L'Eau Trois Eau de Toilette

This is going to be a long and personal review, so don't read if you just want to hear about the perfume itself. Last summer, i took an interest in incense perfumes. My first olfactive interests started with incense at around 14, albeit cheaper incense sticks that smelled more like smoke than what was advertised on the box. Eventually my taste in incense got refined (if that is possible lol) and i had grown a lot of love for nag champa powder incense. the floral, spicy, slightly indolic and resinous incense. Sadly I never truely experienced things like myrrh or frankincense, because i didnt grow up in a religious household and i never frequented religious sites. this meant i didnt have a real understanding of incense other than nag champa or east asian kinds. When i was in Antwerp and saw a diptyque store, i was thrilled! no stores near me carried l'eau trois and i couldnt order samples anywhere. SO i went inside, all sweaty, and sprayed l'eau trois on a blotter. I was so disappointed in what i got. I only smelled an extemely dry spice cabinet with tons of smoke. At this point, i was convinced i only liked floral or powdery perfumes and hated ambers/resins/anything that wasnt a floral. so i gave up on it and forgot about it for a whole year. In that same year, i discovered multiple ambery/resinous perfumes that have changed my whole outlook on perfumes. It started with l'heure bleue, then angel's dust, then shalimar (and to some extent, marions-nous although its not ambery). All scents that are considered floral oriental. Heavily spiced, deep, yet rounded off and never screechy or overwhelming. I also found out through these that i actually do enjoy intensity perfumes. I used to think i only liked light stuff, because most strong scents on the market smell similar and unrefined, but i was wrong. What i truly hated was just messy perfumery! Then I got relique d'amour by oriza l legrand which came with a reve d'ossian sample. Both incense perfumes that go in complete different directions. i cant wear relique daily because it invokes such profound emotions within me, and reve felt a bit too cinnamon centric for my tastes. Relique smells like the opposite of reve in a way, because relique is incense burning in a damp cold pine forest inside of a broken down ancient stone temple, while reve was mediterannean, dry, warm and less about the environment and more about the incense itself. I thoughtt o myself: i need an incense for daily wear. DIptyque makes the best daily wear scents. I should try l'eau trois again after all this experience... Last weekend I smelled Tempo by diptyque, another scent i used to hate but now love (my mom is buying that one for us to share so im not reviewing it just yet). August is coming to an end, and Tempo made me suddenly develop a deep craving for something autumnal. Then, weirdly, Eloise Scents posted a video about l'eau trois. It was the perfect timing, because it pushed me to buy something i now actually felt ready for. (ACTUAL REVIEW HERE) And yes, i was very much ready! Immediately i catch a whiff of a dry pine forest. The needles arent crushed: you dont get a sharp citrusy piney stinging sensation in your nose, nor does it smell anything like pine scented cleaning product. it smells just like the hinoki incense i used to burn by koh do. quickly it starts smelling like church incense, indeed very mediterannean like it was in reve d'ossian. There is something beautifully medicinal and herbal going on, almost like an ancient apothecary. it is dry, the smokiness is minimal, it is resinous and so calming. i want a steamy bath with this fragrance. And yes, that is all it really is: incense. sure, it is not the exact same as every other incense perfume, and incense comes in all kinds of varieties anyway. but this... this one smells so humble. so true. so religious. it feels like gnosis. Because of its simplicity yet defined character, it is perfect to layer it withe everything. and i usually hate layering! but so many perfumes work well with a realistic and pure incense like l'eau trois, that i cant help myself. it combines well with olene, fleur de peau and eau moheli by the same house. but i also combine it with relique d'amour to amplify their holiness. Basically, this whole experience has taught me how dangerous it is to jail yourself in your own preferences. If i didnt actively try to expand my horizons, i would have never enjoyed this beauty. lets see if i'll ever like an oud !

