Dolce & Gabbana Pour Homme was the fragrance that sparked my fragrance addiction, so I started collecting the D&G lineup.. When I heard about By Man and how rare and hard to find it was, I knew that it had to be something special.. I managed to by myself a 1.7 ounce bottle for $200 from a reputable store a couple years ago when I was doing a lot better financially.. When I first sprayed the fragrance on my arm I was a little confused and thought it smelled of what some would call "old women" perfume.. But than I gave it another chance and actually wore the fragrance, and that time it smelled completely different! I fell head over heels in love with it immediately, and after a little bit more experimentation with By it had already replaced D&G Pour Homme as my favorite fragrance.. I like masculine men's fragrances but do not like when they are over the top macho.. By Man has some androgynous qualities, which works perfectly for me.. But I think all women interested should definitely go for By Women which is equally a masterpiece and one of the sexiest women's fragrances I have come across.. By Man goes on light but than warms up to the skin and starts to turn into the sex beast that it is known to be! Once it warms up it starts to project and leaves a trail of the gorgeous fragrance behind you.. It also last quite a long time and has a remarkable dry down.. The notes are all so blended well that it is very hard to tell them apart from each other.. I have read all different types of note breakdowns for By but this is what I smell.. When you first spray By Man you get a mix of all the notes that blend together oh so well, lavender, pepper, and nutmeg.. In the opening there is this gorgeous unique "nutty" note that I suspect is the nutmeg but it also could be walnut if it really happens to be part of this fragrance as I have heard.. I never have smelled a nutmeg note quite like this one before, it is really nice.. Now on the tester bottle of By the top is listed as follows, Three Heridones Elixir, Pepper and Nutmeg Leaves.. Once the "nutty" note starts to calm down the fragrance starts to really come together.. The mid consist of Lymph Lifescent, Lavender and Artemesia, and the base consist of Sandalwood, Leather, Gaiacwood, Ambrox, and Amber, and of course there is tobacco in there to.. All these notes blend together to create something that is simply magical.. A gorgeous luxurious powdery fragrance with nuances of all these wonderful notes.. When you wear By you feel like a sex god, like a wild animal! This fragrance smells very high quality, powerful, sensual, and captivating! This is Dolce & Gabbana's true masterpiece! By Man performs extremely well even all the way into the dry down.. The dry down is simply heavenly and words can not describe it.. I have searched for similar fragrances and have found one some that are similar.. But when you compare them there is something about By that is far superior.. There is something magical in By that sets it apart and makes it smell out of this world! I have yet to find a fragrance designer or niche that can compete with this! D&G ought to be ashamed of themselves for discontinuing this beauty! By makes "The One" smell like cheap dollar store cologne, that is how good it is! I have no idea why this D&G discontinued By Man and By Women, they both are classic masterpieces that would have done very well with time.. I have received compliments from strangers when wearing this and no one can deny how good it smells.. I save By for extremely special occasions, or whenever I feel like treating myself to its glorious scent.. If By was still being produced I would be bathing in it everyday! By Man is my favorite fragrance out of every single one that I have ever sniffed! It is just simply amazing! 10 out of 10!

Amazing stuff, it’s shame that D&G discontinued this gem. By Man had been released in 1997, I guess it’s ahead of the time. It’s modern, yet classic, I mean this formula will never go out of style. I’m not really going to talk about the individual ingredients, the whole is just greater than the sum of individual ingredients, a perfect blend, it’s amazing specially coming from a designer brand. Opening is bit sharp, but once dry down it’s a pure bliss. Creamy sandalwood and leather finishing is so smooth and addictive, floral touch in the background make it even more interesting. I’m not sure where the floral touch come from, definitely not from Lavender, but no other floral ingredients are listed in the note pyramid. Price is very subjective, specially it was used be less than 100 bucks once. For me it’s worth the asking price right now, may be not in terms of quality, but in terms of overall joy and pleasure. I can relate this to music, a well-designed solid state amp is technically much more corrected with close to zero distortion, but a flea watt SET amp (which is generally considered highly distorted) paired with a high efficient speaker is more musical and joy to listen. I’m sure most of my Amouages scream quality compared to this, but may not be necessarily better smelling. In fact no other perfume in my collection excite me this much. And the good thing is it last, 8 to 9 hours on my skin with average projection. This is good enough for me. Parfumes Vintage Intrigo Devastante, or Devestante Instense for that matter manage to get very close to By Man in the opening, but unfortunately the dry down is not there, yet. I hope they can come out with a more successful clone in future.

