Grapefruit Generation

Heaven help me, I've fallen in love with an expensive perfume. On paper this scent is green and woody without much trace of citrus to my nose, so I wasnt expecting much out of it, but boy has it surprised me. As a certified citrus slut, this is wonderfully a scent that fulfills my dream of a citrus scent that actually lasts on me. It opens with a bright spritz of pomelo and a lot of greenery, spicy, woodsy, and herbaceous. As it warms and develops on my skin the grapefruit comes out, never overwhelming, but also never overwhelmed by the other notes. The elm, hawthorne, and cork add a woodsiness and spice, while the musk and floral ground and round out the brightness of the citrus. It smells like a spring day, a walk in the freshly blooming woods after a citrus snack, or, like I've been craving, the inside of a citrus tree filled greenhouse. Really wonderful in its simplicity, I'd be fascinated to layer it with a more watery or earthy scent to see if the greenhouse smell could be perfected. My only worry is that the extremely invasive and aggravating elm seed bugs will like this scent as much as I do. I'll be waiting till spring actually hits to make sure they're not drawn to it before I order a full bottle. If they are, I'll cry, but this will become a pass. If not, I'll certainly be buying this full sized.

I like this one a lot, but it's not a traditional citrus fragrance. The opening is realistic grapefruit, not super sweet which I appreciate, very well done.The drydown is super unique and amazing. I get musk which I love, and that cork accord. I've smelled cork in the past and I don't remember it having a smell when it's not soaked in wine, but I assume the tree has some sort of aroma. I feel like they built the cork accord with sandalwood and something slightly sweet, almost like honey but not quite. Perhaps beeswax. However,I have two minor gripes. Performance on my skin is isn't very good from a sillage or a longevity standpoint, so I can tell I'm going to have to spray heavy. No problem, that goes with the territory of citrus and moreso with citruses utilizing natural ingredients. My other issue is the grapefruit doesn't stick around. It literally disappears, without a trace. So when you hit the drydown it feels like you're wearing a second fragrance. That's fine, but if you're looking for a citrus experience through and through, this isn't it. All that said, I still love this fragrance and the creative perfumer behind it. Never a dull moment with DS Durga. Scent 8.6/10 Performance 2/10 P. S. This smells very different from Bergamote 22 imo. Sample first

Really love that one! Agreeing with neonlegs - I wish it was a bit weird and project a bit more but ultimately the tubereuse is very prominent on me so I guess this is the weird piece? I also have a feeling this one will age well. Anyway, it's very good, fun not too generic and def niche and overall a good piece to own for Spring, Summer and/or Fall. With current projection, I'd say buy it for a season, kill it and move on - but in a good way! I only got the 50ml because of that reason. If projection/longevity increase with oxidation, I'll def get a 100ml next year (and will also revisit my post). UPDATE: Layered with IDKW or CP...........WOW WOW WOW UPDATE 2: It does remind me A LITTLE BIT of GAIAC 10 after 30 min.. I'm not going to suggest it above because these have nothing in common but just wanted to throw it out there. Maybe they use the same musk(s) for the base?

I got given this as a gift and didn't expect to like it, as grapefruit just isn't my first choice, citrus-wise. But - this stuff is really good! I like how dense and dimensional this perfume is, and because the grapefruit is in the base and not just in the opening, I get to smell a wonderful, citrus-musk blend on my hair and skin many hours after the initial burst. The tuberose is very respectable and grounds the whole thing, making the whole fragrance lean seductive/sultry rather than clean/fruity. Sometimes the problem with citrus scents is that they just don't smell grown-up enough, but this one is very grown-up indeed. Like another reviewer here, I actually prefer this in winter because it reminds me of hot summer evenings.

Love this one, enough to own a full bottle and use almost daily. I tend to like it as a bright wake-up spritz on top of other scents, and it pairs well with Molecule 01 and I Don’t Know What. While this is a summery scent, I actually like it best in the winter (grapefruit season) as an antidote to the cold/gray. Depression buster. Starts with a very zingy grapefruit (almost grapefruit soda), then some white florals appear (which I don’t normally like, but it works here for me), and then a cork wood musk (very clean/white musk, I’m not getting animalic) with a hint of grapefruit til it disappears. Doesn’t last long, but works for me as a wake up/morning scent.

