Grass

My first review here, so I’ll try to do this justice. This is a lovely green scent. When first applied, you definitely get the “someone just mowed the lawn” smell you get when you open the windows on a warm spring or summer day. In fact, its made me sneeze a bit when I first put it on. That does not last long though. After only a few moments, it softens to something more like the scent that surrounds you as you lie in the soft grass of your yard, or a field, or a meadow... the sun is warm, and the grass is cool against your skin. It has just a bit of a sweetness, like an “almost hay” smell, but not musty, not hay that’s already been cut and dried, but tall, tall grasses that are just about ready to become hay. After about an hour, you’re left with a hint of the above. Just enough for you to personally smell it on yourself, but not enough for it to project that scent unless someone is standing and whispering in your ear. I love this fragrance – definitely a unisex – I can see this being worn by anyone, really. I wish it had better staying power, and a bit more drift. Wish it traveled a bit further from my skin. I even put a bit of spray on my clothing to see if I could increase the longevity and – it might have, but not by much. Its been about 1.5 hours since I applied it last and I can barely smell it. Maybe I’ve gone nose blind but... I think its just that *soft*. I’m thinking I want to layer this with some Demeter Lilac or even Dirt. I’ll need to try that another day though, I want to devote this day to this scent all on its own. Hopefully in the end, I don’t love it *that* much, or I find something I love a bit more, since its discontinued and I bought a partly used bottle off ebay just to give it a try. It’s a bit expensive for something that isn’t very long lasting and stays so close to the skin. But, I may just have to bite the bullet because it is that lovely!

I recently was at a Gap outlet with my 13 year old daughter and going through the checkout line I spotted it. Gap Grass! I almost shrieked I was so happy and surprised and my daughter nearly died of embarrassment at my giddiness. I picked up bottle took a sniff just of the atomizer and swooned! Plunked down the money for it without even a second thought. After leaving the store, I started to explain my excitement to my daughter. How this was the scent of my very late teens/early 20’s. It was the mid 90’s and life just felt so full of potential. This scent was both nostalgia for my childhood and forward looking to my future at the same time. With its scent of freshly mown grass while playing outside all summer long and having adventures in my neighborhood and not coming home till the street lights came on, in my early 20s I already missed those innocent days and the nostalgia was powerful. But it’s crisp, bright freshness also gave me a feeling of anything possible for my future. It was just so good! When my daughter and I left that outlet , I whipped open the bottle and sprayed myself right there (it was an open air mall) we both swooned! She loved the scent too. Now for the sad part... within 30 minutes of the dry down, this changed. For the worse. No more fresh cut grass. Now it was some woody, floral not at all fresh scent. I really wanted to cry. I returned it immediately. I went home that day looking on eBay for a vintage 90’s bottle. Cried some more tears at how expensive it is. They always say “you don’t know what you got till it’s gone “. Oh so true.

I wish I could return and give my 13 year old self this beautiful fragrance. It was after days camping at a concert festival in blazing hot Eastern Washington (State), on the way home...late July 2003. This was at an outlet mall, my family and my best friend stopped to shop. We had just spent 4 days in the literal desert. I recall how this smelled in my mind (this is a memory snippet, not a true review)...but the situation couldn't have been more striking. It was likely partially due to the experience of heat, dryness and camping (also concerts, sweaty bodies, greasy food...) but this was the freshest, cleanest, most wholesome scent to ever assail my nose. Wet grass, and yet, freshly mowed. Ozonic, aquatic, dripping wet clover sparkling with dew. Clean laundry, windy crisp air, and sunlight. I mean....it was a fragrance *moment*. But my friend?...She exclaimed - "Oh ewwww!!! It smells like you stepped in mud!" I was so embarrassed for loving this, I quickly sniffed it again and said something like - 'Oh yeah, it smells so gross...' I had no self-esteem at the time, I was an idiot kid. I wish I had stuck up for my taste and bought this when I had the chance. I've forgotten about it for years. This was surely excellent, and my impression of it certainly was, but the memory fills me with a pang of regret.

