Today's review marks my return to the house of Day Three, beginning with Desert Rain. My first experience with the brand came through Ambar Dominicano, a fragrance that thoroughly impressed me with both its originality and exceptional craftsmanship, ultimately earning a permanent place in my collection. That first introduction left me with high expectations, not only because of the quality of the fragrance itself, but because it demonstrated Day Three's ability to tell a compelling story through scent while maintaining outstanding wearability. Desert Rain appears to pursue an entirely different artistic direction. Rather than centering itself around warm amber and rich sweetness, this composition seeks to recreate one of nature's most distinctive and fleeting experiences: the arrival of rainfall across an arid desert landscape. Built around an unusual desert rain accord supported by fresh aromatics, green tea, papyrus, and soft woods, the fragrance promises an atmospheric journey that favors realism and texture over conventional mass appeal. After the remarkable first impression Day Three made with Ambar Dominicano, I'm eager to see whether Desert Rain can demonstrate that the house's success wasn't limited to a single standout fragrance. The question is whether this ambitious concept can translate into a compelling and wearable composition, or if its highly atmospheric inspiration ultimately proves more interesting as an idea than as a fragrance. Let's find out whether Desert Rain continues Day Three's impressive momentum or becomes the first stumble in what has so far been a very promising catalog. Opening: The opening is fresh, ozonic, and woody. The primary notes I get are cactus blossom, the desert rain accord, olibanum, and woody notes, with the cactus blossom and desert rain leading the composition. The cactus blossom immediately introduces a fresh, watery, green floral accord that feels more like dewy petals suspended in cool morning air than a traditional floral bouquet. Following closely behind is the desert rain accord, presenting as a beautifully realized blend of mineralic freshness, damp earth, cool air, and rain-soaked stone. While it certainly evokes aspects of petrichor, it stops short of becoming a literal recreation of freshly fallen rain, working with the cactus blossom to capture the broader atmosphere of a desert landscape transformed by a passing storm. The olibanum settles just beneath these accords, contributing a bright resinous quality accompanied by a subtle mineralic smokiness. It reminds me somewhat of the olibanum used in Boss Bottled Elixir, though here it feels considerably lighter and more atmospheric. Finally, the woody notes establish a dry cedar-like framework that quietly supports the composition without drawing attention away from its more unusual centerpiece. I also detect flashes of tart bergamot and just a touch of warm spice from the nutmeg lingering in the background. The result is an opening that remains remarkably faithful to the fragrance's name, immediately transporting me to the image of cool rain falling across a sunbaked Middle Eastern desert. Dry Down: The dry down remains ozonic, mineralic, and woody. The primary notes I get are the desert rain accord, sandalwood, woody notes, and olibanum, with the desert rain and sandalwood taking center stage. As the fragrance develops, the cactus blossom gradually fades away, allowing the desert rain accord to become the unmistakable focal point. Interestingly, it becomes denser and more atmospheric with time, placing greater emphasis on its watery, earthy petrichor character while introducing an increasingly pronounced mineralic quality that enhances the impression of damp stone and cooled desert terrain. Following behind is the sandalwood, bringing its signature creamy woodiness and soft powdery texture, which gently smooths the fragrance without disrupting its atmospheric identity. The woody notes continue providing a dry cedar-like foundation, reinforcing the structure established during the opening, while the olibanum quietly retreats into the background, offering occasional wisps of bright resinous smoke. The result is a dry down that leans even further into the narrative suggested by the fragrance's name, becoming more immersive and artistic as the hours pass rather than settling into a conventional woody base. Performance: The initial projection within the first hour of wear is very strong, comfortably extending beyond six feet. The sillage closely follows suit, leaving behind a clearly noticeable scent trail that remains assertive without becoming overwhelming. After approximately four hours, the projection settles only slightly to around five to six feet, while the scent trail continues to be easily perceptible. It isn't until roughly the seven to eight hour mark that the fragrance begins to draw in more noticeably, projecting to approximately arm's length as the scent trail gradually fades to a faint but detectable presence. Desert Rain officially becomes a skin scent shortly thereafter, demonstrating very respectable technical performance, particularly for a composition built around such fresh and atmospheric ideas. When to Wear: Desert Rain is one of those rare fragrances that feels genuinely seasonless, making it equally appropriate throughout the year