Brown Flowers

I may update my review at a later time once I've spent more time with it but for now, since there aren't a lot of reviews up I thought this may be helpful for those interested. I (M40's) thought this may lean too feminine for me and whilst I think that could be true for some, I think this does fall pretty comfortably as unisex (depending on your preferences of course), particularly in the dry down. The initial blast definitely aligns with the name 'Brown Flowers' with a burst of drab floral accords. This gives strong vintage vibes and reminds me of old record or 2nd hand stores or my nana's house with pot pourri around. This lingers for a while and gives off some strong sillage but pretty quickly quiets down with the musk and coffee flower in the base becoming more prominent. After a few hours, I am really finding the aged citrus poking out and I am being reminded a lot of a more subtle 'Unknown Pleasures' vibe - almost lemon meringue like...am I crazy? Overall this is a lovely scent that gives 'moderate' performance and an addictive dry-down. Smells great on clothes! I agree the name could be more inspired. Perhaps 'Drab Majesty'?

Is it vintage or is it nostalgic? It's avocado appliances, amber glassware and macrame but in the comforting way of childhood corningware patterns and brown plaid couches. Brown Flowers is an era in a bottle. If you left it in a drawer with an ashtray full of Virginia Slims, it would become a literal portal to 1979. It's that one cool aunt or family friend that was the epitome of the chic woman you wanted to become. It's the free spirited neighbor that drank coffee from a glass and had a brother that was a roadie for Stevie Nicks. If you were there, welcome back. If you weren't, I hope it will inspire a deep sense of anemoia, a feeling of nostalgia or longing for something you've never known. *I most enjoy layering BF with a toasted coffee based fragrance like Akro Awake or Follow by Kerosene

Highly under-rated in my opinion. The detritus note makes this a perfectly suited autumn fragrance with a gorgeous, interesting, linear white floral scent. I adore this fragrance. I agree with others that I might be interested in something a bit darker, though the 'brownness' here adds an intriguing deeper sweetness. To me, this is a great example of the DS & Durga approach to fragrances. Easily one of my favourite purchases this year!

it’s warm, humid, intoxicating. it’s still, but alive and breathing. it’s unlike any other white flowers perfume- it’s heavy and muddy but i love that about it. i couldn’t get enough and i find it comforting. definitely feel the carrot and dirt and coffee. it’s earthy.

I really like it! And in my opinion I do understand the name association, there is something dried and past peak in the jasmine, and the coffee flower definitely adds a splash of brown to the whole experience. It’s a rich fragrance with a lot of character.

It does smell like spent flowers in a vase! This is very creative, but I wouldn't wear it as perfume. I'd keep it as an example of how extraordinary perfume can be.

This scent is very unique compared to other white florals+ coffee based perfumes that I have. What I mean by that is that while it’s super heavy on jasmine, the most of the other supporting notes are not the typical ones that we encounter in most floral. For me personally, it’s the first time I’ve tested a perfume with wild carrots, roots and coffee blossoms. And it does smell different than most jasmine focused fragrances. It has a strong vegetal, almost savoury, earthy feel in the opening. Don’t think you get any resemblance of a coffee scent in this, though it had listed both coffee blossom and coffee, it doesn’t smell like coffee at all. I’m bummed about that, it would have made it more to my liking, I love coffee in perfumes. I don’t particularly see the association with the colour brown when I smell this perfume, but it’s certainly very white floral smelling. It’s pretty, has a touch of citrus freshness and it’s very feminine. Nuances of citrus, carrots, damp soil and clean musk surround the coffee blossom and jasmine and make the scent a more complex one than just another white floral. Does this perfume worth the money?? Definitely not for me. While it has some minor particularities, it’s at core a (more nuanced) white floral. And unfortunately it’s not one of those intense, strongly projecting one. It would be an amazing one, cause it does smells pretty good. On skin, I have only tried Brown Flowers on skin, it’s gone in about three hours and while it’s there, it sits close to skin, doesn’t radiate in the air when I move my arm... To sum it up, it’s just another white floral fragrance, slightly sweet, slightly earthy, musky with underwhelming performance. Smells even better when it’s dried down, losing the wild carrots accord, but not for 150+ euros per 50 ml bottle! It’s so overpriced!!! I will be using my travel size this spring season and I will move on..

