L'Eau Papier

L'eau Papier has become an unexpected favourite of mine. When it was released, as a huge fan of Diptyque, I was strangely not attracted to it. I read reviews suggesting smells of paper and ink. And sesame. I crinkled my nose and thought who would want to smell of sesame? Not me! I went to the shop where I buy my Diptyques and the sales assistants all told me it's "very very weak", as in they were not impressed. All odds were against L'eau Papier and I. But one day I reached for a bottle and tried it,.. and was surprised. It didn't make me think of ink, nor of paper that day for that matter. I simply thought it was beautiful and comforting. I came back a few times for a few more tries, and ended up purchasing a bottle. Now that I own it and have had time wear it properly, I can properly emit my thoughts... And I swallow my previous prejudiced thoughts, because apparently yes I am enjoying smelling like sesame. I find L'eau Papier a complex and surprising perfume. It is complex not just because it develops throughout the day, but on myself it will develop randomly in one direction or another, or smell different according to maybe my mood or the weather or whatever. That also makes it surprising. Sometimes it can resemble the smell of paper, but in a very specific way. I saw a video where someone ripped a piece of paper, a thicker sheet, the type that would be used for a fancy wedding invitation, demonstrating the paper smell. That ripped textured smell is the paper smell I get. I guess that is the musks, woods and mimosa part. Sometimes I smell a spicy pepper smell, which when I see the notes I have no idea where that comes from. Sometimes I smell steamed rice, or steamed rice with sesame. Other times I smell something similar to Asian rice based desserts, slightly sweet. Considering I usually am not a fan of gourmand perfumes, it is surprising that I adore all these rice smells. (Though the fact that I'm half Asian and grew up with my mum always steaming rice may have something to do with it). Whatever the case, and whatever the smell L'eau Papier is giving me, I always find it beautiful. With regards to its "weakness", yes it is a gentle scent. It's gentle but present and lingers for hours. It's gentle like a comforting warm hug. And that's fine. I personally enjoy wearing perfume for myself, not for others. So if it's gentle but I perceive it and it relaxes me and makes me feel somewhat creative, sometimes that's just what I need, and that is perfect.

I really like this scent. I was expecting something completely different, more papery, but I smell what I think it's the mimosa very loudly. Initially I thought it was a bit tuberose, but I corrected myself, but definitely white flower. In the middle I caught something reminiscent of paper, but quite lightly. In the base, I feel still a sharpness of the flowers, and no musk yet. Settles close to the skin, but on me, when I sniff it's a bit sharp. UPDATE LONG WEAR: Suddenly the sesame is very prominent, and it settled beautifully musky, almost lactonic on my skin. I read someone say they wanted to bite their arm off, and I felt the same way. Delicious. Suddenly one of my favorite scents in life. I guess for some noses it can be a little poignant. If you wanna have a bottle without paying the high price, you can try two Brazilian perfumery houses that do a great job mimicking L'eau Papier: 1- Ohana Kameala- Le papier: this is the exact same scent. It's round, had all of the edges wrapped together into a flowy, beautiful fragrance. It has layers, depth. The closest and best in the market, but they only sell 30ml bottles for this one. 2- Le botanic- Paper plans: this is still similar, but it has a note in the opening that reminds me of an old wardrobe (to me). It does go away after a while, so you have to push through. Plus it has less sesame, which leaves the spotlight to a more poignant note that is more common in some male fragrances. It's an ok scent, but way more destabilized than the Ohana version. But to be fair, it is a very difficult perfume to mimick. I did a blind test with some people in my circle: My mother in law thinks it doesn't smell like a woman's perfume, she wasn't a fan. My mom thinks its nice, she really got the Gohan rice note, and my boyfriend described as: cardamom, like walking though a museum, cold, clean, artsy.

Really beautiful! I’m not sure where the comparison to Another 13 or Glossier You (GY) is coming from though. I think L’eau Papier (LP) is completely different. I have Another 13 and it smells a lot more sharp and metallic, whereas LP smells soft and subdued. The florals in LP also smell a lot more “yellow” and buttery than the florals in GY, which smell more cool and powdery. I can see the similarity in the dry down of GY and LP - though LP is not as sweet as GY and dries down to a more creamy, buttery skin scent. I’m not getting a lot of wood (which my skin tends to pick up on a lot). I personally barely get the rice notes after the first ten seconds of wear, but it does seem to add a certain almost lactonic depth and keep LP from being too floral. Honestly I would describe this as a sunny, creamy, buttery floral with a musky, lactonic floral dry down. I usually become pretty nose-blind to most scents after an hour or two but I can still smell LP on my skin and clothes and it’s been 5 hours now. It’s definitely a light, delicate scent, not overpowering but still powerful. I love it!