I don't get the incense as much as others. But this has been a grower! It doesn't smell complex, but it's just the kind of smell I love. I would say, it's the best PINE fragrance out there. The incense, and herbs, spices, accentuate, and enrich the pine. This does not smell old or dated, but it's very raw in a beautiful way, natural, not refined, perfumy. A wonderfull realistic pine forest, with Mediteranian herbs and balsamic richness. A true Diptyque classic. This is 70 % starkly realistic pine. It's like crushing pine needles and sap, raw and realistic. I love it. It's like Tam Dao, in that Tam Dao has the most starkly realistic Cypress note. This also has much stronger Myrrh note than frankincense. It smells somewhat medecinal, in a good piney way. Tam Dao is like a cleaned up, crisper, more modern version of this, with cypress vs pine. The camphoraceous myrtle makes a fine old accord with the pine, giving it a nice aromatic Mediteranian flare. Mediteranian kitchen spices of oregano etc, remind me of Ambre Sultan by Lutens, but this doesn't have Amber, but is rich in resins of Myrrh and Frankincense. I do not think this is linier, as it progresses, I pick up new spices, accords Ebb and flow. I am getting beautiful whiffs of mentholated pine. This is going to grow on me, I can tell. When I first sniffed it, I recoiled a bit, due to the old, gloomy, dated feel. When you get beyond that, you begin to enjoy it more and more, as you see it for what it is, a very fine, high quality, great blended classic. It feels like a very fine antique fragrance, unchanged from the way it was in 1975. There is nothing cloying about this, it smells wonderfull. I liked a reviewers comment, that it smells like a potpourri of raw incense material, before it has been lit. This is a warming fragrance because of the resins, yet it's not heavy because of the fresh herbs and spices. Diptyque is my favorite house, very sophisticated, pure, fragrances. I'm glad I found out how to purchase this from the Diptyque site. They ship express from their warehouse in NYC. This is an oldy but a very goody from 1975, a Diptyque classic. A happy blind buy for me for sure. PS: All the first impressions of it feeling old have faded, and it's become a favorite Winter fragrance, when I want to be transported to a Winter pine forest. Many speculations on the name of this fragrance, that means "Water Three" in English. There's no real mystery here, though: it is simply the third fragrance that Diptyque issued. I tried it ~2yrs ago on the skin after a visit in a Diptyque store in Paris, and remained so impressed that I kept it on my wishlist for all that time, even if my precise memory faded out a bit. So, when I spotted a great deal and ordered it recently, it was a half blind buy and I was a bit nervous. Here is my full review: Opens with a blast of spiced aromatic/balsamic notes (an impression of rosemary/oregano given by myrrh and spices I guess). Then the spices tone down a bit to leave the front stage for the myrrh to shine, but are still very present (probably caraway and/or cumin, possibly some cloves and/or allspice), and at that stage, it vaguely reminds me of Goutal Ambre Fetiche. The myrrh will dance during the whole drydown, back and forth, with a very dry dusty (non-smoky) olibanum resinoids note (with a blackpepper facet, but not a sharp blackpepper like in Bois d'Encens) and the ladbanum that will envelop the whole creation with its resinous greeness and a hint of sap sweetness that keeps the juice from leaning too much towards masculine. While I have an issue with SL Ambre Sultan's bay leaf note, I love it in Guerlain Bois Mysterieux. Same for the oregano/rosemary note, that I struggle with in Amouage Interlude, but love in PM Or Black. Here, it's all an interplay, perfectly tailored, and I love it! Performance is nothing exceptional, nor nothing to complain about, as expected for an EDT. Like a previous reviewer stated, the quest for the perfect incense will never end. That said, for me, it might have with this one (and Tauer Incense Extreme). On par with Trudon Mortel in terms of style and quality (but Diptyque has slightly better performance). To note that this one has been issued ~30 years before the trend of incense-centered fragrance was started by CdG... Whaaaat a journey! In a nutshell: a churchy incense, that very probably inspired several other ones, in particular Goutal Encens Flamboyant. Masterpiece by Serge Kalouguine! I just sniffed this for the first time. This was a blind buy but I had been eyeing it for a long long time, years. I read the notes and description and was instantly intrigued, I just wasn't ever able to track down a sample of it and then finally just decided what the heck, and took a big risk with purchasing it. ..I absolutely love this perfume, but its not one I would wear for any person but myself. This is a deeply meditative and personal type of fragrance. When I close my eyes and smell this off of my skin, it transports me to some deep memory -perhaps not an actual memory from my mind- but, like a deep memory of my soul somehow. I think it brings up many memories at once that are all loosely interconnected with spirituality for me. It's like I'm sitting outside in a dry forest at night. This forest is plush, but the dirt is dry. The air is balmy and cool upon the skin. The sky is dark but still resonating dim light. It is very quiet and peaceful. Somewhere nearby there is burning frankincense and myrrh. It is perfuming the air and comes to me by gentle breezes. This fragrance is both familiar and incredibly mysterious. Unknowable even. Not for everyone, but definitely for me. I am very happy to have this beautiful scent in my collection. It is quietly stirring, and makes me feel both calm and stimulated at the same time. Not much projection on me, and I can't speak on longevity just yet. I wouldn't necessarily want this to project, though. It's my own little fragrance experience, you know? I'm sure everyone would have a different experience for sure.. I know some people would probably dislike this. Or people might just think you smell of church..Interesting at least, if you get the chance to whiff it its worth a whiff!