Sampling Brown Flowers, one of the more recent mainstay releases from the Brooklyn-based house of D.S. & Durga that it’s actually plausible to get a sample of, and it’s a fittingly-floral, mostly a mix of white and yellow floral vibes, quite pleasant, with a balanced woody and musky base, quite an agreeable, unisex floral scent that nonetheless leans stereotypically feminine and feels a bit unspecific, a pretty safe entry for the line that adds some variety without intriguing me too much, and its performance leaves a little bit to be desired while being decent overall. Its concentration and retail pricing are the brand’s standard EDP and $300/210 for 100/50ml, respectively. It’s sold in the US via the house website as well as great boutiques like Ministry of Scent and Luckyscent. 7 out of 10

I was quick to give Brown Flowers a "mid" review, but I judged too fast. This is a white floral, it is bound to have that lingering "commercial" feel to it. that doesn't make it a bad fragrance, but I was ready to find it basic. But after reading the notes and going back for a few more whiffs, I like this very much. I like the root and coffee base notes, it truly ignites this fragrance. this is a much more intentional white floral. It has that department store nostalgia but it's totally elevated. to me this fragrance feels studied, it feels classic and smart. I wish I got a bit more coffee.

Blind bought this for "the vibes". Oops. Agree with others that the name Brown Flowers is not the most descriptive nor evocative. Very white floral forward. Initial spray is pure jasmine. There's a drab and deepening of the florals as it blooms. Dry down after about an hour became more citrus forward with a hint of coffee. Overall a nice frag, subtly complex, light and wispy. I was expecting a more pronounced dusty vintage vibe something more along the lines of a Thin Wild Mercury frag. Oh well. Its still a pleasant and niche floral.

It's quite a huggable scent, very comforting and down-to-earth, not got enough of the dead flower notes to really distinguish it from a regular sort of dusty floral. It's got a bit of dried fig for me, but yeah, mostly a nice white floral, maybe a little bit of the ripeness of a half dead flower, just not striking enough, you kind of have to be looking for it. I'm looking for something much stinkier, more like how Queen Anne's lace is in real life, but it's genuinely very pretty, just not for me.

I find this really nostalgic. specifically it reminds me of deep late summer, we’re headed towards the evening and you’ve spent a long day playing outside with your friends. You can smell the dead grass and you’re watching bees die on the windowsill as the temperature starts to drop. The flowers your mom bought are drooping and the stagnant water is brown and full of mulch. you’re a kid so you don’t follow the weather but you know that this is the last day you’ll feel warm this year.

To me this is very powdery and musky, I don't get too much coffee. It starts out fresh, a little green and delicate, then develops to smell sort of vintage or antique. It's quite an interesting smell, it reminds me of digging through little boxes of antiques and smelling something sort of sweet, dry, and elusive. It sits quiet on the skin and lasts a good few hours. not sure if I would wear this but it's an interesting portal of a scent.

Honestly, it smells very similar to a lot of fluffy neroli fragrances I've encountered. Not the sharp green ones, but the soft white flowery ones. It has a dry earthy tone to it, sure, but if these flowers are dried, they haven't turned brown - they're miraculously still white but very fragile and about to disintegrate into powdery dust.

It's neat but a little tiny bit cloying on me. Can't decide between ok and like because I keep sniffing my wrist even though I'm still unsure about it. It's very different. I think knowing there's coffee in it ruins it for my psychologically. My brain wishes it were black tea rather than coffee

DS & Durga loves to challenge! I find that their perfumes are, often, more artistic than wearable. I do own a couple. So, I'm not a fanciful person. I don't buy into the idea of something because of advertising hype. So, when it's called Brown Flowers, and I read what Durga writes about it, dead flowers, brown velveteen tuxes and cheetah pantsuits, I laugh out loud .. But, here's the deal. This does smell, strangely, like the almost dead, wilting flowers on my table right now. That and loads of Jasmine.. Does it smell bad? No. Not at all...but I think this perfume requires a certain type of unconventional wearer... It takes me back in time to the late 60's.. My brother's girlfriend would stop by..she was this unbathed hippie chick, braless, tank top & embroidered hip huggers, a slight pit odor emanating, mixed with Jasmine oil that she bought from the PlumPit, a shop that sold music, black lights, roach clips, incense and other hippie paraphernalia.. This smells like Sharon. I was just a wee bit of a girl and I loved her. This perfume? Eh.. How's that for fanciful?😊 The drydown is straight up jasmine, dead flowers cleared away. Only average performance. In the end, it's just another jasmine perfume. I find Jazmin Yucatan to be imminently more wearable than this offering. And it's think it's overpriced.🤷

Brown Flowers goes on with sparkling citrus and some sweetness, almost like a lemon drop candy. There's some summery white florals as well. It settles into a dense ambered white floral. Basic but good. The "lemon drop" sweetness sticks around under the flowers. I don't get the promised "brown" at all. It should be called "Lemon Jasmine". And there's better, more realistic jasmine scents out there -- but let's be real, I'm never going to complain too much about a white floral.

