a sweeter, cola-like impression. It exudes maturity, sophistication, and richness. The opening may feel polarizing, but give it some time, and you’ll find yourself addicted to its charm. But it's hard to find something that justifies the price point.

A smokey vanilla among many smokey vanillas, but stands out with its warm syrup theme, don’t really get any peach myself but when temperatures get warmer, has a bananas foster like scent to me. Got a random compliment from a cashier today, so it must project better than it seems as well. Can be had for a reasonable price in the grey market.

Love this fragrance, the notes listed are wrong. The notes according to Clive Christian website is Rum, Labdanum, Sweet Bourbon Vanilla, Caramel, and Maple Syrup.

I think the low rating this perfume has here on Fragrantica has more to do with its price than the scent and performance itself. Great stuff.

Wore this to my goth autumn wedding and I smelled like a ridiculously expensive pumpkin spice dessert. No regrets.

One of the rare from Clive Christian which has full bottle worthy uniqueness and the pleasant scent and I don't talk about the price, I don't think about the price when considering if something is full bottle worthy. Opening is very strong but intoxicating and it gets the positive attention immediately. It's mostly smoky and spicy with a little bit of subtle sweetness but it's not fruity. Just to mention since I love Peach so much and it's not present here as a Peach. The feeling is like sitting next to the fireplace. The smoke dissipates in 15 minutes and the scent evolves into the smooth blend of spices, not so boozy rum and a sweet, resinous, woody aroma from Labdanum. It's not leathery her at all. This is not a strong scent at all, it's only in the opening. The scent is not actually oriental at all but if thinking the definition of gourmand, it's not exactly that either so the name "gourmande oriental" is fine, it's some kind of mix of those styles made in a unique way. The scent is totally unisex, very wearable and versatile and it's office safe as well as long as you don't spray it at the office. The sillage is moderate and the longevity is good. This reminds me of the mix of holiday desserts that are traditional to my family from Thanksgiving all the way up to Three Kings Day. It also reminds me of a delicious hot toddy, yum! If you don't like spices, this really isn't for you! Speaking for myself, I'd chase someone down the block to ask them what they're wearing if they had this on. I can't wait to wear this with turtlenecks & sweaters as it's best worn in cool weather - probably Autumn and even better for Winter.

Not sure how this is classed as a gourmand, the opening (first half hour so far) is very herbal and aromatic, with only a hint of a chewy toffee beneath, as though there’s some ethyl maltol in the mix. Will see how it wears. Ok, 20 mins later and the opening has gone, and I smell salty toffee. Really good! You need to smell the projection and not the skin or you can still pick up a bit of the herby quality that spoils it for me.

I can smell an overt amount of cloves mixed with quality rum and maple. Overly spiced. Very masculine. Not the smoothest blend. Another Clive that barely makes grade, considering the price.

Not really a fan of this. E Gourmande Oriental is a very thick gourmand scent that, for the most part, smells like maple syrup and cloves. It's really well blended, as all the notes blend seamlessly and really well with one another. If you try to really dissect the scent you can make out the boozy peach from the top notes and the vanilla and cinnamon from the base. Despite this, I don't think I like it. It's very strong and thick, so it's very cloying. I sprayed this one lightly and even then I could smell myself very strongly for hours and even ended up leaving a faint scent of this in my house, as it does project strongly. I might have to give this another chance during a cold winter day, but as it stands I don't really like smelling like maple syrup. This is the best Clive Christian in terms of performance overall, which is a shame because they have way better fragrances. Projection is strong but not room filling strong, sillage is very thick as I mentioned earlier. Longevity is very good, it's the next day and I can still smell it on my arms. I wish their Art Deco fragrances would perform like this, or maybe even their fresher scents like Iconic Masculine or Timeless.

I agree the notes are off. Trusting my nose I get a strong note of coffee and rum in the opening and it goes into clove with a hint of vanilla towards midlife. The end is sweet and I cannot tell you since it seems to never end :) - jokes aside this is a very good fragrance as far as longevity goes, and sillage... and quality. Scent: 7/10 Longevity: 10/10 Sillage: 10/10 Cost: 4/10 Overall: 7.75/10 A solid frag but for the mature and understanding crowd. I personally enjoy it very much.

Yeah, I really don't like this. I get clove, but moreover I get Raghba-esque vibes. It's not as sweet, but it's definitely as nauseating on me. The idea of not 'understanding' a scent is a totally fallacy to me - it smells revolting on my skin, I don't need to get anything else.

I left a negative review previously, but this one has grown on me. Maybe it’s just the fact that it is Christmas time and this scent goes perfectly with this time of the year. I think this fragrance gets bad reviews because Clive calls it “gourmand” and people think that means it’s supposed to smell edible. This doesn’t smell edible, but it smells like it’s made up of some edible ingredients. Does that make any sense at all? You get clove, orange spice, and dry woods, with smoke and a cotton floral candy vibe from the “I” release as well. It still isn’t something I need a full bottle of yet, but it is quickly getting to that status. This is a very good woody fragrance with spicy holiday elements. Genuinely only for cold weather use. If you even smell it in moderate or hot weather, you’ll hate it. Save your sample or bottle for cold weather only and for scenarios that require business casual and up.

