Fragrance Review For Ungaro Emanuel Ungaro Top Notes Aldehydes Rose Coriander Orange Blossom Jasmine Neroli Bergamot Lemon Middle Notes Iris Turkish Rose Lily of the Valley Base Notes Sandalwood Tonka Amber Patchouli Musk Vanilla Cedar Cardamom Launched in 1977 by the Italian-French fashion house of Emanuel Ungaro, and formulated by an uncredited nose, this is an exquisite floral Oriental. It has been compared to Joop! for women, and Dior's Poison. It was ahead of it's time and looking forward to the 80's with their super charged scents. In today's world, this is an antiquated piece of perfumery but like a beautiful vintage Emanuel Ungaro fashion show evening gown it deserves to be studied, admired and even put behind glass in a museum. I have had the pleasure and honor of wearing it yesterday on my first day of Milan Fashion Week and will wear it today for Day 2. It exudes an Italian haute couture vibe. It's a violet or pink evening gown, boa, long full floor length gown, diamonds and tiaras. A womanly fragrance. It has a little bit of what would later turn out to be Emanuel Ungaro's Diva. So if you like those glamorous retro fashion fragrances, this will be an experience and an education as it was for me. Thank you to my girlfriend Claudia in Milan! The opening is fabulously aldehydic and wondrously old fashioned. If you're familiar with aldehyde notes in perfume, you know what delirious zest and freshness it has. This freshness is also coming from the citrus notes: a sharp lemon, a delectable juicy bergamot and orange grove neroli and orange blossom. The citrus is just right, not too much not to faint. And never once does it come off as the unisex orange or citrus cologne for men type of smell. It's a sweet orange blossom as it begins. Then it plunges into the heart of sweet flowers. A rose is most assuredly in the heart. This is a powdery rose, similar to the powdery rose in Diva and with the additional 2nd note of Turkish and iris, you get a very lovely talc powder type of scent. Very powdery. A sweet jasmine is the only white floral note in the mix, but it's noticeable. There's a green lily of the valley as it begins to dissipate. The powder notes fade and the green floral scent of lily with leaves emerges. This smells like a warm sunny summer afternoon walking in an Italian villa's garden. The garden is a rose and jasmine garden. The femininity is never cloying. It's a mature scent for the confident and consciously feminine woman. Hats, dresses, gowns, make up, diamond jewelry. She is never seen in a pair of pants. She is the Italian President's wife, or perhaps in an older era, the 19th century, the Queen of Italy, the wife of Vittorio Emmanuel in a glittering tiara, fur stole or ermine, and a velvet gown. This is as sophisticated and as elegant as a grand dame of Italy can be. Ultimately, the way the fragrance wears in the first hour or so, is citrus-floral with green notes. Very traditional and classy, and very Italian. It has a sweet soapy powder boudoir fragrance air as well. It can be worn both in the day time and the evening but it's formal wear only. Smells like a million bucks. As the fragrance begins to dry, the amber note which is the dominant base note, develops quickly. It's a soapy kind of amber, clean and glossy, like a gold bar of soap. Luxurious. Then I detected further green notes of herbal patchouli leaf, and woodsy notes of sandalwood. This sandal is absolutely gorgeous and provides the fragrance with an Oriental character but it never does transport you to the Far East. She is still a dignified European lady. A cedar wood provides a pleasant woodsy smell and it later turns into a sweet vanilla. The scent is a little less complex than most 70's or 80's fragrances. There are not that many notes. Even Opium by Yves Saint Laurent has more notes. This is between being too boring and linear and excessive. It's a well balanced almost perfect classical fragrance. It's not a chypre as it lacks further woods and greens, but it's a beautiful floral Oriental with roses jasmines and patchouli-sandalwood. In the very final stage of it's performance, there is a warm musk. The musk is like pure skin on skin, or the scent of your own natural skin made warm by the sun. Smells like an amber sun tan lotion. I can't tell you how much I am loving this fragrance. Ungaro lasts forever, all day and into the night. The aroma is absolutely beautiful and dreamy. I have received compliments on it and will enjoy wearing it all week. Fabulous.

