Wild Coyote

I wholeheartedly second everything in the review of Jitterbug Perfume Lover (one of my Fragrantica scent twins). I purchased this over the weekend, when I visited Dawn's studio, which isn't too far from my house (a fabulous bonus for a perfume lover, not so fabulous for the wallet!). I was curious about the name, as I mentioned to Dawn that 'Wild Coyote' had left me thinking that this was another in her series of gorgeous animalic scents, a la Chinchilla, Foxy, and L'etole de Vison. The 'wild coyote' is instead her reference to taming the wild nature of the ylang-ylang note, which is apparently a trickster that can come across as overly sweet, or indolic, or even meaty, unless it's artfully combined. This resonated with me, as most of the ylang-ylang fragrances I own or have tried tend to feature ylang-ylang married with vanilla, or with heady white florals, to play the notes off one another. Wild Coyote gives me the burnished warmth of rich, heady ylang-ylang that isn't overly sweetened by vanilla, and which shines on its own, without its frequent partners tuberose, jasmine, or gardenia. The magnolia note lends a supporting hint of waxy lemon; the champaca gives the faintest impression of tea; and the sandalwood and frankincense ground the ylang-ylang, without changing it into a heavier fragrance. Ylang-ylang is the star of Wild Coyote, from start to finish. On my skin, the extrait version is gorgeous and lasts all day, and is rich and deep, while the EDP lasts a good 6-8 hours, and ends on an airier note that highlights the ylang-ylang, magnolia, and vanilla. Both formulations are glorious. If you are a ylang-ylang lover, you need this in your collection, as it's nothing like any other ylang-ylang focused fragrance I've tried. I don't know where to begin. I absolutely love ylang-ylang, and this perfume manages to make a favorite note even more gorgeous. The other fragrances I have that feature ylang-ylang, are very tropical and sweet. This one purrs. It has a warmth and depth, with the most intriguing animalic edge to it, and it's sooooooo pretty. I feel a little bit like the iconic photo of Raquel Welch in the fur bikini.

DSH Perfumes Wild Coyote is the sixth creation in her Heirloom collection of limited edition fragrances, available only in June of this year, so it’s already gone, but I’m delighted to have been gifted a sample by a generous member of the fragcomm. As the artwork suggests, Wild Coyote is a mélange of yellow florals, an ode, of sorts, to their creamy, bright qualities that make them so lovable. This particular blend consists of generous helping of ylang-ylang but also champaca, orchid, vanilla, amber, and sandalwood. It’s not at all a screechy floral but rather a smooth, creamy creation that’s sweet enough to be the point of actually being a bit tasty in its appeal, while still primarily a floral experience. It’s a refined, elegant composition that works oddly well for me, given that I’m not usually a big fan of florals, though I still concede that I’d probably enjoy smelling it others more than on myself.
