A Rose For...

**The perfect perfume for a strong, dominant woman** As I man, I have to say that if a woman wants to let men around her know that she is strong, able to take charge in the workplace, and hold her own on a date, this perfume is perfect. It seems so tailor made for such women in fact, that despite it being called a unisex scent, I wouldn't suggest this for anyone other than a woman of this type. The heavier red rose, tuberose and orris provide a feminine aspect on women, without being too dainty or softly floral, and the woods and spices underlying give a dominant, traditionally 'masculine' tone that lends itself to women in a way that is both executive in a work setting, yet also seductive and feisty in the evenings. I have many female friends who could be described as strong, independent, dominant women who really don't take any shit, who can hold their own against dominant men, walk all over soft men, and yet are girly in their own way. When they ask for recommendations I've suggested this and they love it. Caution: It'll wear the woman if she's not this type of girl.

This is a slightly sweeter version distant cousin of Estee Lauder Desert Eden. Very incense heavy. The black tea gives a refreshing quality to the heavy woodiness and incense of the bouquet. The vanilla is just the right touch, never cloyingly sweet just enough to round out and soften any rough edges. The incense here gives almost a cinnamon like quality and I but wonder if there is cinnamon added here. It sure smells like cinnamon to me maybe they lied to get past IFRA dirty regs. The rose is here but more of a dark red bouquet that is surrounded by church incense, aromatic woods, darkly brewed tea, and cinnamon sticks. I do get a far off animalic quality that I don't know if it comes from the tuberose or the oud or both but it is distant, you need to "look" for it to make it out. So glad I bought this unisex by today's standards but this baby is all mine. My husband will love this on me. A beauty. Regal.

A pretty and fresh honey-oud and rose with black tea. Without looking at the notes I picked out the tea easily. There's nothing to compare this to, as I've never smelled a rose oud scent quite like this one. The rose is elegant; very English and a bit serious, not at all soapy but deep and a bit spicy. While it smells nothing like POAL, for a fragrance of a similar note composition it has a quiet elegance and warmth to it. Like an embrace from someone you love who's wearing a rose and tea fragrance. I appreciate the fact there are no fruit notes sharpening the edges of this soft, honeyed, rounded oud rose fragrance. Suitable for formal occasions -- such as a winter wedding or black tie holiday party. 🥀😶🌫️😌

This is very interesting. On me it smells like incense, flowers, vanilla and clean laundry. I was afraid the incense and oud combination would make it too heavy but that wasn't the case. It smells familiar, kind of like baby wipes (in a good way). Ive had it on for 8 hours and I still smell it, although it has turned into a skin scent for quite some time now. Ive heard it being compared to jo malone velvet rose & oud but I don't find them that similar. The Jo malone is smells more jammy and the oud is stronger.

This starts off with a dark spicy rose and mellows to a dark rose with black tea after a few minutes. It’s very warm, very beautiful, very unisex. The rose here is perfect for cool weather. I’ve been sampling a lot of rose scents lately (I have about 50 niche rose samples I’m working on), and I have already ordered a bottle of this perfume. I think it’s one of the more memorable roses out of what I’ve sampled this far!

tea spicy rose.... I get that spicy dark mildly sweet rose with doses of wood. It has tea, patchouli, touch of orris, cedar, incense, and some amber. It's more of a balsamic spicy rose and woods than rose oud. Nice. Edit (14 March 2025) I don't get the tea! i guess it is the incense and maybe the tea (if there is any) then it's the black tea, and i get cumin doses and bits of ginger. Amusing licious spicy rose.

This is the first perfume I've tried since taking a short 2 month hiatus away from fragrance, and it's a great one to bring me back. A wonderful oudy rose, the ideal sort. Not synthetic, not overwhelming or too strong. Warm, comforting, and just slightly exotic enough to peak and maintain an aura of interest and intrigue. Very well rounded, subtle and sexy. Stellar. 8/10

I’m a huge fan of Floris fragrances and in my opinion, they really outdid themselves with this one! It is one spicy, magnificent rose fragrance! The tea, notes, the incense, and Floris’ Oud make this a very sexy fragrance, but not over the top. You can wear this anywhere in my opinion, and people will respond to it!