There have been many slightly sweet and spicy sandalwood based fragrances created that have come and gone over the years. One of the more notable ones was Gucci Envy. And along side that, we have Dolce & Gabbana By Man. I have to say that D&G made a huge mistake discontinuing this one. Maybe at some point this style of fragrance had been explored enough and folks were ready to move on? But just because something goes out of style doesn't mean it should be abandoned, especially if so well orchestrated. Perhaps D&G should have had a better marketing program. By Man has a similar vibe to Gucci Envy, but is spicier and more peppery. It's truly one of the more versatile and "attractive" sandalwood forward fragrances I've come across. I started out with a mini (overpaid) and then got lucky on a 50ml bottle through a local venue (good deal). But how disappointing to see so many fakes out there and such a thin trickle of inventory appearing on "that auction site", sending market prices through the roof. It's too expensive. So I'm plundering through my bottle and once it is exhausted that will be it. 2015 will be my year of enjoying D&G By Man, and then that will be it. If you can find a bottle without breaking the bank, go for it (resale is easy, if you don't like it). But just keep in mind that you can't have a long term romance with By Man. It's fleeting... just enjoy it while you can.

@ Snoopy...you are 100% right that with all the accumulation of knowledge it would lead companies to replant. Unfortunately it never happened and it would leave the Purfumery's to stop producing such an amazing GEM. By in today's market would come in as a niche fragrance similar to Bond 9 and many others priced at 299.00 and more. I absolutely love the warm woodsy/amber notes, my nose picks up a definite floral vib either carnations and or red roses. The deep masculine aroma of leather and tobacco create a real woodsy-spicy-oriental aroma which completes this fragrance. Both guaiac wood and pepper awakens your senses creating a deeply SEXY juice. Longevity and Silage is excellent lasting well over 8hrs and being able to smell this juice about 2ft away. Overall opinion, Out of all D&G's frag's By is far non the best. Dolca&Gabbana by D&G is a close 2nd. I'm referring to the original version which was manufactured in Italy not in the U.K. This juice could easily be another gender bender...why not. The quality of most fragrance made in that decade will never come back...so sad :( I'm so fortunate that I found 2 bottles, one is sealed and stored away from humidity. Easy to rate this exquisitely crafted juice...a truly elegant fragrance. 100% liquid gold....10/10 ☺ Those who own this juice know how desirable this fragrance is. Viva BY.....

★★★★★ Maybe it's memories and nostalgia, maybe it's the fascination of experiencing this playful "tin can" presentation at my father's vanity... no it can't be. When I was a child, I was surrounded by beautiful fragrances from family members and friends, therefore I was doomed to fall in love with perfumery. In my early thirties now, nothing completes my appetite for perfumery like this discontinued piece of abstract beauty. Abstract because, By Man, is a fume that infuses lavender barbershop classicism with oriental exoticism, all wrapped in contemporary ingredients of synthetic nature. It has it all, the timeless masculinity of lavender, the naughty sexy sandalwood character that ties it with the animalic theme the By line conveyed, but also a floral romanticism that is presented with hedione, which made this ultra modern in the 90s and most certainly still relevant today. Alberto Morillas had a vision, and this vision was bottled to suit all season, all occasion joys. Classic, sexy, romantic and refreshing. What more could one ask? PS: Thank you DUA for hitting it close with your offering. Interested to try Nuhi, observing the similarity in the notes.

