Beyond Paradise

(Comparison of original releases of the EdT and the EdP) Can I get through this without mentioning You Know Who? Challenge easily accepted. Beyond Paradise is supposed to evoke the experience of walking through a tropical garden full of exotic flowers. It doesn’t. Not really. It is gorgeous, though. And it just goes to show that even in the 2000s Estée Lauder still knew how to make a beautiful and unique perfume. Whether or not they knew what to do with it after making it is a different question. And whether or not it is for a different brand that they own is a completely different story. Time-told answers since have yielded a poor batting average. Anyway, back to Beyond Paradise. And we’ll begin with the EdT since that is where I started with this comparison wearing. There is a hesperidic melange at the top, primarily of the zesty and oily variety, accented by pale green florals. Immediately you get an idea of Beyond Paradise’s mandate: abstraction. The EdP opens almost identically but all notes are far more saturated and vivid. The EdT’s abstract white floral heart is jasmine and honeysuckle forward for sure, and the jasmine in particular is superb. It smells exactly like what’s growing in my backyard. But the sweet slightly orangey honeysuckle really makes you second guess yourself for a second - “wait, is this really jasmine?” When this hits in the EdP, where these notes are more concentrated, the pyramid calls out cattleya orchid (actually laelia, which is very frequently hybridized with cattleya to where you rarely find one without some DNA of the other) and as an orchid grower very experienced with cattleyas, for the first and only time in my life a perfume that calls out orchid actually gets pretty darn close. Nice! The jasmine is noticeably more indolic in the EdP, which certainly helps with this. I never really pulled philodendron from the EdT, but its mild, bitter green, and earthy aroma was certainly noticeable in the EdP. What is supposed to evoke the humidity of the tropics earlier on in both concentrations is a sort of dewy and aquatic texture that doesn’t exactly come across as warm misty or wet air, but rather like you’re perceiving the flowers through a bit of wet cling film. I am speaking of a slight textural perception, this is not an aquatic perfume, make no misinterpretations. The dry downs are virtually the same with a quite unique green and bitter bright wood finish and a bit of floral musks. The general performance of both is shockingly similar despite the EdP’s higher concentration; longevity, projection, and sillage are virtually identical as far as I can tell. This is a great perfume, it truly is, but it is a bit of an oddball. I have yet to encounter an abstract floral quite like it. Perhaps that’s why Lauder discontinued it; it was just a bit too weird for the modern and younger noses, but that begs the question of shouldn’t a house try to offer something a bit odd like this every blue moon or so? Beyond Paradise was incredibly popular, even though by mainstream tastes it probably had no right to be, so why abandon something that sells well even if people don’t get it (particularly a growing market segment that doesn’t really buy what you sell regardless)? It’s a mystery that probably only has some semblance of an answer in an old presentation given in a Lauder board room. I find Beyond Paradise very addictive, and very fascinating - and it just smells great. In my opinion this is at the top of the list of Becker’s most creative compositions, and short of going overboard with more superlatives and laudings and a perfect five star review there’s not much else to say - oh wait.... Damn it.

