Patchouly

This opinion is for those who think Etro Patchouly is a retro scent. I will play here the advocate of the accused. The fact the Etro patchouli is humid, earthy and vivid does not make it a retro smell. My adoration for this bottle was not love from the first sight. Being a patchouli fan I bought it, on the spur of a moment, not really being crazy about it. And month by month I started to appreciate it. Not sure if it commenced with a lovely wine-supper-evening with my husband and refreshing the fun from the Fatal Attraction film, but that was the moment when I realized this was exactly the scent of this tension on the screen. This fatal sensuality – on one hand so deeply sexy and moving on the other dirty and bad, this embodiment of the evil affair. Is it retro then? Oh no, it is definitely not. They had this romance in 80’s but how many of this difficult relations you can see in modern times? This story is as old as the humanity, and as modern as a fresh spring leaf. So what is Patchouly Etro? On me, this is pepper, natural, dark patchouly with a ray of citrus light. When I wear it, I feel so „comfortably numb”, as would sing Pink Floyd band. The opening gives a very short breeze of noble liquer swiftly coming into green and earthy patchouli. Do you see this shady, mixed wood with a mystery hidden in it? This is pretty much about that. And later on comes a stranger whom you know you should not have an affair with but still it ends up with it. Fancy?

The consultant says "I have one more thing to show you.", sprays this on the paper and hands it to me with a dramatic flourish. The smell reaches my nose, I close my eyes, lose any semblance of poise and make a GAH noise. "Glory. Yes! Mine.", I think to myself. "It's quite unique. I like it.", I say to the consultant hoping to make up for the previous, slightly unbalanced display. But no. I want this. I desire. Must go back to try on skin. Since I can't make a pie chart, impression by strength, (though these don't work in a disjointed matter, I wouldn't say): -dry; -sharp; -smoky; -patchouli, incense; Update: went back to try on skin. My very (dubious) soul resonates with this. Impression by strength: -dry/smoky/fresh/patchouli; -fresh/smooth incense; -an overall hint of coolness reminiscent of the way it always seems cooler in rural and forest areas; -something almost .. zesty and edible in the drydown. By that time, it sit very close, but if you squish your nose against your skin, it's there. Longevity, on skin (even intentionally oiled), is mediocre, which is tragic because it's not a scent you want to go away, ever, and the silage gets very close to skin quite soon. Overall, it's a very harmonious, unified fragrance. Apart from the obvious patchouli&incense, no note jumps at me, and I can't untangle it from the others.

Classic style fragrance based on only one patchouli arrangement. This patchouli begins with strength and a certain freshness accompanied by burgundy and citrus, here the bergamot feels more strongly. Immediately installed in the scent of the patchouli floral notes of pink, geranium rather light contributing the floral hue these notes remain behind tempering the terrosity of the patchouli, while feel the woods providing some sweetness, density and body. Undoubtedly, what most seduced me is the beautiful note of amber that brings warmth, shine, rich nuances of patchouli. Curiously the point of the mint creates a very interesting balsamic aura giving enough depth and projection to the aroma. All this makes this patchouli little earthy, dry, with a slight moldy effect, floral background and very deep. It has quality and is very well done. For the negative, I would say that it lacks some projection. It's classic, yes !! But this makes this fragrance in timeless, elegant and very wearable even for daily by moderate projection. The effect of this Patchouli is undoubtedly very hippie, very seventy! I do not know why, I associate this patchouli with a summer that I spent in Ibiza. I'll keep investigating. Rating: 8

Just when you think you've smelled all the patchouli hits, another one comes along. Etro Patchouli is nothing short of perfect. An elegant, woody patchouli that is supported in the opening by bergamot and orange for a short time, before an outstanding sandalwood takes over and balances out the patch note perfectly. There's a small compliment of flirtatious mint and cypress lurking in the background with some geranium in their hair and a light touch of amber/vanilla to lend some sweetness. But apart from the dominant patch/sandalwood presence in this, for me the star is artemisia. It announces itself in the opening, lasts throughout and is one of the most well executed examples of this note I've yet experienced. So...for me, Etro Patchouli is a refined, classy, woody patch featuring primarily sandalwood and artemisia, subtly supported by a compliment of other notes (mentioned above), and has gone straight up near the top of my favorite patchouli scents. So far I've been enjoying it's presence for 6 hours, from a few little dabs, so I'd suggest that it's performance is excellent also! I see an FB in my future for sure...in fact, I'm off to eBay now!