Nutmeg, lavender and CREAMY sandalwood. While some of the male fragrances from the 1990s and backwards in time in my personal opinion are extremely overhyped (yes, I'm looking at you Habit Rouge and Caron Pour un Homme) others are just outstanding. By for Man is one of the latter. The juice is so thick it's almost an oil. The scent itself is a little animalic and musky, so much that it gives off a slightly dirty, almost sexy vibe. A spicy yet sweet, peppery and woody oriental with a touch of fougere. The opening actually leans slightly feminine but the hedione/jasmine effect in the heart notes is just to die for. The drydown of sandalwood and tobacco gives a creamy smooth smokiness that is excellently executed. Very well composed, unique and with just the right hint of animalic musk. The bottle is a love or hate subject, but my best guess would be that the striped zebra should symbolize the animalics in this. One of D&Gs finest moments and unfortunately, in todays market I cannot find any fragrance that comes close to this - bye bye By...

For my current impression, this is essentially a less complex Gucci Envy without the ginger and incense, and a sweeter body with more sandalwood. Sandalwood, leather, amber, lavender, and pepper are all there in common with Envy and By Man. Still, it's a terrific fragrance on its own. Is it worth the going market prices these days? Not for me. I'd rather spend less money and get Gucci Envy (although that one has gotten rather expensive these days). But I certainly won't turn down a bargain on By Man if I happen to find one (can only hope!). This one is terribly fraught with fakes. The "black cap liner" thing is fading out, as there are some fakes appearing with white caps now. Hardest thing to fake is the translucent gasket. That's the giveaway. Don't buy this sealed as you're taking a big risk... as some sellers don't even know they have a fake. Btw, if you think Ed Hardy Man is better, you've DEFINITELY gotten a fake! ;-) A solid 9.5 on fragrance, 7.5 on longevity, and 6.0 on value based on current market prices.

This absolutely smells like what I, as a teenager, thought adults smelled like in the late 90's. D&G By Man is appealing and well-done. It also very much smells like the sum of its parts and I'm hard-pressed to pick out individual notes except for sandalwood (a sculpture of sandalwoody aromachemicals, more accurately) and powdery musk. As for the other notes--lavender...sure! It has an aromatic/sweet texture. Nutmeg, artemisia, and pepper? I guess I also get a slightly herbal/spicy quality. Citrus and hedione? Yes, there's definitely a fresh diffusiveness in the top which lasts. It's a great example of the fresh, sweet, woody, ambery scent that was characteristic of this time period. I'd also say that, unlike other scents that are "of an era" (i.e. 80's fougeres, 70's masculine chypres, 90's aquatics), it doesn't feel anachronistic and outmoded. Sad that it's so mythical in status. Carven Homme is not at all a smell-alike, but a cheaper version of a similar theme.

I have an Italian clone of this and this seems to be the most costly juice they make because they gave me less volume of it than they were supposed to.... I don't know how close this is to the original I'm basing my opinion and review on the clone I bought in Italy. I bought this in a period I had already bought many fragrances and this one despite being quite pleasant at first felt a little boring at first... Until I realized I have only a little bit of it left, just by spraying it too many times and being too curious about it. I'm not sure if it's by Max Gavary or Morillas and at first I thought it's too sweet to be Max Gavarry's but I really think it is. This thing is pretty good. It takes a while to appreciate and it definitely made me appreciate sandalwood more. I still like Masculine more I might even like Masculine more than Pour Homme actually. If this has been made by Max Gavarry then it means Dolce and Gabbana had an in house perfumer for half a decade.

