Freetrapper

I wear Freetrapper as a signature. It's an easy-to-wear but evocative scent, which I've interpreted as a slightly dirtier twist on a cologne-like architecture. It opens with mostly bergamot and a distant hint of flowers, but soon a shimmery oiliness comes out from under the freshness. I think this is supported by the synth castoreum (I've never smelt a castoreum note in isolation) and may be the "distilled incense" note that DS describes, but there's an accord here that I've always smelt as kerosene (lantern oil). I love that accord for how it evokes the story of the perfume, and how it evokes childhood camping trips for me. In the drydown (~7h), I end up with mostly synthetic sandalwood (which can be a tiresome note sometimes) and cedar with a bit of the leathery castoreum. The sandalwood preserves a "soapiness" throughout that prevents Freetrapper from ever feeling too pungent, sharp, or leathery. Part of why I wear Freetrapper regularly is that it is a soft and reasonably polite scent. Many of the ~2011-era DSDs (besides maybe Burning Barbershop) seem closer in their performance to French-style perfumes – where their projection settles down fast but the notes keep poking their head out throughout the day – than later, heavier releases from the house. Freetrapper is long-lived on my skin (especially if it rubs onto some textile) but for most of the day only becomes apparent when I'm moving or when someone gets close to me and comments. I appreciate this, because it makes it an easy spray, and I've very rarely felt overwhelmed or scent-fatigued by this one. Year-round (leaning toward shoulder seasons). Day or night, leaning toward morning, after which the scent will follow in gentle wisps for most of the day.

Well named, for this is truly the smell of the Great Outdoors. Sharply refreshing, sinus-clearing, brain-tingling conifers and woods - definitely the aroma of cool lakeside forest, not tropical jungle or sere desert scrub. There's plenty of moist, humid, chilly earth in there. Not aquatic, but something - I guess the bergamot - does give a flash of glinting water as well. Truly the scent equivalent of a raccoon fur hat complete with a tail - one for the mucky, rough-n-tumble tomboys (of all genders) who care more for nature than hanging out in the mall in town with the cool kids. If Tom Sawyer or Davy Crockett ever wore a scent (I know, unlikely, but bear with me...) it would be this one. Seemed true unisex to me, and thankfully free of any of the Pavlovian associations to pine-scented cleaning product or air fresheners that could have ruined this (as they did, to me, with the legendary Caron Yataghan) ... definitely a win in my view. Liked it a whole lot.

This one wears so easily—bergamot and citrus opening that’s tempered beautifully with arid woods and sappy incense. The castoreum and osmanthus give this light, almost anise, sweetness to the background. It’s airy and fresh while being dark enough to have some character. It’s very handsome in an unshaven sort of way. For those familiar with the brand’s other scents, this one is somehow between Mississippi Medicine and Coriander—lightly citrus and green but with a dark woodiness. Unfortunately, the wearing easily also means it wears lightly, and it doesn’t stick around for too long. I like that it’s vers, but am usually inclined to go for something with a bit more power.

A masculine, understated and minimalist beauty, this fragrance is designed to evoke the aura of the mountaineers of the 1800s who cut through mountain trails to trap beavers. The aura is right on as the perfume has notes of wild bergamont, pine, cedar, snakeroot and a hint of castoreum, lending it a slight animalic touch. Fresh and lightly radiant this is an energizing scent that has a quiet resilience and personality. Moderate sillage and projection. Beautifully composed and can be worn in almost any setting without having to raise any eyebrows.

Identifiable as a D.S Durga perfume. To me Freetrappers shares a similar feeling/trait to Bowmakers and Mississippi Medicine. I really love this pine-y concoction! Slightly medicinal, no-surprise! But I love that. Definitely something I would wear.

Got a mixed bag of some D&D scents. All of them are very intriguing and good at evoking moods and/or images. They’re all simple in design, yet somehow powerful in their goal. The three I tried are all very unique. Here, the wood note is very noticeable at first with pine in the background, perhaps a little bergamot but not enough to really make a huge difference. It makes me think of the woods, wearing flannel and chopping down trees for my cabin. It’s a warm scent and it lasts a pretty decent amount of time. Sillage is probably pretty good for most situations.

I have a sample of this- on the first spray I immediately put this on my list of perfumes to buy one day. It reminded me of Christmas and sitting by a campfire in the hill country all rolled into one. Sadly it faded super fast. After spraying it then sitting at a desk for 45 mn I asked my partner to smell my wrist to see if he could smell anything and he said "barely". I'm really sad about it because I love the smell!