Where’s the brown? I got nothing but light springy white floral from this but I expected a dusty old or dirt component based on the notes. It smells a lot like a more zingy white shoulders to me. Silage was weak and longevity low.

I LOVE DS&Durga! But this just smell like sweet jasmin and som musc. Boring. Super basic white flowers! I dont care about woman/mens fragrances, but this is feminin! I dont think most men would wear it.

Its a basic white floral. Its feminin! And the first from the house i dont vibe with.. not bad. No Coffee, no "brown" flowers!

It smells pretty much just like a really heavy white floral scent to me, nothing too special.

Vintage vibe with this scent. 70’s white floral jasmine, earthy and grounded. Mellow florals.

This smells like the rubber on brand new sneakers. Not for me. 6/10

I was intrigued enough to purchase a sample of this after seeing a review that likened it to the smell of a 1970’s sitting room. I was convinced I would sit in the niche camp of people adoring this fragrance....but sadly the first whiff made me feel only disgust. Straight from the bottle it is heavy jasmine with similarities to Lust from Lush, slightly ammonia or something chemical about it. I see other people saying ‘rubbery’ and to me it was reminiscent of the scent of those slime filled eggs that were popular in childhood. It dried down on my skin pretty quickly to a musky floral without any of the aforementioned unpleasantness. This fragrance feels heavy and I can imagine it being nostalgic to many people for their early life experiences of perfume. Think playing on grandmothers vanity table or being gifted a punchy set of perfume miniatures for Christmas.

Misery in a fragrance. Photorealistic compost bin. Yesterday's coffee grounds, sickly sweet old citrus, dirty carrot peels, wet ashtray, black banana. I don't normally get so emotional from fragrance, but the scent makes me feel so damn melancholy. It's rotten, forgotten, dense with regret. It's a bouquet (funeral flowers?): lilies, stock, white roses -- slimy and waterlogged then laid to rest. Spitefully bruised petals. Bitterness for what once was, now rotting, reclaimed by the dirt. Food for the worms. I tried to wear Brown Flowers a couple times in different settings and on my skin, it's instant disgust. DS & Durga are my favorite because of their mastery of feeling and environment, and for that I have to give them their (brown) flowers. Distinctly unwearable but a successful exercise in capturing such an organic odor.

EW WTF😭🤣🤣🤣 THERE IS SOMETHING STALE AND DEAD HERE.Oh it’s brown alright. Okay it’s sat for a bit I’m getting a white floral like a slightly indolic jasmine. Evil coffee grounds. Deciding if the musky earthiness I’m getting is a good thing or mimicking the feeling of being buried alive while the funeral is happening. Lord have mercy I should’ve tested this in store I only smelled the dry down inside the cap and and it smelled nice but this is a hot 1.5/5. Branding is saving them because it would’ve been a zero if I didn’t know it was S.S&Durga trying to do something artsy.

Like dirty flowers. Not in a heady, indolic way, just dirt. With flowers. Like the garden section of a Lowes or Walmart, and you’re walking by the pre grown flowers in little plastic pots, just waiting for you to take it home and transfer them to your garden. And as you transfer it, you get a whiff of that vegetal root freshly plucked from soil smell. Jasmin and orchids, sure. Do not compare this to Lush Lust. How dare you.

This perfume goes through three distinct phases on my skin: 1 Interesting, very fitting for the name, yes, I like it, very rooty (this stage lasts 10 mins max) 2 Oh wait, this is very familiar, like opuses VIII and IX, sort of bad breath + jasmine (45 mins) 3 basic aroma-chemical soup (relentless) This all happens within an hour of application, so for me this is a resounding failure.

I received a little sample of this when I purchased something else and sadly this one just isn't for me. I suspect it could be the coffee notes in it as I am not a coffee fan at all - either drink or smell - so while this scent may not be for me don't let my review deter you from trying this. I think this would also be better in cooler weather I don't think its a summery scent at all

Look, I loved my gran. She was a brilliant woman. But she lived to 94 and this smells like combination of her breath and her Yardley perfume. Flowery, but with rubber. Perhaps the rubber is burnt. And the flowers are dying.

On paper I really enjoyed this but on my skin it turned into a nauseating mess. Very heavy on the white florals, kind of reminds me of l’interdit by givenchy with the bubbly gummy note mixed with a suffocating headache.