My oh my. This is mad perfume. MAD. Violent. Perpetrator. Controler. Unique. Wonderful. Underrated legend. I am devoted to this cocktail of madness around 25 years. It was love at forst smell. Since then I never separated from this violator. Ohh yes. It is very very female scent but the spirit talking from that beautiful bottle is male. Experience gentleman leading you trough new eroticism. This is the smell of building up feminine eroticism. Everyone around me could recognize me by this scent. Trough my high school days. This scent made me embrace my body (that transformed into woman) and though me how to use it. Without skipping my spirit. Ungaro is ear whisperer, leads you to lingerie store. To lipstick wearing (regularly). Teaching you to buy stockings. It leads you to grow into eccentric agent provocateur. It leads you to eroticism inteligence... It's a perfume that teaches you to risk. Jacques Polge did master work for Ungaro. Also with some other Ungaro fragnances, like Diva for example ("the TUBEROSE is rarely found in the top note alone!!!"). Bottle is very suitable to the fragrance. Eccentric. Mad. But wonderful. That indigo blue, that glass twist... That wild, mad pink ribbon. That's it. Fits. Let's look a bit into this composition. 19!!! Top notes: Orange Blossom, Rose, Neroli, Jasmine, Coriander, Aldehydes, Bergamot and Lemon. This top notes could be in these modern fraudulent times a perfume its own. Slap of aldehydes! Freshness of citrus with coriander, orange blossoms, adding silent jealousy Jasmin trying to be friends with rose. There you go. But because Polge is much of a master he didn't stop there (well at least not in this composition). What is for some fraudsters a "symphony" for money making, for Polge that's Top notes (in Ungaro). A mastery one. An intro of sensuality. (I believe, if I dare to add, Polge did much worse intro as perfume. For Chanel. In my opinion mistakes. Jaques you polluted your name! ). The opening after aldehydes is long! Loooonnnggg! Long. Yes. Μiddle notes: ancient Greek religion and mythology, the Moirai (/ˈmɔɪraɪ, -riː/) often known in English as the Fates—were the personifications of destiny. They were three sisters: Clotho (the spinner), Lachesis (the allotter), and Atropos (the inevitable, a metaphor for death). Rose (Clotho), iris (Lachesis) and Lily-of-the-Valley (Atropos). Do you understand that? Is it coincidence? I don't believe in coincidence. Yes or no. Polge can answer. I can only talk what I see! That's how they behave. That's their botanical specification. Iris. According to romantic legend, the name ‘Iris’ comes from the Greek ‘rainbow goddess’ Irida, who used a rainbow to slide from sky to earth, bringing the will of the Olympic Gods to share with mere mortals. Understanding better? Last one is Lilly of the valley. Death. Poisonous miracle. 3 leading you to growing into femininity. Erotic, sexy scent. Animalic. Do you understand now? Base notes: Tonka Bean, Vanilla, Amber, Sandalwood, Cardamom, Patchouli, Musk and Cedar. So beautiful. Powerful. Long lasting! Have in mind! ALL will stay till the end! Carrying powdery violator Lilly till they end. It is very very good quality perfume. The quality is not just technical. This scent teaches you a quality of being a woman. MAD, mad perfume.

People who know very well the history of French brands, attention please, a humble European asks you to make the difference between the former mansion Ungaro and the actual Emanuel Ungaro. Ungaro was the first company of the designer that still exists as a department and produce the flanking perfumes of Ungaro like Ungaro Party, Ungaro Blue, Ungaro Love, U. Femme etc. And yes the perfume was released in 77, Diva is the first perfume of the mansion Emanuel Ungaro, understood? Now, Ungaro is still produced but in small quantities, the formula was changed in 1991, 2006, 2012. The 2006 formula was really weirder, but it seems to me now that it is very close to the original. It is a feminist fragrance, a spicy floral, slightly masculine, probably the aldehyde from my point of view is one with a lavender scent, and of course the iris is made like in the old formula, because this note is always chemical, the iris is a flower far too limp to be extracted and by insertion into the fat it leaves no odor, so it is produced by synthesis, the new type of iris is sweeter, the classic one is a little harsh. Anyway the perfume is beautiful. It goes very well for a strong woman in a suit. It was and is a perfume that I appreciated, it's the perfume I wear every time I get stuck and I don't know with what to associate an outfit. I recommend to career ladies to try it at least ones, because it is one of the most worn perfumes of European feminists, it is the perfume you feel even now in the whole European feminist lodge.