This is just absolutely amazing. I know it's marketed as smelling differently on each person, and I believe that's true. On me, a warm, rich, darkly sexy smell came right along with the rose, the incense weaving a spell around the rose, amber, sandalwood, and oud. The scent of a temple to Aphrodite. I love it!

It always surprises me that this fragrance gets so many negative reviews. I think it’s wonderful. The rose is prominent (as it should be) on a warm backdrop of amber, woods, and incense. To me, everything is perfectly balanced to allow the rose to be the star of the show, while the other notes remain clear and not muddled but never try to outshine the rose. It captures my interest and attention, but it doesn’t challenge me. I am not the most experienced with oud, but I do not detect anything dirty or “barnyard” in the composition. In addition to being a rose fragrance that I enjoy very much, it has excellent longevity. In fact, it stays on all day, so that may be more than you want, but if you need something to stick with you... here ya go. Also, although this may not be the most daring fragrance I’ve ever encountered, it definitely does not smell like a designer fragrance. (No disrespect to designer, I have plenty of those) I’m just stating that this is not a scent that I have encountered over and over. So all in all, I give this probably an 8/10. Fb worthy to me, but I still have my travel size so it will be a while.

Floris A Rose For... is a sophisticated, earthy interpretation of rose that leans far away from the bright, dewy florals many people expect. The rose is deep and textured, while the tea accord introduces a refined dryness that adds complexity and elegance. While the composition is beautifully crafted, it won’t be universally appealing. The tea and earthier facets create a slightly austere character that can become overwhelming if oversprayed. For that reason, I prefer a lighter application, allowing it to remain close to the skin where its nuances are easier to appreciate. My favorite way to wear it is layered with Narciso Rodriguez Musc Noir Rose. The softer, sweeter rose and musk smooth some of the fragrance’s sharper edges, creating a seamless transition into a sensual musky drydown. Together, they strike a balance between sophistication and intimacy that neither fragrance achieves quite as well on its own.

The water-down, amputated version of Portrait of a Lady Surprisingly, the note pyramid is right: the incense only appears at the beginning. Darjeeling(??) sprinkled salt and pepper on top, then it moves toward a "white-green" side of cool-tone piney olibanum. The "white-green" note has lit the way for rose. At first, both soft floral petals and the astringent green calyxs open under my nose. The indole is soft, not heady. I also sense a faint citrus hard candy+soapy hint hidden behind. The florals soon settle down to a sour-sweet jammy rose, and this is the moment which reminds me Portrait of the Lady the most. Of course, this is a toned down version. The patchouli barely reveals itself, only disguised as a slightly woodier, puckery part of the rose. From this stage, the perfume doesn't change much, it just fades away.

When I tried this on paper I was not very impressed, but on skin this is really nice! Despite the name, this doesn't start out with prominent rose. To me it starts out as a general floral with a bit of greenness. The rose doesn't come in for about 10 minutes after spraying it on. Along with the rose I get incense, oud, and patchouli--so it's a very familiar DNA. This becomes slightly powdery and the dry down is a wonderful powdery musk with vanilla nuances. It actually has a bit of a gourmand feel in the dry down. This is fairly soft (definitely not a beast mode fragrance). It's a rose-oud-patchouli so definitely a familiar scent, but I think this can stand on its own apart from others in this genre. In my opinion this is unisex, even leaning slightly masculine at some points.

A lovely oud rose fragrance that has an overall soft quality. I pick up the incense note at the opening and it is part of a cacophony of notes that seem to be fist-fighting each other for dominance. The opening is not pleasant and should not be used to judge the overall experience of this fragrance. Once it settles on my skin it becomes a jammy rose oud scent. The oud is subtle and I doubt an oud lover would be satisfied with this fragrance. The drydown is very nice and definitely feminine in my POV. The only disappointment is that this fragrance is basically a skin scent within 5-10 mins. A lovely skin scent, but not worth the price.

