Sea Fever

I’ve enjoyed quite a few offerings from Darren Alan over the years, so when he released an aquatic fragrance I was genuinely excited to see where he’d take it. After wearing Sea Fever on and off for the past couple of months, I can confidently say this is a solid release. The opening is clean and refreshing, led by bergamot and salt accords. After about only five minutes or so, you start to get orange blossom and neroli, giving it a fresh citrus floral profile with a slightly soapy, polished vibe. One thing I’ve learned over the years after trying a handful of his fragrances is that Darren is a big fan of white florals, and quite frankly why wouldn’t he be? He blends them beautifully, and Sea Fever is no exception. This fragrance is fairly linear from the opening, but a few hours in you do start to notice a soft, watery floral ambergris musk nuance coming through. It’s subtle, smooth, and never weird or off putting. Nothing dramatic, just a gentle evolution that keeps it interesting. What really stands out to me is how wearable this is. You could wear Sea Fever just about anywhere, at any time, and you’ll smell good. It’s very polite, easygoing, and feels perfectly unisex, sitting comfortably in that clean, effortless space where no note or style dominates. One comparison that pops into my head practically every time I wear this is Sailing Day by Maison Margiela. Sea Fever doesn’t smell extremely similar to it or anything, but it shares a very similar airy, light, refreshing, unisex aquatic feel. If you enjoy the clean, breezy character of Sailing Day, there is a good chance you will appreciate what Sea Fever is doing as well. That said, if you are looking at notes on this perfume such as seaweed, ambergris, and driftwood and expecting bold iodine, brine, or crashing ocean spray, this is not quite that. Sea Fever smells more like standing on a breezy coastline in clean clothes rather than wet rocks or salty sea air. That is not a negative, just something worth mentioning so expectations are set correctly. All told, Sea Fever is another strong offering from Darren Alan that feels thoughtfully composed, highly wearable, and easy to appreciate. It may not chase extremes, but it does not need to. This is the kind of fragrance you reach for often, and in the end, that says more than anything else.