I must say that after trying Diva, Senso, and now Ungaro. I think Ungaro suites me the most compared to the other two. This smells of sweet powdery ambery resins with citrus mixed in. This perfume gives me the same dark sexy feeling that Poison, and Addict gives me. I've also received many compliments on it which has suprised me considering how old it is. But that means this one is timeless and fits into any era. This perfume also reminds me of the vintage version of avon's Mesmerize in the cobalt blue bottle. I've been wearing this as my "night out" perfume and so far it's been a success. Although someone did say it was really strong but that was my fault, I might have oversprayed. The iris must be contributing to the powderyness, right? Edit- Yes this perfume is the queen of the night it's Saturday night as I write this drunk listening to Madonnas "bad girl" song doused in none other than Ungaro

I cannot believe this isn't still in production or at least re-created/imitated I dont know if this is a niche type of smell but is so timeless and appealing. It transcends time altogether. I love it so much💙🩵💙 if youre lucky enough to get a bottle that is preserved enough you will find that the top notes are filled with neroli, lemon, and bergamont. Its this lemon/lime vanilla amber resiny masterpiece. It smells "somewhat" along the lines of "mesmerize" by avon. I just cant get enough of this perfume, its perfect for fall and cold spring days. I love re applying this throughout the day. Its a refreshingly sexy deep vanilla. The iris does add a powdery aspect but it blends very well with the vanilla. Its kind of like shalimar in the way that its jam packed with all kinds of citrus's at the beginning and its slowly evolves in a comforting vanilla resiny dream

Ooh, I was very, very lucky to get a sample of this from Turquise, who was way to generous. I"m dumbfounded why this was continued. I had no idea what the notes were when i put it on, but instantly thought "WOW!" This is warm, slightly spicy, heavier scent that you just want to wrap yourself up in. I like it because it is smooth and not harsh (often aldehydes push things over the top). the citrus opening is well-behaved, and hte florals make a respectful entrance. Nothing is guache or offensive here, it is just heavenly. Bring it back!

Now I wonder if Ungaro de Ungaro is better suited to the cold as I was shocked to find that I didn't like it so much when I used it last week (the end of Spring in the Southern Hemisphere). The votes above are all for winter so I guess that's my answer to the problem. Thought I was being fickle again! At least I don't feel desperate for a full bottle now. My new full miniature will be fine for some time as perfume is sending me broke.

I sooo want this perfume back again. Afraid to buy on E-bay to only find out is a knock off at more than double of the price of its original. This scent is just fabulous, so much so that even men would stop me to ask me what perfume I was wearing. I have yet to find one that compares to it, sigh.... and I have many. This was my signature scent, the little left is reserved to very special occassions.

Lovely fragrance which I am wearing nearly everyday since I was lucky to buy it. Discontinued long time ago and it is really hard to find. My interest started with small miniature which I loved. Very fresh impression with the first sniff, slowly changing into lovely warmth. It's not very 'spicy' and not too sweet, perfect for everyday use.

it's a fabulous ,strong as a red wine perfume! red rose,juicy lemon,hot spices,a lot of wood,it's a pity that now it's so rare perfume! 1 spplash is so potente and longlasting ,with a huge scent. i'w like to recommend it to all.

What a beautiful perfume. I purchased a mini for mum but as it wasn't quite empty I tried it on. Fantastique oriental! Worth searching for. Lasts for hours and may I add that the base is warm and enticing. A pleasure to wear.

I used to want this in a large bottle so badly, until I got a mini and it reminded me VERY much of Joop! the original. Since I think Joop! is already a masterpiece, I decided to give up on the dream and enjoy my Joop! :-)

Try the German Amazon page (ending with .de instead of .com). Sometimes they still sell the original (to be seen by the picture of the original bottle). I did the same thing and I got the vintage one! Not cheap, though...

