The patchouli is a faint touch in the far back of the fragrance. The fragrance has a smooth but noticeable opening to dry down change, the opening favors the citruses and cardamom, at this point, the fragrance is very citrusy, sweet, and refreshing; towards the dry down, the citruses take a step down, the cinnamon and clove grow and lead the fragrance, finally, the sandalwood and labdanum develop to support the fragrance. Once Costume National Homme EDP has reached its full dry down, it can be summarized as a moderate projection, sweet, spicy, cinnamon, clove, cardamom, grapefruit, and sandalwood fragrance with woody accords. Spicy, Exotic, Contemporary Dry Sandalwood... This scent had me scratching my head for awhile, as the notes didn't seem accurate, but eventually it smelled like it should based on the notes. Opens with a burst of grapefruit & cardamom supported by multi-faceted bergamot, and already some licorice-y tones (possibly from patchouli) are swelling through. As it transitions to the heart, the cardamom is supercharged by a jolt of clove & cinnamon to become a spicy blend with a faint accent of thyme that's more often than not overwhelmed by the other spices. However, at the end of the day this scent is all about the sandalwood, with the other notes ultimately serving to enhance different facets of a dry sandalwood in all its multi-faceted glory. Like many dry sandalwood scents, this has the potential to pull dill, which initially filled me with disappointment, but as the bottle matured (a year or more) this gradually went away, culminating in an spicy, exotic, contemporary dry sandalwood that was worth the wait, and worthy of the signature of master perfumer Dominique Ropion: 1st wearing: dill pickle juice 2nd wearing: dill pickle 3rd wearing: fresh dill, coriander and wood 4th wearing: fresh coriander and sandalwood 5th wearing: fresh coriander cinnamon & sandalwood 6th wearing: cardamom, coriander, sandalwood 7th wearing: clove, cardamom, cinnamon, sandalwood This is targeted to men, and definitely leans masculine, but anyone who likes a dry sandalwood scent might like this. Overall it's a gorgeous spicy, exotic dry sandalwood scent that's worth a bit of a wait. Has excellent performance for year-round wear, but the spicy profile shines in cooler weather. It's become a love for me. Painfully becomes a 9 or 10/10. Enjoy!

Man I love this stuff, I'm definitely getting a full bottle soon. The weirdest thing about this fragrance is that it reminds me a bit of the vintage YSL M7. Sure people will call me crazy and even when I compare notes I don't see any resemblance either but hey .. it's my nose so suck it up. On my skin this is beautiful love child between M7 and figs. These two went on a date, had steaming erotic adventures and bottled up whatever sweat was still drying up on their bodies. Scent wise the combination of notes to me really provide a fig experience that is very similar to the Rituals brand fig home fragrance and body wash line but there is much more depth and raw power available. There is also plenty of warm sweetness thanks to the cinnamon but it's not sickeningly sweet, rather just the right amount to make the entire composition warm and inviting instead of harsh. Personally I assume I pick up the M7 vibe as my mind connects the sweet/medicinal aura due to the combination of cloves and labdanum blended in the entire composition. This shit is strong though and lasts forever, showering is sometimes not even good enough to remove it. 4 sprays and you're truly set for the day. In fact, your entire office will be set for the day. People around you will be even set for the entire day. Some of these people might say it's overpowering. Whatever, bask in it's glory or put vaporub under your nose 8/10

A supremely classy gentleman's fragrance. Starring spiced sandalwood and labdanum. Julius Caesar used to wear a fragrance made from cistus (labdanum), and he probably would've liked this. Most people seem to. My inexpert nose doesn't find the clove to be terribly pronounced - nothing like the original version of Jacomo by Jacomo for instance or Clive Christian's Chasing the Dragon Hypnotic - and almost like a "spice" accord - although it brings a subtly camphoraceous aspect that complements the cistus. Together, the cinnamon and clove contribute a warmth and a spiciness that enhances the sandalwood, giving CN Homme a vaguely Serge Lutens vibe. I also get the impression of something that reminds me of papyrus à la Gucci Pour Homme 2003 and Bentley Absolute but it's probably the labdanum, which also imparts a somewhat resinous depth and resonance. Intoxicating and somehow effervescent - every time I wear CN Homme I find myself sniffing my wrist to savour the effect, which is like a sensory roller coaster ride or an olfactory version of Bach's Toccata in D minor. Performance is above average, as is longevity. Overall a bewitching blend and a veritable crowd pleaser that elicits compliments from random strangers, infinitely versatile - as wearable for work as for play, on a date or to a funeral. A modern classic.

