Lunamaris

What a peculiar and unique fragrance that I really adore. I tested samples of the new line from Diptyque months ago (except Lilyphea, still yet to try) and Lunamaris was an immediate stand out. Something about is familiar, yet nothing like anything I've smelled before. Needless to say, in the middle of winter, I bought this thinking "this will be perfect for a warm, humid day". Well, here I am, finally really "wearing" it while on a tropical beach trip and it is completely perfect. I've been obsessing over the smell all week and couldn't recall what the notes were, so I'm just now realizing..... these notes make no sense !!! Is there pepper? Sure! Is there something floral-(maybe)-rose-like going on? Sure! But..... incense, labdanum, and amber? I'd say ..... maybe? but in this, I would have never guessed those notes as the 'main profile'. I typically associate those notes with "spicy/warm" fragrances which this is not! Maybe the blend of each, in small quantities, with whatever is actually happening (salty, mineral, slightly sharp but in a pleasant way) builds this fairly complex fragrance. The notes & the inspiration also don't align to me? But the inspiration/imagery, being mother of pearl with water droplets coating the surface, makes complete sense. All of this to say, I really enjoy this fragrance and have found it to be perfect for a humid beach day & evening. It's elegant and unexpected. Finally - I also want to say, I'm usually NOT A FAN or fragrances that claim to have "watery" or "sea" like notes/essences. Out of the many, many I've tried, they ALL seem to incredibly synthetic. This fragrance avoids that completely!!!! I also completely disagree with comments saying it smells like Fleur de Peau... this is nothing like FDP (Iris, musk, powdery).

A bit of a frag novice here, but I wanted to put my two cents inn, as I (too) had expected something a little different compared to the scent profile above. Others have mentioned sharp rose and an almost mineralic quality, which I definitely pick up on. Like if you buried a bunch of roses in the sand on a windy beach. Yes, sharp and peppery. Yes, a little sour (on first sniff I wrote down 'pissy'). The amber is faint on me, but there's enough to make it cohesive and grounded. To me, on my skin, it's kind of like Aesop Rozu's shy, ghostly little sister, whisper-singing to herself in the bathroom mirror, imitating her more complex, grown, interesting older sister. Like others below have mentioned, this scent might be too simple and not unique enough to some. The promotional image of a pearlescent sea shell is spot on, if you ask me. Cold, sandy, quiet, almost transparent but with an eclectic, nature inspired sheen that makes it noticable. I absolutely adore it.

★★★★★★★★☆☆ Lunamaris feels like a warm hug. Diptyque describes it honestly - very clear pink peppercorn, incense, and rose. Imagine a cozy, renaissance-style study where a fireplace crackles and you are wrapped in a soft velvet blanket, falling asleep in a comfy chair. Extremely linear - the scent stays the same until very last sniff. From reading the reviews it seems to be the least popular among the Les Essences collection. I disagree with many comments that it lacks uniqueness. For me it's one of the rare warm spicy perfumes that won't evoke any impressions related to sensuality or sexiness. It’s all about comfort and elegance, and I was totally surprised. Longevity is fantastic. One spray lasts over six hours on my skin, and it clings to my sweaters for like forever. The downside is the price, even when compared to other EDPs of the house.

If you have ever looked into a lover's eyes to be greeted by an infinite cosmos, if you have ever dunked a sunbleached seashell back into shallow ocean water to unveil it's true prism... then you have already begun to read the text of Lunamaris. A scent that shimmers metaphysically, phantasmal aquatic songs ringing out from the spiraled belly of a conch shell. Pink pepper sharp and aromatic. Tiny dune-blooming floral dotting the coast like stars on an inky expanse, kissed gently by a salty breeze. Incense pressed into talismans by servants of the Olympian gods, lit by sparking seaglass like flintstone. A poem delivered from the half shell, a kiss underwater with your eyes open, the light broken by the waterline into infinite amber and aquamarine ribbons.

The sleeper of Les Essences, Lunamaris can be easily dismissed as just another pink pepper musk. With patience you'll notice that pink pepper giving shimmer to the softest labdanum and incense. The effect evokes the luminescence of mother of pearl in moonlight, beautiful. Lunamaris, on skin, is a skin scent, what your skin will smell like after a nice bath, maybe with some lovely labdanum soap, a light dusting of the finest powder and a quick meditation in a small, open temple with sweet incense in the air. Lunamaris lasts a decent amount on skin with soft sillage, longer and more noticeable on fabric. A note, Lunamaris layers beautifully with Corail Oscuro.

not sure why people are calling this boring. i went to the diptyque store with my mom today, and upon first sniff, both of us kept saying this is magical. we both kept returning to smell this after smelling all the others in this collection. it's definitely incense-y, but in a very gentle but captivating way. its like frankincense and labdanum are oozing gently out of your skin, definitely with spicey whispers from the pink pepper. i get why the description says its like flecks of moonlight on the sea, as this really shimmers. works for all seasons. instant favorite. even bought the bottle, which felt insane but necessary.