Bought a bottle of this blind from the recent DS&D sample sale. Does a great job of emulating a nice pine forest without smelling like Pine-Sol. Not a very complicated scent, but it doesn't need to be. My only issue is that doesn't last long at all. Don't regret buying the bottle, just have to remember to reapply when necessary. A good compliment to Mississippi medicine.

I got piney woods and lime, as per the notes. *Slightly* pinesol in the opening? Could smell sexy on a man, but it was a bit out of place on me. Boyfriend's verdict: not gross, not his favorite. FYI- he also had trouble smelling it within 30 min of application, so strength/longevity is not impressive.

When I think of DS Durga , I think bold, powerful and mysterious scents. Every backstory merging seamlessly into its scent. Mississippi Medicine, Bowmakers, Burning Barbershop and the Duran Duran collaborations all pack a powerful punch. You get what it says on the tin!.....sadly not the case with Free Trapper I simply cannot relate it to the ‘Renegade Mountaineers of the Jacksonian era’. To my mind there is nothing renegade about this scent. It is pleasant. Very similar to Byredo’s ‘Sunday Cologne’. Just nothing to evoke the image of early 19th Century Wilderness Adventure. Taken into consideration some of this scents more bombastic brothers and sisters (Mississippi Med, Hungry Like The Wolf, the divine Amber Kiso and Teutonics etc) this scent almost apologises to you when you spray it. Yes, the Bergamont & Pine is there..a touch of incense maybe...but within a short period of time it fades. This isn’t a scent which is going to turn heads or be a conversation piece at a party This is neither masculine or feminine. It’s a just nice scent for whoever wears it...Is this enough for the price you are paying? Not really.

This was a disappointment, unfortunately. DS & Durga's description of Freetrapper says it's made up of "dark cedar, snake root, synthetic beaver castor, and wild bergamot." I decided to try it because the beaver castor was intriguing; cedar and bergamot are common enough. When I first put it on, I smelled a nice cedar scent that had me looking forward to the Kit Carson frontiersman concept DS&D describe. But an hour or two later, the cedar faded and it changed to a fresh aquatic scent that reminds me of Method's "Sweet Water" soap. By noon this too had faded, and there was almost nothing left of Freetrapper. Sadly, I never got that castoreum fix I'd been hoping for.

Just wanna get some housekeeping out of the way: This is certainly not just for men. The notes shown are totally off. There is no pine here. Actual notes are-- distilled incense (smells like frankincense) bergamot bitter orange dark cedar snakeroot (I'm guessing it's black cohosh; snakeroot is one of its common names) osmanthus amberwood santal castoreum I was on a winning streak with DS&Durga, being mesmerized one gorgeous fragrance after another...until Freetrapper put a (hopefully temporary) halt to it. Such a wonderful concept, but such an extremely elusive scent! Smells essentially like a lemony-frankincense similar to many other perfumes I enjoy, namely Relique d'Amour, Chembur, Plein Jeu III-V. I actually do get all of the notes listed, but it's like rapid fire. They hit for a few seconds, then they are gone. One thing I will mention is that black cohosh (if that is indeed "snakeroot") smells earthy and dirty in the way that patch can smell. It's the root of the plant that is used medicinally, and they are long and snaky, hence the nickname. Castoreum is present, but it fades almost as soon as I notice it. Would have been an amazing fragrance had it retained all these wonderful notes! After the notes all quickly dissipate one by one, the base is a simple frankincense with maybe some Iso E ("amberwood"?) and bergamot. Lasts a few hours and is a skin scent almost the entire time. I love frankincense, so it's a keeper for me, but I'd recommend sampling before buying.

Citrusy and woody, in a traditional-men’s-cologne way. Bracing! Made more interesting with a bit of smoky-dry incense. Settles into a lightweight dry woodsy zone. Are we in woody-amber-synthetic land within two hours? Nearly indistinguishable from every other masculine perfume at the department store? Yes. but frankly that’s not as bad a ripoff as some niche perfumeries will try to pull. This is a citrus-woody masculine! It even says it contains “amberwood!” (Truth in advertising!) And they’ve even thrown in some actual woods so it isn’t pure ambroxan! Good for a guy who wants a somewhat-foresty spin on traditional masculine fragrance; not compelling enough that I’d want to wear it again myself.

This smells like piney, limey, citrus-based soap made with tree sap and animal pee and.......the dreaded synthetic cedar pickle juice smell. I’m not getting incense. The concept seems to be a settler’s home-made lye soap, or at least that’s what I’m envisioning. But the trapper imagery is a fail, since the projection is weak.