I like it, even though I'm not a rose person. It's not too much of anything, it's very well blended. To me, this is a "woody rose". Not at all your typical, overdone rose-oud combo. The oud here is very minimal, and smells woody rather than oud-y, if that makes any sense. The rose is fresh, not sweet and syrupy. The scent itself is on the dry side; not much sweetness here. A perfume to be enjoyed by someone with a good taste. The fragheads who are into avant-garde, unconventional and edgy perfumes will probably find it boring lol

really nice traditional dark rose smell. good sillage and longevity, but its a traditional smell (a little bit old lady, i won't lie) so you won't really have people commenting on it. personally i think using this fragrance as a supporting actor is the way to go, aka layering it with a different fragrance that's gonna be the star of the show.

Really well done rose, like really well done!! This one surprised me on how easy it is to wear, fresh and refined rose (but not feminine) with touches of woody notes throughout. Its very natural smelling and incredibly well blended. This one took me by surprise, check this one out!! This is rose done right!

This is a pleasant surprise. It’s very well blended and as a result the dominant notes change frequently. I do smell rose, but also a strong green note, tea and incense. Much better than I thought it would be.

I was offered a sample of this fragrance through a fragrance sampler site I subscribed to. Was excited to try it and while not disappointed, FWIW there is nothing extremely unique or outstanding about A Rose For You by Floris. A Rose For You by Flores is a very safe, slightly earth primary rose fragrance with a diminutive & small incense note in the background. The rose note in this fragrance is not an old, dried, or mature rose, nor is the rose young and dewy. And certainly, A Rose For You is not an earthy, gritty, dark, gothic rose fragrance either. To my nose, the rose notes in this fragrance smell fresh, similar to a rose that's been in a vase for a day, or two. And that's about it. Very slightly salty, slightly aquatic. This scent sits quite close to the skin and longevity is good at about 6 hours. So, while nice enough, A Rose For You by Flores is not a fragrance I would wear on any regular basis. The current niche market is flooded with incense-rose fragrances. IMHO, there is nothing outstanding, special, or unique about this perfume. A pretty scent that's just above average.

I came home with 7 Floris samples including A Rose For... from Neiman Marcus last week and I can't say I really like any of them. They're all too understated and flat to me. Nothing really memorable or exciting to report on any of them. They're all pleasant enough and not offensive in any way but just sort of dull and certainly not worth the retail prices. They're also very feminine with only a few leaning unisex.

Very disappointing. Mercifully I waited until someone was selling individual bottles in the mini bottle set Floris brought out at maybe $275 for Christmas awhile ago (2 years ago?) so at least I'm not disappointed and also out of a lot of money. As another reviewer said, this rose of Floris' absolutely isn't a modern rose. And I say it's also not what you think you're going to get with all the notes they list. Not a middle eastern market rose/oud/patchouli bomb, and don't dream it's going to be a rosy version of Leather Oud or even Floris Patchouli. It comes on all incense-y in the first 3 minutes and even tries to be sparkling, but very quickly becomes a muddied rose scent. One that is very much like their 2000 rose scent, China Rose, which also greatly disappointed me and I don't think lasted more than 5 years at the very most in Floris stores. The notes they listed for each fragrances are substantially different, but the overall vibe is exactly the same. I guess Floris thought they'd try it again, or the people responsible for China Rose have been gone from Floris so long no one remembers now how badly it sold. And I know some people liked China Rose and could be clamoring for it again, for all I know, and/or ordered it as a special edition. Several years ago, and maybe still now, Floris would make up a special scent for the buyer at something like the UK equivalent of $2000. I'm pretty sure that's how A Rose For started its life. In the 1950's Floris made a Red Rose that women in that era liked, but one that would be too old school now to make it through product development. More recently they've continued to make Rose Geranium, which could almost pass for a barbershop scent and therefore maybe more saleable if they added a real patchouli/oud vibe to it. So Floris knows how to make a good rose scent, but it just doesn't do it.

This is not it. No. No. No. Very sharp. Barely any rose. No incense. Just sharp and sour. Like a cheap mens cologne. It's probably my skin chemistry, but this just smells awful on me.

The combination of rose, incense, and patchouli made this too heavy for me.

