White Rice

I believe the surest alternative to experience d'Annam's creation is to take a plunge into a bag of uncooked jasmine rice and let the perfumed starches meld with your skin. White Rice exudes a subtle sophistication that’s understated and precise. The rice accord opens big without being overbearing, setting the stage for jasmine and orris to linger. The tonka bean and white musk are delicate but serve to restrain the florals from reigning soapy or predictable– as so many jasmine fragrances can be. This eau parfum is lovely and intelligent— appropriate for work but also a first date. I’d wear this to a wedding and a funeral— it’s gorgeous and unique without trying to be the center of attention. My only qualm is that I wished the rice was a little stronger and stuck around a little longer. The way the rice is framed in this fragrance is so addictive and comforting. I feel like I’m in the home of Sejima or Kusama— creative, clean, chaotic, but considered. As much as this is, in fact, a “White Rice” perfume, it’d probably be more accurate to call this concoction “Jasmine Rice” or “Fragrant Rice”. I’m caught between the sensation of the uncooked rice itself and the powdery fragrances topically applied to the grains. I like the ambiguity; I like that I’m left wanting more. The kernel of this fragrance is undoubtedly Southeast Asian diaspora. You can sense a longing tied to a childhood memory-- a memory of “home” frozen in time and space. I doubt European houses could find their way to the boldness and self-effacing dialectic inherent to Eastern cultures that shows up in this fragrance. White Rice is iconic and diminutive at once. It beckons attention through achievable perfection but engineers smallness to avoid criticism. As a sexual and ethnic minority, it’s such a mind fuck to experience a harmony with my inner and outer worlds– and from a spirit in a glass bottle nonetheless. This was my first blind buy. Right out of the package, I honestly couldn’t smell a thing. After letting the bottle rest a few days, I was so surprised how much I loved this and how flattering the floral sillage felt. (And what a relief!) It’s an incredible fragrance to layer with others, but is no less stunning on its own. I checked d'Annam's website recently, wanting to imbibe on the other fragrances in this collection— to no surprise, everything is sold out. Luckyscent advertises that there will be a restock in May— I really hope so; after being so impressed with White Rice, I’m itching to try out Pho Breakfast. I’m also seriously considering buying a second bottle because I don’t know what I’ll do when this one runs out. I will be keeping a close eye on this humble Vietnamese NYC-based house.

White Rice is an olfactory cousin to Glossier You and Sonic Flower. All are beautiful musky iris fragrances with enough differences to result in unique wear experiences. White Rice has, to me, the perfect amount of sweetness (similar to Sonic Flower, but less than GYou). The use of orris differentiates White Rice as the more refined and less sharp fragrance of the three aforementioned. The orris doesn't overpower the wear. In fact, nothing is overpowering. The notes harmoniously work together. The lactonic accord adds smoothness and comfort to White Rice that **cannot be matched!** by the cousins. The creaminess doesn't take it in a gourmand direction, but softens the notes, particularly the iris. Comparatively, I applaud this fragrance for what it has and what it doesn't have (pepper notes, like GYou). Although Glossier You and White Rice are interchangeably my top choices, it's only so due to price points. GYou is more reasonable, which gives it an edge. However, White Rice is the smoothest and most lovely wear, which gives it an edge. It comes down to money vs experience and at any time one may be more important to me. I invested in a bottle of GYou, but after I'm finished, I may switch to White Rice. For what it's worth, Sonic Flower is my least favorite because its sharp iris note.

Interestingly, I started with a 1ml dabber decant of White Rice and absolutely loved it. The projection and longevity are definitely poor, but the starchiness and muskiness are so cozy that it makes up for it. When I recently tried a 5ml spray decant from the same site to see if I wanted to commit to a full bottle, though, I immediately noticed the Father Figure comparisons and synthetic notes others had complained about--almost no starchiness, just generic musk with some floral notes. I wondered if the difference was due to heat exposure during shipping, but after a week resting in a cool, dark spot, the 5ml spray still smells different than the dabber when I compare them side-by-side. I've never noticed this kind of difference when moving from a dabber to a spray with other fragrances. I still love White Rice, so I'm planning to try a rollerball decant next to see if that format preserves the starchy top notes.