Such a disappointment after testing few others from this house. Didn't expect much looking at the notes breakdown. Amazing storytelling for this perfume but, oh boy, the scent itself does not live up to it. Skin scent after 30 minutes.

Beaver trappers were the cowboys of early America. Renegade mountaineers and lumberjacks of the Jacksonian era from 1828 on, who roamed the wilderness in search of beaver skins, which were prized by hatmakers, doctors and perfumers. The German author Karl May dedicated an entire novel to the "Trapper Vulture‘s Beak": This trapper received his name from the Native Americans because of his unusually large nose, whereby his unusual physiognomy had something about it that immediately inspired confidence, you could trust him. He chewed tobacco passionately and spat at opponents, uncomfortable questioners and arrogant officials (or spat right next to them). This is exactly how it felt to me after first spraying of "Freetrapper". It opens with cedar, bitter orange, a little smoke with a tobacco like note right in the background - very aromatic and invigorating. In the colder months this was warm and comforting for me. Now that the weather has heated up, it is wonderfully refreshing. It looks very masculine to me, but only because I associate this kind of cedar with lumberjacks. The incense is quite bright and makes the scent seem even more mysterious. After about ten minutes "Freetrapper" becomes softer and turns into a light soapiness together with a swampy medicinal herb. The whole fragrance seems to be wrapped in a mist, the kind that leaves a slight wetness on the floor when mist is over it. After some time, the woods take center stage, so earthy that they seem to be connected to the forest floor. A warm, swampy, great cedar scent remains in the drydown. Durga has amazing scents - I love this scent for the summer! A perfume for urban Lumberjacks...if I ever feel like spitting on unteachable officials, I will wear this fragrance. Fragrance 8/10, Longevity 7/10, Sillage 7/10, Flacon 7/10

This is an interesting mix of incense, citrus, and woods. Certainly still leans toward the fall/winter but the combination gives it some versatility and uniqueness. One might reach for a heavier incense option in the winter or something lighter in the summer, but it's possible. It has a strong opening, as far as projection, but dries down relatively quickly to a skin scent, perhaps within a couple hours or so, so that in that respect, it's not as worthwhile as a couple of the other heavier D.S. & Durga fragrances. Not one I'd buy, as it's interesting but not my cup of tea, but worth trying. 6 out of 10

I don't see why this can be worn by a women. I like it best out off all the Ds&Durgas I have tried so far and I'm a women. My second favourite is Sir though so maybe I have androgynous tastes in perfume. This one is fresh and citrusy with warm undertones and dry down from the woods. Very simple but that's why I like it, I think. Not sure about putting it on my Christmas list though not sure if it's worth a bull bottle. I'll retry soon and report back if I have a change of heart. I have to say I love the ideas behind this brand regardless.

DS & D seems to be comitted to a minimalist approach to perfume - a few carefully chosen ingredients, well blended. I love minimalist design, but detest minimalist art. Which is this? Exactly. It's lime and christmass trees! It's a tequila shot in a pine forest! I imagine this was intended for flannel shirted, bearded Williamsburg hipster vegitarian manly men. They should enjoy the trees, and leave the Axe at home.

-Freetrapper opens smelling like culinary pepper. -Evolves to a gorgeous photorealistic pine scent, with a watery quality to it. (This is not at all like the cheap cans of air freshener or toilet detergent that claim to be "Pine-scented", but the actual pine tree you'd find in a forest.) -Definitely one worth checking out. (+)

An elegant, subtle citrus-cedar scent; I agree with other reviewers that this doesn't really match the "rough and tumble" brand story, but it's gorgeous and absolutely an elevated daily "dumb reach" for me. Also, it lingers pleasantly for hours and hours, even on my dry, perfume-devouring skin.

I love incense I love forests I love amber and i MISS having this 😭 would really have to convince myself to swing for a full size, but i would definitely seek out more samples since this lasts forever and is just the perfect balance of attractive and weird (just like me :) )

Another difficult DS Durga scent to review. I don't detect any Axe. A little aromatic ozone to start on to some lemon/lime. Mellows but no other notes arise. Medium lasting with little projection. You won't smell like any one else at the party to be sure

I'm sucked in to the snake root. Hiccup. Slightly soapy but very appealing lime bubbly. Deft mixology but it needs to at least stay up with me for more than half hour. Instead of this spray and dash wham bam. No I won't bank roll a cabana boy stripper.