I first discovered this fragrance (like many others) via my older Brother 11 years ago. I was intrigued as to what it would look like as I found the bottle to be incredibly garrish and brash. I found to my delight that the fragrance contained within was anything but. This is by far my favourite fragrance to date. I am not and never have been a 'one fragrance' type of guy. I often deliberately leave some of my fragrances for months only to re-discover them at a later date, but this is the one fragrance I would have above all others. I just recently paid the equivalent of $20 US for a 4ml sample as I have tried in vain to get a new bottle with no luck since it was criminally (in my view) discontinued by D&G. Most reviews I've read seem to indicate that those who like this fragrance REALLY like it - me too!

picked up a small sample from the perfumed court just because i was curious..wow, it is a very nice scent , i can see why people love this one..but what a pricy devil to find.almost regret it..lol.. but had to try it. worth a sniff.very nice frag. I would wear this one if I could find some at a reasonable price. have tried bidding on it before, but it got out of hand. one of these days I will stumble across this. I did find a 10 mil size atomizer that d&G put out it was legit , was pricy almost 50.00 but I really wanted it ... I do wear it sparingly but it does smell very nice. lots of compliments the day I really sampled it out. my wife really liked it quite a bit. my son wears the one and he told me he thought this was a superior scent.

Lavender, nutty, creamy sandalwood, a dusting of spice. Behold a veritable thesaurus of compliments, its unusual to have many reviews and no naysayers. That's because this fragrance is (was?) just so good. Certainly different to anything else i have now, at least in OG form. Alternatively £6/ml for a sample at the wonderful fragrancesamplesuk (the price tells you just how rare this is). Or buy Dua Pour Homme 30ml for £38 from scentitlondon. I found what little ByMan I got hold of adaptable and easy to wear with decent performance sadly all gone but the Dua is just great and IMO is a safe blind buy, even if you never smell the OG. Very hard to mark this properly given bottles are impossible to get other than pay ££££ but 4/5 seems fair.

Sometimes it's a bigger torture having a bottle of a fragrance you know you can't afford to let run out, than looking for a bottle you've never had. This has been my case with this masterpiece. Reality is if this was crap you still don't want it to run out due to rarity, but you have liquid gold in a bottle that the world needs to smell on you, so what would you do? Jokes apart, this is truly unique, age has done a fine job with this amazing sandalwood laden Concoction, it smells rich, full and smoooooth, sincerely perfection to me. It works really well in the fall. Rich Lavender at the base holds everything together perfectly, if you can get it without paying with your blood, pls do it gets even better with time. Classic stuff.

This is very much a scent of the outrageous, extravagant, and indulgent 80s! A heady/ spicy/ aromatic oriental powerhouse that has "machismo" written all over it! Housed in a zebra bottle, which is by turn novel and kitschy, it roars and beguiles. The juice is wonderful -- zesty citrus and dirty lavender opens it, giving it a zing. Then mixed in with these are spicy pepper, artemesia, and warm woods, giving it body. Leather/ amber/ sandalwood anchors it at the base for some heft. Better than Dolce & Gabanna pour Homme (which came much later) or even the ever popular The One! Strange why this was discontinued! This is one sweet-smelling, sexy Italian! Difficult to find and price-wise, very steep! Recommended!

This is something I really miss. It was my fathers secret room where he had some nice things including this perfume. I secretly sprayed it and thought no one could smell it (10 years).. and the next day I could still smell it.. and I asked my father like if he had a perfume and it smelled something like a spicey flower.. he said i have a perfume and it smells exact like you... I can’t forget that moment of embarrassment and he was like wait till you get older.. 2 years later he bought me a 75ML and I was so happy with my zebra perfume! I can’t find that vintage one.. that smell maybe not the best perfume ofc. But for me a very very special one!

A masterpiece, and sadly and unexpectedly (to me anyway at the time in 2007), it was discontinued and for the past 18 years or so, original bottles have been for sale at exorbitant prices online, however even those stocks are dwindling and/or showing their age. I've previously given my 2 scents worth in review form (I think this fragrance was a masterpiece), for those interested, Jubilee Scents produces a very good approximation By Man - 'Inspired by DG38', with moderate projection (not as good as the original), however the DNA is a very, very close approximation. I hope that helps those of us who need/want this D&G masterpiece in their lives.