I liked this scent so much when I tried it I may have impulsively bought a full bottle that found on sale at Joomashop. I surprisingly don't get grapefruit from this... Citrus? Yes. It's probably the pomelo? It's very warm and creamy... To me it feels more like a cozy, cool girl scent than the energetic, bright scent I imagined it to be. It is one of those scents that are fun to layer with. Recently I've layered it with Cheap & Chic Moschino "I Love Love" and it's the perfect addition. That particular scent is very bright, citrusy and sharp - almost too much on its own - so paired with THIS? *chef's kiss*

Ohhh my ... Grapefruit Generation is my new love!!! Absolutely beautifully done. Very citrusy and fresh in the start , refreshening! You can def smell a juicy pomelo. As it dries becoming warmer , sweeter but still very citrusy. Once its settle on my skin stays a beautiful mixture of fresh citrus and white flower combo with a powdery touch . To me it is the perfect citrus , powder perfume 10/10 for sure!!! Must try , you not gonna regret it !!!

I’m really interested in thinking about the shapes of smells lately. This is the only musky scent i’ve ever liked, and i think it’s because with every sniff there’s a seamless arc blending the white floral into the musk. The citrus is like tiny sparkling stars perforating the powdery floral/musk notes so it never gets too heavy and cloying. I think this has the soul of a granny perfume but with a youthful twist.

Grapefruit comes first then comes pomelo then grapefruit again all acompanied with flowers. On the drydown grapefruit fades off and musk comes into play. I smell cork on my skin rather than on fabric. The fragrance to me is sweet and definitely feminine. I'd like to smell it on a woman!

Waking up on a beautiful summers Sunday and heading to the porch or patio with a cup of ice water with freshly squeezed grapefruit and pomelo slices inside to take in the fresh air and refresh after a long weekend. The fresh linen pajamas you wear comfortingly warm yet loose. Life is good. As soon as you spray this on you are smacked in the face with a healthy dose of tart and juicy grapefruit and pithy pomelo supported by some lovely green notes. After this initial punch of citrus the focus becomes this wonderful mixture of grapefruit, clean white florals, and the classic DS & Durga clean musk. The scent is very linear from this point on, mostly just the focus becoming the clean musk instead of the citrus/floral combo. This scent is entirely enjoyable as it is kind of forgettable. Don't get me wrong, this is a wonderful interpretation of a grapefruit focused fragrance, but it lacks that characteristic wow factor that makes me love DS & Durga so much. If you are new to the niche world, this will be a great starting fragrance as it's super mass appealing and a real easy reach. This would make a very easy dumb reach for situations where I don't need a fragrance that screams, like running an errand right before you shower or the gym. That being said, I really don't think this is worth the full retail price of $210 for a 50 mL, buy it from discounters. There are better DS & Durga freshies. Completely unisex. 5-6 hours performance with 1-3 hours of moderate projection before becoming a skin scent. 7.4/10

After going through several more niche houses at a small retailer, some of which I was familiar I felt compelled to purchase something. If not for the retailer who will do fine without my purchase, at least for the sales commission for the gentleman who let me waste more than a good hour going through so many, some several times. In part I was in decision paralysis, and wanted to leave with something more fresh for the summer. While I wasn't in love with Grapefruit Generation, it was a safe bet compared to several others lingering on my arms for 15 or more minutes. What I like about this fragrance is that the grapefruit is friendly, summery and with it's paired notes settles down to a more musky green and fresh vibe. It almost lands in room scent category but remains a hint more personal fragrance. While I tested it in store several times, I didn't really pay attention to the notes (till now) and feel it is more pomelo than grapefruit per say, and this is what keeps it so approachable, and easy to wear. While at first whiff it may lean more feminine, I found it stays very unisex within 10 minutes of dry down. Wish longevity was a bit longer, topping out at around 8 hrs, and agree it remains mostly an intimate skin scent. Like it. Not in love with it, and like any short term relationship (until the bottle runs out) there's a bit of buyer's remorse.

Somehow manages to smell both fresh and mature, both fresh-squeezed and faux. The pomelo oil is nearly photorealistic on first spritz, just on the cusp of ripeness, but soon eclipsed by the white noise of manufactured musk and pale florals. However it’s not unpleasant or saccharine, and remains crisp throughout its lifespan. I’m imagining the mist percolating from a Muji oil diffuser through a beauty parlour – one that is surgically clean and untouched since the eighties. It’s a vapourwave scent to me; a liminal citrus. Longevity: I was getting four hours tops, and a faint four hours at that. It’s a gentle hum that you sometimes have to search for, like pressing your ear to a conch shell. Mental Snapshot: You’re getting a trim at a nameless salon along the Riviera. The Floridian Riviera. Tufted vinyl recliners, white wicker shelves of sea glass, sun-bleached posters of phantom pageant winners. The nameless coiffeuse is dressed in head-to-toe white linen and gives you exactly what you need, but not what you asked for. tl;dr: eau de San Junipero 🐬💿