This fragrance is something you kinda have to smell for yourself, but I'll tell you how it went for me — the initial spray made my nose wrinkle. It smelled like black pepper and white rice. Who wants to smell like this? I meandered around the store, then left. On the way home, I smelled my wrist. Then again. Then four more times. By the time I pulled into my driveway, I was thinking, "Maybe I should go back and get a bottle." Make no mistake, this is 100% a skin scent. If you wear it solo, I wouldn't expect anyone to smell it on you unless they're giving you a hug, or some equally close-quartered activity. But that kinda serves its purpose, because this scent is so sexy to me — and not in a vanilla, Victoria's Secret way. It smells like you've been lounging on expensive, soft bedding reading a book. It truly is "my skin but better." Personally, I currently wear this every day. Most days, I layer it with something else, because that's kind of what (I think) it's made for. It's so unique, so for that reason, I think it's worth the money even being a skin scent.

Warm, inoffensive, milky. A hint of musk that reminds you of someone's skin. The base notes are the same as White Rice by D'annam if you have ever tried it. Cotton, grain, dull milk and steamed rice. But this has a sharper top note than White Rice, less powdery and more bright, floral, soapier. It makes you smell familiar. It makes you smell like someone with open arms and an open heart. It is unique and a little mysterious. Like you stepped too close to someone with whom you intended to keep a professional distance, accidentally knowing an intimate part of their lives, like how their shampoo smells or the softness of the hairs on the back of their neck. Yes I recommend this perfume and I think it is safe as a blind buy. Just get a little sample as it is quite a particular scent. But for most, I believe you will like it.

there is a split second of a chemical opening, but it settles almost immediately into one of the cleanest and most pleasant musks i have smelled i think ever. it feels very soft and bright i think that's the best way i can describe it. i was expecting it to lean more masculine, but i actually get the opposite. it reads more feminine to me, which really surprised me! it even makes me want to look into more yellow florals maybe overall it smells very clean and easy. nothing about it is especially striking, but i think that is part of the appeal for me. it honestly kind of reminds me of freshly clean hair? the longevity is not great, but since the scent stays so consistent and does not really change much, reapplying does not take away from the experience at all! if I was in my clean girl era this might be the go-to

This is the scent that got me to create an account just to share my thoughts on this beautiful perfume. This is a safe blind buy if you're into musky, airy, paper-like, second close-to-skin, gourmand scent. This is a great perfume in a cold environment especially in the office. At initial spray, it really does smell like a steamed rice. To which it adds depth and nostalgia. It brought me back to my childhood days. Where you feel calm, safe, happy and contented. A beautiful memory altogether. It gives you a warm hug whenever you smell it. Then it dries down to a soft musky scent which is not offensive and head-inducing. I'd want to gatekeep this fragrance, but this truly deserves an attention. I'd love to say that Diptyque is a niche perfume that takes you back to the past and making you feel at home.

I’ve tried all the skin musky scents that are out there. This is definitely one of my favorites. To me it smells like sitting in a hot bath and the steam surrounding you smells like all your best bath products and your skin is warm and musky and clean. Perfectly light and inoffensive. This is my go to for the office. You won’t have people saying “what perfume is that?” You’ll have people saying “you smell nice today”. This is absolutely a SKIN scent. Don’t expect major projection or being able to control a room with this one. That is not its purpose. It will just have you smelling effortlessly chic. Do I have to reapply throughout the day? Yes. Do I care? No. The steam rice accord is genius and unique. The yellow florals never get too loud. It’s perfectly balanced and comforting.

Such a beautiful and soft composition. Certainly unisex. Definitely an intimate fragrance that radiates very little, and is fleeting in its longevity. Excellent casual fragrance for everyday use. White musks, cooked rice steam, crushed sesame seed, dried mimosa potpourri. There's something weirdly animalic and acrid - in a good way. Some reviews mention smelling like one's own scent/slightly sweaty and I would tend to agree with this. This sharp note is especially noticeable immediately after applying the fragrance. I've also noticed that it is very dependent on skin chemistry - it smells very different on my partner compared to myself. May or may not be a blind buy depending on your nose.

