Rising Mysore 3

Rising Mysore 3 has landed. They weren’t kidding making the box purple! This is an orris bomb! I think if you’re looking for something similar to the first two editions, you may be disappointed HOWEVER; this is a super creative, incredible composition on its own. The opening has facets of the first and second iterations: Holy basil, juicy/fresh citrus, spices....but almost immediately RM3 transitions into a super creamy heart. The orris, in combination with creamy Mysore sandalwood, as well as supporting white florals create a buttery, rich, white-cream like effect that is just to die for. The richness almost reminds me of a combination of Rising Mysore with Ensar’s Iris Ghalia; albeit, no musk, just smooth, velvety orris. In the drydown, you do get reminants of the signature D&Z spicy “twang” as Brandon from Therapeutic Fragrance once put it, along with the classic Rising Mysore Japanese Incense accord; but again, through the lens of white, clean, smooth orris. For those of you new to Rising Mysore, this is definitely a different take, but a worthy one nonetheless. I’d go as far to say that this is a safe blind buy, and the value is absolutely incredible. Not only to you get 100 ml’s of a sandalwood-dense eau de parfum for under $250, but the hefty dose of real orris in here just blows the competition away. This is a reference quality take on real orris. Velvety, vanillic, rich, smooth; do not hesitate folks.

I got to try a small sample of this, and it's just captivating. The sandalwood in this is the real deal, and the other notable aspect of this is the beautiful holy basil, an accord/note that isn't seen in many fragrances. I'm wishing I had a larger amount of this to spray, because it is very soft despite the huge note list, and I feel that I'm not quite getting a complete impression with the small sample that I tried. This is a top 10 scent for me.

I got a 10ml split of this and it’s really quite something. Most of my preferred scents are ‘western’ or even American indie and I don’t have a lot of experience with Eastern scents. I do have some. Just not as many. This is the first time I’ve experienced Dixit & Zak. So it’s very possible that this isn’t as much of a distinctive standout to someone with more quantitative experience than me, but to me it’s just so unique and elevated and wonderful. I’ve been to India twice, and I grew up in a Canadian town with a lot of Indian friends and colleagues and good restaurants. This scent is like an idealized distillation of the smells in the market, or even the street outside the market. Tat mix of pungent and sweet spices along with something funky. I don’t know what funk is, and it is light - but it is there. It’s elevated and idealized, like the purest ideal or dream of those spices. I only have 10ml, but I love to reapply through the day. This’ll likely be gone in less than 3 months, because it’s just so much fun to exist under a cloud of it. It’s pretty strong but not obviously so. My wife has yet to say it’s too much. It reminds me of friends’ family kitchens in East Van growing up, the smell of a multitude of spices and generations saturating the cabinets. But a distilled and idealized version of that scent. Some secret (to me) funk and sweetness and spice that wafts through your day in a way that is similar to but still very far away from LDDM like if Bourdain did an episode devoted to spice markets, or the street food served just outside it.

While the note-list manages to fool one into thinking that Rising Mysore 3 might be from the same stable as vintage Guerlains & Rojas, yet it is a soft summer-appropriate fragrance. Despite a slightly reimagined formula, it essentially provides the same Oriental-Fougere experience as its predecessors. For those who might have missed the previous iterations or are not familiar with other Indian artists, the only redemption factor working for Rising Mysore 3 is the sumptuous interplay of Orris & Sandalwood. Like it’s two previous predecessors a natural light Oriental fougere with a pronounced sandalwood base. The perfume opens with citruses, lavender and slight hints of rose and jasmine. The heart is mostly spices but in this round there is a pronounced orris butter note at the end of it that stays throughout the perfume wear. The perfume settles on a powdery base of tonka bean and sandalwood with slight vetiver, labdanum and vanilla. Overall a pleasant fresh scent which is pretty undemanding and unobtrusive in spite of so many ingredients. The masculine leaning perfume has moderate sillage and longevity and is ideally suited for warm weather but resprays may be needed during its wear. Enjoy!

While the note-list may give an impression of mid-sixties Guerlains or Rojas, the fragrance is a modification of their previous release. Nothing new.