Great vintage perfume I am glad to have now in my wardrobe. Similar to JOOP! for women (1987)? Yes, slightly but JOOP! for women screams "Power Woman" while Ungaro is far more rounded and seductive. I am addicted...

This smells like dark amber and neroli with a smokey wood background. It's warm, animalic and flowery. And the floral part of this fragrance smells like Senso. Overall it is magnificent! Love it!

Oops, this one was launched in 1991, not 1977. Diva was Ungaro's first fragrance launch, a huge success, and is still in production today.

One of the very few oriental fragrances I actually love. It smells rich and expensive.

One might anticipate a tsunami of aldehydes with Ungaro but they surprise you with a light breeze, freshening and marrying notes together into beautiful accords. This scent is so beautiful, my scent consuming skin likes to hide it from me, but it delights me nonetheless. Layering with some moisturizer gives it a boost for me. The biggest surprise by far for me with this blind buy was the scent of the pineapple guava tree we had in our backyard as I grew up. She is still growing, blossoming and dropping her heavy load of fruit, which smells lightly sweet and aromatic, a tang of bergamot like citrus and pungent skins mixing with the juicy floral. There is something unique in this fragrance which sets it apart, if not my perfect and ideal scent, it is one that seems to combine some of the best aspects of many loved categories and is different from the rest of my wardrobe. Sometimes I love it, sometimes I like it, but now I just can't leave it alone.

Vintage Ungaro (dark amber) comes across as smooth, sweet and amber-dominant, with great depth and a little complexity. It smells edible without being excessively gourmand. Vanilla lovers are likely to enjoy it. Don't be fooled by Citrus being the primary accord listed here. You can see from the community's votes (above) that citrus is not even detectable by most people - me included. Ungaro has punch and some sillage, but is short-lived on me - just a couple of hours and it's all gone. Still, I've found myself craving it from time to time. Always a good sign!

This is another gem of the past ! One of the booziest openings I ever smelled , so rich and full it reaches the extreme limit of being too much but holds itself at one micro-millimeter from that limit . This is some kind near a "Stendhal syndrome" in a bottle : wear too much and will be surely overwhelmed by its beauty . Big oriental with such a lovely rose in the heart !

A lazy summer sunset. The first time I tried it on my skin Ungaro was a rainy summer afternoon. I always associate this perfume at that time, and I wear it when it rains. Unconsciously, perhaps because Ungaro placed the sun. Or maybe for that subtle melancholy that brings with it the fragrance. That slight sadness and joy that brings summer rain. I think that, yes, it is a cheerful scent mostly express joy but at times it is a bit melancholic, romantic after all. At times it reminds me in some way Roma (Biagiotti), Montana (Parfum de peau), and Senso of Ungaro. Had he been born today would be called Sense Intense, probably, that would have a whole other formula with a vague memory of his predecessor. Fats flowers at the start, a delicate amber, a thin sandalwood, little metal splinters, powdery base. smell like pink oleander blossoms, or white bindweed in the drydown. This review here up is about the edt version. The edp is a bomb of fatflowers, amber, and mou/tonka, so fruity bubblegum, which truly reminds me the firsts Joop (homme and femme), very bubble gum. Edt it is better, more under control.

This is a beautiful perfume. I don't have a long history with this fragrance and so I don't feel comfortable expounding upon it like other scents I've worn for ages. It is a sweet floral and yes rather bubble gummy in the opening. I would read the other reviews for real insight into this perfume. What I did want to say is that I really do find that with these big powerhouse perfumes, "less (really) is more." Do yourself and others a favor and try just dotting it on. It blossoms your perfume into a heavenly aura. Sitting here pre-shower and sampling 5 big perfumes (I think I smell kinda great) I will say that those small dots of scent are what draw you in to get the best effect. I'm a sprayer for the most part but my big, strong perfumes do benefit from dabs onto the skin, not sprayed. Now off to shower away the...wait for it...(laugh later) Rumba Accenti Senso Eau du Soir Ungaro Happy sniffing! I'll open a window for a bit to let out the cloud of vapor!

