English Leather Black

Good stuff. Dark with an almost bitter presence. Dry down is pleasant, after about an hour it's where I like it. It has a rather utilitarian, outdoor, rugged ambience. Something reminiscent of the mid to late 1960s here. A wistful simplicity is evoked. Images of a huge old tree with a rubber tire swing in an isolated backyard some thirty feet from the freight train tracks. Then the thought of two sweaty adults sharing a forty on a late spring afternoon with no one else around. The breeze blows, the sky is still a crisp blue devoid of chemtrails, and you wake to see a grasshopper standing on your arm. The diesel odor from the train lingers in the air with the scent of the tire, which has just a little of the previous evening's rainwater in it. You suspect the dragonflies are hip to it as well. Very evocative for just a song!

I actually am wearing this scent today, as I borrowed some from a male friend, and then decided to purchase a bottle for myself after receiving numerous complements. I do notice the citrusy top note, but also detect the refreshingly dry woods, amber,leather, and a moderate musk (almost too much for my taste, so I don't spray on too much!). I am not sure what is happening with these folks who say English Leather Black does not last, because on me it sometimes lasts six hours or more (but not always), plus it has a decent sillage for a men's scent. I certainly suggest that the ladies try this fragrance for themselves, especially if you like the non-floral scents.

I would also like to add that I own more than 40 fragrances- some cheapies and many expensive ones. I am on a quest to find something that smells like this, but with better staying powers. Thus far I have found noting smelling even remotely like this, I know some people complain that it is linear. I like that about it. I have many frags that open great and the dry down is horrible. AS an older guy I cannot handle too much sweetness in fragrances, and ELB is never sweet. A true masculine smell. I own a half a dozen bottles of this to make sure I will not run out if I cannot get it any longer! This has been my signature fragrance for about a decade now.

This opens like a freight train. Strong spice and citrus combine to make it sharp, while the middle/base musky and woody notes give it great depth. The leather in this is very much overwhelmed by the sharp top-notes. After about 30 minutes it is really at its best and I detect something similar to a pungent tobacco-like note coming through, probably the "leather". Like a freight train, it is also soon gone and after an hour it is really close to the skin. This is a very good fragrance considering the cheap price for which it can be bought and I love the bottle. If only it lasted longer...

I am mostly interested in the middle and base notes of cologne, and in my opinion, ELB is a great scent. Some people find it unrefined, I think it is masculine. I find many of the really high-end designer perfumes absolutely nauseating and way too sweet or "refined" - and no, I am not a very mucho guy. The fact that this stays on me all day and is still noticeable in the evening is another plus. My wife loves it as well. My favorite for now.

Very citrusy up top... and has more of that "sporty" men' s cologne vibe than I would have liked. However, I appreciate how NOT sweet this one is. The tobacco-leather notes do emerge slowly and then the whole affair goes to a skin scent. I think this could be pretty sexy depending on the setting and mood when worn. Definitely one I will save for summer. I am curious to see how it does in the heat.

I love English Leather Black! It smells beautifully sweet, woody, spicy and leathery on me. It's soft and gentle, and comforting. Lovely. And it lasts well, and projects well, which has brought me quite a few compliments in the last few days! It's a very nice perfume. And I love the bottle!!

I'm a big guy, I sweat quite a bit. This stuff is strong and lasts a long time, that's all I need. It isn't fruity for you fruity dudes out there. Yea I agree, it kinda smells like jovan musk which I wore to my prom in 87. Nuff said.

Great woody dark & spicy cologne 👌 very manly & perfect for fall & winter! It's in the same ballpark as Drakkar noir! I love it & smells like the 70's💝

bitter smoky bergamot great scent

I could not resist the Walmart buy... My wife thought I was crazy! After spending Thanksgiving with my in-laws I was snooping in their medicine cabnet and noticed an old bottle of the original English Leather and I couldn't resist the temptation of giving it a try. It brought back memories of childhood and smelling this OLD 70s Scent. I think I would be willing to give a new bottle of English Leather a try. Hoping that the NEW juice might smell... maybe better? While in Walmart going through the Christmas $3 cologne section I saw the English Leather Original and English Leather Black. I never seen the BLACK flanker. How could I go wrong! Since my wife threatened me if I bought the Original so I got permission to try the BLACK. Now let me backtrack a bit... I did get a chance to explore the Niche level Perfumes while on the Chicago Miracle Mile last week end. I fell in love with some of the Luxurious Tom Ford fragrances. So no, I'm not crazy, but I do believe its all in the juice! I have not broke down and given permission to myself to sacrifice half a paycheck to obtain that level of expertise creations. So I kind of feel bad about even going here! But, I'm trying to have some fun with trying to get a bigger picture of men fragrances...In hopes of finding my Signature Scent... TRY'EM all... So back to the English Leather Black. I'm really impressed! It really smells nice! NOTHING like the Original, I mean NOTHING! Maybe more like the Burberry fragrances. Its a smooth sweet spiced tobacco leathery musk that is fairly linear not changing much all the way through the dry down. How could someone not like this interpretation of an American classic.