Rewritten review: Wow, this is something else! Dolce & Gabbana Man is a milky, creamy, powdery, sweet, soft scent with awesome longevity power. I would like to place it in the gourmand-genre. The top notes are a party to me: refreshing and soothing at the same time. The base is lots of amber, vanilla (I seem to be the only one who gets vanilla) and a bit pepper. On the skin this scent lasts a day minimum and has a warm and sweet, natural feel to it. On clothes this lasts for at least four days. The scent coukd be feminin but has an edge to it which makes it more masculin. 8,5/10

I can't really see the comparisons to Ed Hardy Man. BY Man is a wonderful fragrance, but it does smell like something from another era (dated, as in very '90s). They don't make scents like these anymore. Everything nowadays has a ton of tonka, and mint, and iris, and whatever else is a la mode (looking at you OUD). BY Man is more traditional in its fougere construction, using lavender and nutmeg with a touch of leather and sandalwood to create something uniquely masculine. Ed Hardy is a simple, woody-sage fragrance with a fruity start. That's just the way my nose sees it.

I first bought this in 1998 and wore it all the time. It is the scent I wore when me and my wife first met. She absolutely looooves this, as almost all females do. It's baby making juice. It was a beautiful, unique fragrance back then and now that it's dscontinued it's even more unique. Head and shoulders above most of the dross that's released now. I was fortunate to find 2 50ml gift sets for less than $150. Now I can't keep my wife off me, I have to use it sparingly because I can't afford a 4th kid lol 11/10 all around.

I am contemplating buying this one again since this was one of my first true loves. It now sells for $500, when back in the day I bought it for $80. It's one of those things where I wonder if it will smell as good to me now as it did back then. I loved this one when it came out, we did everything together. Went on dates, went to the gym, went to work, you know,... spent quality time together. I just wonder if we get back together, and if I smell it now, would I still feel the same way? A case of the Ex....

This is my favorite d & g fragrance of all time! I hate that they discountinued this scent! It is ndeed a classic & still popular! It is a smell you dont really come across because alot of people dont wear it! Its very distinctive. You will truly turn heads on this! This is in my top 3 frags! Hard to get, but if you can its a beauty! Altho considering the type of scent it is, I would not suggest someone spend over $100 of this on a blind buy! This is thee only frag I gave a rating of 10/10!!

By for men has to be one of the best colognes of all time. The sandalwood note is what really takes over, and smells so exotic when mixed with the spicy notes. I have gotten soo many compliments on this fragrance. It's such a shame that Dolce & Gabbana discontinued this. I give them credit for the new The One EDP. But they seriously need to consider bringing this back. Does anyone know why it was Discontinued. I have heard so many different stories as to why it went off the shelves.

What can I say about D&G By Man, this stuff is just special. Always has been, and now that it's been (criminally) discontinued, that just makes it even more special. Unique, manly, sexy as hell and lasts and projects all day long. Not only do I love it, but apparently everyone who smells it on me does too. Definitely one of my all time favorites. One of the best fragrances there ever has been and probably ever will be. D&G you're crazy for discontinuing this masterpiece!

It's such a shame this scent has been discontinued and I'm so glad I have some left. I'm scared to use it though. This scent is in my top 5 mens scents EVER. It's beautifully unique. It smells a tiny bit like Star Anise to me, it has an element of it but it's also very spicy. I adore it and wish D&G would relese it again. It sell on ebay for £100 or more which is ridiculous!! This is a really good one for evening and nights out and lasts a really long time.

This is a pure masterpiece. Monstrous, huge, potent, long lasting yet gentle. Perfume Parlour version brings memories back, but sadly not really good. It is overbearing, and turns acidic, stringent fast. Kristiansand New York is a great alternative. Not a direct clone, but has all the aspects of the original i love. Kind of a lighter flanker, absolutely worth the try considering the price. Dua's replica is the closest to the original i've found.