I have a 100ml, unused, original rainbow bottle of this, still in its box, which I'm pretty sure I bought duty free in around 2003/2004. So, when this first came out, or very soon after Interestingly, it has no cellophane wrapper and can't ever have done, as the price sticker is attached directly to the back of the box. Then, I also have a 100ml (again, original rainbow!) nearly full Tester bottle, which I bought in about 2006, as a back-up. This is even though I hadn't opened the original bottle yet, lol. I tend to buy back-ups of things I really love the look of, just in case they get lost, or damaged. So, that shows you how much I liked this bottle. The juice in the rainbow Tester bottle is still in great shape, by the way, @Jbuchiere - hasn't turned at all. Hopefully, the same can be said for the unopened original bottle. So, I'm guessing they changed it for economic reasons and/or because Aerin prefers minimalism (or thinks we do); not because things go off sooner in pretty bottles. ...which I have never found they do. I think it was a big mistake for them to change the bottle. Would have been quite nice if they had, also, made a small, travel spray version (maybe 20ml?), in a sleeker shape, for practical reasons. A flatter teardrop-shape, would have been nice, for example. However, they should have retained the original rounded tear-drop shape for the larger sizes and the beautiful rainbow colours for all sizes. In terms of the fragrance itself, I think it must depend on the person wearing it. I don't get laundry detergent, or swimming pool, or smoke, or gasolene, at all. On my skin, it's mostly the same honeysuckle I used to smell, outside the backdoor of my mum's house, as a child. Then there is some hyacinth and a background of jasmine and gardenia. It goes slightly bubblegummy, on me, but in a pleasant and subtle way. It's not overly sweet, at all. The fruits are also there, if you look for them, but they are very much in the background and if you didn't look for them, you would probably just read them as slightly fruity facets of the flowers. It is, predominantly, a fresh, but reasonably sweet, floral. Not too sweet and not too sour. There is no discernible woody base, as such - but, there is a hint of what I would describe as "woody stems". Like the smell you get when you prune a bush; as opposed to a timber smell. There may be a hint of (undisclosed) vanilla; but, if so, it is extremely subtle. This is a gorgeous fragrance on those it suits and who can fully appreciate its delicate, prismatic beauty. I, previously, rated it as a Like, rather than a Love, as I tend to gravitate more towards creamier/buttery, vanilla-rich, all-white tuberose-based florals, with sweeter fruits than this, like peaches and apricots. However, after trying Beyond Paradise again today, I have upgraded it to a Love. Maybe it particularly suits this spring day? It's not what I would call a sexy fragrance and it never has been. It's more innocent and pure, if anything - but, it is truly beautiful nonetheless.

I was given a miniature of this one by a wonderful and kind fragrantican (thank you so much). I had a huge curiosity regarding this one, since I've heard great and terrible things about it. I tend to enjoy polarizing perfumes, must admit. Oh, and the gorgeous bottle and suggestive name were to die for. So today I gave it a wear. It was a weird not-really-sunny day, some clouds, a cold wind, not too hot. Although it's late May, it seems like early Autumn. I thought how wonderful a floral perfume could be today, and that's why I decided to wear it. I had already looked at the notes and I was intrigued by them, as I usually love jasmine and hyacinth. At first, it's all about undefined flowers and some light temporary citrics. The feeling I get is the same as when I enter a florist. The most similar perfume to that full, lush undefined smell that I've tried. As long as it dries down, it gets warmer, and it's always very exotic. It's a really contradictory perfume, as it's warm and fresh at the same time, dewy, wet and creamy. Extremely tropical, like nothing I've smelled before. It's undescribable. Very difficult to point notes, because they don't work separately but more like an all-together work. I say the one that actually stands out a bit is creamy jasmine. I can also smell a dewy greeness which may come from the hyacint. I can't really say much more, except that this is a really complex fragrance, but overall so pleasing and relaxed... I truly don't understand why some many despise it. I guess its due to the floral notes, which may be too much for some, like a floral overdose. Anyways, I find it extremely beautiful and shiny, complex and abstract, but relaxed and casual. It's for sure one of the best florals I've tried regarding non-soliflores. I actually don't find it to be a summer fragrance as it's suggested by the graphic: it would be, perhaps, too heavy for that. More like a mid-late spring, early autumn perfume. Almost forgot to mention the great lasting power and great sillage of this one, so great perfomance overall. Not too strong, but always present for many hours, which is great if you value it. First impression of this scent is always ozonic-metallic. Then Lily of the Valley, which is well done. Hyacinth - ok, not bad. Honeysuckle? No, not really. Most of this scent is about flowers rather than from flowers. It’s an idea, a conception, of flowers, but personally I’d prefer the real ones, without the ozonic saltiness. What I like about floral scents is the creaminess, the waxy smell of petals, which is part of the extracted oils and absolutes. When the creamy and waxy elements are absent because the florals are constructed, you get Matisse rather than Maxfield Parrish. So this is a Matisse, or perhaps a Gauguin, of a scent. I enjoy real flowers and I like smelling of them (sorry Luca Turin) but still, Beyond Paradise is very good. It lasts well, it was utterly unique when it came out, and if it has suffered, it’s because everyone imitated it. I can’t smell it “fresh” because it spawned many similar scents. And, in the 10+ years since its release, I've smelled it everywhere - it is really popular. I’m pleased to have bought two little bottles so I’m having a chance to wear and experience it properly. It has the signature Estee Lauder musky aldehydes and longevity, and it is quite a tropical floral mix, so perhaps more appropriate in summer; one can imagine the beach, the sarong and the flower behind the ear. Despite personally preferring different scents, I can see this is very accomplished, so 9/10 for artistry.