First it gave me a wow effect, as it was my first skin-like smell. It does fit to any season, the smell doesn't annoy at all. Sadly I have never gotten any compliments while being outside (thinking the longetivity is not that great), but while giving people to smell from the bottle - everybody loved it. I like that it is a pretty budget option, since most of the great skin-like perfumes cost a lot more. I feel like i have a love-hate relationship with Diptyque, since some of them perfumes do not last at all.. Overall I don't feel like buying a second bottle now, but it will always feel like a safe option to come back to

L'Eau Papier is one of the most comforting fragrances I've ever worn - Soft sesame, mimosa, and warm musk create a scent that feels cozy, powdery, and quietly elegant. It reminds me of warm skin, soft paper, and the feeling of being wrapped in a gentle blanket. Despite its simplicity, there's something very calming and addictive about it. It never feels gourmand or overly sweet, nor does it smell like a typical clean musk fragrance. Extremely versatile and easy to wear. The only downside is the performance, as it stays quite close to the skin. A beautiful example of quiet confidence in fragrance form. Love ❤️

This is my olfactory home, my true signature scent. If L'Eau Papier were a person, they would be someone intelligent, kind, and effortlessly beautiful whose calming presence you instantly crave. I see a whisper of warm mimosa and comforting cereal, floating over a velvety, second-skin white musk. In a world full of loud, industrial scents that trigger headaches, this is a gentle embrace. Perfect for spring and fall. I can wear it successfully in the winter. In the summer, any kind of musk is too heavy for me, which is why I switch to Philosykos. Diptyque is definitely my go-to brand.

The BEST perfume I have ever smelled. It is reminiscent of a warm and lingering hug and the scent is so intimate you sometimes get wiffs of it throughout the day and it is beyond delightful. It is musky yet clean and is not overpowering at all. The scent is beyond addictive and something about it makes you want to inhale it for the rest of your life. The dry down is the real star of the show and it smells heavenly paired with Nemat's amber oil. This perfume also lasts FOREVER-- lasting for weeks on my clothing. Highly recommend, I cant get enough of it!!

I really didn’t like this at first because I was expecting a more rice forward profile. But then I found myself continuously reaching for it for bedtime and suddenly my sample was drained! Now I wear it almost every night to bed alongside white rice by d’Annam and lull by Gabar. White rice and L’eau papier really aren’t comparable in my opinion. White rice is starchy, almost salty and has a prominent jasmine note. L’eau Papier reminds me of powdery snow, and has a distinct sesame steam. Both are daily bedtime wears for me!

very cozy everyday fragrance, lies close to the skin. beautiful slightly floral opening, turns powdery very fast. overall great musky fragrance. i wish it had better longevity - this would make me automatically buy a full bottle. edit: got gifted a 100 ml bottle and couldnt be happier. cant live without this fragrance and get tons of compliments on it. a shame the price is so high, but hopefully the 100ml bottle will last long enough. can't stop reapplying it through the day, just NEED to smell it on myself at all times

Very classy, clean, easy wear! Quick edit* I have worn this fragrance for the better part of the day and I’m in love. I feel lucky that this fragrance wears well on me. I thought this fragrance would be a bit fleeting due to its soft, powdery nature, it is not. However, this has worn beautifully on my skin staying sweet, soft and musky. I have no other, nor have tried a white musk fragrance that resembles this in any way whatsoever. This is beautiful and will always have a home in my fragrance library.

A subtle and sleeper scent, in my opinion. The steamed rice scent complements the musk beautifully, like your skin but sweeter/better. The woodiness and sweetness of the scent remind me of the sauna, when the wood's heated up and the oils mingle in the air for a lovely steam. Perfect for hazy, rainy and laid-back days. I personally love this for bed, simply because it's just a cosy and comfortable choice. I've gotten a few compliments on the fragrance; I just wish the scent had more longevity 3

Bought a second bottle and I just need to express again how much I LOVE this gem. It’s intimate and stays close to you ..it’s like a warm hug that u can’t get enough in... It’s not offensive it just adds a snuggly feeling to your day.. Perfect for signature scent in my opinion if you are someone who does not want a statement fragrance through power but through quality. originally, when i tested this fragrance, i thought i hated it. it opened with a very distinct tortilla chip scent on my skin which lasted a little under an hour. however, when that faded, the most beautiful, nostalgic librarian scent hid underneath. it felt like i was smelling my elementary school library and reliving the joy of discovering reading for the first time. it’s not a dusty, academic paper note in my opinion. at least on my skin in summer heat, it leaned a lot more playful