I am in love with this perfume. I was on a mission to find my signature scent, and as someone who grew up with rice as a staple in my diet I was determined to find a distinctly ricey scent without much disruption. I almost did not want to believe the marketing until I sampled it in a perfumery in London. It's fragrant, starchy and powdery like rice. Yet, despite the warmth the starchiness gives, the smell evokes the colour lilac in my mind? It's like a bag of raw, uncooked rice that's exemplified by the other notes instead of overwhelmed. I believe the Orris is what evokes the colour lilac to me, but it is wonderful, delicate and a fantastic signature scent. If you want a scent that is bold and long lasting, this is not for you but it is everything I was looking for. She also layers wonderfully with other perfumes!

Stunning and ethereal. On first spray, it's like sticking your nose into a bag of uncooked rice: powdery, starchy, effortlessly light. But as it dries down, more of a woody, creamy sweetness starts to bloom. The tonka really shines on my skin, and I sometimes forget I'm wearing this until I get a waft of something sweet, warm, and cozy, and realize it's me. The powderiness sticks around the whole time, but it's much more muted after about 15-20 minutes of wear. I wouldn't say this is blind buy safe but if you love a rice note or a powdery iris/orris, it's absolutely worth a sample.

This is my Empty-Bottle Follow up Review: Okay, okay, she evokes a particular memory for me of my older sister in the 90's. Mind you, she's 10 years older than me and GORGEOUS. I was reminded of the way I thought growing up would feel. Like growing up, falling in love, becoming a woman; all of that is wrapped up in this memory. Definitely NOT a gourmand. Don't come around here looking for something sweet and savory. She smells musky and milky smooth in that way that reminds me of cocoa butter. Highly recommend for those who like clean (not laundry) and musky (like skin).

wow :'-) i had such an emotional reaction smelling this - this smells exactly like my best friend's house growing up. she passed away a few years ago but the opening starchiness of toasted rice followed by a comforting cloud of rice cooker steam + linen-y skin scent just brought me back there with all my happy memories. not too foody surprisingly, and the savory intro develops into a beautiful, fuzzy, barely sweet almost motherly skin scent. smells like how a big cream-colored cashmere sweater looks. i put it on before bed and it's still there when i wake up.

This is a really nice soft, sweet pleasant musk. I love the bit of the rice in the scent as it keeps it a little different than other musks I love. It doesn't beat Musk Therapy or Musk K but it's a great easy scent. I bought the full bottle and no regrets though I'm trying to simplify and not feel like I need five versions of a nice musk and may not repurchase. But who knows; it's such an easy wear it's a good one to keep on hand too.

I came back to this after dismissing it for a couple of years and am enjoying it immensely. It’s a powdery soft and cozy bedtime scent for me. I can pick up all the notes listed, and the addition of pandan brings me back to my time in Thailand, which I love. I struggle with musks going detergent on me, so when I find a nice and clean musky scent that doesn’t go screechy Tide on me, I celebrate.

It’s a beautiful scent that I find to be very calming. It’s musky and “rice” like but in a soft and pleasant way. I’m not sure how well it projects or longevity as I only have a sample of it so I can’t comment on if it’s worth the price but if you like soft skin scents that are relaxing and inoffensive, I think you’d enjoy this. If you’re looking for a beast mode perfume, this isn’t it.

I love this one but I don't have much to say about it. Creamy, butter soft orris root is the face White Rice. Most prominent, bright off the top and smooths into a warm skin scent. Have your nose on the spot long enough and you'll find quiet, subtle, toasted rice. While I do wish the rice was a bit louder, its overall elegant, beautiful and well crafted. The ultimate comfort fragrance.