Got this as a gift. Smells like a strong pile of musk mixed with rubbing alcohol. Both strong, but still smells ok. It does smell better than foot sweat, but it's no Chanel. If you want citrus, you've come to the wrong place, it's nowhere. This stuff will overtake the room with ease, If that's your goal, than purchase it, it's around $10 bucks for 1OZ giftset on fragrancenet.. I'd rate it a 5/10. Scent: 5 Longevity:10 Sillage:9 Quality/Refined:2 It is quite strong, and it does easily last 8-12 hours. I've waited for the musk and leather scent to come around and develop, their decent, it just stays strong, although much more musk than leather. Just don't spray too much, everyone in the office or bar will be coughing when you walk in the door........ Great for a manual labor job or outdoor work as it stays on skin and clothes all day. Could be the perfect Halloween cologne as well. Bad for intimate moments when your about to kiss that beautiful, inshape, naturally curvy, black haired girl, you might not get a next date!!! I've decided to keep this scent, as longevity is great and i'll use it when Im gonna be outdoors for extended periods of time.

The first 10-15 sec reminds me of bat urin (don't ask me how I know what that smells like, I know) I think its a synthatic rosemary... But then the beautiful bergamot and green notes hit and its kinda like a green garden in a damp hot and sunny sommer midday. continues on like that for a long time then slowly comes abit of oak mossy feel to the green. I also get a bit of coka cola vibe (very small) No leather off of my skin. There is nothing sweet in this, all fuzzy bubly green and oak mossy. This could be The little brother of by Antonio Puig's master piece Quorum for men. It has a bit of that masculin "I don't care what you think" oomph to it. 6/10 Projection is loud for the first 1, then settles to skin 6/10 Scent: not for everyone, specialy not for under 18 (hair on chest required) 5/10 versatility: Not appreciated by everone, not a people pleaser. You get what you pay for. not bad, but not great.

This cheapy really does smell "black" to me. It's sweet and woody, and the darkly-stained wooden cap kind of alludes to what they were going for. I didn't notice it evolving much, but it makes me think of nicely-finished ebony or some other exotic hardwood, with a little leather in there too. I got a 1.7 oz (a monster size for me) for next to nothing. It's not really that strong, and I think it merits 3-4 sprays where I might normally do 2 but it took me a while to realize that. I don't think this would surprise anyone in a bad way or a good way. I was thinking of getting rid of it in favor of more expensive brands, but then I realized that nothing I've owned or even tried has had quite this type of polished wood vibe, so I kept it for a while for its uniqueness.

The notes listed here have GOT to be wrong. English Leather opens with a very strong citrus blast. It's something I generally stay away from, and it actually turned me off the first time I tried it. But the second time, I actually thought it was done quite well. Not to lemony . . . just citrusy. And then the citrus fade to uncover a strong musky leathery spicy concoction. This fragrance is extremely masculine and adventurous. Smells like something Indiana Jones would wear.

You don't want to put your nose on this right away, or at least I don't. I have, twice, and both times the green citrus was overpowering and it irritated my nose. So this, my third try, I spray four blasts down my t shirt and wait a minute or two and then put my nose to it. That's much better. I get the cola vibe and the non-descript citrus sorta brings to mind Lemon Pepsi for a bit but as it dries down, some wood notes come in, not really picking up much sandalwood per se, but more like a polished dark wood the cola note fades as it dries down and then there is a muskiness and I wonder if the musk is where the cola note came from. The leather is the kind you find inside of a baseball glove if you can pick it out from under the musk. This isn't a a bad scent. I wouldn't wear it anywhere fancy. Not saying it couldn't be done, but I have other frags I like a lot better. It might lend itself to layering. I dunno. It's cheap but not great.

This is by far the most disgusting mess I've ever smelled in my life. Its like burnt hair and celery salt - with a black licorice winter tire section at Auto Zone finish.

Smells just like Kingsford charcoal, not sure why someone would wear this. Stick with the original English leather

A funky Coca-Cola woody scent. I only get the slightest abstraction of leather, probably because I'm looking for that. In a blind test I wouldn't say there's leather there at all. And no clear citrus, but a buried citrus 'zing' might be what gives the fizz? This 'fizzing' nuance is very enjoyable. Wood & fizzy softdrink, but's that's OK. Weird-in-a-nice-way; the gourmand cola-funk is a definite like. I get this more so than the reviewer below. (4trl0er) (Reformulation casualty?) Looks like Longevity kills it though. I'm going to give this a solid fair-go by over-spraying, because it's so interesting & off-beat by my perception, but not in a gimmicky way to be a deliberate or quirky attention seeker. Lets see ? --- UPDATE FRI 9 JUL 2021 --- I must be nose-blind to the aromachems in this one. Did a very generous overspray on each arm at 1pm & left for work. I got the above funky Coca-Cola smell for about 20minutes. I lost all awareness of this frag's smell after an hour. At 9:30pm a co-worker arrived for the next shift & said "wow, that's a strong aftershave you're wearing" This was in a largish foyer at around 3.5 meters. Later in the office, at about 1 to 1.5 meters, he further said..."that aftershave; smells like leather & Aeroguard (a personal insect repellent) So longevity & sillage were still rocking eight & a half hours later. It's winter now; foyer was mildly heated, office more so. So there you go. It lasts but I can't smell it.

Super cheapo niche from the early days of niche! I have an early bottle so keep that in mind. This is strong and it lasts, but the best thing is that it has an abstract, "black"/industrial/charred wood quality that isn't too harsh to enjoy. No obvious lavender and just a touch of sweetness. Couldn't have asked for anything better, all things considered. In some ways this is similar to my vintage 273 Men by Hayman, in that it's simple, natural-smelling, "masculine," and could be used for layering. However, 273 is more conventional (with lavender) and less interesting (no charred wood type quality), though layering the two is something I may try. After the first few hours, it gets weaker and becomes a bit powdery, so a "touch up" spray could be a good idea for those who really enjoy the charred wood type thing. At current prices, a few sprays for the entire day is quite the bargain!