A gorgeous symphony of wood and spices. CN Homme is a minimalist yet beautiful scent. It is a spicy woody scent, made up of classic, warm, and edible cinnamon note, and a soft sandalwood note, both of which combine to give an incense-like smell. This smell is made spicier with cloves and cardamom, the latter of whom serves to also make the scent a bit powdery, & gives it an iris- or rum-like character. Warm, spicy, softly-woody, & cozy. It does smell like the known smells of V&R Spicebomb/Bvlgari Man In Black. However, CN Homme spicier, which gives more depth and character compared to the relatively-flatter other two.I find it also beautifully smoother. In fact, CN Homme came before both of them, so this is the OG. Personally, I like Spicebomb & MiB but they are not favorites of mine, except MiB Black Orient, which adds a beautiful oriental twist to the formula. However, I find myself in love with CN Homme. It is just richer and deeper. Being a natural-smelling fragrance, it is charming when smelled on a man. In this current time, CN Homme is not a very unique smell to wear but it is such a gorgeous, classic masculine scent that is worth at least trying. A mature, cool weather wear. CN Homme gets a "Love".

This relatively affordable scent has slowly crept into my top 10 list and I am still amazed at how much I am enjoying this. Costume National Homme follows the style of linear perfumery (as does CK one as an example, while smelling nothing like it) aka creating a beastly mega accord that smells perfectly arranged and very stable and then making it go on for hours and hours without it devolving and becoming a skin scent. CN Homme is exactly that, a very cleverly arranged composition of cinnamon, clove, cardamom, sandalwood, cedar and patchouli with just the right amount of vanillin and ambroxan in the base. Running through the whole thing is delicious raisin-like sweetness that links everything together with the creamy almost coconut like sandalwood compounds. The end result is a cross between a cardamom raisin bun and chai tea, sweet but not overindulgent. Very pleasant to wear and it strangely only gets smoother and richer with time. While it may not feel like a top-end fragrance in terms of quality or creativity it is such a pleasant experience that I keep on coming back to it, some times stopping to smell the atomizer and wondering why I didn't wear this instead of whatever I have on.

Getting drunk in the pantry among dried fruits and sweet spices. Quite a heady cocktail, and it's very potent, long-lasting, and quite the sillage monster. Maybe as you sober up after a few hours after application you get whiffs of the powdery stuff in there, but it's not dry, never dry in my opinion. It feels like a thick liquid, like a liquor that doesn't exist; I imagine something like the consistency of chilled limoncello - though this perfume is anything but chilly and has very little to do with citrusy freshness. No, this is at body temperature and can be seriously eroticized if you move and turn up the heat on it. I can't help it, but it makes me want to seduce someone when I wear it. No, not even that, let's be honest, I feel like I don't even have to seduce anybody when I wear it. A very special fragrance. And one of the very few which makes me feel I actually wear it, like a beautiful, tailored shirt in the Florence sunset. Edit: Just how strong is it? 22 hours later, after a full night's sleep, a shower, and the application of a different fragrance, I still catch very noticeable whiffs of it. This is not a perfume; it's a symbiont.

Gorgeous Smell, Nuclear Performance, Great Projection! Costume National Homme is my all time favourite fragrance for winter time, which presents niche quality with an affordable price. CN Homme includes lots of cinnamon and cloves. I think it also has a tiny vanilla notes, which appears at the end. The notes are amazingly blended and you cant stop smelling yourself. BE CAREFUL! This thing has insane projection and longevity. So, do not over use it. Otherwise, you will offend people easily. I apply 2 sprays on my sweaters the night before i wore them. Than, i apply just 2 sprays of my neck next morning. BOOM! I smell amazing and gets lots of complements without being offensive for the next +10 hours. I couldnt imagine someone, who use this gem in warmer seasons. NO GUYS! This thing is for winter. Topic is not debatable. Closed! One and only issue with this juice is, it does not change entirely. You smell nearly same during its lifetime. However, this is not a problem for a fragrance which can only be used just 2-3 months. Buy a 3.4 Oz bottle and i'll guarantee, you are gonna use this +5 years. Blind buy is safe for +25. Overall:9/10