during both the day and evening. That versatility stems less from its note profile and more from the concept it explores. Rain falling across an arid desert isn't inherently tied to any particular season, allowing the fragrance to feel equally believable regardless of the weather outside. In terms of occasions, I find Desert Rain best suited for casual wear, relaxed weekends, and even professional office environments where its refined, unobtrusive character can be appreciated without overwhelming those nearby. However, its quiet atmospheric nature doesn't quite align with the expectations of formal occasions or special events, where a fragrance with greater richness or presence would likely feel more appropriate. Blind Buy: Desert Rain is not what I would consider a safe blind buy. While it never becomes particularly challenging or difficult to wear, it is clearly designed as an artistic interpretation of an idea rather than a broadly commercial crowd-pleaser. Most people will likely agree that it smells pleasant, but appreciating the fragrance and wanting to own an entire bottle are two very different things. Its emphasis on atmosphere over conventional mass appeal makes it the kind of fragrance that deserves to be experienced on skin before making a purchasing decision. Final Verdict: Desert Rain offers a fascinating interpretation of a profile that, while familiar to fragrance enthusiasts, remains surprisingly uncommon throughout the industry. Whenever I think of fragrances inspired by rain or petrichor, my mind immediately goes to Le Labo's Baie 19 and, to a lesser extent, Louis Vuitton Orage. Baie 19 fully commits to recreating the unmistakable smell of petrichor, making me feel as though I'm standing in the middle of a thunderstorm. Orage takes that same inspiration and filters it through Louis Vuitton's signature luxurious polish, creating something considerably more approachable and traditionally wearable. Desert Rain comfortably occupies the space between those two philosophies while carving out an identity of its own. Rather than pursuing a hyper-realistic petrichor accord, Day Three broadens the concept into something more environmental. The addition of cactus blossom, mineralic desert air, dry cedar, soft sandalwood, and whispy olibanum transforms the fragrance into an immersive landscape rather than simply the smell of rainfall itself. Throughout the wear, I found myself thinking less about individual notes and more about the scene the fragrance was creating, and I believe that's exactly what Day Three intended to accomplish. Equally impressive is the restraint shown throughout the composition. It would have been easy for Desert Rain to become an abstract art piece that sacrificed wearability in pursuit of realism, but Day Three strikes an excellent balance between atmosphere and practicality. The fragrance remains highly wearable while still delivering a concept that feels genuinely distinctive, and its solid performance avoids the technical shortcomings that often accompany fresher, more atmospheric compositions. Ultimately, I think Desert Rain is an excellent fragrance and another strong demonstration of Day Three's creativity as a house. It successfully captures a unique environment without sacrificing elegance or wearability, and I can easily see it becoming a standout addition to many collections. For me personally, however, it fills a role that is already occupied by Baie 19. While the two fragrances certainly approach the concept from different angles, they satisfy a similar desire within my collection, and I simply don't see myself reaching for both often enough to justify owning each of them. For that reason, I'll be passing on a bottle of Desert Rain; not because it falls short, but because I already own the fragrance that best fulfills this particular niche in my collection. I get an authentic pine scent that triggered my olfactory memory of the Butterfly Trail on Mt. Lemmon outside of Tucson. On the trail you start at a higher elevation above the Sonoran Desert where the air is cool, resinous, and tinged with pine which is just like Desert Rain’s crisp opening of juniper and bergamot. That early freshness has a similar “clean altitude” feel. As you descend into the mixed high arid desert mountain ecology, the sage, cactus blossom, and papery dryness of sun-warmed grasses start to mix with the cooler mountain greens from above. I occasionally get a whiff of sage and papyrus. I have not detected the petrichor-like Desert Rain accord, but my body chemistry has its off days. I'm working from home alone today, so I'm unsure of the sillage and projection. The first few hours are pleasant and I will likely add a full bottle to my collection. I may wear this out mountain biking this weekend in the Santa Catalinas. Does that sound odd? It really shouldn't. Mountain biking is already about engaging all your senses like feeling the terrain, reading the light, smelling the shift in air as you descend. Desert Rain may act like an olfactory soundtrack, keeping that storm rolling in over dusty terrain vibe going even if you’re just doing a quick Saturday morning loop before it hits triple digits. 30 November 2025 - PLEASE create an extrait because it's barely a skin scent within an hour despite applying on top of jojaba oil and ScentInvent's Linger.