A nice grapefruit transfiguration: you really get that chewy/sweet look of the white part of a large, just-cut pomelo. Far from being unpleasant, then, and to be included in this series of perfumes that could fill a fruit basket. On the other hand, the balance of notes could have given much better. The three flowers in the middle really take a few minutes to appear to my nose, and remain really very (too) discreet. Ditto for the cork (or really a hint of something woody/moist). And elm, it's a big mystery. It's a nice scent, but while we're at it, they could have gone for something really original. Well, it's done, it's done.

While many complain this is a less interesting scent from DS & Durga, I'm really excited because this is the first time I've been able to track the progression of a scent, instead of noting that the smell seems to be growing fainter. Idk guys, I feel like the perfumer is really good at making perfume. Here's my sense of the stages: 1. Blast of very realistic pomelo citrus. 2. Grandma style white florals but they feel young and fun and not too heavy. 3. Still white florals, but now white fleshy grapefruit skin creeps in. 4. Florals start to fade, weird wood. Cork I guess. Kind of smells like butter.

Cyprès14 mentioned layering this with IDKW; I also tried layering it with Crystal Pistil and that was my personal favorite. Alone, it’s still great imo; it’s like bathing in a wooden tub full of sparkling grapefruit juice, and that tub is in a room filled with tuberose and hawthorne. Layered with Crystal Pistil, and it’s like you’re walking through some kind of magical fairy citrus grove in bloom. It also seems to extend the longevity a bit, which is (for me) what Grapefruit Generation is really lacking.

So, Grapefruit Generation is like the slightly soapy sibling to D.S. & Durga's other fragrance - Italian Citrus. This has a more prominent pulpiness to it, which gives it a bit more substance. It's sweet and soapy while also earthy and dry. Nothing terribly unique or memorable with this one. Just very clean and simple. Longevity is about an hour or so on my skin. Projection is...not too impressive. Mostly a skin scent, I'd say. I'm afraid this one is far from being worth the price tag.

Opening is a really nice, realistic grapefruit. It’s fleeting however. After that to my nose it just becomes a less interesting version on Artsian Pure by John Varvatos. Similar citrus/floral/herbal/aromatic combo, and both have a dryness to them, but Artisan Pure has a little more depth and nuance and is far more evocative to me. I do like this, but considering the alternatives I think it overpriced for what it is.

It’s more pomelo than grapefruit, but I’m not complaining. Fresh and exciting, and very realistic. Fun!

I don’t really get the hype around this one. I expected something more inventive from DS & Durga; Grapefruit Generic would be a better name for this. It’s very wood forward, from start to finish. The strong wood note at the opening smells like cork to me, but apparently it’s elm? I don’t actually know what elm smells like, but it’s not the sort of distinct woodiness you get from cedar or sandalwood. The citrus notes are fine. That’s it. Just fine. I definitely wouldn’t say it’s pomelo in the opening (we have two pomelo trees on our property that are currently in bloom. The citrus note does not smell anything like the fruit, nor the blossoms), and I can’t help but compare every grapefruit note I come across to the photorealistic beauty that is Pera Granita. Is this a bad fragrance? No. But I’m having a hard time reconciling how redundant this is with the fact that it’s a 2021 DS & Durga fragrance.

At first, Grapefruit Generation is a woody and almost incensy grapefruit that is not unpleasant. Then, it settles into something that to me evokes a cheap citrus air refresher sprayed in a restaurant bathroom, but thankfully that passes quickly and settles into a nice and uplifting, if somewhat generic and simple grapefruit. The lasting power on this fragrance is also nonexistent--I think it lasted 1.5 hours on my wrist.

I’m a fan of grapefruit for sure and have a few favorites that feature the note. This seemed an obvious one to try. It didn’t do much for me I’m afraid. It is not very special but the bigger problem was how quickly it turned to a faint whisper of a fragrance. I’ll stick with Azzaro chrome sport or costume National homme for grapefruit and several rhubarb scents when I want that zingy exhilaration.

the opening is sooo black currant-coded... it’s like if you used fruit peels for deodorant. stinky! granted it gets cleaner over time. but i am getting the image of someone who took a shower but forgot to wash their armpits.

At first, I was pleasantly surprised. I wasn't expecting a musky citrus. But in no time, it dried down into a pretty standard white floral. Not super interesting on me ultimately!