The summer of 1998 I think it was, dropping into Gap Paris after marauding Virgin Records. I grabbed a tin of Grass at the counter before we ventured out to Notre Dame, a small dab of the inexpensive gel on my chest, adding to the late afternoon vibes. Then walking in the rare air of the cathedral it suddenly came alive, projecting it’s fresh and urgent scent, enveloping me in a fragrance I’ve not experienced before or after. The smell of summer ‘98 on it’s way. Back home and a year later, the gel started to turn and I knew I’d never get it again. Gap wasn’t in the UK yet and so only another trip to France would get me closer to that experience again. Years have passed and I’m made up that this page exists at all, it has a fanbase, and not for no reason. It must be an accidental classic - a multinational dip into fragrances that actually had critical success, if only they’d listen. I’m here if that ozonise blast of comforting grass, lemon and fresh air ever materialises again, like something freshly picked from the Tuileries itself... a work of art.

I have a bottle of the new 2020 version as well as one from the early 2010's and compared them. To tell them apart: the new 2020 bottle is short and rounded at the top like a dome with a small silver cap. The 2010's bottle is tall and perfectly cylindrical, like a tube, with a clear plastic cap. I sprayed the 2020 on one wrist and the 2010's on another and compared. At first I was convinced the 2020 was no good because I didn't get a huge hit of that grassy note right away - the one that lives in my scent memory and is almost green-fruity like a green banana (to my nose anyway). But as I've used the 2020 more, the original Grass fragrance does come through, and I like it more and more. So if you're looking at buying one of the new 2020 bottles on eBay, or the 2010 bottle I say go for it! They are both true to the original.

Oh those memories of the mid-late 90's... :D I remember traveling to the USA in 1995 and finding this gemstone, I bought a small sample. The selection of perfumes wasn't that big in Eastern Europe that time, no internet and online shops yet. The next year my sister bought me a 100 ml bottle in London, and it became my summer signature scent. (My winter scent was Sun Moon Stars) I loved this perfume so much! I still have the bottle with a little remnant in it... The prefume itself has gone off unfortunately. This is pure GRASS as the name says, with some apple and green notes.

I have the 2020 style bottle of this. It doesn’t quite smell like I remember from the 90’s, but close. Or maybe I just don’t remember it that well or that my sense of smell is more refined now. It still has that grassy, fresh, cucumbery opening I remember but at the heart I smell more clean/soapy type notes than I recall before it fades into a light musk. It’s an EDT so it isn’t going to last all day, but I actually get about 3 hours or so good wear out of it before it becomes a barely there skin scent, but it’s still a great fresh light spring/summer clean scent

This stuff is amazing. One of a kind. Nothing ive smelled like it. Sweet, grassy, like fresh cut grass and sugar water, cucumber, crisp apple slices, and fresh picked strawberries. Really captures the 90s teenager scent. They sold these in small bottles back then for 7 or 8$, when I was buying carpenter shorts and long sleeve raglans at GAP, circa 1993, along with Heaven and Dream. Beware of jovan grass oil, which is equally as rare and expensive, but it smells awful, musky, gross, nothing like this stuff.. the best.

This is maybe my all-time favorite perfume. That probably sounds insane, but it's just so unbelievably clean, fresh, summery--- NOTHING else smells like this. I definitely get the mowed lawn but there's other things happening to support it and add to the complexity. I still have my original bottle from the 90s, it's half full, I will never ever ever get rid of it. Will be my life's quest to find more scents in this vein. Just utterly, hopelessly in love with this FOR 30 YEARS.

One of the few for me that lives on the good side of 90s nostalgia. Was a bit shocking at the time and every time smelling it, but all of the cool counter-culture activist yet studious people I wanted to be like seemed to smell like this. I have been reminded of a lot of 90s smells recently so it made me want to seek out a good one. Maybe one day we will get the original back so we can revisit and reawaken the best of those times.

If you love Leila Lou by Rosie Jane, the fresh cut grass scent is 1:1. I smell a more floral mid note like Jasmine after the initial whiff of grass. Save yourself the money and get this instead of Leila Lou! It’s nearly 1/3 the price and you get much more. It smells like what you should wear with a white tee and jeans after a fresh shower on a late spring evening! So effortless and chic.

