Feu Follet

A beautiful, complex, very individual scent - it's not loud or jarring in any dimension, but subtly intriguing and goes its own way, without yelling "look at me, I'm so niche!". It's discreet and classy, not wacky and experimental. If it were clothes, it would be something simple and structured, in quality natural materials, from say Armani or Jil Sander (*I know nothing about those labels' perfumes, so this is a comparison of the sort of personality the scent has, not saying that Feu Follet resembles Armani or Sander perfumes specifically). I get a huge blast of lovely, fresh ginger (not crystallised sweet ginger, or dry powdered ginger spice, but the fresh, almost lemony smell of a ginger root being sliced into), gentle notes of cinnamon and maybe a tiny bit of clove at first, then enriched with notes of green grass and hay and all sorts of beautifully aromatic woods. Lots of sandalwood in there for sure, and a gentle underlying leather helping it to last longer, without bullying everything else off stage. The balance is masterful. It's warm and sweet, but not cloying; it smells beautifully natural and never, ever, overdone or overpowering. This skews slightly feminine but a man could easily wear it. Sillage is very, very muted; longevity is mixed - its power seems to slump after 2-4 hours on me, but it's still very definitely there on skin after 5-6 hours todal. edited to add: wearing it a lot these days and liking it more each time, because its freshness means it's a rare spicy thing that doesn't overwhelm even on hot days. BUT that longevity is a real problem - I fall in love with the first spray every time, and every time get irritated by how weak it's got within just a few hours. Edited again to add: thanks to Fragrantica member corkscrewcurly I got to smell some Serge Lutens Five o'clock au Gingembre, and realised this stuff overlaps a fair bit with that one - but Feu Follet is more adult, more outdoorsy and less sweet, (that fresh vs powdered ginger again) and with much more wood.