This is just Crystal pistil with a maple syrup kick (from the “coffee). This never should have been released.

It’s not brown flowers, it’s YELLOW flowers. Immediate headache guaranteed

Where to begin with this mess. It opens up with the strong smell of an acidy chemical, the kind that you make you would run for an open window . After a few minutes , I got the smell of my old childhood potato cellar, but much worse, the one with a dirt floor, but with an added smell of chemicals and patchouli. I could not appreciate the floral notes because it was too headache producing and nauseating. I had to scrub it off!. I never got any coffee note. I cant even imagine a corpse wanting to smell like this! Save your money!

Killer patchouli (which apparently isn't there - dirty roots, maybe?), washing up liquid and ashtrays. By all means sample, scents really are different with skin chemistry, but spray light and in a well ventilated area. It is a categorical and emphatic 'No, thank you!' from me.

I bought this blind as I was intrigued by the reviews. Instant regret, literally smells like death and difficult to wash off. Not for me, it’s unusual, I’ll give it that.

preface: I’ve never seen a vote/rating spread like this on fragrantica where there’s a ton of mehs, some like/dislikes, and fewer loves/hates. For this frag in particular I’m not surprised lol On first spray, this is one of the oddest fragrances I’ve ever smelled. There’s an overwhelming note of what I can only describe as rubber cement? However, as that dies down, it emerges into a very interesting, almost boozy smell. It smells like if you made alcohol by fermenting a big handful of jasmine. It’s cozy and makes me nostalgic for a time I wasn’t alive for. Would I ever wear this? No, but I did like smelling it. Reminds me of: my great grandma who lived to 90 (despite smoking like a chimney) who was my role model as a child, digging through yellowed polaroids, a gossip session around a Formica table

Don't get me wrong- I love d.s.&durga and I understand their fragrances can be quite polarising but wow this was a lot Sickly sweet floral in the opening of jasmine but almost gave a frangipani like note too As it starts to settle, the rotting/sweet element of the fragrance lingers and is then joined by hints of fabric bandaids, soy sauce, and nit shampoo??? I think some of the aromatics in this are a little challenging for me when combined with the smell of jasmine flowers that have fallen onto the pavement and sat there in 30*C heat for 3 days straight or a bouquet of flowers you were gifted that probably should've been chucked a week ago but you're too sentimental to throw them out 😅

Pretty, cozy, a little delicate. From the jump, I get straight up jasmine tea. There is a subtle citrus that gives some lift to that jasmine, plus a mild earthiness to ground it, all wrapped with a soft musk (I think there is ISO E Super here, but it’s more restrained than, say, I Don’t Know What). More grounded in the dry down as the coffee note starts to come through. On me, it wears pretty close to the skin. Overall, quite pretty, but rather wispy and not the most complex. All that said, why did you have to name it “Brown Flowers”... literally consult a gay person

I think the name really represents this fragrance well, it reminds me of rotting flowers. The opening is VERY Lush reminiscent; it’s strong and overwhelming, a cacophony of florals and a sharp lemon peel. After a while, it settles a bit into white florals and gets more pleasant and sweet. I personally don’t detect coffee in any form. It just mellows out into something creamy and sweet. Not for me, but Incan appreciate the creativity.

I really loved the imagery in the campaign for this fragrance but the scent doesn't bring it to life for me. The "brown flowers" I get are not dried ones in a chicly eccentric cottage, but decaying white florals... it's sickly sweet and it sticks in your nose. I don't get any coffee or dried citrus. Misses the mark for me :/

starts off stunning romantic white floral. dries down into gag-inducing BR450-adjacent rancid bandaid syrup. i’ve never been more betrayed by a fragrance. frankly, it’s quite the accomplishment to create something so abominable. hats off to ds&d for making me leave work early to shower this off

When I first spray it on my skin, I get straight crusty piss cake. Then after a few minutes the florals come through. Maybe it’s the coffee with the citron that gives it such a sour opening? But then it mellows out into a nice pleasant classic white floral, old school. Not bad.

reminds me of L'Eau Papier, but it has a sharper bite. Less fuzzy--smells sexy. I'd wear it, but I wouldn't pay to wear it! There's not enough hot coffee (like if any at all)! It's studious and vintage, but in a substitute teacher who sleeps with the students way. All wrong!

Jasmine, roots and coffee describe it pretty accurately. The name is on point, it definitely smells like dead flowers but still somehow is a nice fragrance. Test it, an interesting one. Can’t decide if I like it or not.