Rather than look for my old review and update it, I'm just going to re-review this one, perhaps in the hope that I can somehow jack up the rating, because I think this deserves at least a solid four. But I'm also wearing/smelling the original formulation of this perfume, which I have stored in my refrigerator in its original (ridiculous but adorable) bottle for the past 20 years. It was a gift from my late FIL, and I seldom wore it, so the bottle is nearly full. I appreciate perfume more now than I used to, and I am very glad to have this, even though I don't wear it very often. That "wet garden" accord, the so-called "Eden" aromachemical, is something else--it really does remind me of going into a rainforest, filled with luscious white florals. I keep picking up an almost buttery, tuberose-like note, but I think it's the ambrette combined with the jasmine. It's almost unctuous with that creamy amber in the base. I like this immensely, but I have not smelled the current formulation, and I suspect that it comes up short. Most of the EL reformulations seem to be in a sorry state right now, which makes me very glad that I have a sizeable stockpile of the vintage bottles and that I somehow persuaded my husband to let them live in our refrigerator. Updated the longevity from long-lasting to eternal--I could smell it 24 hours later, and after washing it off. Good thing I love it!

I still have my original bottle, which I keep in the refrigerator and wear rarely, but always with supreme enjoyment. This is such a loud, bold, sopping-wet floral. I can't help but wonder whether the too-low Fragrantica rating is the result of many people sniffing from bottles that have turned--Luca Turin, a huge fan of the scent, by Calice Becker, said that his decant went bad after some years, but he remembered it in his glory days so didn't deduct points. I haven't smelled the reformulation, in the horrible generic pseudo Art Deco bottles that always seem determined to break in pieces with ordinary use, but I doubt it is as good as this. I don't think my bottle has gone off in the slightest, but I don't want to sell the 85% or 90% that remains in the big bottle; I'd rather use it and think of how it always makes me feel like I'm inside a vast conservatory full of tropical flowers, or perhaps that crazy garden in Suddenly Last Summer, my beau ideal of gothic verdancy. Also, I think the weird off-putting note that some mention might be calone, although it isn't listed and I can't swear to it. But I bet it is a big part of that "Wet Eden" accord, and calone tends to be polarizing. It doesn't bother me in this fragrance, but I tend to appreciate "bursting floralcy" more than most.

This is a beautiful clean floral, in the same way that EL's Pleasures is a clean floral. Just as Pleasures evokes rain and humidity to me, so does this. It feels as refreshing as a cool rain on a hot day but in this case, I am in a rain forest and not a tended garden. I first purchased a mini and was a little thrown by the Calone note on opening, but I have since fallen in love with the beautiful aquatic floral dry down despite intensely disliking the opening. I've learned long ago to wait a fragrance out, and this didn't disappoint as the dry down is lovely and lasts all day on me. I also love how this fragrance isn't overbearing and won't invade other's space but leaves a nice cool aura around me. I've since purchased a new sealed vintage bottle which has fortunately held up very well. A few sprays and I am rewarded with a gorgeous rain drenched tropical paradise. Though I'm curious about the new version, I couldn't imagine it being as good as this considering some of the missing notes, one of which is gardenia. Since I'm really happy with the purchase I already made, I'm in no great hurry to find out.

I have a bit of a history with this fragrance. My mom got it for me when it originally came out and I wore it religiously throughout high school until college when I was no longer allowed to wear perfumes. It was a beautiful and exotic white floral, a even blend of jasmine, frangipani, orange blossom, and orchid, what I imagined Hawaii must smell like. Up until that point it was the best tropical scent I had come across and worked very well with my body chemistry. I got more compliments on this perfume than any other I have worn to date. Fast forward to the end of college and I was eager to rekindle my love of this scent, and all perfume in general, but I found something about it had changed. All I get now is jasmine and tiare that dries down to a distinct smell of plastic. The lasting power and sillage also disappeared. Needless to say I was disappointed. So either I am fondly remembering what I thought was a beautiful scent, my body chemistry changed, or Estee Lauder changed their formula sometime after I purchased my last cherished bottle in 2005.

