Animal Cafe

Extra Virgo è una casa di profumeria artistica indipendente con base a Firenze. Non è un brand mainstream e, a mio parere, nemmeno “nicchia” nel senso più comune: è qualcosa di più radicale. La produzione è a tiratura limitata, con un’impostazione quasi artigianale, e una forte predilezione per gli extrait de parfum, realizzati con materie prime di alta qualità. Non cercano di piacere, non inseguono trend né consenso. L’approccio è più diretto: costruiscono esperienze olfattive materiche, sensoriali, a tratti sperimentali. Il profumo, per loro, è una forma di espressione, quasi una dichiarazione. Per questo lavorano con contrasti, accordi anche volutamente crudi, non filtrati. ⸻ Animal Café è una fragranza unisex, orientale speziata e animalica. È un extrait ad alta concentrazione (intorno al 30%), con una durata molto importante (su di me supera tranquillamente le 12 ore). Apertura: caffè tostato – ma non il classico caffè gourmand. Qui è chicco, scuro, quasi bruciato, secco. La concentrazione è molto alta, cosa piuttosto rara, anche nella nicchia. Le origini richiamate sono Etiopia, Colombia e Indonesia. Cuore: chiodi di garofano e cannella. Le spezie scaldano, ma non addolciscono. Non danno comfort, danno movimento, vibrazione. Fondo: oud e civet (zibetto). Qui entra la parte più carnale, più sensuale, più “pelle”. Non è costruito con un semplice aroma di caffè: si sente proprio la materia, la tostatura, l’amaro. ⸻ Non è un profumo lineare e cambia molto in base alla pelle. * Su di me è magnetico, caldo, molto sensuale. * Su pelle secca tende a risultare più amaro e diretto. * Su pelle più calda e oleosa diventa più morbido, più animale, più avvolgente. * Sui tessuti resta più leggibile il caffè con il lato legnoso. La componente animalica (civet) reagisce molto al calore corporeo, al sebo e all’idratazione. Ed è proprio questo il punto: su qualcuno diventa pelle calda e affascinante, su altri può risultare troppo intenso, quasi disturbante. ⸻ La scia su di me è presente ma non invadente. Non è un profumo che “riempie la stanza”: è più intimo, più vicino alla pelle. Chi ti sta accanto lo percepisce davvero. Non è volutamente bilanciato in modo perfetto: il caffè resta protagonista, la base non lo arrotonda ma lo sostiene e gli dà carattere. È un profumo che, più che evolvere in modo classico, si deposita sulla pelle e si trasforma lentamente. Molti profumi moderni giocano su muschi puliti, ambroxan, vaniglia, accordi luminosi per risultare facili e piacevoli. Animal Café fa l’opposto: lascia esposti l’amaro del caffè, la ruvidità delle spezie, la densità dell’oud e il lato corporeo della civet. Se la pelle lo armonizza, viene fuori qualcosa di scuro, intimo, molto sofisticato. Se lo amplifica troppo, può diventare eccessivo. ⸻ Il flacone è minimale, lineare, con un bel tappo in marmo di Carrara. Il prezzo è alto (circa 270€ per 50 ml), ma coerente con il tipo di materie prime e con una produzione non industriale, a tiratura limitata.

Winter. Snow blankets the ground as you take a walk through the crisp, crunchy whiteness. The cold air stings your nose, begging for relief. Suddenly, warm roasted coffee and chocolate notes drift from your wool sweater, layered with a distinct animalic base note—reminiscent of a horse or camel’s fur. As you take a deeper sniff, there’s something almost unsettling at the end. It’s hard to decide whether it’s inviting or unpleasant. Personally, I love this divisive effect. It’s a warm, enveloping fragrance that seems to rise from the fluffiness of a wool sweater, evoking an enchanted winter night wrapped in a long, cozy coat. Those deep sniffs are addictive, revealing a slightly filthy side—if I dare say so. And I like that.

It was very smoky after the first applications. It reminded me even of an ashtray smell. However, I started to love it after some months as you can appreciate more nuances: the coffee provides an elegant twist, a waxy-textured civet makes it warm and a light spicy background acts as a bed on which these main ingredients mix together. It suits a well-dressed gentleman.

A coffee .... drug addict, as I keep sniffing my pulse. A beautiful blend of strong, smoky and roasted coffee with nutmeg, cinnamon, perhaps anise, caressed by a splendid texture of cocoa,tobacco,smoke and ash. Like the embers of a fireplace, but welcoming. On the foreshortening, there is always an animalic note of pony skin that mixes sweet and soft. Like a shiny black Friesian to whom you've just mounted a nice comfortable saddle and you added a pillow. Cheeky, rude,earthy, with a dirty and mean air in contrast to the soft and cozy gourmant steaming sweetness of the long drydown. An elegant, evening and greedy dessert for low temperatures. Ripe, masculine, tough and toasty.

Animal Café is a smoke-wrought beast. At first sniff, it transported me to the nostalgic realm of Slumberhouse’s *Jeke*. It is a fragrance with a brutal presence: dense, full-bodied, and almost suffocating in its intensity. It is made for cold days, when the air can sustain its overwhelming personality. The coffee emerges dark and powerful, mingling with the scent of hot tar, cigarette smoke, and a waxy, animalic civet note. It is as if my coffee had spilled into a bonfire. There is something about it that also evokes the daring spirit of BeauFort London: dark, smoky, and deeply elegant. Cacao fuses with various facets of the coffee, passing through tobacco filters gently sweetened by clove. The aroma of natural beans dominates the composition, revealing nuances of Colombian and Ethiopian coffees alongside intense Java Coffee Absolute. This is not a fragrance for beginners. It demands a certain olfactory background, patience, and a taste for the extreme. Masculine. Deep. Dark. A fragrance for a gentleman of quiet elegance—the kind who need not draw attention to be noticed. Image Imagine a dense, dark forest. Night has fallen. Atop a hill, a bonfire illuminates the pitch-black darkness while someone roasts coffee beans over the embers. Smoke rises slowly through the trees, carrying the scent of burnt wood, freshly roasted coffee, and damp earth. This is precisely the atmosphere that Animal Café embodies. 10/10

Like Sacred tobacco and Cacao Ritual, this is very raw and natural with a blend of spices, funk and the ingredient in their names. In this one, raw coffee beans is allready a sharp and dry smell so when mixed with cloves, civet, oud and cinnamon this is very much a dry and sharp smell that gets too nose piercing. Sacred tobacco has sandalwood and Cacao Ritual has jasmin and patchouli to tone down the dryness a bit, but Animal cafe is very much overbearing.

The very explicit animalic notes are always surprising at first, but within a few minutes they blend into a soft, smoky, chocolatey tone. It's a perfume that blurs the lines between very strong and charismatic accords, and this evolution is a pleasant experience to smell. I detect something slightly herbal, almost bitter in the background, like dry straw that gives a respite from the animalistic and spicy warmth.

The aroma of natural, concentrated, spicy, resinous coffee with a charred, woody scent that evokes the smell of an animal saddle.