This patchouli seems to go through few desirable phases. Firstly, it is almost dry, woody and quite aromatic, later it turns more damp, chocolate/truffle-like and earthy. Some medicinal vegetal quality appears somewhere in the background. It's quite complex for a fragrance focusing on one note. That second phase is so beautiful. This leans just a tad more masculine, but very well could be unisex.

In a late 19th century Carmelite convent, in the hystorical pharmacy; among ointments and essential oils, obtained from medical plants; among dusty and musty shelves, the artemisia leaves, those of geranium, freshly crushed. And the resins, and the effluvium of incense...

When you just want to wear a really good, simple patchouli, this is it. It has the same elements as Patchouli Intense but without the wild lack of balance which makes PI horrible to me.

Hey man, this stuff is groovy. A very luminous, potent, earthy, spicy, bright patchouli. It's hard to avoid smelling like an old hippy with a patchouli fragrance and this still has all the familiar characteristics we associate with this kind of scent, but it's a good deal brighter and has a more transparent vibe to it. Gosh; it's practically thrown away the Kaftan and is wearing a suit. I just wish it wasn't so expensive. Very impressive... and lasts for days.

not bad. I like patchouli a lot, but I guess I prefer a sharper, greener patchouli than a sweet or spicier patchouli scent. But I still enjoyed this one a bit. Kind of starts of with a Italian Cyprus vibe, but sweeter and shorter lived. Then I mostly get patchouli and sort of like a spicy type tea. I wouldn't really say like Gucci Pour Homme II, but heavier because of the amber.

A beautiful patchouly with a camphor-like smell to clear the nostrils, and a caramel one to satisfy the mind. It is drier and greener than some other patchoulies, and is wonderfully woody in the drydown. Its place in the patchouli hall of fame is well deserved. ****(*)

An elegant, classy oriental perfume, fanatastic for true patchouly lovers. There is no sweetness in this one! Sharp orange opening and than smoky patchouly, patchouly, patchouly, musk and some dry vanilla. Very nice incensy overall smell.

Prominent artemisia in the opening followed by slightly dusty, cocoa-like patchouli with the slightest hint of mouldiness. Not sweet. I like it!

It's a powerful and interesting blend and holds really well over time. It spells more witchcraft than flowerpower.

Patchouli lovers rejoice! Etro Patchouly begins and ends as one great big patchouli bomb on my skin. It's what I might characterize as a green patchouli with a few woody notes. However, my nose detects zero additional scents. Lush Karma with some Clairol Herbal Green Essence Shampoo mixed in. Too 60's-ish for me with little complexity. Okay for some, I suppose. Leans masculine. Definitely not for me.

It’s smelling like a glass next day after drinking a 30 year old cognac. Wood barrel this is what is smell like.

I respect the quality of this fragrance, but it's just not for me, too aggressively green for my taste.

Definitely hangs from the tart green patchouli family tree. Essentially similar to Santa Maria Novella and also the Villoresi. It is a slightly less dank and sour sibling of Etro's Vetiver (I have the EDC), and therefore rings distant bells with Parfum D'Habit, Noir Patchouli, and 1740. In Etro's Patchouly, that mouthwatering green patchouli accord is even further collided and vaporized with a host of dusty herbs and un-hot spices. To me, that's the Etro-ism evident in many of this house's beautiful fragrances -- a proprietary blend of very fine aromatic dusts (not "powder!") that hang lazily off the scent. Here it's like a cloud of semisweet, delicious, herbal particles that the patchouli accord then flashes through like green lightning. To be honest, this would be my favourite of all the patchoulis if only it performed better. I can wipe, swipe, dab, spray, and re-spray the EDT with dedicated vigor and will be in heaven until the moment my mind is distracted to other business -- and then I remember that I should be smelling this on me, only to find it missing. Heartbreaker. A memory of itself. I have not smelled the EDP yet. And I must say I disagree that it is similar to Patchouli Magique. That one, despite a moist green opening, definitely hangs with the Nereides and Borneo and Horizon club of cocoa powder patches.

Wow, why is no one talking about this one? I must admit I have become extremely bored of patchouli ambers recently, every house pretty much releasing some variation of the chocolate cake patchouli of SL Borneo. Etro absolutely did their own thing with this one. Top note of wormwood, sweet, green, slightly boozy, slowly becoming a robust and dark patchouli core, densely woody, leafy, camphorous, earthy, embellishing with spice and fresh aromatic and floral facets until the warm base notes start reeling everything towards a more chocolatey dry down. Hefty, dense, but balanced, perhaps a bit intense for everyday wear, but probably the most satisfying iteration (aside from maybe Diptyque Tempo) for hardcore patchouli enthusiasts to enjoy. A top 3 patchouli scent for me personally.

