Iris

I am a true orris enthusiast, in fact, so much so that I sometimes will just wear pure orris absolute (the crazy expensive liquid with irnone percentage in the 90% range). I happened upon Demeter's Iris when I was hoping against what I had thought were against all odds that I would find an inexpensive perfume that I could at least supplement my natural orris habit with at least some of the time. Well, I was shocked to find that this smells like really fine orris with a very high irone content. For those of you who complain that it smells cold, metallic and dry I have this to say, then why did you buy iris? You obviously did not know that those are all characteristics of what orris is supposed to smell like. This is the only iris perfume on the market that I have smelled that smells only like iris. Others I like but they are cluttered up with other notes which, although beautiful in their own way, are not welcome for those of us who just want to smell iris. The only perfume that is relatively close the Serge Lutens Silver Iris Mist, but it focuses more in the irone, alpha, beta, and methyl ionone, and iris nitrile (violet smells) and not the woody characteristics that natural orris possesses. Then on the dry down other notes make too strong of an appearance while in the Demeter Iris, it's iris all the way. It is true that it could last a little longer but it's great and certainly not expensive so I doubt if any of us are going to go broke just putting on a few more sprays throughout the day.

The price of genuine Iris is probably so high that we can assume that this fragrance is chemically made. This scent is a strong, buttery thick and to my nose almost acrylic iris/makeup scent. This is not easy wear, but I think this could be an excellent for layering to give edge and mature to some sweets too. Used moderately, this fragrance can be very sophistic and beautiful Iris, I think.

Metallic-cool floral with noticeably rooty aspects, gets creamier as it warms on my skin. A beautiful iris scent, worthy standalone or layered with something else. Like this in the warm season. Sits just at arms' length on me.

Absolutely obsessed by Iris so I needed this for my collection Never tried the illusive Serge Lutens ‘Iris Silver Mist’ which has forever intrigued me from the descriptions... so if this has a more of rounded reflection of all the iris compounds which ISM was said to have checklisted then I’m all for diving in!! So I did! So first off - comparing Demeter’s Iris to my extensive iris collection ... I was surprised that this didn’t go 100% into the waxy carrot realm from the get go! It is there, but, there’s a whole other buffet cart on this train! What I am getting - in the opening especially - is something of a fenugreek - maple syrup note... with perhaps even a slight turmeric - curry leaf quality. This was a real surprise... vegetal as Iris usually is but something almost gourmand! As this is pretty linear from top to bottom (Demeter seem to work like a soliflore) ... it only gives way to a more lingering powdery-violet scent and the base of the dry down and even then not completely. To be clear - it’s not unpleasant, it’s fascinating (for iris lovers) and I will be applying more and exploring and comparing this more... to all the other iris and orris compositions I have.... But I feel the iris frags I have (Dior Homme Intense, Chanel 19 Poudre, ‘Cedrè Iris’ by Affinessence, Urania’s Childen ‘Lance’, Frapins ‘Checkmate’, Iris Cendre Naomi Goodsir, Iris Shot Olfactive Studio) are all lean specifically into a very particular powdery, waxy/make-up cosmetic smell with a boiled carrot vegetal... with hints of violet. Demeter’s Iris is not merely that ... worth exploring for the iris obsessives like me

120 ml bottle here. The sprayer gives a good *wooosh*! The scent: very irisy iris. You think you've smelled iris out of Dior Homme? Try this. Not a safe blind buy if you don't know what you're getting.

I cultivate irises. They are a little hobby and a great joy. I started with 7 bulbs and now have over a hundred plants. I love irises. This perfume smells like irises. It smells like the icy woody iris that I work with and love. If you like iris perfumes but don't have much experience with the actual plant, this probably isn't a great choice. You may be happier with one of the lovely iris perfumes. Much of what people think of as an iris scent is not iris at all. Iris is sharp and bitter and cold and a touch sickening. It is not sweet or civilized- it leaves that to the violets. The sillage on this is low. That's great because most people really won't love this. I bought the biggest bottle and a backup. It's heavenly to me.

I'm so impressed with Iris by Demeter. I received this yesterday expecting it to smell nothing like iris/orris, but it's actually really awesome. It's a very well-done and true orris note. It starts off a little carrot-y and it is rooty, slightly metallic, and gets creamier as it fades, while still retaining its true iris scent. So many iris fragrances have lots of other notes added such as rose, citrus, ambrette, lily. This one is the real deal, not dressed up or pretty-fied at all. Lasting power is decent but not great, sillage is also okay but not great.

It figures that this fabulous orris scent would be sitting inconspicuously right under my nose so to speak. At $25 for 100ml, I feel like similarly simple, true orris root scents (Prada Purple Rain I'm looking at you) have alot of explaining to do as to why they cost 15 times as much. Thank you to Rosie Cotton, fostermd and hadas for the dead-on reviews. I wouldn't have otherwise tried this and found what I've been eternally looking for.