It reminds me of beaches in Greece - the shrubs and trees that you usually have to pass before you reach the sand. There are usually thousands of cicadas making noise you'd never forget. In fact, L'Eau Trois seemed so close that I spent maybe a year before actually buying a bottle, thinking: "Why should I buy something so literal?". And when I finally did, of course it grew up on me. Then,my second thought: "It smells so close to pure frankincense oil, why did I buy this?". Yes, get some frankincense oil and you'll be quite close to L'Eau Trois, really. The difference is, it's a fragrance composition after all: it behaves like a fragrance and it has different facets, depending on what you focus on, your skin, the weather. It has a piney brightness, a dry herbal angle, the slight sweetness of mastic between other resins, frankincense from that times when there were still no humans to burn it. Notes you recall not from perfume descriptions but from your own archetypal memory. With all that natural oil vibe that could otherwise make you think of a pharmacy, L'Eau Trois takes you outdoors to a natural landscape with no flowers or leaves, only the thick aromatic secretions of plants - some scorched by the sun and some in the deep shadows. Feels like eternity. You know? Like that beaches in Greece that most likely look the same way they looked 10 000 years ago. Same with L'Eau Trois.

Tested once in a sweaty New York summer, and again in Toronto winter. In both cases I loved L'eau trois, but in each case it opened a bit differently. In the summer, L'eau trois started more vegetal, with my friends noting that the pine was accompanied by the smell of celery from the caraway. In the winter, the pine needles were much more dominant, with the biting quality of some kinds of herbal medicine. The heart was largely the same in both environments, which is to say, frankincense and myrrh with a subtle woody accent. This certainly fits the bill of a "churchy" fragrance as others have described; for most of its wear time L'eau trois evokes strong memories of sitting in a Catholic church service, with the resinous fumes of a swinging censer wafting over the lacquered pews. The drydown is linear, but this just affords more time with what I think are the highlights of the composition. L'eau trois has average performance for an EDT, with modest projection after the first ninety or so minutes and an overall wear time of around six hours depending on the temperature. I don't think of this as a problem -- L'eau trois isn't designed for mass appeal, and if it were to project more strongly or overstay its welcome, it would lose some of its meditative character.