Lunamaris perfectly evokes the imagery behind its name (I very rarely, if ever, find a perfume's marketing aligns so well) -- for me, this fragrance truly does smell like moonlight rippling over a dark sea. It's a heartsick, dreamy fragrance with a mythical edge. The olfactory representation of a cool Mediterranean night -- salty breeze, your bare feet in the sun-warmed sand. Mineralic, minimalist, rosy, spicy. Totally linear, with moderate longevity & sillage (though I do have to spray a bit more than I normally would). Quietly addicting -- enjoying it now in winter, but I think it'd truly be the best on summer nights.

Luna Maris is fresh, clean, and airy. It opens with a crisp, slightly salty brightness that feels like sea breeze on skin. On me, it stays light and refreshing without turning sharp or too citrusy. While the amber notes may seem like it’ll dry down warm, it doesn’t. I like how it feels effortless and elegant—perfect for days when I want something subtle but uplifting. The scent lightly stays on skin for 6 hours or so and I get a whiff every now and then. Totally mesmerising and I happily got a full bottle without much thought. I’d recommend trying a sample first on skin for a full day.

The opening on this is stunning. It’s floral and mineral with something in it that feels shimmery. Maybe the pepper? On a test strip, it mellows a bit, but the notes stay the same. On my skin, it opens the same before drying down to a mineral-y rose. I get just the slightest hint of something that reminds me of Diptyque’s Fleur de Peau under the other notes. About an hour in, it’s mostly just the mineral notes and whatever it is that reminds me of Fleur de Peau. I didn’t love this on my first pass, but I’m enjoying it more the second time around.

Listen... this perfume has a chokehold on me. To me, Lunamaris is distilled moonlight. A luminous waltz of soft incense swirling over silver waves on midnight water. Pink pepper sparkles like distant stars, fading into the resinous glow of amber and labdanum, grounding the airy top notes with magnetic gravity. It feels like poetry unfolding on the skin. Ethereal, yet very wearable. A delicate interplay of light and shadow, a scent that lingers like the echo of a dream you never want to leave. Utterly spellbinding and otherworldly.

Lunamaris is a sleep-like memory; it calls forth unto me the scent of a timeworn teddy bear, well-loved and long-held. The tranquil depths of slumber, dusted by the gentlest beams of the moon... a soft vulnerability suspended in a pearlescent sheen of mother-of-pearl. The essence itself is neither particularly intricate nor unique, but it possesses an enveloping, tender warmth to which I am curiously drawn. It slightly reminds me of L'Orpheline. On my skin, it lasts forever.

This is my favorite fragrance from Diptyque. It's extremely versatile, all seasons, day or night. Dramatic yet understated. I could drown in it. I'm surprised to see salt/mineral accord not listed, along with rose. To me it smells like a mineralic version of Le Labo's Rose 31 without the cumin. Highly recommend if you like an incensey, salty rose. There really is something sparkly and shimmery about it.

I wholeheartedly agree that Lunamaris embodies incense perfectly. An article on Fragrantica shares the same sentiment, and I concur. On my skin, it lasts well, creating a subtle aura that I catch whiffs of throughout the day. While it may not be revolutionary, its execution is flawless, making it irresistible. Diptyque consistently impresses me with their fragrances.

I finally purchased a full bottle of this after falling in love with it via diptyque's Les essences discovery set. As much as I like Eau Rihla, I find it extremely rich, and Lunamaris is more pleasant for me when in the comfort of my own home. I reserve Eau Rihla for sales meetings on the road. I spray Lunamaris every night before bed. It's cozy af imo.

It’s a really nice peppery scent with lots of refreshing spicy notes and nice (and quite light) woods in the base. The projection is very good too, but it doesn’t smell unique for me. This beautiful pink pepper note can be found in a various fragrances with a less expensive price tag (eg ToyBoy Moschino).

a lovely ode of reverence to mother of pearl. lunamaris is a very light, sophisticated scent. it has a slightly powdery scent, reminiscent of old fancy soaps; along with something almost tea-like. it evokes something ethereal and angelic — powerful yet fleeting. like dripping moonlight into a bottle.