Overly sweet cloying chemical candy fragrance. Repulsive for a man and unfortunately for me has nuclear performance. Might work for some women in the dead of the winter, but honeslty, I hope that for my woman never to smell like that. If that was Bogart to issue it, people would have said things like "synthetic smelling" or " chemical experiments gone bad". But obviously, since it's CC, people will pay big $ for it with a smile. Utter nonsense, and a school case of marketing. This is one of the very rare fragrances that gets a 'hate' vote from me. (and this comes from a cloves fan)

There is an essence of freshly nursed baby's breath that loudly underscores this entire scent the way a colicky baby loudly underscores the entire life of new parents. I love (my) kids, but I hate this! If that weren't here, this would actually be a bombastic AND delicious scent. Unfortunately, it's just bombastic. I'm gonna high-five myself for this discovery. This is so so Martian, completely out of this world!!! Many people talk that gourmand talk but how far are you willing to take it? There's more to life than Angel Man Pure Malt. This is no doubt an ancient biblical bouquet outfitted with all of the antiquated fragrance accords from the Good Book. There's a caveat to this lovefest: YOU MUST LIKE CLOVES. These ain't the same cloves found in grandma's kitchen. The spices here are beefed up in a literal sense to the point where the smokey flower buds smell like the glaze of bourbon chicken. To some, that description could be off-putting but I can guarantee that the world around you will smell like brown sugar and not like chicken. No rose, no problem. There's a lull effect you will experience which is provided by the cushioned, warm and buttery quality of sandalwood found throughout this 18 hour fragrance. The yellow floral produces what almost seems like a tropical agent with its bright sun-lit nature buoyant to the core. This is a much needed additive for a composition with a serious spice agenda. With a $395 dollar price tag, expect a limited amount of reviews. It will be interesting to see how this is received in the community. Hopefully, I've given you enough adjectives to run out and try one of the best gourmands in the past few years.

I'm sampling this now on my skin and I have to say it's one of the most unpleasant things I have ever applied. Look up the definition of scrubber in the dictionary and this pile of junk will rear it's ugly head. It's so damn strong and smacks you in the face with it's ugly dose of clove and oriental notes. Washed my hands three times and it seems to only get STRONGER. I'm literally in hell and can't escape. Never has a perfume made my head feel like it was being crushed by a vice grip. I'm hating every minute of this perfume as it dances around on my skin and clings to my nose. Please go away!! I'm dying of a cloying clove attack!!!! Gross! Please don't buy this and subject the human race to this stank.

I just received my CC E for Men Gourmand Oriental bottle today and like for every new perfume I buy, I let my wife try it first and give me her opinion. If the perfume is too vanilic she gets to keep it and if it's too woody, I get to keep it. Well, the moment she sprayed CC E on, she immediately said it smelled like By Kilian Black Phantom. Although I agree with her (we had to spray both on each arm), I have to say CC E is a stronger, if not a better version of By Kilian Black Phantom, so I'm keeping both :). Very nice fragrance indeed but if you already have Black Phantom, CC E might be redundant IMO

I agree with prevous comments that this is more opulent and complex version of Black Phantom. However, Black Phantom seemed pale, boring and cheap to me, while E for Men is sexy-gourmand beast. I don't know exactly why, but I see it as CC's Tobacco Vanille. It's not rich in coffee and vanille as it is in caramel and rum, so I find it pretty unique. In my opinion, this is such a beautiful scent, full-bottle worthy. Maybe I will add it to my collection, we'll see.

Autumnal Yankee Candle. Gingerbread cookies. Something like that. I now have a fragrance to wear at my next campfire... In all seriousness this is wretched. In fact, of the new C.L.I.V.E. collection only C and V are fit to wear in public. Nobody should be unwillingly subjected to L, I, or E. Edit: As you can see, some folks hate this and some love it. What is certain is that this is not a safe blind buy. This is an all-time top ten NOT safe blind buy...

-Definitely a fall/winter fragrance. Will be cloying in hot, humid weather. -With cloves and sandalwood in the top notes, this is reminiscent of fragrances from the house of Penhaligon’s. -Arabian vibes. -These spicy notes can typically nauseate, but surprisingly, it didn't make me gag upon sampling. -I picture a career woman in her late 30s wearing this on a business trip. -I would wear this, if not for the exorbitant price tag. -Not fbw. Best suited for the pros, I also agree that the notes here are wrong,There is a very strong creamy Vanilla/Opoponax ;Which dominates this fragrance for hours and hours, One spray lasts hours on skin and days on clothing, definitely a pass for me , Scent Strong/Too strong. may come off as strong as first but this really does reminisce of fall or autumn its really what you would picture of the leave turning orange and red but its mainly cuz of that clove and maple scent but a little bit of the dry down and manceration for a little this becomes really nice and probably a signature sent and it becomes sweeter.

Opens with a tsunami of clove and settles down to a black phantom type fragrance. Remains unique throughout the wear but I think my association with BP might be from a shared rum-praline accord. Great longevity (especially on clothes). I think it would be an interesting frag to have for cold weather, especially during the festive season.

Cocky, Loud, Classy, Unique. Think Chuck Bass from gossip girl this is what he would smell like i can imagine. A underrated masterpiece will always own this. A staple in my autumn/winter collection, the best spicy/boozy fragrance there is period! 10/10 NO 12/10

What a disgusting fragrance, smells cheap and artificial. Tried to wash the scent of my arm four times but it’s not coming off, sickly sweet cloying scent. Smells absolutely foul and cheap. Revolting even.

Clove heavy maple syrup. Very sweet and slightly Smokey underneath. Not getting any fruit. Unisex, masculine because of the smokey clove, feminine because of how sweet it is. Not at all overly masculine.

Super cloying and headache inducing this smells like pancakes with maple syrup on top. The scent screams rich and important but it is to rich and dense for my liking and extremely balsamic to my nose.

Luxurious clove, didn't like it at first, starts to like it by the time. For cold weather and special occasions.

Smells so similar to Kenzo Jungle L’Elephant! Delicious but save your money and opt for Kenzo