Blah. Bought it out of curiousity for the tea note and based on other rose perfumes like Toy Boy this could very well have been a good fit. But I simply don't like this at all. This is not a tea fragrance at all, it's more OUD than anything. And I am truly starting to detest oud as a fragrance note. It basically dominates every fragrance with that loud skankiness, except for maybe Dunhill Icon (but they could have dropped the oud in that one too wouldn't miss it). So back to this perfume, there is no concernable difference between this and old lady perfume, there is nothing masculine about it. What's the point of saying unisex, all fragrances can be unisex, makes no sense. Unisex to me should be very neutral and fresh, being wearable for anyone like CK One or the likes. This is sickly sweet with no redeeming qualities. To be real, this smells like that old obnoxious lady on the bus with eccentric and loud clothing. That person who goes over the top and too far with everything. Awful.

I got a sample of this and I wanted to love it, but on me this perfume is a menace. One spritz and I was overwhelmed. Couldn't get it off, and the smell lingered on my skin and in my room for HOURS. Too much incense, so it smelled like an awful musty, sweaty, powdery old rose. After a while, it settled into tuberose, patchouli, and mildew. I wish I knew why this was so awful for me! Gave me a headache, too. I am so bummed that this was such a failure.

While I like this enough to have bought a bottle, I disagree with Floris that it is a *modern* floral oriental. It seems to me to be firmly rooted in the middle-eastern tradition of rose-oudh perfumes and reminds me very much of Jo Malone's Velvet Rose & Oudh, although I prefer this. I investigated Velvet Rose after smelling it when a member of my gym used to spritz it after a work-ou. It smelled lovely on her but a bit synthetic on me, whereas A Rose For ... smelss very natural, as bint Tapputi says. I agree with Birnam Wood that there is a touch of Portrait of a Lady about this and think it comes from a faint whiff of cigarette smoke. That might sound off-putting but it works in this perfume at least as well as it does in POAL. I like the top notes but also enjoy the dry down when, as Flawnt says, you get a woody, musky skinscent. I ordered this from Floris and it was delivered with a gold pen - gold as in the ink was gold rather than the pen itself - so that I could write my own name on the label after A Rose For ... in an ink that matched Floris's font colour. If you are buying this as a gift for someone, there are 3 places on the packaging and bottle where you can write the name of your giftee. Rather a nice touch, I thought, and Floris can certainly afford to throw the pen in at this price!

"A Rose For..." with its anonymous unspecified referent is not what you'd expect. Marketing gimmick: the box contains a gold-ink pen so you can customize the label and put anyone's name on there. I have White Rose and it's one of my favourites for the specificity of rosiness it evokes, namely a white rose's particular combination of creamy, sweet, and clean powdery nuances that seem to align in the same way each time. Perhaps that's the oddness of this "A Rose For ..." fragrance. It contains several notes that are often more atmospheric to me - tea, oud, incense, wood, amber - and any one or several might stand out more based on what one's synapses already recognize. Frankly, it smells different every time I wear it and very different and a lot more complex an interesting on a paper strip or cloth. My mind keeps changing but I have to conclude that it's more of a neutral mood scent, not a rose. The rose that's in there, as much as my nose is able to pick it out, is a dark but dry rose, wine-like, and so subtle as to be barely a supporting note. I've used a layer of rose absolute to see if that helps and it does, but again: it's an intriguing scent but more like a mood-ring array of pleasant warm notes than a rose for anyone.

This is good but not $235 good. It's too much like other scents that don't cost as much. I will spend $235 if I love something and there is nothing else close to it, but this one makes me think of too many other similar scents. A Rose For...reminds me quite a bit of the David Yurman Limited Edition released in 2011, except that one is stronger and lacks the tea note. I enjoy the black tea note in A Rose For.... It gives it a little medicinal twang. In the David Yurman the saffron gives the medicinal feel, so there is a structural similarity. A Rose For...is gorgeous, to be sure, but if you already have a good rose/oud amber scent, it's redundant. Also, this reminds me of Serge Lutens Sa Majeste la Rose, just not as choking. Nothing like Portrait of a Lady. That one is much more complex. Also I don't like the name because it makes me think of that William Faulkner story A Rose for Emily about the weird reclusive lady who slept next to a corpse. The name creeps me out.