It's not just about the exodus that is exorbitant or the longevity that is no longer part of you, it's just a pleasure to join you. It sings you on a holiday day, even if it is not, whether it snow and it's blizzard or even a sunny day, definitely a friend of hope you want to keep forever. It's a delicious breakfast that you do not have any more, and every time there's so many new things to discover and so much to tell. Fresh citrus notes from the opening where fresh and resistant grapefruit welcomes you, combines ingeniously with spices, where cinnamon and cardamom are the main actors, and the end is genius by adding sandalwood and especially due to labdanum that adds a gourmet note traces of plums, amber muscles and skin, pushing it towards a mysterious, luxuriant, elegance with a happy and tasty finish. Although it is similar to Amouage Man, Chanel Egoiste, I feel closer to Spice Bomb, but with different evolutions. @QuentinsBeach - Spot on. Exactly what I came here to type - I also get a tea note. I’m also getting a trace of mint. Both aren’t listed, so I wonder what’s contributing to that. This scent bangs. Tbh, I don’t enjoy it as much as the Parfum, but it’s still an outstanding drop. The projection is strong on my skin. Longevity is ridiculously good. When I wear a scent for the first time, I usually try and work out what scents I’m getting before I drop on here to see the notes broken down. Grapefruit ✅ Bergamot ✅ Cloves ✅ Cinnamon ✅ Sandalwood ✅ Patchouli ✅ Mint ❎ Tea ❎ I didn’t detect the remaining notes, but I’m still learning. Back to this scent. It opens with a sharp citrusy punch, before drying down to that creamy sandalwood, cloves and patchouli mix. Some similarities with the Parfum, but this projects more sharply. Probably a Friday office wear. Might be a little loud for the rest of the week if you’re surrounded by HR folk. Definitely a great date scent. Picked a 100ml bottle up in the sale for only $95 AUD, so it feels like I’ve done a bank job. More than happy with this. A fine drop.

Warmth and spice greets you with CoSTUME National Homme. I love how the initial opening which is all citrus and cardamom, eventually segues into cloves and cinnamon which comes off very natural. This fragrance is rich and the mid is where we get the spices and thyme harmonizing perfectly, which takes the fragrance someplace else (I keep looking for a proper description. I get something between the cardamom, cloves and thyme but I cannot call it boozy, so I will opt for a resinous accord). Eventually the spices simmer down and the sandalwood, labdanum and patchouli bring on some needed earthiness and a bit of leather and that resinous accord evolves into a coconut accord. CN Homme is a perfectly blended fragrance and is autumn and winter ready. This is for the 30 and up crowd and dresses up or down. CN Homme is perfect for sweaters and flannel and can be worn day or night. Give CoSTUME National Homme a few sprays when you want to smell and feel warm and cozy during those revolving holiday visits with family and friends.

A lovely mysterious aroma of tamed-spicy cloves, not shaving-cream type cloves with a very sweet cinnamon-not the spicy type and lovely sandalwood shining at the base.. I truly hate sandalwood in fragrance world, but here, well I learned how to respect it.. I have to admit that seeing the notes I expected a super spicy aroma like a cuury can or something, but surprisingly it is sweet and delicious and creamy.. I wonder how did they manage to make the spicy oils singing at this beautiful harmony! It is what's called ART! Also I swear I can smell a box of cigaretts kind of smell I wonder what is causing it! Totaly fell in love with it.. I hope that it won't be dicontinued nor reformulated! Oh the performance is great! Satisfying longevity and projection.. what a frag-lover would need more? Update: After trying it a second time: there's definately a peach note here! Or is the composition that gives a peach like note? And for the drydown: it is somewhat close to M7 of Yves Saint Laurent.. a myrrh-like note!!

Very well done. The two reviews below mine did a great/better job at explaining this one. It's not a young scent, it could be worn by anyone 30+. That being said, it's also not so mature that those of us in our 30's will feel like a grandpa. I do find this to be a modern fragrance, so don't be scared away by thinking it is too mature or dated by the note breakdown. I love the addition of cloves which can be too much for me sometimes, however, they did a great job here. It is not the same as Spicebomb, so don't get me wrong, but for those who may need a reference (as it is hard to find a store that carries it to sample for some of us): Spicebomb without the sweetness, more wood, and a bit more classed-up. Wood and Spices with a splash of grapefruit. Performance does very well. As far as seasons: Winter, Fall and early Spring. An awesome under the radar scent!