TLDR: I LOVE THIS! So my favorite kind of weather is always and has always been rainy/gloomy...and I find myself overly critical of any fragrance that claims to have a petrichor accord. So naturally I was excited yet skeptical to test this one out. I ordered a sample rather than a full bottle really just to check it out. Day Three has a good track record with my nose and skin chemistry and I figured a sample was the safest bet. Maaaaan 😳 My first thought after spraying this was "they did it!...how did they do it???" The on skin experience is so familiar...not of another fragrance but moreso relaxing on my porch in the rain with nice cup of tea. It takes me to some lush spa retreat in the middle of the desert and the goal is to relax, recharge, and reset. Its truly a meditative and calming fragrance The citrus is subdued. The papyrus isnt overpowering. The leather is a whisper in the background. Silent Rescue is my all time favorite from the house...but this one gives it a run for its money (and it's not discontinued so I can wear this more often). This is airy enough to wear in the high heat and I think it'll be strong enough to wear in the cold. Year round reach in my opinion. Its classy enough to be a signature scent and, while it's unisex, to my nose it leans more masculine. I highly encourage at least a sample, but I warn you because once I smell it you'll need a full bottle

This starts with a beautiful the citrus opening. That fades away fairly quickly, and it transitions into a very light floral, which I believe would be the cactus blossom. The notes are really blended, so well, it's hard to pick apart exactly what's coming through. This very fresh opening could be the calming clean rain that you'll pick up. I don't pick up a very distinctive leather. I just think it's there in the back as a supportive note or more of a texture. That being said on my skin, it transitioned into the beautiful, ever so slightly creamy sandalwood. This is a very top tier sandalwood. You'll know the quality on your skin. I do pick up a cedar. Maybe a red cedar?? After a couple hours it becomes a very distinctive woody fragrance on my skin. I do actually live in a desert. So this is going to work very well. I think this really leans more masculine and would be for the rough rugged cowboys out here in the desert. That being said, you can go from the white t shirt at work to transitioning very well into the evening dressed up. I always recommend that you sample first. Give this a try. A very unique, airy, slightly sweet scent that has grown on me a lot since getting a sample. Shout out to Equality Fragrances for talking about this first and inviting the perfumer for a Q&A. The reminds me section is all off but if I were to compare what it feels like as a scent, it gives me the same feel as Speed Legends by Ex Nihilo and Sultani by Arabian Oud. Not clones or anything of the sort since that word gets thrown out a lot but it just gives me the same feel if that makes sense. I could own this and the other two and it wouldn't be redundant in my wardrobe. However, I wouldn't own Speed Legends and Sultani at the same time because of how similar they are. Desert Rain is very unique yet extremely wearable. Will have a full bottle soon. It also for some reason has an aroma that reminds me of sugar cane plants. Specifically when the stalks/bamboo is cut and extracted to get the juice out. Puts me in the mood for summer

Easy reach. Easy buy. These Day Three scents smell best on skin. Last forever on clothes. This one is a super fresh scent. Just superbly fresh and clean. Underneath thr freshness you can smell a slight unusual floral note (cactus blossom) a slight clean earthen note (leather). You are not going to choke anyone out with this one. Id recommend using this scent in any season with maybe the exception being winter. Use liberally. Price is decent. I have a few day 3 scents in full bottle and testers..for the warmer weather this and Bani are quite lovely.. This is decidedly unisex and quite frankly, understated. Great composition! Overall:4.45 Lasts 7+ hours on skin Layered with bani incidentally and it because a fruity fresh that i loved even more! Great sillage!

There is so much to love in this fragrance. It’s floral, herbal, sweet, and earthy. Not super sweet, there’s just this very light hint of sweetness. It’s very well composed. They did a great job with it. When first sprayed you get the florals and herbs, I don’t get strong bergamot, I think it’s just there to pull the tea and herbs together, which it does well. Leather is listed as a base note, but there’s no trace of leather as it dries, I think it was used it to bring out the sweetness and woodiness you smell in the air in the Arizona desert after it rains. But the sandalwood and petrichor is there with that hint of sweetness and earthiness. They put a lot of thought into the exact smell they were going for and it shows. It’s beautiful and an easy wear.

Desert Rain is a fragrance I’ve been looking forward to for as long as I’ve lived in Arizona and Michael Paul along with Colton Dixon have absolutely nailed it! If you’ve ever lived in a desert like Arizona, you know this smell and love it, yet it’s so hard to describe. It’s fresh with a slight hint of earthiness in the dry down. Perfect for the spring summer and fall, this is nostalgia in a bottle. I can easily see this as a signature Day Three Fragrance the house will be know for in the years to come. Out of the 100+ bottles in my collection, Desert Rain is one I just keep reaching for over and over again!

Desert Rain feels like stillness before a storm. It opens sharp and green—juniper and cactus blossom with a hint of citrus—but it’s the dry down that does it. The leather comes forward, warm and grounding, while the frankincense and sandalwood wrap around it like a soft blanket. It’s perfect for cold days when you want something deep, comforting, and a little introspective. As all Day Three Fragrances, this is not flashy, just soul-soothing. As a woman who enjoys leather, frankincense and deep fragrances, this will be on constant rotation for Fall and Winter.