This is one of the nicer rose interpretations. I've had issues with loud, plasticky, dominant rose notes in scents before, but this one is so well controlled, reserved and blended that it's much more palatable. Understated, in keeping with the Floris house style (except for Neroli Voyage and Leather Oud). And also a (too) modest performer as is generally typical of Floris. Its a soft, powdery rose. And a powdery rose reads "feminine" to my nose, so even though this, like Portrait of a Lady, can be worn by a man, it suits a woman more naturally. The comparisons to Portrait of a Lady only go so far. This is actually quite different than POAL, with A Rose For... understated softness, powderiness, and blend. And it seems the presentation of A Rose For... is feminine-leaning. So this may be a gift to a lady friend, I doubt I'll use a full bottle.

Looking at the notes was bracing myself for a portrait of a lady experience. But to me this is nothing like it. POAL has a much more gothic, thick vibe to it, in that it is heavier on the incense and patch / resin notes. This seems almost airy in comparison, almost soapy too. A much tamer, more feminine, creamier everyday wearable experience. The tea and tuberose may also have something to do with it. I really like it, has a touch of arabic to it, (probably the oud which is fairly subtle but gives it that lady in a burka feel, only softly) overall great perfume as always from Floris. Could be interpreted as a green rose too, but not in the vegetal floral stem kind of way, more in an airy tea fresh rose kind of way (with ample sweetness!) Second spraying - getting a real candy vibe. A sophisticated cherry lifesaver / jolly rancher vibe.

This is a very well rounded, pretty perfume. It's a sweet, jammy, incense-y rose oud. I wouldn't say that it is exactly original, but it is standout. It's not a potent, smelling in your neighbor's cubicle rose-oud combination, which as someone who absolutely loves rose-oud, I appreciate. It's friendly. A Rose For... starts out as a realistic rose and then fades down to a skinscent pretty quickly. At first the skinscent is a sweet jammy rose, but it quickly fades down to a woody, musky skinscent that stays on the skin. Scent: 9/10 Longevity: 8/10 Overall: 8.5/10

This is Oud Palaos nicer little sibling. Not nearly as hardcore but nevertheless a very nice scent. Opens up pretty straight with rose and black tea. A combo I didn’t really love at first sight but that I’ve grown into as I’ve used ip my decant. The incense here isn’t rough nor is the incense. Rather it gives a kind of cola-ish vibe paired with vanilla, amber and a little bit of patchouly. I see this as a bit of Roja Enigma albeit less dark and less powerful with a lot more rose. Good stuff no doubt. Might have to get me a bottle of this!

This fragrance plays tricks with your head. Different experience each time, The first time I’ve smelled it the strongest part was the clove like spice. The day after the powdery iris is more front (think of Dior Homme), an hour later I’m smelling more tea. Another time it’s strong florals which are on the feminine side for me. Lasts very long (all day on my skin), intimate fragrance tho, was too feminine for me.

pretty, mature, slightly musky and bitter rose with a strong, smoky incense note. a bit of oud is noticeable in the background, and it all lays on a nice backdrop of amber. a little bit of patchouli aswell. i love incense & smoky notes, so i love this a lot, and i would buy a full bottle of it.

On paper: Metallic rose and amber, hints of charred oud incense but also a light soapiness. Whispers of citrus peel, both airy, sweet and slightly bitter. On skin: Almost the exact same but with a clove-like spiciness being present as well as a slightly dirty castoreum.

got a sample of this with another floris purchase. it’s pleasant enough until the drydown, which is a touch too masculine (woody, smoky) for me. the cedar and oud take me right on out. 😩

I only have and probably ever only have a sample but I LOVE this. It's a satin and velvet dream. bintTapputi expresses what I wish to let anyone know about this perfume. It's stellar....

Gorgeous deep incense composition where the rose manages to be still fresh and dewy. Deep wine red velvety rose, incense + tea is really unique and both fresh smoky.