I used this one in the early aughts when it came out and loved it. I was super excited to find a mini of the original bottle and formulation in a thrift store. It smells exactly as I remember it: a tropical garden with heavy, salty, humid, air wafting through it. It's staying power on me is unreal too, lasting 10+ hours on my skin. I would say it's heavier than EL Pleasures. If Pleasures is a spring meadow, thick with blooms, and swaying in a gentle breeze, BP is a tropical plant and flower nursery hot house just after the sprinklers have run. The hyacinth, bergamot, gardenia, and honeysuckle are most prominent to me, with the musk and amber barreling through the middle notes after an hour or so. I feel like it's pretty linear from there, not changing much as the hours pass, which I don't mind. I have trouble smelling the sweet orange blossoms at any point, or the hibiscus. Anyone know if the current version is significantly different? I'd forgotten how much I love this one and may consider purchasing the newer version, if it's similar.

Is Beyond Paradise beauty or beast? Many say beast. I say beauty, definitely beauty! It's brilliantly prismatic. A psychedelic floral experience is what I find here. Bold. Colorful. Vibrant. Rich. It's thick and dense with foliage. This is no wallflower, it's the wetlands of dreams. Spraying it feels as if I've indulged in an intoxicating floral cocktail, one both shaken and stirred. It's absolutely not a soliflore. I can detect every single note in this multi-hued creation, and that's just in the first 60 seconds! Every flower blooms at once, not gently or slowly while you are not looking, but immediately and with quite a bit of urgency. The florals are lush and damp, not just misted, but drenched...infused. Projection is not as I would have imagined, given the expansive feel it has on my skin. Longevity is exceptional. Beyond Paradise is a much deserved floral vacation. Lose yourself on the trip. I do.

I’m another of those who fell in love with this scent as a teenager, and as I recently found an unopened vintage bottle on eBay I jumped at the opportunity to have it back in my collection. There is always a risk with such things, but in this instance it was a risk worth taking; it smells just like I remember. So - a bold, lush floral. Loads of hyacinth in the initial spray, against a lightly juicy citrus background. Jasmine and honeysuckle are prominent also. It has a musky backbone that works just perfectly with the florals. While wearing it you are walking through a greenhouse of tropical flowers, or perhaps the garden of eden. A beautiful symphony, which holds together perfectly in the drydown for literally hours. The bottle is beautiful also; a real tribute to the masterpiece contained within. This is, hands down, my favourite floral.

Absolutely adore this! A shower under a waterfall in a lush green forest on a hot day, if you also remembered to bring along your scented shampoo etc. ;) This feels like the pure source material for so many bath products that have followed -- in a good way! Heaven on a hot day. I get lots of gardenia, abstract white floral, a smidge of banana, and that heavenly misty/humid air note. The middle is gorgeous too, as if your skin has started warming up again now you're out of the waterfall-shower, and the sun is starting to set, and the night flowers are opening up. The greenery and something a little spicy comes out more in the middle for me too. Side note: I have a little L'Artisan Bucoliques de Provence left on my arm from earlier today, and it's mixing with BP to make the most gorgeous freshly powdered after a shower scent. <3

I fell head over heels with that perfume in my twenties because it was unlike anything I've tried before. From the frag and bottle esthetics, I realize today how Beyond Paradise stands apart from Estee Lauder's other offerings. At that time, I had no idea of the notes. I just adored the banana whiff against all that joyous, tropical exuberance! For nostalgia sake, I've tried it from the current boring bottle (discontinuing the rainbow bottle is heart-stabbing). At least, the juice inside remained exactly the same one from my memories. Its springtime gaiety reminded me of the floral bouquet from Blanche de Byredo, I've been acquainted with since then. Fortunately, that fantasy banana layer still lingering.

I'm glad I rediscovered this the other day. It smells like wet hyacinths to me, with a jasmine that's not too indolic. Plus, it lasts *forever.* I need to check to make sure I marked the appropriate boxes. A little of this stuff goes a very long way. I have the original formulation, in the original bottle, but it has been in the refrigerator for several years and smells the way I remember smelling it when I received it, as a gift from my EL-loyalist FIL, only now for some reason I like it a lot more. It reminds me a bit of Elizabeth Taylor's Gardenia, but with stronger aquatic notes and a much more complicated base. There's a bit of the fancy soap smell I love, too.