Ungaro is one of the reasons why my heart belongs to vintage perfumes. Although the aldehydic note is prominent (consider the era), it does not control the fragrance or overshadow how masterfully its citrus, animalic, and floral notes are blended. Ungaro is about self-confidence and control. You lead at the office until five; then you slip off your power suit jacket, adjust your silk camisole, and tousle your hair before heading out the door to your first date. Fussing at the mirror is neither required nor considered. Ungaro is a statement of its day but it easily withstands the test of time, and although this is a female-centric review, the bottle is definitely unisex. I highly recommend Ungaro for anyone with an appreciation for vintage perfumes. This review is for the vintage formula, Eau de parfum.

This is for the eau de parfum in the curved bottle. Michael Edwards classifies this as a floral oriental, and according to his book there have been two formulations after the 1977 original; 1990 and 2007. For a more comprehensive history see Amy Ann’s review. My reaction is that this leans more to oriental than floral. The floral top notes disappear very quickly ( including the aldehydes) and the rose mid note is not very pronounced. The base notes of tonka, Amber and vanilla with a hint of cardamom is the essence of the fragrance. Longevity is about 3-4 hours, but I apply it lightly, and sillage is moderate. I acquired this primarily to satisfy my curiosity. This is office friendly. I would wear this at casual venues. I really like it but it is not something that excites me or intrigues me.

This begins with at least a nod to Chanel No. 5, but then goes in a more oriental direction. However, it never becomes anything like Opium or Obsession; the floral/aldehydic chypre type opening persists but is softened by the mild oriental base. As you might expect, it's rich and natural smelling, so long as the aldehydes don't bother you. The floral notes are obvious at first but then recede substantially, so that a guy could wear this if he likes "unisex" scents. Apparently, it's very difficult to find now, but I was fortunate to recently obtain a large bottle and can swap half ounce decants for those who can't find it anywhere else.

When one go wrong, the other follows. Era of internet. This perfume was not made in 1977 as you find written everywhere. It is a 1990 creation. I've got documentation in paper and I well remember the launch. But internet can help because, if you need confirmations, on the official site of Emanuel Ungaro is clearly written "The first fragrance “Diva” was launched in 1983 and was followed by other successful fragrances for both women and men." I have already posted a review of this perfect fragrance (below) who many other, expecially in niche, have dared to imitate without the same results.

I found this lovely fragrance in a bodycream at a Florida perfume shop some years ago and was stunned to know it was in a discounted area in the middle of the store. Yes, does remind you of Joop, but is more floral to me and mellow. The Jar of cream is a beautiful shell shaped lapidus blue and the bottom is frosted glass. And the it labeled "seduction du corps". Interesting!

Sour, juicy and perfumy. Fun but not casual or relaxed. The top is a tour de force, a fragrance that makes a GRAND ENTRANCE. I'm fine with this categorized as an oriental but many orientals vibrate to the deep and resiny and that's not Ungaro. This really vibrates high on me, the white flowers smell yellow and nectary, and there is a constant fresh rose.

Mh... not really my cup of tea. I expected a powerful fragrance and I found the power of this lasting only a couple of minutes. It's a classic of the 80s but not as long lasting as the scents of that time. Anyway I discovered how good were the fruity notes in that period. Round and sweet, not sugary as they are now!

This is one of the gems in my collection. A cross between Joop femme and LouLou. More classy and somehow "younger" than the first and more formal and sophisticated than the second. A perfume with a personality, the way they used to make them (cliche, but true). A very magnetic smell.

It's hard to believe this scent came out in 1977 because for me it screams 1985. I can see a woman in a sharp cut big bold shoulder pad Claude Montana suit sporting this scent. You know with hair a mile high and large gold button earrings to boot. Watch out she means business!

This one was created loong before 1991. I have a bottle from 1990 in blue and another one,completly different ,clearly v much older. Same name ,different bottles with different content. My guess is that it's only a typing mistake.Instead of 1977 it's more likely 1987.

I have the original ( pictured here), and the curved purple bottle. Original, does to me, smell like Joop’s distant cousin. The curved purple bottle smells like Plumeria to me. Linear plumeria.

The bottle shown is the 1990 version, not the original 1977 version. The 1990 version to me, smells as if Joop! and Poison had a baby and named it Ungaro.. .absolutely superb!