@Houstcs - Are you sure you got a real sample of BY because the real thing is out of this world.. I also owned Ed Hardy a while ago and I did not see any similarity to BY whatsoever.. That would be like comparing Light Blue to M7.. BY is also a very complex masterpiece that sometimes takes time to understand.. As far as fragrances that are similar to it there is Kristiansand NY or Very Valentino, although they do not posses the magic BY does..

I remember I was about 13 when I first smelled this on my cousin and I immediately felt in love with it. I used to call it the “Zebra Cologne” because I didn’t know the name of it, so I went for the bottle design lol This is sooooooooo good! I can still remember the smell of it, it’s like you won’t find nothing like it. Too bad D&G discontinued it and you can’t find it anywhere. Whoever has a bottle of this is a lucky man.

Sexy, deep, warm, clean, masculine. One all my all time favorites. I had many bottles of it... Luckily now in 2021, I've found that Dua Fragrances took care of us guys who missed this beautiful fragrance, they created a replica Dua Pour Homme. Of course I got it, and let me tell you – it is just the same as the original! it is sooo good... This is one the best fragrances ever. Perfect.

I can't express how legendary this cologne is. This is the only scent I wear during Fall/Winter since I have a vintage tester that I wear once a week, and for the other 6 days I wear Dua Pour Homme (Which is a 99.9% match, dry down is slightly better since it's richer and last for almost 10 hours but it's always sold out). A must smell for sure!

When searching for an alternative for By Men, don’t forget to try Regio from Xerjoff. I know, it is a bit different, but is has a similar relaxed musky vibe and certainly is of good quality. Where By tends to be a bit milky (at least that is how I perceive it), Regio is more herbal and has more emphasis on lavender. Anyway, try for yourself.

Finally managed to track down an original 3.4oz bottle! I was minded to indulge in a niche fragrance that I've had my eye on, but seeing that Ebay unusually had a bottle for sale (typical when I look there isn't one, when I'm not looking one appears). I'm very happy now, just a bot scared to use too much of it!

Bought mine in 2016 for $280. Some say I paid too much for it, but I thought it was worth it. I know prices have skyrocketed since. This fragrance smells great! It lasts all day, and has great projection. Outstanding performance all around. A true masterpiece! What was D&G thinking in discontinuing this gem?

One of the best Oriental woody fragrances for men. This scent is on a mature and professional realm in spite of the bottle design. I wish D&G would put it back in circulation. It's so unique from other male scents that I've experienced. Scent: 8.5 / 10 Projection: 8 / 10 Longevity: 8 / 10

Does anyone know where can I find the authentic one? because two bottles that I have received are fake... P.S I don't think that christopher dicas is similar to this fragrance...maybe it has the same base...I think avon's intrigue was approached to this smell!!!

Beautiful fragrance! It is very similar to Azzaro visit - it has the same creamy spicy woodiness. ‘D&G By man’ smells richer on the dry down, and Visit smells flatter on the dry down. Get Visit if you want a similar experience for a lot cheaper, Both are great!

in a word this scent is sexy. Whoever wears this perfume is a sexy, confident and mature man! Outstanding! thats it and nobody does sexy the way 'by' does it not even close . This fragrance is sex in a bottle. Wish Dolce & Gabbana would bring this back.

Very masculine, exotic, mysterious scent with a subtle sweetness from sandalwood. The scent stays with you all day long. I had strangers (both male & female) complimenting and asking the name of the cologne... Too bad it's been discontinued!

One of the best perfumes to have ever existed in my opinion. I still have a bottle that I use sparingly and over half full. It truly is a gem and wish D&G would bring it back.

Absolutely gorgeous fragrance. 'Pour Homme' by DUA Fragrances is a spot on 1:1 dupe of this beauty with great performance and longevity. I think this can be quite unisex too.

Probably THE most unique and rare scents out there. Proud to have purchased it to my then bf. He pulled it off brilliantly with his uniqueness and rareness.
