Elan

This finessed aldehydic floral seems to be one that history forgot, and it's a shame, as beyond what seems like the typical shimmer and sparkle of its opening, underpinned with the usual soapy-green and crisp-floral articulation, there's a splendid warmth to Élan. Sandalwood and nitromusks, sweetened with a hint of ethyl vanillin and tonka bean are welcome diversion; remnants of the aldehydes and wonderfully vague white florals contrasting with this dry down—it tickles my brain. I just want to veg out and spend time in this magical place. Lounging idly and just taking in a perfume is the best...

I love this! Close relative of Lady Stetson, there's a similar hint of sweetness behind a heavy curtain of aldehydes. Transparent white florals and a big dose of green notes and oakmoss. Carnation is there with powdery spiciness. I love this. (I love Lady Stetson, too.)

I love this in the parfum de toilette, first wore it in Winter 1974 in Montreal so it always brings back that special time & place. A very sophisticated and well constructed fragrance.

Coty Élan (1968) – Wear Test Review. My bottle is a Spray Mist Parfum de Toilette from the first release of 1968. I don’t know if this fragrance was reformulated during its existence. My bottle is a clear glass column with a shiny embossed metal cap and Coty’s logo on the top. Élan opens with clean, soapy aldehydes that are smooth and well-behaved rather than screechy. The bergamot and green notes are present early but restrained, giving a fresh, polished opening without turning sharp or bitter! As it develops, the green notes make their exit and a soft floral heart lifts—rose and muguet are the most noticeable, with carnation gradually coming forward and adding a gentle clove-like spice. The heart transitions into a light, airy powderiness typical of late-1960s Coty. Orris smooths the florals into a blended bouquet rather than distinct soliflores. The overall impression is elegant and composed, never dramatic. In the drydown, Élan becomes increasingly powdery and cool, settling into sandalwood and clean musk. The sandalwood can briefly show a familiar vintage “pickle” facet before softening into dry woods. Tonka, if present, is extremely subtle and does not add noticeable sweetness or warmth from my perception. This remains a clean, fresh, skin-adjacent scent to the end. Élan is not a bold or sensual perfume. Despite the name, it favors restraint over bravado. It’s a polished, wearable floral-musk with a powdery finish—more refined than emotional, more graceful than seductive. Comparisons: Élan sits firmly among late-1960s “clean elegance” perfumes. It is cooler and more restrained than amber-leaning classics, softer and more powdery than structured green florals, and drier and less spicy than the floral-chypres of the era. Overall, it reflects Coty’s late-1960s aesthetic: powdered florals with a restrained warmth underneath—elegant, clean, and understated throughout. As for my personal taste, these types of ‘cool’ fragrances are not my preference; I prefer warm, spicy scents. But I recognize that this composition is quite lovely, and wouldn’t hesitate to wear it to a brunch or other type of daytime gathering!

opens with huge aldehydes and oakmoss then the lovely bright soapy florals come to the top and some sandalwood and musk
