Luna Roja

In a recent interview, I was asked if there an ingredient I feel particularly connected to at the moment. I chose Damascones and Damascenones—these are rose ketones that are volatile constituents in several different essential oils, including rose. In particular, I am really connected to β-damascenone (rose, honey, tobacco, apple, dried fruit). It turns out that β-damascenone is the main aromatic component in red wines and in Kentucky bourbon. Luna Roja from Fueguia 1833 is β-damascenone heaven for me. It smells like a deep rose red wine or a wine-scented deep red rose all at once to me, perhaps even have a whole cellar of the former or entire garden of the latter. Some moments I am reminded of a dry Bordeaux, others, like a mouthwatering port. It's an intimate occasion at a vineyard at dusk, with wine and roses, and an indulgent, custardy Far Breton with dried prunes, saturated with rum. There are whiffs of oak casks on the grounds and fresh mown hay in the distance. It envelops me with its velvet texture, and is it eases, suggestions of clove, black pepper and vanilla come into relief, recalling a mulled libation. I look forward to wearing this again on a cool autumn evening. It is thus far the most satisfying of scents that evoke the experience of red wine, avoiding harsh and acidic facets that often accompany such an accord in perfume. I am fascinated that it seems to push the aforementioned rose ketones to the limit of what is allowed, or that there is some clever alchemy at play here, but whatever the case, it earns my seal of approval.

Fueguia doesn't offer samples and I haven't found a decanter for them, so this was a blind buy. It smells sensual, a little like standing in a vineyard, and pleasantly sweet. The fragrance is very authentic and juicy, but it doesn't last more than 2 or 3 hours and the sillage is limited (typical for non-synthetic materials). Given the steep cost, maybe it's not the best for value. However, I've not smelled anything quite like it and I want to keep smelling it. It's so well crafted but still natural and wild. When I wear it, I feel like I'm standing on a terrace facing a lush vineyard in the moonlight in a silk red dress waiting for a secret lover.

It definitely smells like a wine barrel or the oak cork from a wine bottle. Very elegant, love it.

It’s sweet and boozy. A little peppery. Like a nightcap of old fashioned. Vinyl’s older and more sophisticated cousin. None of the actual notes are pulling through all the way, kind of just melted together. I’m getting something almost peppery underneath but not quite. A warm spice like bitters or mulled wine. Not a whole lot of sillage, one of those subtle skin scents perfect for an intimate moment.

A very sweet fruity yet balanced blend reminiscing of wine, having a deep plum base with sharp yet not overwhelming alcoholic and metallic notes, somewhat resembling the bitterness of concentrated grapes. Overall oak and hay play into the illusion of deep rich sweetness without being too detectable, and vanilla with rose creates that beautiful fruity feel. Hands down one of the best creations by Fueguia, not relying on expensive ingredients, but rather on skillful blending. None of the real notes are too obvious, giving the perfect illusion of wine.