I don't know why I never tried this before, for some reason the bottle is not so appealing to me. I like no frills-bottles, sleek and simple, easy to carry in my bag. So, the bottle put me off, but what's inside it... my goodness! Pure heaven, delightful jasmin, hyacith, gardenia, honeysuckle and more wonderful ingredients than you can wish for! This reminds me of a perfume I really loved way back in the eighties wen I was twentysomething, Lumiere by Rochas. It was my favourite summer scent for many years but it is sadly discontinued. I have now found this beautiful perfume which can keep the memory of Lumiere alive. This one is going on top of my wishlist!

I'm surprised to see so many dislikes on this! I love it. A perfect summer holiday perfume; floral, light, fresh. It smells tropical without being fruity, and soapy without being too synthetic or powdery. The gardenia comes out most on my skin, and the hibiscus is surprisingly easy to pick up as well! I grew up around hibiscus and I'm very happy to be able to smell that unusual note in this. I can see myself taking a bottle of Beyond Paradise with me on an island vacation. It's very wearable, would mix well with sea and sand, and I wouldn't be too heartbroken if the bottle broke in my suitcase. I'm very happy to have this in my collection.

Personally, I love this perfume from very first time I had sniff. The first reason is on me this is a light floral perfume that I can use for everyday both of day and nightime. Second, for me this is a great jasmine scent that I got a huge fall in love. I got tons of compliment from peoples on the street. I don't know why maybe it's about chemistry of my skin. Daytime it's a various floral but nightime it's a very cool jasmine on me. ( That's why I love to use only in the evening or rainy day.) Finally, it's a beautiful, soft, sentiment and sensual. I love it. Worth for my money.

I tried this first by sniffing the bottle - too strong then later on paper - yuck! but the bottle is so pretty and it has some great reviews... so I finally bought a bottle used so I could sample freely and I now love it - it is so different on skin lovely creamy floral white flower honeysuckle sweet but lavender keeps it from being sickeningly sweet like honeysuckle can be - lasts for ages and requires just a dab I'm sure it could easily be over done and that is probably where it becomes nasty smelling to people - but that happens with most strong fragrance ... don't be afraid!

I have had a mostly full bottle of this in the refrigerator for several years, and tonight I decided to give it another try--I like it much better now, and I don't know why I didn't care for it before. The hyacinth top note is dominant for me, but that's just fine because I love hyacinth. I get a soapy-creamy gardenia scent, too, which reminds me of luxe soaps and Elizabeth Taylor's Gardenia (a cheapie I love). This smells very summery, but sometimes I like to wear summer fragrances in the winter, like a little olfactory vacation.

What a smell! I know nothing that's quite like it. I find it uplifting and mysterious at the same time. Puts me in a great mood. I have never owned, but always loved it - and I stand by this, no matter if my friend U., the one with the super-nose, says this smells like a toilet spray. Thinking back, mere consideration towards her sensibilities may have been the reason I never purchased Beyond Paradise. Am I too good a friend? That may VERY WELL be the case. I have loved this fragrance since my mom first began wearing it in my teen years. Once in a blue moon I was allowed to wear it. I think of happy days and exciting nights. It is very lush,and in my opinion dark. It's not a bright sunny beach paradise, it is a night in Rio, hot, strong, and earthy. I wish I had words to better descirbe my affection for this fragrance but for me the whole thing, the name, the bottle the scent itself are perfect.

I used to love beyond paradise. It smells so beautiful (as I've described it in my first review.) I bought a second bottle yesterday though and.... IT SMELLED TERRIBLE!! Did they reformulate this?? I sprayed some on (from my first bottle) on my right wrist and I also did with my second (new) bottle on my left and the difference is obvious. New reformulated version SUCKS big time. I hate it that I spent money on it. I seriously want to cry. :(

Wearing Beyond paradise is like being enveloped in a warm, damp, impossibly thick suffocating mist of spring and tropical flowers. Then it turns into dryer sheets. It's a bit quirky, but it works. I can honestly say I don't own anything that smells like it. It's sort of like YSL's Paris, but with green and white florals instead. Ridiculous projection and longevity. Despite its lush tropical opening, this doesn't work in hot weather at all.