Right off the top, you get that airy, almost mineral freshness—like rain hitting hot pavement in the desert. There’s a clean, slightly ozonic feel, but it’s not sharp... it’s smooth, almost calming. As it settles, it starts to turn a little earthy and grounded. You get that damp, sandy vibe mixed with soft woods—nothing heavy, just enough to give it depth. It really captures that “after the storm” feeling. The drydown stays close to the skin, slightly musky, a little salty, and super wearable. One of the best spring-summer fragrances!

This is definitely a unique fragrance and an easy daily drive. They truly captured the fresh desert rain and the earthy untones. With a very light sweet note from what I'm guessing is the catus blossoms. But this is one that truly comes alive once you place it on skin. The notes stand out more. Im getting good longevity on skin and even better on skin. Signature sent worthy and one that will make you stand out.

Oh man, what can I say about it that hasn’t been said! It’s such a beautiful and such special fragrance! It definitely makes me think of the desert as it’s about to rain. I picked up that juniper, tea and sandalwood as well! I can’t believe how beautiful this one is!!! This is one of those fragrances that makes life that much better! 😍😍😍

I really love this fragrance. Floral fresh opening with very pleasant clean dry down. Works great on my skin. Niche so not cheap. Got a sample and loved it so got a full bottle from the Day Three website. Happy to support a small perfumer. Also really love the very strong Aylan. Looking forward to trying the other Day Three fragrances.

This is my new obsession wearing it almost everyday. If that's how it's smells in arizona when it rains then I want to move to arizona . It is a very pleasant scent of bergamote and green tea that blends beautiful with a gorgeous dry out of the leather and sandalwood. 100% blind buy recommend

This has got to be one of my favorite scents of all time. It’s such a beautiful & complex fragrance. It doesn’t smell like 900 others currently on the market - it’s unique! I love it. My ONLY dislike is that, for the price, I wish the longevity was better.

This fragrance is really pleasant smelling. It's a slightly more unique take on a fresh fragrance. It's like Sedley without any of the fizziness and it's airier. Overall, I like this a lot, there is a slight sweetness and its super fresh and delightful.

This a completely unisex refreshing yet a little earthy green tea scent. My new favorite all time! This is amazing and an easy reach for any day any time any occasion. This is your sign to get a sample or a bottle.

Loving this. It has elements of Gentle Fluidity Silver (Juniper, Nutmeg, Bergamot, Woods) and Santal 33 (Sandalwood, Papyrus, Leather) but smells like it's own thing. So good!

It comes off really refreshing, little bit woodsy and sweet. It doesn't project at all but it smells good when people get close.

It’s on the same level as Imagination in terms of easy dumb reach factor. Only issue is it becomes a skin scent very quickly!

I want to get to know this fragrance better because I love this perfume house (looking at you Aylan 😍) and I savor frequent trips to the high desert (looking at you New Mexico). I confess I do not know who Colton Dixon is because I’m not into country music, but I find it cool that he signed my bottle. I also appreciate the samples and little handwritten note from Michael Paul included with orders from Day Three—that’s how you build brand loyalty! I am really enjoying the notes of Desert Rain and it does indeed invoke memories of the distinct ozonic, petrichor scent right before it rains in the southwest US. There is a collective deep sigh of relief and happiness when it rains in the desert and high desert and this is reflected in the calm, clean, comforting notes. However, I’m not impressed with the projection nor longevity, both of which I find weak. I can barely smell it on my skin for a hour. Maybe it needs some time to mature, maybe it will work better when the weather turns cooler and less humid. It’s promising but I’m going to set it aside and re-try this autumn.

Such a new and different take on a nice freshie. it literally give vibes of a rian storm that just passed by in the dessert and you can smell the rain evaporating off the hot ground. With added catus blosson and juniper berries it drys down with some nice woody aspects that tie it together and complete it.At first i wasn't how i felt about this one, but putting it on skin quickly changed my mind. Its so different and unique for a freshie. i think this could be worn year round and is versatile enough for many occasions. if your looking for a new take on a amazing freshie check this one out.

My wife is a big fan. Certainly an easy dumb reach. With only a few more left to try from the discovery set, this has the worst performance. I barely squeaked out 4 hours. Not a showstopper. However, with the cost, it may be hard to justify. If you like it, get it. That's all that matters. Certainly a calming scent. The feel of desert rain, tea, and woody base. I like the profile. Just wish it lasted longer.