Tried this in store today and it was instantly a need. I tested it on my skin and can still smell it 8+ hours later. The notes blend well, it’s a clean spicy smell. It’s unisex and sits close to the skin but you can still smell it in the air as you move. Very beautiful.

easily Diptyque’s best imo — great signature scent option, wearable in any season, perfectly unisex, good longevity (lasts on my skin for around 8 hours). unfortunately it’s crazy overpriced 💔 a quiet, foggy spring morning just before dawn. <3

a rose and it’s thorns. it smells like the altar of a really beautiful witch, really gorgeous perfume. reminiscent of ELDO eau de protection but less sweet and spiced, more resinous.

this is really pretty, an ambery very cozy fragrance with rosey nuances from the pink pepper. Super cozy and versatile for the colder months, love wearing this before bed

This smells almost identical to Fleur De Peau. It’s lovely but nearly a copy.

Lunamaris: Quietly Unique Perfection Out of this collection, Lunamaris is my favorite. It’s a wonderful example of what niche perfumery should be. The concept here is beautiful: it's meant to evoke the shimmering quality of mother of pearl. And that comes across in the scent. It feels very gentle, clean, and sophisticated all at once. What really seals the deal is the drydown. It’s gorgeous and stays with you all the way to the end. It has a beautiful character—it's unique without being unnecessarily loud. It truly feels like a quiet, elegant light that just lasts. This is a very solid release from Diptyque. If you want a scent that has depth, a concept, and reasonable performance without being aggressive, check this one out. 8/10

It opens with a briny note, similar to what I usually find in pink or black pepper fragrances. After it settles, I get a beautiful smokiness, reminiscent of gentle white smoke rising from incense. It's quite meditative and, in my opinion, would layer beautifully with greener scents. There's a subtle skin-scent sexiness to it. The opening is a bit headache-inducing, but the dry down is heavenly. I just wish it came in 30 ml instead of 100 ml.

Theres a strong rose note in this and its rather nice. When it starts dryingdown, It smells almost exactly like moschino boy toy but less masculine (if that one is even considered masculine). Not my style of perfume and i dont see myself wearing this, but its good and attractive. It does have a makeup perfume store smell to it, like douglas.

On my skin this is identical to Le Labo Rose 31. Identical!! I really like that perfume but not sure how to feel about 2 identical ones both from 2 high end brands. Also, I don’t think the moon/sea vibe matches this perfume at all. More like a rose grove at night, it’s quite earthy and mysterious.

Smells like a sea witch in her moonlit seacave, with calm, shimmering waters lapping up against cold, sparkling minerals in the surrounding rock. A little too much of a savoury briny quality for me, but if I had to distill the moon and a nighttime seascape in a bottle, this would be it.

Got a Sample at the store, lovely scent, longevity 5+ hours. Stays close to the skin. The price point is ridiculous. 300+ USD. In my opinion, it is not worth the price point!

it's like l'eau papier's sweeter sister! or glossier you and l'eau papier's love child, if you can imagine that.

This is so rosey. It almost reminds me of the rose note in Delina. Not bad, honestly intense for a Diptyque

did I get a bad batch? I blindly tested this and now that I'm seeing the notes I am baffled - labdanum?! ambery?! I don't get any of that... to me I immediately thought this must be a sea/coral inspired scent - begins stringent, then settles down to a weird sandy smell. OK, I tested again mid review. I do get pink pepper. I still smell a weird sand note, but it settles way less stringent. What I am missing is the "peculiar and unique" smell other reviews get - it smells good and clean, but it's just a clean pink pepper... there are so many other more special renditions of pink pepper. I personally don't think it is worth the price point. However, I totally understand someone loving this and splurging. To me there is just so many other renditions of pink pepper for less.

As it dries down smells like peppery slightly smoky elegant rose. Too bad I have a lot of similar rose perfumes with this type of profile, I appreciate that it is less aggressive than my other peppery rose scents. However a sample is enough to know I won't buy any more of it. Rose scents are very hard to make unique...

Rose soap of a vintage style. This reminds me of perfumes put out by Chopard, Lalique, and others in the early 2000s with a bit of 1980s fancy soap thrown in. It's pleasant and has good performance. But ..yawn. For this price I'd just pick up a vintage bottle instead.

This reminds me of Rose & Cuir by Frederic Malle, but it is less elegant and more on the screechy side. I smell geranium, labdanum and some sour pepper. On the verge of a dislike but I love the FM perfume so it barely passes.

Mainly just pink pepper and ambery note. Very underwhelming. especially with that horrendous price tag

Smells like Delina Exclusif ??