The new formulation is NOTHING like the Gap Grass of the 90's. This is watered down, laundry detergent blah and boring. Don't waste your money. I was in love with the original Gap Grass in the metal travel bottle. The crisp, sweet apple, freshly cut grass and a hint of cucumber. Perfection! Bring back the old formulation!!!!!

The review under mine is exact and on point Banana and grass So realistic So refreshing Although bad in performance But the price to quality ratio is incredible So sad to see this go I found a bottle for a bargain So happy to own one even more f I won’t be able to wear it outside just after a shower would be ideal

Oh please, come back again, please! This delicious fragrance is nothing compare to others expensives in luxury bottles... This is a surprise, a fresh wind in the mountain grass in spring. But it is discontinued... Why? I loved this years ago, and now keep a little amount in the old glass for my doughter, someday.

This was my signature scent in HS. I can no longer find it anywhere. If I could purchase a truck load of this fragnace and hoard it I would. Sadly, that is not the case. It reminds me of wet grass and evocative of all everything I loved growing up.

Came back to say this: If you are missing Gap Grass, try Snif Golden Ticket (not on Fragrantica atm)! The first hour smells very much like Gap Grass with tea and like what the cool kids on the college campus would smell like. :-)

I loved The original ‘grass’ and would purchase it in a heartbeat if they brought it back, formula unchanged. It literally smelled like fresh cut grass. Very crisp, green, a bit citrusy. Loved it

Had this fragrance years ago and would love to own a bottle once more - the smell of freshly-cut grass and a hint of banana was an absolute delight.

I love this so much. Its so green and grassy but still sweet without being cloying. Soothing and fresh. Every perfume I love is discontinued!! :(

Fresh, unique. Scent of fresh cut grass with soft musk. I dont understand how they still sell many of the Gap scents except this one.

Nothing comes close to Gap grss. I tried for so long to find it again but no dice. Wish they would bring it back.

Guess what folks? I managed to locate a family owned and operated perfumery called "The Fragrance Shop" (located in NORTH CAROLINA). I purchased two scents: "Oil of Grass" and D&G "BY Type" oils. I then blended them together and voila -- The original 90's "Grass Gap" came alive! I highly suggest that you check out their site. Their blends are all made with oil and last long. Dry oil, lotion, etc., but best of all SAMPLER option with rebate! PS: check out their "Gypsy Water" scent...OMG!

Tested out the re-release version while I was waiting to check out. On first spray it is FOUL - I was seriously regretting letting it get anywhere near my skin. Luckily for me, after a minute or two it eased into a very pleasant soft/musky green fragrance.

i can't compare to the old formula, but this one absolutely smells like fresh mowed grass to me. it gets a little annoying on its own, since it's pretty strong and one-note, but i really like layering it with other scents to make them a little more green.

First thing I thought When sniffing this was wow it's sweet. I expected something harsher but was pleasantly surprised. It's a good, cheap grass scent according to me.

never smelled old formula but i just tested the current eau de toilette-- very fresh, lots of green apple and cucumber coming through for me. i'm getting the laundry detergent vibe (maybe the clover?) some other reviews have mentioned, but i don't hate it! would be a really nice post-shower smell when you want to feel refreshed. makes me envision a very clean, type-A girl, who wears only white linen, with a tight, slicked back ponytail and the glossiest skin you've ever seen. which is to say, not me lmao

Not actually grass. Green aquatic with a hint of well blended cucumber and green apple. The opening is unbearable but the dry down is cleaner