Although I adore cinnamon, the first time I smelled it I was overwhelmed by this spice and I didn't smell anything else. It seemed too simple and monochrome. After a few years I tried again and I appreciated it. I don't know what's happened but this time I could smell something else, like cloves and sandalwood (synthetic, of course, but very soft). It reminds me his majesty Egoiste, much less rough and balsamic, but the dejavu is there (if there is a closer perfume I haven't found it yet). In the end, it's ambery, almost a candied Winter pie. I like it more and more, that's strange 'cause it took me so long to appreciate it and now it's one of my favorites. I bought two 100ml bottles and that's happened with only one perfume. It lasts a lot on the skin and on clothes even more. Moreover, people nearby notice it, definitely, even outdoors.

This is such an underrated gem. I’ve tried this fragrance numerous times over the years and have finally purchased a travel-size bottle for a ridiculously cheap price. Homme is spicy, warm, cosy - yet clean. There is an underlying sweetness within this fragrance but it’s not sugary or ‘bubblegum’ sweet. This charismatic fragrance is very versatile; regarding not only when it can be worn, but also who can wear it. The quality is really good, too. The opening is intense (likeable, just really strong) but like most CN fragrances, the dry down eventually settles into an intoxicating scent that is such a pleasure to wear. The far dry down actually reminds me a little of the dry down of 1270 by Frapin. Not exactly alike, but a similar vibe. Definitely worth a try; I’ll be snapping up a 100ml bottle when I make a dent in my travel spray.

This is really a nice fragrance – I had the chance to buy a bottle at a discounted price and I took the chance and I blind bought it – this is really dry, spicy and woody – really masculine – I don’t know if women would find this sexy, my wife hasn’t smelled it yet – but on my own I enjoy it for 100% - I think many people who try this fragrance, at first sniff think this is something really new and afterwards try to remember what is similar to it and a lot of possibilities arise like spice bomb or Bvlgari Man in Black, Opium etc ... Dolce di Giorno I have never smelled so I cannot tell if it’s similar to this but in a way If you like fragrances like the Encre Noire series and maybe most specifically Extreme, this will be your thing – it doesn’t smell like it but I get the same vibe from it

The opening is intense. Cloves bro, cloves. Musc ravageur looks like a baby bunny compared to this. But - 10 minutes in, cinnamon. The cloves begin to take the backseat - and thank god - because it'd be a scrubber for me if that kept up! It's easy to see similarities between this and Soul (which I think is just as masculine) - but soul takes a turn with a honey-ish/oud-ish note(s), and seems to get stronger, while this calms down and becomes manageable. At any rate - this is niche quality. There is nothing designer about this (including the price)! I'm really surprised to see how many people like this, considering clove seems to be quite the polarizing note. This is a great smell - will be a frequent addition to my winter rotation. Can't wait to see what else this house has in store. 6/10

When I put this on, I couldn't help but think how gorgeous and familiar this was. I had to immediately come here to see what this was reminding me of and, while in the comments, more are saying Amouage's, for me, I got Dolce di Giorno Bois 1920 hands down. It's not even a little, its almost identical. I'm wearing this now, I had Dolce last year and I see, this came out years before Dolce. This is a great one, hands down. Can easily be worn in the Spring/Fall/Winter. I'd stay away from the summer for this. Can be done but works better in cooler weather. Spicy yea but softly done, along with the other notes. It's a beautiful flow all around. It's one of those you sniff and want to sniff again and again. I will be adding this to my permanent collection, it's so enjoyable.

This is what Chanel Egoiste wanted to be. Instead of smelling like an ashtray or potpourri gone wrong like Egoiste, Costume National Homme gives a proper potpourri effect. Sweet spices and seemingly more wood than the sandalwood list here in Fragrantica. Maybe the sandalwood was done differently as speculated in a post below. The only thing is I don't get anywhere near the eternal longevity and enormous sillage rated here. About 15 sprays on skin and clothes and 4 hours later it's a skin scent. The atomizer isn't the best. But all in all one of my favorites in a large collection. It's now my Christmas day scent, replacing Burberry London. Update 12/24/2024: wearing it this Christmas Eve day. Tomorrow I'll wear Tom Ford Tobacco Vanille as my Xmas day scent.