Diptyque Lunamaris presents as something ethereal yet sharp, a fragrance that feels silvery, almost like moonlight could be bottled. On first encounter, it strikes me as stringent - dry and distinctly mineralic. There is a marked sharpness and a peppery note that borders on sourness, providing a stark contrast to more traditional, sweeter ambers. While Lunamaris does have an amber quality, it's not the comforting warmth you'd typically expect - it's dry, resinous, and austere. The incense here isn't warm or cosy either; it's precise, clean, and crystalline. Though the musk adds a subtle depth, the overall simplicity sometimes feels too stripped-back. Lunamaris leans more towards being sharp-edged rather than elegantly composed. Ultimately, Lunamaris is intriguing in its austerity - cool, minimalist luxury that lingers impressively through the day - but perhaps lacks the warmth and complexity that might make it truly unforgettable.

A gossamer amber. The amber is dry, smoky, almost mineral. In between the veils of incense smoke there’s flashes of pink pepper. All this would have been dreamy but, as with Lilypheá, she went straight to soap on my skin. And not even a bougie Diptyque soap – I got chalky Dove bar, bitter and fatty. At least this was the most low-volume scent of the Les Essences lot. I feel like Lunamaris is the wallflower of the Les Essences party. If you take the time to chat, do so away from her more gregarious siblings. And definitely test with skin chemistry! The folks that won her favour seem to report that pearly amber I briefly caught on paper. Mental Snapshot: A siren ceremony, hidden amidst the craggy tidepools. Raw ambergris smoulders in abalone shell braziers. When you try to join the revel the creatures startle, hissing into seafoam, its miasma sour against the ocean air. tl;dr: fickle pearl 🦪🧽

This one was an immediate scrubber for me. I thought I'd like it based on the reviews below comparing it to Rose 31 without the cumin (absolutely not), or a moonlit night - but I just can't stand it. To me, it's a loud, obnoxious rose that instantly brought me back to bad dupes of Delina, MFK's Gentle Fluidity Gold, Atomic Rose, Intense Cafe. Not for me, and seems to be a huge contrast from other more nuanced Diptyques that I love.

This fragrance is both beautiful and extremely harsh and off-putting. It smells salty and ethereal but I would not classify it as a fresh scent as other comments have said. The pepper stands out too much and it gives me a headache, making it a perfume I enjoy smelling but do not want to wear. I think as a niche perfume it executes it’s name very well but I would not recommend it.

A firm no from me – another one of those scents that on my skin only give cheap soap, and not in a good way.

Based on the orher reviews, I would expect to love this. But. The sharp pepper, the cold incense and/or the mineral aspects are giving me a very unpleasant medicinal vibe. It’s like very (very) expensive Vick’s vapor rub. I ordered the sampler set and have scrubbed this after both attempts to see if it gets better with time. Guess it will be handy next time I have a bad cold and need to clear my sinuses.

Beautiful, airy incense. This is my second favourite in the lineup, with Lilyphea being the first. Lunamaris smells meditative (likely the frankincense), calm, and iridescent. It really does capture what mother of pearl would likely smell like - it’s dry, slightly mineral, and clean. A couple of images come to mind when I wear Lunamaris - first (like mentioned below) is a beautiful sea witch’s altar. There are dried rose petals scattered from a recent spell, and her incense just finished burning. The incense is clean and transparent smelling - not churchy or smoky. She has a collection of abalone shells that she uses to hold salty sea water, wafting a slightly mineral scent in the air. The second image I get is what I picture House of Bo Casablanca to smell like. I haven’t smelled it before, but have heard it described as a mineral-incense clean hotel type of scent. Lunamaris totally makes me think of a white stone house in the desert that functions like a spa, with linen curtains blowing in the wind. The floors are unfinished stone and the smell of clean incense clings to the linen curtains. Everyone is wearing white linen or crisp white bathrobes and there’s a saltwater pool somewhere within the spa. Very clean, very transparent, and dry but in a good way. Almost like you put on an ambery lotion before going into the saltwater pool, and now that you’re dried off the smell of the salt on your skin is mixing with the leftover lotion and clean bathrobe. So lovely!!

softer than satin and lighter than snow. rauschenberg's white paintings 1951. pearlescent plumes of body powder glistening like souvenir snow globes in the sun. pellegrin's use of frankincense is perhaps closest to our uk exclusive opsis: revealing the raw material's undersung dusty and unrepentantly powdery facets. labdanum sets the textural atmosphere, a slightly sweet and talcum-like base upon which rests unlit incense. those looking for powerful and modern scent profiles will undoubtedly dismiss this one the fastest of our essences collection, for smelling like baby powder or for not lasting long enough, but those with the temperament and patience to listen will surely find lunamaris the most nuanced and rewarding of the line. further references could be lutens' l'orpheline and diptyqye alumna olivia giacobetti's passage d'enfer - both technically "oriental" incenses that speak uncharacteristically subtly of quiet musks and contemplative shrines. easily my new signature for the upcoming autumn winter season, wear lunamaris to intrude in citizen kane's impossibly snowy childhood flashback montages, or simply to get the best sleep of your adult life.

