Dirt

I have been wearing this since - I am pretty sure the year was 1993. It does not say who the Nose to this one was but I have heard from insiders its Christopher Brocious. (I hate Perfume) . (He also created Earthworm., Tomato, etc...) I still wear it. It smells like really rich dirt with new grass after a rain. Not dirty smelling at all. Its a happy smell. Someone asked me if I took a nap outside. It lasts longer when you spray it on clothing. I like to spray fragrance on my mask but this made my lips numb right away, and my eyes very red. So no problems at all if its not near my face. On skin, its very nice. It mixes well with Jean Paul Gautier Le Male, but I have not been able to layer it with anything else. Its a one dimensional scent. The drydown is the same. A lot probably has to do with your body chemistry. I like this scent enough to wear it about 3 decades. The first time I found it was in a boutique in Athens Geprgia. I was an Angel Men fan at the time. I think before that I was a poor student and was wearing Bijan, 273 Beverly H ills, Aramis, and Old Spice. I have grown up since then...

smells and metallic wet. the bottle is a little sketchy and the perfume itself is super oily, i had a spill and the bottle is always greasy. i wore this all of freshman year of college when i was a geology major before switching to ceramics. smells so good - just like dirt but in a mineralic wet thin way if that makes sense. like the dirt around an underground vein of water. like the pottery studio - lots of sitting water and sealed bags of wet things. smells just like a new batch of reclaim - some people think its gross and must/mildewy. it smells to me like one singular note, and it fades fairly quickly. worth it, good/weird signature. the only thing is that the perfume itself is a little oily in texture - careful not to stain your clothes. it smells like wet rocks. uncomfortable a little, in a good way, like when you walk after the rain and the grass is all dewy but the hem of your pants gets a little damp. if you are an oil painter this would also smell so good on you, it has a little stuffyness that glossier you has, like pencil shavings but if it was mica crumbles instead. low low sillage.

Demeter just *gets* it, man. I love this and if you enjoy gardening or hiking, you might like it too. It's simply the smell of fresh, wet loam. Nothing dry, dusty, or sandy. This is dark topsoil, but without any stinky fertilizer/manure. I think many "earthy" scents tend to lean bitter, but this instead has more of a sweetness. (Also, I find that this scent doesn't have that... "indie" smell, iykwim.) I'm not sure if it's because I'm from Ohio and this company is based in Pennsylvania, but it smells right on the money to me - this is springtime in the midwest, pre-flowers. March, I suppose. I bought this to layer with other scents (it's linear, just straight up dirt), but there's no reason you couldn't wear it alone. If the smell of rich, dark earth intrigues you, I say pick it up. At Demeter's price points, you really can't go wrong. Like most Demeter scents, it doesn't project or last very long, but I enjoy personal skin scents, so it works for me. It's also one of their more oily formulations, in case that matters to you. tldr; It's wet, fresh, natural, and a lil bit sweet. It's f'n dirt.

I read all the reviews in Fragrantica before buying this one, most of them praising on how realistic this is, and even so when I received it I was amazed at how well Demeter managed to reproduce the smell of rain-wet earth. It's really surprising. I do love it! I like to use it when I am at home, either on cool or hot days and I also really enjoy spraying it before going to bed at night. It gives me a feeling of peace. I bought the 4 oz bottle 3 months ago and I only have a third left. I will definitely buy it again when finished. The duration is short and the projection is weak, but with the use that I give it, that is not an issue. If you enjoy the smell of wet clean soil and that is what you expect from this gem, you can safely blind buy it. I did that and I'm delighted Update: I also love it layered with other scents, mostly florals. It blends very well with Flower Show, also from Demeter and with Tous tous. I smell like a wet garden full of flowers.Nice!

If you are upset by the idea of wearing a fragrance that smells like DIRT then you have missed the point of the Demeter Fragrance Library. They are single scents that capture a moment, a place, an element or something organic. Huge fun! "Laundromat" smells like fresh laundry bouncing around in a dryer, "Creme Brulee" smells like that famous french desert and "Sex On The Beach" smells like.... ok so if you haven't experienced it then the scent may be hard to gauge. So Dirt smells like Dirt, not dirty or off but like soil. As their name suggests - 'Fragrance Library' should be collected, add them to your library of fragrances. You might keep a Gideon next to the bed but your library should be full of wonderful varied experiences to expand your mind. I recommend you mix Demeter, make your own combos. They are the closest most will get to being able to create their own scent. Birthday Cake x 2 squirts +Sex on the Beach x 2 squirts +Dirt x 1 squirt = Shagaliscious

8.5/10 Cleanist dirt smell ever. Would never wear this by itself, but it's a great layering fragrance. The top pro and con are right on the money. It's the best-smelling dirt you're going to get. But ALL Demeter fragrances are colognes, meaning that they will always be weak. But that's not what I wanted for this fragrance. One of my goals is to smell like a hermit who lives in the middle of the forest and forages for flowers and berries. How do you not smell like flowers, berries, and a forest without smelling a hint of dirt? So, to make this last longer, I spray it on my pits as an inside joke. This makes it stronger and last a few hours more. Demeter does sell lotion of all of their scents, so you can buy that if you want a stronger smell.

this is like a 'your skin but better' scent for wood nymphs and aspiring bog witches. literally wet soil. im in love. this is exactly the scent ive been searching for - photorealistic, wet, dirty, natural. projection is minimal but i think it works in favor of this scent, its subtle and gentle. weirdly musky, blends with the skin perfectly. its rather warm, despite being a 'wet soil' type of scent. there is something a little limey and juicy in the opening but it quickly goes away, and my only qualm about this perfume would be that it becomes extremely linear after like an hour and you cant really smell it unless you stick your nose right up to your skin.