Can only add my praise for this unique fragrance along with my sorrow & disbelief that it's never come back. Mind you, it was hard enough to get in the UK anyway & our stores discontinued it (along with the whole range) long before the US. The scent ? It's a dream of summer; the smell of grass that's only exists in our imagination. It's the meadow Julie Andrews danced across. Believe me, I've eagerly tried other grass scents but they smell ,well, just of grass. I admit my emotional reaction maybe as much due to the first time I wore it ( one of my first breaks with my partner, madly in love, a perfect but very hot week in Stratford on Avon, sitting on the grass outside the RSC, beside the Avon, oblivious to the crowds around us. Ahem, back to perfume: well, I struggle with scents for hot weather (I'm an English/Celtic mix, I wilt above 21C ) I'm usually all about aldehydes,woods & powdery scents better suited inmho to cool weather."Old Lady" stuff (well,I am now,so finally grown into them). Think pre-1980 or most Guerlain to go even further back (AP & N.Rodreguez being rare,modern exceptions ). Full-bodied scents best worn after dark. So,I was stuck for something appropriate for day (my go-to was,& still is O de Lancome but I'd not packed it) So I needed a cheap & cheerful stop-gap (pardon the pun) &, by chance, found this little miracle ! I still have a few mls left - strictly to smell when I need a little shot of summer-loving ! PS my first review

Was hoping I was going to love this, as it really sounds up my alley. Unfortunately, it’s not me. I’m not sure if it’s the whole composition, or the cucumber. I get whiffs of notes I like (I love green and fresh scents), but then I get a wet smell and it’s earthy and odd. Oh well. I bought a vintage bottle, one of the mini .5 oz metal spray bottles for very cheap. I was going to keep this for my collection, but my best friend who was a teenager in the 90s is the one responsible for bringing this fragrance to my attention. She mentioned liking it and not smelling another fragrance like it, so I’m giving this to her for her birthday and hoping it will bring back some memories from those times 😊 Update: Gave it to my best friend for her birthday, and I saw tears swell up in her eyes as memories flooded back to her. Such power a perfume can hold. 🥀

I have the same frosted bottle with white plastic cap pictured above, and I've owned three of this bottle style throughout the years of this amazing fragrance. Obviously the smell of grass is prominent, but the note I feel is underrated here is the water lily. There's also something vaguely dryer sheets about it as well, but that's more of a passing association that comes to me when I'm dissecting what I smell. Very watery and dewy. After it wears for a bit it becomes more and more clean and musky, almost soapy, but not in a way that takes from the best parts which is the grassy-watery profile. That cucumber listed is giving off slight watermelon vibes without being all-out fruity. I'll often spray this on the back of my hand before going to bed as I find it to be an extremely calming fragrance.

I paid out the a**** for a 90's one, unused new in box on Ebay and......... it's SO worth it! lol. All I ever had years ago was the half ounce tins that lingered around Ebay for a bit but are mostly all gone now. This smells exactly like those. So purely clean and grassy, no sweetness whatsoever, nothing floral. Almost all the notes you see listed here you can pick out. This smells like fresh, outdoorsy, uncomplicated preteen/ teenage summers. I have a 2020 from the outlet. At first, both scents are similar. The new one dries down to something a lot more floral imo. The old one never had that. It barely changes. Both are worth having, and if you aren't comparing particularly, the new one is pleasant and still a bit unique.

Back when I was a teenager, and malls were still a “thing” that doubled as teenage hotspots, and my friends and I would meander from one end to another without a purpose or care in the world... And between slices of Sbarro at the food court, and complaining about how strict our parents were, and the snickers at inside jokes and adolescent crushes, and trying on clothes we’d never purchase... I’d head into Gap just to smell Grass, a freshly cut lawn, the natural world, an addictive pull, so jarring to my naïve nose in that air-conditioned commercial wasteland. I wish I’d have bought a bottle when I could. Even just recalling the scent brings so many adolescent memories to the forefront of my mind.

Incredibly natural and realistic smell of lawn and clover, I would never believe it is possible to re-create even by most expensive niche house. Sounds weird, but it smells even more realistic, than the actual grass. Gap did it in their body mist! May-June's fresh, bright, green grass under the huge blue sky, excitement of an astronaut, who just have landed on beloved Earth, after a long time into open space, or creation of last Earth inhabitants, that are leaving for another planet after some explosion and who want to save in memories of next generations how good old Earth smelled like... Very thankful to great fragrantica-girl for this gift and for the eyes opening!

