Santal

Love love love it. Natural, soft, dry, creamy, slightly smoky sandalwood with hints of citrus and musk. Very versatile, very classy. Not loud or synthetic, just a perfect understated woody scent but with surprisingly decent projection and longevity given the soft feel of it. Not spicy like GFT Sandalwood, much more ethereal and dry. Similar sandalwood to Santal 33 but without the overdone hipster vibes and quirks of that frag...not similar but a similar sandalwood vibe. Love it. Scent: 9 / Sillage: 7 / Longevity: 7 ================================= UPDATE (8/3/2022): Comparing the Tam Dao EDT to Fragonard Santal, 2 dry, pure, woody, all season Sandalwood scents. Tam Dao EDT feels more like I've got my nose right up against a freshly cut chips of sandalwood. It's got that fresh fresh cut sandalwood I get when I'm chopping wood. Super high quality. The Fragonard Santal EDT is similarly dry and realistic sandalwood but doesn't have that fresh cut wood vibe. It's more of a fragrance than actual fresh sandalwood chip vibes that Tam Dao has...but that's only in direct comparison. Compared to most other sandalwood scents, it is much more of the real thing, rather than a perfume composition which is obvious in Egoiste, GFT Sandalwood, etc. Both are lovely and probably my favorites Sandalwood scents. Fragonard might be better for summers (which it's perfectly suited for), Tam Dao a bit better for fall. Really hard to choose between the two. Based on price, I'd more liberally spray Fragonard Santal ($75 for 200ml), but I'd definitely want both in my collection.

I bought this fragrance at the Fragonard factory shop in Grasse, France, some 4 years ago. What a wonderful eau de toilette this is. I loved it at first smell in the very nice perfume shop where the Fragonard fragrances floated thickly through the air. What a great experience this was at the Fragonard headquarters in the worldcapital of perfumes. Now a few years later I have a quarter bottle left. The fragrance developed well and it still smells great. The opening is a lovely woody citrus. Not to sweet but very attractive and calming. The dry down is woody and musky and the herbs from the Provence (I smell Rosemary and Thyme), gives this fragrance that typical comforting Southern French character. It's just lovely and completely unisex. The performance is more than I expected from an eau de toilette. The price is descent, a steal for this kind of quality. When this bottle is empty I would love to return to Grasse. Or I buy one on the internet. Fragonard is an affordable beaken of quality in the huge world of perfumery.

Extremely pleasant, soft, and unisex. A few years ago, I found a white, silk blend, Dior mens button down for a steal in a thrift shop - to me, this is the scent version of wearing that shirt. It’s linear, but for some reason the trail is very herbal, while sniffing closer to the skin is warm and creamy. Maybe it’s just that my nose is picking up the rosemary as a separate, familiar note? The sandalwood is incredible, and there’s also an undertone of clean soapy musk that I adore. It leaves a wonderful day-after smell on clothes! I got this to wear to work events, and it’s perfect. It’s definitely a safe blind buy if you like the notes. Edit to say that on me (a woman) I don’t find it to be sexy at all - more of a clean, warm, work-safe scent. On my male partner however, it’s super sexy. Totally drool-worthy. Not sure if it’s a chemistry thing or what, but he’s allowed to spray my bottle as much as he wants!

I had about 40 different samples and decants shipped to me a few months ago, and this one didn’t win me over instantly. I split the samples into absolutely disgusting ones, and ones I would like to revisit, and Santal made the cut into the second list. About a month ago, I reached for the sample again, and lo and behold. I couldn’t stop sniffing at it! It’s woody, fresh and creamy, unisex and leans just a little bit sweet on my skin. It lingers on but isn’t obnoxious. After finishing my sample, I ordered the full bottle. I can’t get enough of it. Edit: After using it for months every other day, it still manages to make me smile. It's worth getting your hands on.

I LOVE this. Apart for the first minute or so right after spraying, where it smells like gin&tonic (that I love but don't want to smell like) the fresh spicy vibes aren't my thing but luckily this fades very quickly. Perfectly unisex. The vibe it gives is: you are the only person in the room that is wearing a white t-shirt and jeans (both good quality and well fitted), everybody else is wearing colorful trendy sweatpant-y gucci-esque outfits. Apart from the first few minutes, it seems quite linear from then onwards, which I personally have no issues with at all.

I bought this yesterday and it’s so beautiful. It’s hard to say but for me is an improved formula of TamDao by Diptyque. While (for me) TD is more about the cedar than the sandalwood, that pencil shave smell, this is creamier, fresher and performs better, altough it’s a light (but airy) scent. Those around you will notice it. For those who don’t know tam dao, Santal by Fragonard smells of clear clean wood, along with clean and fresh note, a bit green, a bit flowery but the central note is a milky clean wood.

Just scored a full bottle from someone who bought it at an estate sale. I’m sorry other bidder on eBay. When this was discontinued, a piece of my soul left with it when I saw how little I had left. No longer. I will love and cherish this new bottle. About the fragrance itself: the best, smoothest, creamiest and freshest sandalwood I’ve ever smelled. You think it’s gone away, but then people start telling you how good you smell.

Completely agree with gambleriver, this is definitely very very similar to Tam Dao. Tam Dao I feel is a little bit drier, and Santal lacks the tinge of rosiness that Tam Dao has, but it's the same clean, beautiful sandalwood scent, light with myrtle and cypress. It's a wonderful every day smell for wood lovers, really versatile. Only owning Tam Dao stopped me from nabbing a bottle right there and then.