This is a first impression and a comparison to the vintage. I loved the vintage as it had a gooey rich pine sap note. I love a great pine note, which is hard to find these days. It was the main heart note for me in the vintage, then the myrrh and incense. I sold my partial vintage bottle for about $350. I thought it was discontinued, and was surprised Diptyque is selling 100ml for $190, so I ordered it... It's quite different from the vintage. It's lighter and brighter, not as dark and resinous as the vintage. But it's different in a good way as well. It's well blended, and very natural and wearable, enjoyable. The myrtle and rosemary top notes are more prominent. It reminds me of Tam Dao by Diptyque. - The sandalwood and myrtle fragrance. Very light hints of the myrrh, pine and incense. I think they're using low concentrations of the oils of pine and myrrh. So, it's dissapointing that it's not close to the vintage. But it's still a good fragrance and value for 100 ml. PS: As I've now gotten into the dry-down, the natural pine in comming through stronger. It's more green than ashen incense. So I'm bumping up my rating by .5 to 8.25/10. the longer i've had this one (nearing a year) the more i not only adore her on a personal level, but i *respect* her for her utter uniqueness and unconformist attitude. i remember my first impression upon smelling l'eau trois was that the pine note was similar to the pine in my beloved serge lutens fille en aiguilles, but then went down a different route with a metallic herbaceous edge from the myrrh and rosemary that i found incredibly chic, captivating, and unexpected. a year on, though, my nose can no longer detect the similarities to FeA i initially picked up on, likely because l'eau trois developed a personality all her own. i find i tend to grab her when i'm wanting to feel strong yet mysterious and to carry a beauty on-my-own-terms. totally unisex, this one i'd recommend any myrrh lover to check out in particular. contrary to it's reputation, too, i find l'eau trois last ages on my skin, with the last note standing being the cozy frankincense.

This is simply the best perfume ever made in my opinion. It makes me think of Paris in winter. It is melancholic, deep, simple in many ways and still mysterious. It is unassuming, devoid of things like status or affect. It is myrhh perfection. It is also a mature perfume, for someone who has some insight into life and its lessons, or simply someone who is thoughtful and insightful, whatever age you are. It is a real experience and boldly melancholic. I don't wear it often because I want it to remain an experience. It is a walk in Paris at night, alone, going to a movie and enjoying the beauty of a city even though time is fleeting, a wonderful but empty and lonely place. The sadness of happiness. One BIG PROBLEM: PERFORMANCE. You cannot smell it on your skin beyond 15 minutes. I also tried on clothes and it was extremely weak. When I use 3 sprays on onw spot you can smell it, but that feels like wasting a lot of the perfume.

I got this as a blind buy - it was supposed to come with the 2ml tester before opening the bottle (direct from Diptyque) but it wasn't included and I was too impatient to wait for another thing to ship. Fortunately my £145 gamble paid off and I love this so much. It triggered such a strong sense-memory of my best ever outdoor nap, which was in a pine woodland on the Amalfi coast, next to some temple ruins. I was totally alone, around lunchtime, the hot sun on the pine needles giving a dry resinous pine, with some wild herbs also carrying in the breeze. The opening of this is like the walk into that wood, and the dry down is the scent close to the ground when I rested my head on my bag to have a little nap. For me, this is dry, herbaceous, woody mediterranean scrub land. The incense notes for me just add warmth to the whole composition, catching the scents rolling in the warm breeze.

I love incense. One look at my collection and it is obvious. For a long time I have been on the lookout for ultimate incense. But the more incense perfumes I own the more I realized this is impossible objective. There is no ultimate incense, this is such a beautiful multi-faceted material that there is not a single interpretation that would have it all. Some are gorgeous smoky, sweet and church reminiscent. Some are cold, astringent and peppery. L’eau Trois is the most natural - it is essence of prime quality Omanese olibanum. Unlit luban - the smell left on your fingers when you take a few pieces from the bag before you throw them on the burner. Rich, piney with cold dryness - almost camphorous - that warms up on your skin. I really really dig it. It’s crazy to realize something like this was created in the seventies! So niche, so much ahead of its time!