Finally got a chance to test this out and wow it's a lot better then I thought it was going to be. It's really nice and unique..Just wish it had a little more punch to it. I might just have to get me a bottle.

Doesnt smell anything like sedley. Its fresh but smooth, green, slightly watery, little sour smoke from the leather. Very nice, subtle side. Clean, fairly masculine, lightly tea soapy. Sig scent.

Much more of a musky aquatic smell than anything. With some very rich resins. Its not bad, but the opening is very strong marine amber smell, something comparable to megamare, or blu mare.

Crazy overpriced, somewhat generic freshie with poor performance. Short and sweet. Not worth the investment.

Sedley my ass! This is no where as good & the up voters should be banned. From this I get woody notes for sure, a soft sweet floral aura. I like the airyness here, but the scent is pretty lame & generic. Wouldn’t even call it a freshie. They try to post unique notes to set the fragrance apart, but ultimately there’s nothing new nor exciting to be experienced.

The sample I got from their sample set was very different from the full bottle smell. Sample was very nice fresh airy spicy. The full bottle is absolutely horrible thick frankincense. You can get some of the other notes, but the frankincense just is so heavy and upfront. Reminds me of a lighter version of swiss arabian incense 01.

Will be giving this a full review after a few more wearings, but one thing is clear. This isn't Sedley. It is much better. With all due respect to Dapper Don below, I got this for $120 when Day 3 sent out a coupon. Sedley is $287 at discounters, more than double the price. Day 3 is a small artisanal company that pushes boundaries. PDM is owned by a private equity firm that makes easily-cloned fragrances that maximize the bottom line. Without question, Desert Rain costs more to make than Sedley, but Day 3 doesn't have a massive advertising budget and doesn't pay off influencers with free product. Also, let this one mature for a while after you first spray it before judging it. The performance will improve significantly.

Best fresh fragrance from day three that I have tried so far. Desert rain has a beautiful top with a blend of juniper and sage that leaves a bright and bold fruity top with a light watery floral tone underneath from the cactus blossom. As it dries you get a nice creamy woods and a very very soft touch of leather to add a bit of warmth. This is the perfect blend for a humid or rainy day and has the aura of a high end fragrance with built in mass appeal.

Dang I love this. Desert Rain is my version of a perfect clean and refreshing scent. Sadly it does not last long nor project enough to justify the $170 for 50ml. So basically a very expensive skin scent. I'd wear this scent in the morning or after the shower and before bed. But never as an option outside simply due to the fact it sits so extremely close to the skin.

Desert Rain has been an absolute killer fragrance in my collection as of late. For someone has lived in Arizona my whole life, this scent really gives me vibes of being outside right after a rain shower. It is so reminiscent of my childhood when it rained a lot. It hardly rains now so I guess this will have to do. Such a phenomenal fragrance.

Like most Day Three fragrances, Nice scent with abysmal performance. Basically last twenty minutes before becoming a skin scent. It’s a shame as they really have some great scents if you don’t mind spending $170-$250 on a 50 ml bottle you need to reapply several times through out the day. Better fragrances out there at 1/3rd the price

They really have a unique home run here but the performance is lacking. You get an hour (tops) of mild/moderate projection then about 5 hours of a skin scent. Even asking people in the office they have to get 3 inches away to smell it after an hour and that's with 10 sprays. I'd pay 50% more for a beast mode of this

Similar very to PDM Sedley. Fizzy Mcdonalds Sprite vibes. Except desert rain has less mint & more florals. Feel like a snake in the Sahara getting its first rain in yrs or waking up and downing a cold glass of water at 2am wearing this rn

I agree with @DapperDon here. I don't think this is a terrible fragrance, but it's just a pretty average fresh aromatic fragrance. I wish the 'rain' accord was more potent, because it's not that strong. This does not 'fizz' like sedley

This one is good. Slightly sweet wood and florals. It has this "chewy" feel which I like. If you something similar but a bit stronger then check out Perpetua by Fulton and Roark. Sooo good.

This is my favorite from the house. It’s this calming fresh scent. The rain accord is so darn good. Then the sandalwood and leather give it depth in dry down but not leathery my any means.

Of the entire line this is the one that the cleanest smell. Magical stuff. Going to give it a full wear to the office tomorrow and see.

Smells cool... Not worth the hype. It turns into a skin scent after like 30mins on my skin but remains noticeable for about 6 hrs

Must have in your collection very unique fragrance with a rain accord. Definitely repurchasing.