This is an excellent replacement for Tam Dao that lasts longer and is much cheaper. Unfortunately, Fragonard has stopped production for this scent (according to their website) so I’d recommend stocking up now before it becomes an Ebay exclusive. For the perfume itself, light creamy woods with an herbal and slightly piney undercurrent. I love it and really might just order a 200 ml backup bottle.

The only fragrance that I have been stopped and asked to write it down, because he wanted it for his wife , I have about 100 fragrances and this is the one that get the most compliments, its woody fresh and clean, to me it smells like clean fresh skin someone that using amazing shower and body products, has freshly washed and ioned clothes, men and women both seem to love this !!

Woodsy and floral. Extremely long lasting on me, with perfect sillage. Sampled and purchased at Fragonard in France. I never wear it in cold weather and in the summer, it's one of the few scents that has elicited a "you smell so good!" from a woman (most recently my dental hygienist who happened to walk closely past me). She made me write down the name to recommend to her husband

This is a little gem and I hope Fragonard will bring Santal back. I also have their Santal Cardamome, both are very well done. Santal feels absolutely suitable for me, a young woman - creamy sandalwood, soft, with a touch of other notes, well blended. Warming in winter, but also suitable for other seasons - I felt like wearing it now, and it's almost June.

Very good in its way : lemon and fresh herbs turning sweet and woody. The sandalwood is simple, milky, linear. Reliable. As I like this kind of sweet citrusy fragrances, grounded by something smooth, it’s a bottle I can pick easily. It’s very confortable, clean (but not soapy) with an unisex vibe and can’t ever be a mistake in any situation.

Get this while you can...50% off on Fragonard website, which officially says it's discontinued and will be gone once existing stock sells out. It's a creamy, elegant, ethereal, natural smelling sandalwood. Extraordinary value, but would be more than worth it at niche prices. I bought 3 of the 200ml bottles to stock up.

Such a beautiful blend... it's a soft woodsy fresh scent. It's your skin with the skin of mother nature combined. Totally unisex (for those who care ^^). Love this very much ! They also have changed the bottle and the new ones are very classy.

The opening of Fragonard Santal feels quite alcoholic and sharp, but once calmed down, it's a milky floral sandalwood with a light touch of citrus. With time, the sandalwood leans a bit doughy, but it stays clean and bright thanks to the strong presence of myrtle and other aromatic herbs. The sillage of Santal is moderate to soft, and the longevity is around 9 hours. As a sandalwood fragrance, there are probably other more impressive interpretations on the market. But if you happen to be interested in a fresh, bright, everyday sandalwood fragrance, Fragonard Santal being an affordable option, is well worth a try.

Got this as a gift a few years ago, but really enjoyed and decided to keep it. To me it's an easy eau de toilette, easy to wear, easy to please, and extremely reliable. Definitely a unisex scent in my opinion: its milky smoothness, as well as the musk and citrus balance out the sandalwood that is so typically masculine, making it a little more feminine but also just more subtle than many of the sandalwoods out there. I see it as a casual-chic scent: perfect for every day wear, or any casual occasion, in a way that elevates your presence without being overly dramatic.

I subjectively think it's masculine scent. I wore it few times, used a sample, and everytime i thought it's not for me, i don't find it as for women. Kind of fresh and herbal and woody.

Tried it twice on skin, spraying generously. I'm unable to write a review, as I could barely smell it. I suggest you try by yourself next time you visit Paris or have a flight connection, since Fragonard is now available in airports duty free stores in France.

The one I sampled came in an aluminum type bottle so I'm not sure if it's the same one. Anyway, what I sampled was somewhat similar to A*Men but without the tar. I don't think there is a coffee note here but perhaps there is a touch of tobacco that replaces it, or some strong florals (of the "blossom" type). It's quite pleasant, to be sure, but I can't say that I would choose it over A*Men, Intoxication, Play Intense, etc., though I look forward to figuring that out. If there is sandalwood in here, it's quite mild, but there is no animalic or "synthetic" element either. I have no idea what it sold for when it was released, but my guess is that it was quite a bargain at the time (I've only seen that aluminum bottle on a Russian site, saying it was a 2006 release, and I'm guessing it was discontinued).

I love sandalwood, but here I had no great expections to find a creamy Mysore Sandalwood and I actually didn't. It's more of a soli-wood of a very woody sandalwood, if it makes sense. It's a watered down Tam Dao (new) with a clean nature, unisex and not above the lines. It smells like those old Chinese soaps that came in Santal, Rose and Jasmin. Not bad, but nothing fantastic.

I get the sandalwood and musk from the get go. It’s a nice scent but leans feminine to me which is odd as the reviewer below thinks it’s more masculine! It’s well blended and quality is top notch as I find Fragonard to be. I will give this a few more wearings but I don't think this will beat “Patchouli” from the line.

I just tried delightfully delicate and sweet Figuier from Fragonard, looked at their website...and, yes, Santal is back. With, pretty much, the same notes. As a huge Tam Dao fan, I'm looking forward trying it. Figuier is great alternative for Philosykos, more bright and floral, if that makes any sense.

In it's current formulation Fragonard's Santal seems essentially a well executed Tam Dao clone. It's more subdued and lacks in some of the Diptyque's depth, but at between 1/2 to 1/3 the price (depending on point of purchase) I wouldn't hesitate recommending this as a blind buy to any Tam Dao fan.

A lovely, inexpensive scent--soft herbs and luscious (Australian) sandalwood--that has the ability to simultaneously project wildly and stay close to the skin. The sillage is extraordinary on it, too. Better still, smell the shirt you wore when wearing Santal one week later--amazing!

Smells like expensive soap. For only 33 ingredients it smells quite complicated. Well worth it's notoriety. Delicious.