I smelled Eau Trois the first time couple weeks ago without knowing its notes. I was really intrigued by its Frankincense, woody and spicy scent and had been thinking about it for a whole week before buying a full bottle. To me, Eau Trois opened with very strong Frankincense and subtle notes of Myrtle and spices. Then the scent of Myrrh and pine joined in and became the dominant notes while the Frankincense retreated to the very background. This scent stayed as it was for a long time without much changes even after a few washes. On my skin, Eau Trois is a heavy but not loud fragrance with moderate sillage and excellent longevity. IMHO it is quite unusual as a fragrance but for some strange reason I found it very comforting and really enjoyed the woody earthy dry down of it.

Cool, herbal opening with oregano, myrtle, pine, rosemary and camphor. In the past when I've worn this, the slightly too herbal opening would transition to a lovely, holy grail pine straw and sap scent with a quietly smoky resinous base. L'Eau Trois made it on to my wishlist as the perfect scent of sun heating pinestraw on a hot summer day - a nostalgic trip to my childhood in Georgia. Trying it again after a long haitus, I've found that there's much more of a metallic note and the oregano is dominant. It's not wearably herbal, just reminiscent of pizza sauce. I've changed medications and diets, so maybe L'Eau Trois no longer favors my skin chemistry. Such a shame, but perhaps it's a good thing to no longer pine after a discontinued gem.

Okaaay, I'm owning one bottle since february, it was a total blind-buy btw...honestly this fragrance is on an another level. The incenses are feels so holy, so ancient. I tested it on a very cold weather and this end-march springtime, and the fragrance is operating differently: on the cold weather it feels more warmer, dryer and smokier, right now the green notes are much more noticable than before, it feels like a new fragrance. The drydown is kinda the same, freshly cut pine wood scent, magnificent. Definitely want to buy a second one once it runs out. ♥ If you want to smells like an old wooden orthodox temple (in a good way) this is the scent! (I dont think it blind-buy safe for everyone but give it a try if you can)

I really love this fragrance It smells so natural, so right. Holy, not churchy. It opens up fresh with green rosemary and terpentiney frankinsence which slowly evolves into earthy myrrh and caraway. The caraway combination of myrrh and caraway smells like the floor of a fir forrest on a sommer day. The frankinsens lingers like fresh morning air for the first half hour of the myrrh caraway transition. My only problem with it is that its so incredibly weak sauce. 10 sprays is not really overdoing it. The sillage is also extremely intimate, so this one i mostly for your own enjoyment.

This is a unique masterpiece. It smell like church on mediterran coast, somewhere in middle Dalmatia (Croatia) where i grew up...church and all herbs that you can find around, sharp, bitterly, rich, aromatic, natural, sunny and cold in same time... Many of Diptyque perfumes i can't call perfumes, they are ambiental compositions that takes you to other place, like olfactory photo...this one is calming, meditative, but not sad (ok, maybe just a little). I don't like this scent, i Love it from first smell.

For me it was love at first sniff. The smell of a beautiful church. I love all the notes of this perfume. It's not a perfume for everyone, which makes it seem like my own little secret. So secret indeed that actually no-one could notice it, including me, no matter how many sprays I used. This, with Opus 1810 from Penhaligon's would be my my two "frustrating fragrances". Both absolutely beautiful but with such little performance that it makes it difficult to pay the high price.

My absolute favorite from Diptyque. This is an olibanum resinoid overdose with a healthy helping of myrrh, and the smell of not only pine sap but of pine needles both fresh and the desiccated fallen ones on the forest floor. My nose detects the rosemary, myrtle and caraway that add dimension; all great complements to the olibanum and myrrh. It is the olfactory embodiment of crepuscule in the woods, solemn, sacred, and divine. A stirring creation.