I like this one but it doesn't last on me. PM me if you want a great price on an almost-full bottle!

I liked this when I smelt it on card in-store, so I went back to try some on my skin after work. It’s quite green and woody (perhaps the cork but I’m not familiar with it as a note). There’s not really any fruitiness from the grapefruit but there is some of the bitterness. Even just one spray is quite strong. I didn’t pick up on the florals or musk but it makes sense that they’re there. Overall, I just didn’t end up enjoying this on me.

If you're a grapefruit lover, hoping this will be a grapefruit scent... this is not the droid you're looking for. The grapefruit is fleeting, and you're very quickly left with a straightforward tuberose. As with most tuberose fragrances, the sillage is great, and this lasts about 3-4 hours. This scent just wasn't for me. If I wanted a tuberose scent, there are a million others with better longevity and a bit more interest.

At first, it’s a bright, realistic pomelo that’s refreshing, but it fades quickly into a clean, slightly synthetic citrus floral haze. The hawthorn and paradisone add an airy white‐noise floral layer, and the base becomes musky and a little sterile.

Really did nog enjoy the opening, although the dry-down is okay. Was hoping for more grapefruit and citrus somehow.

I’m generally not into fragrances of or with grapefruit because to me they smell or can be mistaken for that sour tart armpit scent. I never stink of body odor and I would hate to be mistaken for that. I love lemon scents however. It’s more classy, fresh and clean and recalls that gentleman scent from yesteryears. It’s so summer, happy and always a crowd pleaser. Thought I would love grapefruit as well since it’s citrus and I love the freshly made juice. However, I tried this since I love Durga scents and THIS is one grapefruit fragrance I would wear. Doest have that acidic body sweat scent. Maybe it’s the pomelo and white florals that give it its uniqueness. It gets a bit Woody too which I also love.

On my skin, this has the most awful note that dominates the whole thing. My first thought was that it reminded me of how real honey, straight from the comb, can taste different depending on what the bees are eating. Sometimes it has this awful bitter, animalic quality that ruins the honey. I’ve learned not everyone perceives this the same way; I’ve eaten honey comb with people that got the same taste I did, and others that found the very same honey comb delicious. I couldn’t figure out what this was, until I looked up what hawthorne is supposed to smell like. THIS is the offending note! For whatever reason it’s a bully on my skin and I can’t smell much of anything else. So strange!

I loved the citrus pop at the top..in my brain I thought...this isn't going to last, citrus seldom does. And I was not wrong. It's been 2 hours and I can only sniff the faintest of florals laced with a tinge of grapefruit. I remember reading or hearing DSM saying that his fragrances are meant to be layered and I believe this is one that is worthy...perhaps with something a bit deeper like leatherize...or call me crazy - Cowboy Grass? IDK. worth a shot. I will keep you posted. A sunny day prance around an open air farmers market filling a basket with a variety of citruses and flowers. FUN!

Oh Mannn, this one opens with a vibrant, juicy citrus burst that's refreshing and full of energy. Initially, it feels like the perfect summer scent bright, tangy, and uplifting. And i want that scent only!!!! However, as it dries down, something about the composition changes in an odd way. The fresh grapefruit note fades into a strange, almost sour or sweaty undertone that can be quite unpleasant on my skin. It’s a bit disappointing, as the opening was so promising, but the dry down sometimes ends up smelling more off-putting than enjoyable. Do you have any suggestions??

Okay. In my opinion it opens with a nice Citrus Accord but heavy grapefruit,? No. But it is nice nonetheless. It does have a slight Fly Away - Mugler feel that dries down to Mugler Cologne. Can a man pull off the tuberose in this? Yes. It is not that heady and is actually quite watered down. Overall this is fresh green clean slightly Floral summer banger. Is it out of its price range? Hell yeah just get Fly Away which performs better anyways.

This house can do no wrong for me everything I've tried has been a hit.!! Le Labo is everyone's go to in nyc But this house is my personal favorite and my little secret. Love love love this one. definitely worth adding to my collection which makes it 12 atm 😉 😜

i get more white floral than anything!! the grapefruit is definitely present, but it's nowhere near as prominent as the tuberose. i usually find DS&Durga scents to be really interesting, but this one is an exception...

The grapefruit is so realistic through the grapefruit basenotes and pomelo skin. Really lovely. With the cork and powderiness, it's registering as the 'band-aid' accord on me - but I'm enjoying that nonetheless!

Really aromatic, realistic grapefruit opening. Not super sour, quite a bit of spice and warmth. I liked it until it dried down to what smells like wet cardboard on my skin.