I read an article about this perfume years ago, and was utterly intrigued! Although I had no idea the name really described the actual scent. It does smell like wet soil, but I really like it! But I thought no one else would like it, so I put it away. Now that I see a few other ladies here on Fragrantica actually like it, I will put it on my vanity again. The lasting power and sillage is close to zero so even though it is a unique scent, I don't think anyone will be offended. Because they probably won't be able to smell it :p I might pick up "Grass" and layer it with this one for that greenhouse effect.

Gorgeous fragrance oh my god. As a Dirt Enthusiast I'll admit this is not my favorite Type of Dirt Smell but it is an incredibly realistic Dirt Smell of another kind. Pre mixed bags of potting soil freshly hosed down in a garden center. Wet, slightly mineralic, earthy and soft. I can almost feel it in my hands all spongy and light, fertilizer beads and pearlite. Stunning. It brings me back to so many days out in the sun, hands and work jeans dirtied. While it's a fun collection addition, and I adore smelling like this, I will stick to rolling around in the dirt like a horse to achieve the effect.

This is so grounding, so calming! It is the scent of freshly-turned rich soil, after a good rain. Living in NYC, right off a major highway, I often crave the scent of the good earth. It never fails to relax me, and brings back much-loved memories of childhood summers spent upstate. And unlike most Demeters, it has actually longevity, a few hours or so. Minimum sillage, but that's fine, because I wear this strictly for me. It's a very optomistic fragrance, with the promise of new life and growth.

I may or may not have written a review before (if I have its been years). I love wearing this with FearBOOtique "Gravyard" which the notes are rose and dirt. I love this combo so much. I'm morbid and this to me is a goth perfume. very simple and unisex. the only downside is that it's kinda weak and doesn't seem to last very long on me; it also leaves a oily film which is bad for clothing but I spray it on my clothes because it doesn't last on my skin for too long

Love at first whiff: musky earthy, sweet earthy, mineralic earthy, herbal earthy, dry floral, dry woody, green stems, brown leaves. (Use a leaf blower on the front lawn of my New Jersey home and a fragrance like this eminates from the soil.) A squeeze of lemon juice, tomato leaf, some sort of woody, dirty floral (maybe ylang ylang), patchouli, mysore sandalwood, cinnamon bark. Projects well and lasts a good 16 hours on me. Clever, cozy, stylish. Just remarkable.

Not a unisex scent by far. This is purely a layering fragrance. Put on your favourite in the morning then after the drydown, maybe 1.5 hrs, add a squirt of Dirt. The combination is pure male. Keep it in your car and a top up squirt every 3 hours. Any other way of applying this just doesnt cut it. Any collection is incomplete without it. I read an earlier review asking "who would wear this?"...Clint Eastwood does, thats who. Say no more.

This is very similar to the base materials (flint and vetiver) of TDH. In fact, this could easily be layered under that fragrance to increase the mineral earthiness. Dirt smells like nutrient dense soil, put right up to your nose. I've always had an affinity for earthy scents and this is the literal epitome of that. Extremely versatile scent. This is a top 5 from Demeter for me.

just got this perfume and omg isn't it just love at first smell. i see why kate moss liked it. it's very... well. moss-y, pun intended, damp, like a rich soil with the slightest citrusy note that i felt for some reason. maybe it's just the freshness of it, but still! i feel like it will be great for fall and spring, matching the vibe of everything around you

this was one of my favorites for a long time, and my first demeter perfume. it's so minimalist and definitely unique (not everyone loves the smell of soil!) but i liked it a lot. the petrichor quality is really what makes it. layering this with florals is incredible. longevity is weak, sillage is intimate, but overall a really good and unique scent.

I LOVE IT! This is such a realistic fragrance! The wet potting soil. The projection is very poor, though once I spray it on my clothes, I can still smell it up close after hours. It is a bit sweet, yet super fresh and realistic. I'm wondering what other scents it could be perfectly layered with.

Metallic (in a fresh, not ~bloody~ way) and beets and dirt and rain! I love this scent. Not for everyone. As with most Demeter scents, the longevity on skin is poor but I’ve found that it has good staying power on clothes. Great on its own or layered. A nice pick me up. Energizing

The way a leaf covered road smells after it rains and you're the first person to walk on the path and the leaves crush under your feet. The frangrance lasts about 30 minutes, not very long. But for the short length of time it does last, its kind of a happy morale booster.

the first time i smelled this i fell in love. for me something about this scent is addicting and nostalgic. smells like wet soil, but it smells sweet. it's great for layering with clean floral perfumes and other petrichor scents.