I appreciate this so much. To me, it smells like taking a walk in a Mediterranean pine forest when the sun is high and the heat brings out the scent of pine leaves. That, combined with a handful of natural, unlit myrrh and frankincense tears. It smells like a place more than a perfume, and has an amazing meditative mood. I like to wear this when I have a quiet day to myself, or when I want to remind myself of summer hikes in the Mediterranean.

Smells exactly like entering an Eastern Orthodox church. Icons, bright light of candles, myrrh, and incense. Cried out of nostalgia when I tried it for the first time. A masterpiece. This is for all my Eastern European girlies who have a complicated relationship with the Orthodox church. Love it, though it's not very strong, so you have to reapply it a lot.

This is the church-y-piney-foresty incense I have been looking for for many years. It is absolutely divine! Unfortunately, it is not very longlasting, but I don't mind respraying it. The price is reasonable, considering the size. I would wear it in autumn and winter, but I may consider to wear it also in cooler spring or summer nights.

Unlike any other perfume. This is so unique, herbal, modern and rebelious. I have never smelled anything like this, so I find it therefore somewhat hard to describe. It is at the same time simple and complicated. It is straight in your face boldness, which is urban, strange and above all Parisian. A rare, hard to find, masterpiece.

Without a doubt, this is THE incense fragrance. Warm, smoky, resinous and dry, with enough aromatics to give lift. For me, the best phase is the deep drydown, when the oils have warmed and melded on the skin, giving off whispers of incense when you move (luckily also the longest lasting phase). A masterpiece

with this masterpiece i finished my search of incense scent. churchy air scent.balsamic scent with base notes olibanum and pine with mirth and rosemary and a solid base of mirrae plus some spice .super performance and super price?what else?wearable all year. 9/10 Incredible parfum.

First impressions: imo the best myrrh-centered fragrance around. Myrrh keeps its bitterness/burnt feeling, unlike others where it is rounded by vanilla (ie. Armani Myrrhe Imperiale). The third creation of Diptyque, that is now 45 years old, and apparently still a contemporary hit.

I had this a few years, and was getting mostly pine. I wore it tonight after a long time, not wearing it; I loved the intense realistic pine, and the after 15 minutes I got a great ashen incense. I realised this is in my top 2 incense, fragrances, along with Amouage Memoir Man.

Growing up my grandmother had a pine drawer full of a large assortment of herbs & spices, some of the more rarely used ones were many many years old. This smells exactly like a memory of opening that drawer. A blend of ancient spices in a puff of dry smoke. I really love it.

I have no idea how it was created, but this is exact smell of Greece coast (especially Crete) during the summer. All herbs and air from the sea mixed together with warm dusty mix. Just perfect and I’m very very very disappointed that this creation is no longer available.

for now i can o only write that my search about incense scente is finished.this is a masterpeace. incense balsamic.what else? pure olibanum with pine..rosemary and mirto...a touch.od mirrae and litte spices...Incredible performance and Price. 9/10 wearable all year.

It's the first Diptyque that i took and I still love it. It's one the rare case when i bought the same perfume twice. Incence and aromatic. I would only like it more heavy as longevity. Still my favourite Diptyque

Most speak of this as an incense fragrance. That it is. But the strongest predominant note is PINE. Pine is a favorite note, this has about the best gooy pine sap note I have experienced from over 750 reviews.

Inspired by the Greek coastline of Halkidiki region, this herbal, frankincense masterpiece, travels you, through a supernatural feeling, to old times. The typical Diptyque superpower!

Scent of the Catholic Church . Great <3 Scent like a : Mazzolari Alchemico.