JackieM below writes a perfect review !! The re-issued grass is only slightly like the original one. I remember going gaga over this when it came out in the 90's. Smelled just like a freshly mown lawn in the spring. Very green and fresh. People would compliment me and say "you smell just like GRASS" ! The new one is much more floral. It opens nice and green, but then dries down to something much more floral and perfume like. The original stayed true to green throughout. Its a shame they changed it, but it still manages to bring you back to that original green juice !

I am just sad that of the first 4 Gap scents: Earth, Day, Heaven, and this scent Grass... my favorite is Earth and they don't even have the scent on here like the others!!! I have some left, bought the next to last one on ebay and even got the one by scent matchers. Yet, I can't see the notes/accords on here. :( Ah well, I guess it makes it even more alluring. At least I can spray my matched scent all over and use the real ones sparingly. It smells like a strong burst of clean soap with a hint of pine/sage. Anyone know this scent? Thanks! ~J

I just found a small bottle of this, original aluminum, half ounce, about half full, in my drawer. Smells like bananas a little bit, then a wonderful fresh laundry drydown with the gentle grassy notes of course. Wonder why this one was not selected for reformulation. I have the new Heaven, and it smells pretty close. Aluminum perfume bottles are just so cool, lightweight, and 90s. Wish I had stocked up back then.

I bought it as second-handed. I didnt expect it would smell like this. I really like it. First time i smell this i thought its little sweety to me. but after first spray it becomes greener, and musky. If i spary 5-6 times, it's really fine. it is really pleasant scent but won't last long. my body especially hold perfume longer than the others, so i can feel the scent about 8hours i guess. LIGHT GREEN / ★★★★☆

Please see what VIOLET VIOLIN wrote below. My sentiments exactly. ! Whenever they reformulated this, it changed it dramatically. This new iteration is NOTHING like the original. It used to smell just like a freshly mown lawn in the summer ! Now it smells like a generic floral with some grass highlight and some woodsy base thrown in. It’s pleasant, and I’ll wear it, but it’s a far cry from what it used to be.

i remember reading a thing about how years ago all the hippies were planning to encircle the pentagon and meditate in an effort to levitate it and thusly bring about world peace. if only the fragrance community could harness that enthusiasm and focus their intentions on bringing back gap grass what a glorious world this would be.

The original Grass had almost a metallic smell but in the very best way.. it was a potent scent. This new one doesn’t stand up to the old one. Zara’s Waterlilly Tea Dress is a much better scent than 09’s Gap Grass. It smells more like the original than this comeback one does. It also costs about the same or maybe even less.

If you have ever smelled the scent of green, unripened banana, then you would absolutely fell in love with this. Photorealistic green banana without being too synthetic. Klubwasser by Wienerbrut is similar, but at a much higher price point. If you can get your hands on the old formulation, then hold on to it for dear life.

LOVE!!! ----I always loved mowing the lawn barefoot (dangerous, I know...). Liked the wet green stains on my feet and that fantastic sweet smell of fresh cut healthy grass. Nothing says summer like that. And this composition captured that feeling in a bottle. Too bad it is gone F-O-R-E-V-E-R

So many rave reviews, but I think it is just too laundry-like on my skin. Love that it is crisp and not at all sweet, imo. I have an original glass bottle from the 90s that I bought on eBay and that is 3/4 full. I am now looking to sell! Message me and we can talk.

Ahhh, the summer of 1994. A gust of wind, a way-too-sugary strawberry flavored soda, some Nirvana. GAP Grass covering up the 'sandal smell' of Teva shoes... Has a 50/50 sport/cute persona and can be worn by virutally anyone.

Oh my days how I loved this. When I saw the reviews I thought they may still do it, sadly not. It is very 90's and if I smelled it now it would just take me back. Freshly cut grass, heaven! 90's loves all gone now.

Just curious if anyone has tried this since they re-released it (not sure when they did it, saw it on eBay)? It looks like the only one they didn't bring back is Earth - loved that one too.

As many have said the new formula just isn't the same. However, this new version of grass does remind me of the the original Curve from back in the day so I'm not completely mad at it.

This scent is a 10/10. My husband's favorite on me. I still have an OG bottle (actually an aluminum container). Great fragrance.