Right away I get an intense rice and orris root that is so comforting. There are some light florals that come through after the initial spray. Unfortunately does not last at all, I can barely smell anything after an hour which is genuinely worse than most body sprays. Still, I can't help but spray this on my sheets when I'm getting ready for bed, such a calming and pleasant smell

Didnt get the hype at first. Wore it a second time and now im in love. That tonka really sneaks up and its a beautiful blend of notes with an excellent realistic rice note. the rice note reminds me of papier by diptique. that paper like vibe almost (thats just me). Also, I know alot of folks say its unisex.. but on me, it smells more masculine. in a good way

Although I find L’eau Papier by Diptyque to smell closer to actual rice, I love how soft and powdery White Ride by D’annam is! If anyone is selling their bottle let me know :) I’m also open to trading for it Edit: after smelling my sample again, I think I know why I love this so much! It’s more of a orris fragrance than rice, and I looove orris lol

I love this cozy sweet musk. It's a perfect bedtime scent or just lazy movie days. I love the rice note and just find this an easy reach. It's light - which means I'd love it a little stronger as I always do when I love a scent. But it's not really necessary. I can appreciate as a skin scent and smell my own wrist for a 'hit'. ;)

Well, this scent smells exactly how you’d think it would. It’s absolutely divine. I am a sucker for rice scents and D’Annam delivered. It’s cozy, comforting, warm, and savory. There’s also something almost creamy or milky about it; it’s genuinely a fantastic fragrance. I would love a full bottle of this. It’ll be on my wishlist.

This smells like if I put a bit of laundry detergent in my rice cooker. Very clean scent without smelling too "fresh" which I despise. Sits very close to the skin to the point I am sure nobody else has even smelled this perfume on me :P but I dont mind that. Its a perfect wrist perfume for a dopamine hit at my desk job

I tried this on one wrist, L'eau Papier on the other - and I liked this one more. It's a bit fluffier and sweeter to me, a bit less... skin, maybe? This is perfect for any day, any season, any moment. I often wear it to bed because it's just so cozy. Longevity is great for such a subtle scent, projection is intimate.

Reminds me of a past memory with my aunt in her Honda Accord, listening to Feist, and driving along the road with wheat farms and honeysuckle in the clean air. This isn't something I would wear casually, as I usually have on a bright and fruity scent, but I will say it is certainly special.

This scent smells like either arroz con leche or coquito being made in another room, in the early morning or at bedtime, 😢 its very soft and creamy and oh so comforting! It sits very close to the skin, just how this perfume sits close to my heart 😭💖 10/10 very beautiful and lovely!!

This smells like uncooked rice and iris when you first spray it. It’s very powdery and light. Once it dries down the jasmine note comes forward and combines beautifully with the powdery rice. It smells like floral scented clean linens with some soft powdery rice to me. 8.5/10

i’m obsessed with rice fragrances and this one is so well-blended! the combination of rice and orris make it very special - skinlike, but also very sensual. love it so much! the opening reminds me of l’eau papier from diptyque, but this one is more creamy and rich.

Yeah I love this. The orris is very prominent and makes it very comforting, and it's like you have a bowl of fresh flufiy white rice in front of you. Everytime I smell orris I think of Glossier You. This is cozy and musky and smells like a hug on a cold day. 8.5/10

A very intimate and elegant scent. Subtle but not faint. Great for layering to add depth to other fragrances. On my skin, it turns sour and isn't very pleasant, but on my clothes it lasts a really long time and the scent becomes rounder without turning sour.

It opens smelling like fragrant rice, but that fades quite quickly. After it dries down it smells powdery, musky, and slightly floral. It reminds me of other fragrances that are ‘skin based’, and it’s a great choice if you want something very intimate. 9/10

This is so so good. It reminds me of smelling expensive face creams my mom used to have as a kid. If you’re looking for something bold this is not it tho, it’s very subtle. The way it dries down reminds me of G Harajuku Lovers.

I absolutely adore this one. it’s pillowy soft, fluffy, cozy rice/pandan top. the orris kind of sits in the corner of the fragrance, i get more jasmine heart notes. it’s very raw and the ideal skin/layering scent. Delicious!

im obsessed with rice notes so i’m already predisposed to love this, but it’s truly very good. comforting and inoffensive. it smells familiar and inviting. slightly sweet and sort of smoky rice with a nice musky dry down

This is a lovely skin musk with a twist, one of my favorites in this category. I really enjoy both the rice and the powdery notes, everything is very elegantly done. A great daily reach, planning to buy a full bottle.

Not sure that’s exactly how rice smells but it’s very powdery. I didn’t have high hopes but I really love it. The first few minutes it is nearly identical with L’Eau Papier and the drydown is Molecule 01.

I was told it smells a bit like a carpet shop. But as for me after 1-2 hours of wearing the smell reminds very much of Molecule perfume - maybe a bit more powdered and sweet, but otherwise very similar.