Rosemary evergreen spice incense labdanum Eau Trois resonates with me on a particular level. There is something incredible about the way it seemlessly moves from one rather robust and dry note to the next without ever overwhelming you. Rosemary almost veering towards thyme in the opening with green evergreen facets, true and pure, like crushing twigs in your hands, gives rise to ever so slight leathery cumin/warm spice mixture, which slowly dissipates into thin air, like a puff of spice powder, gone in minutes. Quickly the resins take over. Frankincense is an incredible material, same with myrrh, there is intense complexity to be had in the raw material itsself. I get a very pure evocation of frankincense resin in Eau Trois, not incense smoke, but rather the resonant tart, woody, dry, sticky feeling of smelling a chunk of unlit resin in your hand. Certainly myrrh plays a role here as a backlight, but more prominently what i smell here is labdanum in the base. Labdanum is a sticky goo in isolated form, thick like a balm and incredibly warm and sticky. This is absolutely what i get in the dry down, a slightly medicinal yet delicately sweet almost tart plum-like warmth. An absolute favorite of mine for calm peaceful days. A meditation on natural simplicity, calming the mind and at the same time fulfilling the senses. Those not familiar with minimalist naturalistic scents may consider this to be a bit alien, but those open to the concept will likely appreciate it.

Edit (2020): Revisited this today. This is really intense, nasty fragrance for the first 30 minutes. Very very resin-y and burnt (my sister described it like cat pee). While it doesn't stay horrible, when it does mellow down into something that I think resembles what I must have focused on last time there is still something unpleasant that continues to distract me. It's smooth, burnt, resin and herbal. I see the inspiration from Catholic incense, but it's really hidden. If that note had been elevated and the forestry notes muted it would have worked a lot better for me. But there is something here. It's such a weird fragrance. It really evolves in my mind quickly, from the unpleasantness to the Catholic imposter, to mossy wet earth... very odd fragrance. It's not bad, but it's not in my opinion wearable. This is something worth smelling and thinking about, but off putting on the body. Original (2017): What everyone else is saying, sweet, resinous, dry. It's lovely, but low projection. Very calm. Earthy but clean. Makes me feel like I'm on the coast somewhere, with the heat of the sun at my back and the cool breeze of the sea ahead of me. It's really unique, very beautiful. 7.5/10 maybe even an 8!

I like this one! Another tea oriented scent that was not supposed to be made for. This smell will be easy to describe if you're familiar with ripe Pu-er Tea , a type of dark tea (Their marketing can make a duo set by cooperating with Cartier XIII , a raw Pu-er Tea interpretation). Just imagine a piece of ripe Pu-er that is put inside a old woody closet. Even though I am a tea-holic, I won't put this scent on. Brilliant combo, I don't know how they did it. Still a new journey despite I have tried hundreds of scents. A must try if you want something woody and NOVEL! Rating: 8.5-9.0/10

L’Eau Trois is unique—a fragrance that starts off buzzing with rosemary, pine, rockrose, and a tangle of wild herbs. It’s extremely dry, like wandering through a Mediterranean herb garden under the blistering, dry, midday sun pondering spiritual topics. Then it softens, settling into an extremely realistic myrrh—resinous, earthy, and comforting in its simplicity. It’s an intimate scent, sitting close to the skin. A scent of its time (1975) it gives an elevated, subtle, new-age aura; metaphysical Parisian chic.

This is a wonderful scent of midnight mass for those of you who are familiar. This perfume is much weaker than the real smoke in the the air- however- just as dry. Woody like bark, and a stump, almost with a hint of green moss growing there-- spicy like the kitchen cupboard of they who yearn to live in far off places. It seems to have Frankencense in it. I really do love it, I do really wish it was longer lasting, with a bit force, a bit more flesh on it's bones if you will.

Opens very piney. This can definitely give the impression of a clean toilet (thanks pine-sol). However, those familiar with frankincense will understand this fragrance. It is a raw and bright portrait of resin incense. Also, it's best to use a lot. In small quantities it reads less sappy/sacred and more vague/disinfected. In addition, the sillage and longevity are both incredibly limited. Definitely a good choice for other olibanum enthusiasts. 8/10

A windy winter, scents trying and failing to grasp onto something. It's dangerous to go outside so you find ways to entertain at home with food and wine, ready to hibernate through the long nights. The spices and candles mix to remind you of comfort in a place that never was. A real sense of hygge.