To preface: new bottle is hideous, scent is glorious. Rich, tropical white flowers. Reminiscent of EL Tuberose Gardenia but not as thoroughly gardenia, and not as squeaky clean. BP has a richness that underlies the florals, not exactly skank but something not entirely good girl, either. Sillage and projection are good but not overpowering. I think this is well-executed. I look forward to using this all through the summer.

I remember smelling this when i was about 9 years old... i fell in love and begged my mom for a bottle. she denied it from me because she felt that it was too mature and floral for a 9 year old. in fact, she wouldnt let me wear any. i am looking forward to getting a bottle of this heady,humid, yet crisp juice.Its not mainstream or a quintessential pretty smell, but, in my opinion, it is unique and intoxicating.

You really have to love floral fragrances in order to enjoy and appreciate Beyond Paradise. Despite the polarizing reviews, I think it's amazing! Very rich and exotic....feels like getting off a plane at some Mediterranean resort destination and and catching the first whiff of fresh and humid air infused with blooming exotic flowers. Great sillage and longevity, but not overpowering.

It is absolutely fantastic ! I have no words to describe this amazing fragrance but every time you wear it it's like you live your own fairytale ... Once upon a time people could still have dreams ! Love was real ! Sex was not the most important thing ! That's how this perfume makes me feel and I don't give a shit if it's feminine ! I'm gonna wear whatever I want :) Kisses !!

I wouldn't describe this as floral, but rather a more damp-air-on-the-beach type scent. Because of this I'd save it for rainy or cold days, it gives me that nostaglic feeling of sitting on the beach with the waves lapping around my feet. I really do like it :) ignore the comments on here that put you off trying it. Test it, then judge. You might end up loving it

This definitely appears to be a love or hate thing and I love it- lots of tropical floral notes, and it lasts for quite a long time. I think this smells much "younger" than most floral perfumes, but it seems I might be in a minority on that one. I love this perfume, and it has become a favorite. I love the rainbow-colored bottle. Delightful!

I got my first bottle when I was 17 and it had a huge promo bc it had just been launched. I loved the unbelievable florals, but now l buy the rainbow bottle and it just smells like a stinky old bottle of perfume. How sad to smell your favorites get old and eventually unbearable. Thats the industry though

I know, Imwimsatt, what are they thinking? Probably its main selling point is/was the beautiful bottle. I know I wouldn't have, originally, bought it had it not been for the that. Maybe they're looking to use a multicoloured bottle for a new perfume and they're clearing the decks for it?

It's plumeria. Not the others: hyacinth, bergamot, etc. This is like walking through the gardens in Moorea, lifting your nose to the fragrant plumerias (frangiapani), in the rain, but with a little touch of something else tropical....can't put my finger on it. Wet.

So...I was sitting at the nurses' station at work, entranced by some gardenias a patient's family had brought, when bam! It hit me...I was surrounded by THIS smell! Beyond Paradise smells exactly like fresh gardenias. Mmmmm...must buy another bottle soon!

I really like this one. I'm sure I will be sending people to the hospital with allergies, but the honeysuckle and hyacinth in this one are truly beautiful. I'm not a big fan of flowery fragrances but this one is quite lovely in small doses.

My mom wore this a lot when I was a kid and it always reminds me of libraries probably because she was a lit teacher who read a lot. It's feminine and fresh floral. Overall a pleasant fragrance. I've also always loved the bottle.

I love everything about Beyond Paradise: The pretty floral aroma, the exotic beachy vacationishness, the adorable bottle (I'm on my third one). It's my go-to scent for spring and summer and I would even say it lifts my mood.

OMG!! THIS WAS MY JAAMMM IN COLLEGE! LOL. You could not tell me that my fragrance didn't bring the boys to the yard. 😂😂 I remember something sultry, fruity and fresh. Seeing this fragrance brings back so many memories.

Interesting that it is not listed in the notes but i get a very strong tiare note in this one. Heavenly tropic flowers with a burst of fresh fruits. İt is heady so might not be the best choice for hot summer days.

This was the first fancy perfume I ever wanted, when I was in college. I still have the bottle. The character of the scent really clashed with my general style, but whatever. I really liked it.