I like the way it settles as an intimate sightly sweet rice treat but I wish the opening lasted a bit more, big fan of the rice hay scent hitting your nose as soon as you put this on.

Warm, cozy. Ricey. Papery. DO NOT TEST THIS ON PAPER. This scent gets 10x better on skin, this is where you will find the rice note. This is a beautiful scent, extremely comforting.

I don’t know how to explain it other than by saying she is that girl. I don’t know if you can really understand a rice fragrance without smelling this one, she’s the essential text.

on paper it smells like straight jasmine rice, but on my skin it has as sweet - powdery warmth to it! i wish it had more of that rice scent on my skin but honestly i dont mind hehe

This is so simple but so good. Paper like comforting scent, almost like a rice pastry but without the sweetness. Very wearable and likeable, good for morning or evening.

I think it's softer and sweeter version of leau papier by Diptyque....it doesn't have that heavy opening...leans bit more feminine...still prefer Diptyque tho...9/10

generic woody musk from the bottle but on my skin it makes me feel like im wearing freshly laundered clothes and taking out a bowl of leftover rice from the fridge

Ok...it does smell just like fresh steamed rice. I had to put it on my skin to get the real smell. In the vial it just smells vaguely powdery and a bit like men's cologne. I put it on a tissue and was instantly reminded of something very specific. For me, it is a travel scent. You wear it when you are not to stay somewhere for very long. I have stayed in foreign hotels that smell like this, airports that smelled like this, British friends I met at sleepaway camp and then never spoke to again. The intimacy of a different world, like wearing someone else's clothes for a night. I think this scent can be comforting. It is completely inoffensive, familiar yet unique, not at all intrusive. I would wear it to a business meeting where I am never going to see any of those people again but maybe I want them to remember me. Or if I am in between places, catching a flight, taking a taxi, this perfume would make me feel more confident in the every day cross overs with strangers. If I smelled it on a stranger myself, it would linger in the back of my mind for some time. It is maybe even a good scent for visiting extended family that you don't often see and you want to keep it impersonal but not cold. Of course, I feel all that, then I remember that it just smells like rice. Better yet the memory of rice. I think if you want to feel more rice than airport, you should mix with another scent, I'm thinking Fresh Cream by Philosophy, would smell exactly like a rice pudding.

A soft rice-milk musk surfaces first, and within seconds it shifts into something gently nutty; a transition I adored. A bold orris sits right at the center of this move. Sesame isn’t listed, but I unmistakably get a lightly toasted, nutty facet; for some this might even read as a subtle popcorn effect. That nutty effect is most vivid in the heart, but toward the drydown it settles into a soft musk: powdery, milky, clean. The phase-to-phase “playfulness” fades, and the scent finds its shape. As for the comparisons I’ve seen: I wear Papier, and while the musk might vaguely echo it, Papier’s peppery-mimosa edge is far stronger. Father Figure only comes to mind in the very last stretch, and only in the skin-musk aspect. In short, this fragrance feels unique; some of the comparisons seem a bit stretched. I like it. Somewhat sharp, realistic rice grain scent. I've worked around raw grains, and the best way I can put this is that this scent is the rice grain itself, the cloth bag holding the rice, and the wooden box holding the bag holding the rice all in one. Really addictive opener that dries down into an elegant musky floral. It's a fascinating transformation to pay attention to, a warm pastoral perfume turning into something more mature and noctural (Think being in bed, draped in white furs, lots of lace doilies and maybe a few candles...). The shame is that this transformation isn't as prolonged as it should be. I would love for it to really last from morning to night, and have a stronger projection, but it sadly doesn't.

I like this one, I’ve been wearing it to bed and really enjoying it. I finished a 50 ml and because I have so many similar fragrances I won’t be repurchasing this one (at least not for the foreseeable future). L’eau Papier is a bit “spicier” (not exactly the right description, but it has more of a personality, more of a kick to it that makes me enjoy it more generally but not for bed). White Rice is the perfect wind down at the end of the day, comforting scent. Now that it’s done I’m wearing You Doux to bed and although I wouldn’t say they smell alike, they do share that comforting element that makes them both very likable fragrances.