Dry Oman Frankincense (Boswellia Sacra?) front and center, very similar to Bois d’ Eccens by Armani. Absolutely no projection, very much skin scent. Amazing smell just wished it projected a bit better and lasted longer. My favorite from the house.

Pine sap! With a hint of myrhh. Really nice. As if you smelled pine bark in the forest. Longevity is a bit below average on me, but it is because of its nature, that it is a natural perfume. Nothing synthetic.

I must own an extremely poor batch, I get 5 mins of longevity max (no exaggeration). Bought from a Diptyque store.

Smells like an amazing Orthodox Church

This is a very herbal, aromatic, and spicy take on a church incense fragrance. This opens with a lot of rosemary and frankincense. Quite a few of the reviews mention that the frankincense outweighs the myrrh in this one, but I think it may just be that the pine combining with the frankincense giving that impression. I find that the myrrh and frankincense balance out in the drydown. The herbs in this give a bit of a savory effect, which I'm not the biggest fan of, personally. This quickly became a skin scent on me, but lasted 4-5 hours.

At first I didn't like this, it was too astringent and the caraway was too strong. However, after letting it calm down for an hour I thought it was nice. I enjoy when it softens and the frankincense comes out, it's a beautiful frankincense. I would recommend it to people who like frankincense, and/or men who like more old-school herbaceous offerings. Would I buy it again? No. Lasts about six hours on my skin and it doesn't project very far.

This has to be the strangest smelling fragrance I've ever sampled. The closest I could ever come to this is Tom Ford Sahara Noir, which I like only as a layering fragrance. I think the evergreen note in here really throws me off. I appreciate the inspiration behind this, and I love the smell of Eastern Orthodox and Roman Catholic incense, but this is not for me. This is very resinous. On me it lasted about 4 hours on my wrist. The pine note seemed to disappear early on, and it was tolerable, but I can't wait that long for a fragrance to get to where I like it. As I like heavy orientals such as Youth Dew, Opium and Cinnabar and almost all oud fragrances, I thought I'd sample it. Sorry, not for me.

Although this is a very interesting composition i do'nt find it wearable. it' smell a bit like a good indian food or a strange ambiance spray.It starts with a rosemary note and slowly melds in a burn caraway phase before turns oily and resinous, but always subtle. Cutting edge scent for the brave at heart.

Oddly, I do not get the pine or resins. I get smacked with the garnishes of a bloody mary, especially celery. Disappointed that I don't smell the lovely parts that others are experiencing.

One might argue that it would be a better deal to buy 10 ml of boswellia serrata and 5 ml of Ethiopian myrrh, mix em up with 100 ml of pure alcohol et voila! - for half the price. But, it's not quite that simple. True masters can make the complicated seem easy, and Diptyque really are masters of what they do. L'Eau could be described as a minimalist dialog, between a top quality frankincense talking effortlessly with a base of great myrrh - and that wouldn't be wrong, as such, but there is more at play here. Even if there aren't really supporting roles, there is definitely a technical team. The opening blast of frankincense is illuminated by by terpenic pine and rosemary, who like great gaffers ensures that the olibanum shines bright, smooth and warm. Myrtle ensures a camphorous sparkle, while dark spices play subtle shadows, making sure the scene doesn't get too overexposed and flat. In the second act, myrrh takes the scene. Warm as well, but of a darker complexion, sweeter and more grounded. The myrrh is cleverly styled by a caraway which brings out the anisic element of myrrh, while I feel something like opoponax behind the scene aswell. I really appreciate L'Eau Trois, and I think it grows on me every time i wear it. But it is not an action packed performance, nor a romantic blockbuster. It is a soulful short story of a scent, uplifting the spirit and making one contemplate.