@kain آرتمیسیا یا درمنه یک جنس گیاهی از خانواده ی گیاهی آستراسه یا کمپوزیته یا آفتابگردان هست. جزو جنس های گیاهی هست که پوشش وسیعی در ایران داره به طوری که گیاهشناس ها ایران رو فرشی میدونن که جنس این فرش از درمنه است و گل های این فرش از گون، احتمالا گیاه گون رو میشناسید. به هر ترتیب، درمنه در سرتاسر ایران پراکنده است و به کرات اون رو دیدید، مخصوصا در حاشیه و دورنمای جاده های کشور، اگر گیاهان کپه مانند متعددی دیدید، اون احتمال قریب چشم بسته میتونم بگم درمنه است. بوی بسیار تیزی داره، بطوریکه اگر در منطقه ای باشید که پوشش غالبش درمنه باشه لازم نیست از گیاه یه تیکه بکنید و بوش کنید. بوش سرتاسر فضا رو تسخیر کرده. من این عطر رو بو نکردم ولی میتونم تصور کنم چه حس و حال تیزی میتونه به عطر بده

I used to be a fan of patchouli so I blind bought this when it was on sale. It feels lighter than a lot of patchouli, and I can see it not being a favorite among die-hard patchouli fans, not dark enough, not damp cellar-like enough, not camphorous enough, and not bitter chocolatey and aged booze. But I love wearing it in the cool weater, lightly fresh aromatic and green bitter, translucent floral, it evokes a chilly rain-wet grey stone tablet in the backyard of an old church in a winter morning. It evokes the feeling of wanting passing the missing to someone in the distance.

I had L'Artisan Patchouli Patch, a great Patch but the Iris made it a bit to feminine for me. So I was looking for an alternative patchouli fragrance and blind bought this based on some great reviews, Colin Mailard, etc. I think Mailard was reviewing a vintage formulation. I prefer Patchouli Patch, better quality. This is a bright patchouli because of the mint, geranium, and citrus, which are nuances. Nothing special here, a good value if you can get it discounted for about $60/ 100ml. Rating: 7/10 God bless. John 3:16

This is the pure patchouli with a bit of sandalwood, and geranium. It's quite similar to: + "Rebel" by Antonio Visconti + "Geisha Noire" Aroma M + And almost identical to "Patchouli Precieux" by Les Nereides. If you are the one who loves the real patchouli note, then this will be the best for you, but since you are a patchouli lover, then i believe you will be having an identical other fragrances (other than the ones i mentioned above).

Alcoholic Green herbal note on opening... Something little bit fresh, but it goes away too fast. Then, it tames down, giving us something earthy and dirty that come from the patchouli and cypress. When drydown comes, we get still the patchouli, less intense, but with ambery notes. For patchouli lovers, i guess it could be a good one. But i am not... So what can i do?! Sillage and Longevity were very very nice on my skin :D

Tomorrow it`s my birthday, so I decided to make a present for myself. On me it`s patchouly+artemisia+ambra+sandal+musk, no orange, no vanilla at all. No sweetness. I love it! It`s already autumn here in Russia, so it makes me feel really comfortable to smell this warm perfume when it`s cold)) It`s expensive here, I payed around 100 euros for it but it`s worth it))) I`m totally happy))

A real, proper, good-and-dirty retro patchouli with a nice skin awareness that doesn't assault the people standing around you, a boho hobo with good social manners. When someone describes a person wearing patchouli, this is precisely the sort of composition I imagine, but with a receptive (friendlier) sillage. I find it splendid.

This is my favorite Patchouly fragrance. Of course I like Patchouli scents from L’Artisan, Lutens, and Montale, but this one is earthy and sharp, with an oriental vanilla bottom. Too spicy and woody, sensual and dark, thrilling and mysterious, animal and almost disturbing. You`ll enjoy this scent especially in autmn and winter!

Smoky, aromatic incense with slightly bitter notes. I was hoping for some of the vanilla to come out and smooth out on my skin, however the patchouli remains prominent throughout. It smells like a new age store. Very good lasting power. If you are after a quality lasting patchouli scent with a vintage feel, this is it.

REally love this stuff.I layer it under really boring scents.adds a lil spice.Make 1000s of perfumes xixing this with fumes u have.

It's very very similar to Santa Maria Novella Patchouli. If I didn't already have that I'd definitely be getting this.

Nice, it remids me a sort of a more subtle and mentholated version of L'instant de Guerlain Pour homme edp. Pleasant.

Tried it yesterday. Absolutely gorgeous. Pricey though...