Not only did I blind buy this I got engraved :/ I really trusted my instincts but had buyers remorse while I waited for my package to arrive. Mixed reviews and people saying longevity and tortilla chip smell.... I resolved that maybe it would be a fail but sooooo happy to report that it wasn’t the case. This smells like a vintage face cream super subtle clean musky I think the mimosa note gives it something that really balances out the musk. Love it so much.

ohhhhh gosh.... when this dried down i wanted to bite my flesh off and eat myself!!! im surprised that there isnt a lactonic accord here because this is so milky, a musky vanilla milk. it made me feel like an angel. beautiful and im actually going to die if i dont get this in a full bottle, i dont even CARE that i dont ever wear gourmands unless im going to sleep i’d change that aspect of myself just for this perfume edit: I BOUGHT IT!! my life is complete

This is the only fragrance I can buy bottle after bottle and not get sick of. I am completely obsessed with it and fear that I will never find anything that hits the spot like this does. It’s creamy and musky in a steamy way, never in your face but in the most gentle way possible. The biggest downfall of L’eau Papier is how little it lasts. I can’t smell it after 30 min of applying. I wish they made an EDP or at least a body lotion to be able to layer.

My favorite musky perfume!!! I discovered while curating my fragrance collection that I’m a lover of musks, yellow florals, as well as white, and woody fragrances so I decided to try this in Dillard one day and I was immediately blown away and had to purchase. I’ll definitely be one of those older ladies that will find a way to buy this even if it’s ever discontinued years down the line! I’ll never run out of L’eau Papier.... Neverrrrr!

my favourite fragrance to ever exist, honestly. the musk note is done right; it's soft and pleasant to the nose; it's more than a skin-like scent but falls just short of the nostalgia of an old book from your local bookstore. the sesame and woody notes develop after a few minutes without overwhelming the musk. l'eau papier is papery, clean and intimate — it won't have heads turning but will linger in the air after hugging a loved one.

why go to therapy when you can just overspray l’eau papier? this is my favourite scent. EVER. it owns me. i’m emotionally dependent on this 100ml bottle of rice, mimosa and musk magic. it’s cozy and familiar and intimate and it gives me such a relaxing vibe, like comfort in a bottle. every time i wear it it’s like i’m laying my head on a very fluffy cushion. with it i finally understood what love at first sight (sniff) means.

i did not like this initially (which deeply disappointed me) but after owning the sample for a bit, it was like a switch flipped and i could suddenly see the magic of it. yes, it is warm and fluffy and starchy, but it is also somehow sparkling. there's a beautiful, delicate sheen to it, like a silver line of glitter through musky clouds. i'm considering getting a full bottle of this, and i almost never get full bottles.

I don't like skin scents but this is a MASTERPIECE, holy shit. The mimosa and wood mixed with the sesame is otherworldly. The comment below me said steamed rice & clothes fresh out of the dryer is spot on. Signature Scent worthy & unfortunately worth the price tag although I have complaints about it only being avalaible EDT and not an EDP. Especially given the price point but it is unfortunately full bottle worthy.

my signature scent and the first fragrance that i fell in love with. this is the one that got me into fragrance as a hobby, and i’m proudly bias in favor of it. the sesame note is so sweet and alluring. papery, ricey, savory and inviting. unlike anything i’ve tried, and i’ve tested a lot. nothing has been able to scratch the itch that leau papier does and i’ll happily overspray this to make up for the weak sillage

A clean, savoury musk, sometimes papery-woody, at times gently floral with the mimosa. Sometimes it smells like standing over the rice cooker, sometimes it has the invigourating effects of animalics for me, just without smelling even a hint unclean or pissy. I know this will sound pretentious, but sometimes smelling this on me is like a mild aphrodisiac, makes me horny for myself... is that gay?

So distinctly rice steam. The warm and soft aromatic ghost of rice. This is the most perfectly blended, sophisticated scent profile. The only problem is that it is too good. I get anxious when it leaves me (longevity on skin is very limited) and I rewear shirts just because they still carry this scent. I have collected all L’eau Papier scented products and compare everything to this now.

I like most Diptyque creations but this one has a special place in my heart. It feels like a hug from a loved one. It is so comforting and calming. I often use it as a bedtime scent. The rice steam note is amazing. I did not even know I liked it. I was testing it on my quest for a mimosa fragrance. It is not mimosa forward enough for me here, but scent is breathtaking regardless.

I'm upset with how much i like this on me. It's such a cozy warm clean scent, like reading a book in fresh fluffy pyjamas. I like that it doesn't really change over time. The initial spray is pretty much still what you get after a couple hours but slightly faded. However, it does not project like at all and doesn't last long enough to justify buying a bottle at the moment.