glossier you's impact on my psyche and nose cannot be understated - it came out my first year post-college and truly for a woman in her early twenties living in a big city at that time, glossier was IT. 'you' was the first perfume i got that wasn't just from a department store, and while it's kind of laughable to call it niche now, it kind of felt that way at the time. glossier would mail samples of 'you' with any makeup you got and i remember bringing my sample on a trip to europe and wearing it and getting so so so many compliments. to me, 'you' still smells like walking around prague and vienna in november 2017, listening to sza - delusional, hopeful, messy, pretentious, bubbly, new to it all. all this to say that since 'you,' i've noticed so many perfume houses trying to replicate that kind of pink peppery skin scent. i really like lunamaris, and maybe out there is another girl in her early twenties who gets a sample of this and wears it around and in nine years will think fondly about lunamaris too. thinking of that girl and hoping nothing but the best for her. <3

This should be right up my alley; I love all these notes and pink pepper works amazing with my skin chemistry. The SA at my local Diptyque even provided a few samples for me to try just based on how similar this sounds to other frags I love. But I'm a bit confused about this one. I don't pick up on any of the notes listed except for the lightest hints of pink pepper. Looking at the notes listed, and at its description as an ambery oriental fragrance, I was expecting something warm, with a hint of sharpness contributed by the pink pepper. Instead, I find this almost aquatic or mineral-like on opening and find that Diptyque's description online, stating that the fragrance "evokes the iridescence of mother of pearl, recalling the gentle, gleaming reflections of the moon on the waters of the sea" a more apt description than what is listed here. As it dries down there's a sharpness to this that's a lot like Chanel's Sycamore. It's pleasant and performs well but has neither enough complexity to entrance me or cohesiveness to comfort me.

Pairing this with Orphéon body wash this warm summer morning — absolutely beautiful. I feel so expensive. I want everyone to smell me. Lunamaris’ is not the conventional amber, incense-y fragrance to me. It’s so light and airy. I feel like I should be walking through the streets of Milan, or Prague. What a high-society, old money Me smells like. I know that doesn’t help much for those who aren’t me LOL. But god I truly feel like I should be wearing the biggest black sunnies, with a fresh blowout, can-totally-walk-in-heels-all-day-long-without-breaking-a-sweat attitude. Fresh powdery clean skin from the Orphéon, but just this side of grandma where it smells like an heiress. Lunamaris adds this salty mineral touch, a hint of depth and glistening light on the surface, like, oh who is this woman by the water? Who is she wearing? Would she even acknowledge my presence if I were to ask? Love love. Too bad it’s so expensive ᅲ

Wafts of the dry-down on Diptyques tester strips basically reminded me of a number of ambroxan-based, ambiguously "clean" skin-like scents with a crystalline shimmer. It was kind of nice but lacked a little complexity. The first spray was more interesting with the pink pepper coming out, and then eventually a sharp, clear incense note coming to the forefront. A bit resinous, a tiny bit of some sour, juicy floral note for added freshness. The similarities to rose perfumes perplex me though (the noir by le labo??). I interpret it more as a minimal, clean incense perfume with a glowing, warm amber base. edit: very much a rose scent! I see it now.

I can’t believe I’m the first one to include Clue’s “The Point” in the “this reminds me of” section. It has the same deep sea salty marine mineral note. It’s almost as if Lunamaris exchanged the jasmine tea for rose hip tea and lit some incense. It’s also giving me the image of those seashell shaped soaps from the 90s if it was a dusty pink and sat next to behind-the-toilet potpourri. I can see this being an easy reach for a pretty girl (gender non-specific pretty girl). Idk if I’m that pretty girl. I’ll stick to my Orpheon.

For me this is silvery and cold and sharp. It feels like moonlight across a still sea. Sharpness, dryness and wood; amber is present in the dry down, but it’s not sweet amber. It’s amber washed up on an uninhabited island in the Baltic with driftwood after a storm and super resinous - frankincense is not what I smell here - definitely resinous but it’s that dry amber. This smells like moonlight would smell if it were possible to smell moonlight - which I think was the honest intention behind this fragrance.
