Matchabuya

I was one of the lucky ones who snatched a bottle during the limited online sale. This is beautiful! I don’t like blind buying but I love tea scents and figured, if this is sold in the Tokyo flagship store, it can’t be too strong. And indeed! It’s so fresh and delicate. There’s citrus, tea and a soft sweetness. The dry down is woody but very very delicate. It’s perfectly unisex too. So imagine a hot humid day in the summer, and you want to feel refreshed but in a way that won’t bother anyone in the Tokyo metro. This is it. Where as Angel Dust turns stronger the longer I wear it, this stays close to the skin. Closest comparison I have from Fugazzi is the limited edition Iso E Fig. The musk is soft, not soapy. The cedar is not detectable at all, ( no Orpheon or Cedrus vibes) but instead perfectly blended into the base. Also no fishy smell from the seaweed. More like you are looking at the sea while sipping your matcha. Love love love.

This is probably the most realistic yet incredibly wearable matcha tea fragrance in niche perfumery that I’ve tried. At the opening, I smell freshly ground matcha powder ,slightly herbal, with a gentle bitterness, yet not rough or “vegetal” at all, as matcha accords sometimes can be. Here the tea feels very soft, velvety, almost creamy. There is also a lactonic nuance in the composition, as if it were a creamy matcha latte, even though there’s no milk listed in the notes. It’s that delicate, enveloping milky haze that makes the scent cozy and slightly gourmand, with a soft sweetness. In the background, there’s a light woody base that adds depth and turns the fragrance into more than just “tea in a cup”, it becomes a complete perfume. The woods are not sharp or resinous, but warm and slightly powdery, like a wooden spoon used to stir the matcha. If you love green tea in perfumery but are afraid of harshness or a “herbal salad” effect, Matchabuya is the perfect balance between realism and wearability. Gentle and meditative, for me, it’s pure pleasure from the very first spray.

So the brand proudly announced on their social media channels that 'the wait is over' and we'd be able to purchase Matchabuya online over the weekend. Specifically they said it would be available for 48 hours over Saturday and Sunday. Sounded great, those of us who were willing to blind buy could check it out at last. The part they didn't mention - there was an early access code to order it on Friday and it sold out before Saturday even began. They then proceeded to delete/hide all the messages from people who were unhappy at how it was handled! Call me crazy but that's a fine way to alienate prospective customers and leave a terrible impression of the brand. Sorry Fugazzi but whoever was in charge of the messaging and execution of the limited availability needs to be fired.