This has quickly become my go-to skin scent. I can’t get enough of it. The sesame note is subtle, but it’s there in the most beautiful way, and I love it. The longevity really impressed me too. I still catch soft whiffs of it even 6 hours later, which is amazing for an eau de toilette. It’s definitely earned a permanent spot in my collection.

bought this perfume as a result of it being recommended to me after i asked scents similar to dove's rice&macadamia body peeling. I definitely smell the resemblance. Very grass and rice heavy for me but i love it as a subtle your-skin-but-better scent. It's like writing a letter on a spring morning in the freshly mowed grass.

not much to say but it changed my mind on how i thought about florals and musk. its a very pleasing wear and honestly shocked me on how much i enjoyed this scent, doesnt last an insane amount of timeon my skin but has me coming back for little whiffs of my wrist every 45 minutes. very classy very safe and very comforting.

I had a bottle of this before and thought of repurchasing The newer bottle dominantly smells more of musk on my skin, it smells like a classic “man perfume”— I know that I should just give it some time for it to evolve to its scent that everyone loves. I just can’t wait for any longer; I miss the scent of rice and sesame

My friend said he smelled like a rice cake with this, and he’s Asian so he knows what he’s talking about lol he hated it which is so sad as I loooove this perfume :( Also I smelled his arm and it definitely pulled more as rice on him, because on me it smells more floral clean musk. On his skin it was literally rice.

i’m not a regular member of over sprayers anonymous but this lovely little number has me spray, spray, spraying. it sits so close to the skin and is short lived enough that i feel justified in my gluttony. i get steamed rice and sometimes sesame in the opening. it dries down to a musky hay with a bit of sweetness.

The first perfume that made me realize I love having mimosa in clean fragrances. It smells absolutely amazing.L'Eau Papier has a calming, clean feel and radiates a very pure energy. I just wish it were a bit longer-lasting and had better projection. That said, I’m in love! I definitely want to get a full bottle.

It varies for me whether I prefer this one or BDK 312 Saint-Honoré. At the moment, I’m leaning more toward L’Eau Papier because of the sesame note. I do find the two somewhat redundant to own together, you only need one of them. On my skin, it performs quite well and lasts impressively long for an EDT.

the steamed rice accord in the opening spray is so addicting and comforting, I love this perfume at bed time layered over Nemat Vanilla Musk oil, it reminds me of a vanilla rice pudding. The dry down is also beautiful, skin scent with a lil something extra. An easy everyday wear or cozy at home scent

best discovery in 2025, i cant stop using it and whenever i spray it i feel nice lasts a lot but don't expect projection, but its so subtle you can do 15 sprays and you feel nice and cozy even when people ask me about it, i feel nice exlpaining that is a perfume inspired by paper and they get it

I did not like this when it was first released. Forward to 2026, revisited and it is now a 'like'. It's like the iron steam off of starched linens, with the steam from cooked, toasted rice. Slightly nutty sesame facets. Dries down to a bar of creamy Dove soap. Clean, musky skin scent.

i truly love this fragrance. it's the first savory fragrance i've ever owned, and i didn't know i'd enjoy it this much! i find it very calming, home-y, and i've been told that it's almost reminiscent of a tortilla chip. clean, salty (more so at first), and never an attack on the nose.

On paper it smells like a simple musk, but on my skin at first it smelled like tamale masa. The dry down is where the mimosa note was striking and intense and I enjoyed it. Very unique on skin, I kept sniffing it. I see why there is so much hype.

like steamed rice and clothes fresh out of the dryer. sooooo beautiful, warm, and cozy. it lasts FOREVER too but the sillage and projection are sadly very weak, it's super intimate. still love it despite that though! overall rating: 🩷🩷🩷🩷💔 4.5/5

Oooh I love this one so much! But this is the scent that you put on for yourself and not for the others. When I have it on I just want to cocoon and hug myself and stay in this scent bubble forever. This is self care scent! Highly recommend!!!

A little strange spice opening but the dry down is fabulous! Maybe the opening note is sesame that smells like a dried spice (cumin? Pizza seasoning?) to my nose. Not sure. I'm still in love with it as the spice scent does not last forever.

I adore this scent. It reminds me of toasted warm rice and feels very comforting to me. I love using it as a bedtime scent. It reminds me of a more refined mature Glossier You. This is definitely a scent I will always want in my collection.
