Johnny

Johnny was relaunched in 2022, in a Parfum Extrait concentration, following the production partnership signed between Gentleman’s Nod and Mane. However, Johnny was one of the first fragrances marketed by the brand within the Legacy collection (along with ERNEST, GEORGE, and JACKIE), through the work initiated by the founder with fragrances applied to shaving products, not for the body. Its name pays homage to Johnny Cash, an American country singer and songwriter, who became known for his voice, his free shows in prisons, and his nickname “Man in Black”, due to his style of clothing. The new formulation, with a 27% concentration, has top notes of bergamot, lemon, lime, green apple, and Timur pepper. In the body, notes of jasmine, rosewood, cedar, and tonka bean are listed, while the base brings notes of amber, vanilla, patchouli, vetiver, and musk. With a creative concept aimed at those who don't fit into other people's expectations and feel comfortable with that, Johnny's fragrance aims for silent rebellion but hits on the noisy popularity. On my skin, the opening brings that typical apple note used in men's perfumery. Luckily, the lemon breaks the sweetness and the black pepper from Nepal brings a citrusy spiciness, due to its facets that remind us of the grapefruit smell. Although listed in the center of the pyramid, the tonka bean is very present in this creation, since the beginning, and the rosewood gives an immense woody and floral content during its evolution. Here, the fragrance starts to become more pleasant for my taste, but it still hasn't shown its confident personality. As time passes, the vanilla and amber notes emerge and begin to exhale over everything else, even drowning out the woody smell of the fragrance which, in my opinion, is the anchor of salvation. There's plenty of sweetness and much of the earthy profile of vetiver is missing, which would make the dry down much more interesting. But it's worth highlighting the smoky effect that lasts hours on the skin. Jhonny's fragrance is youthful, exudes in a medium way, and has great durability. It follows the woody-fruity-amber style that reminds me of other more commercial ones, like Acqua di Giò Absolu, for example (which manages to be even fresher and more aromatic). Personally, I confess that I was a little disappointed. I don't see it as something special, nor on par with the other fragrances of the brand. Thinking critically, I understand that its fragrance will appeal to young people who are starting to take care of their beard and men's skincare routine. But it seems to me like a perfume that doesn't build loyalty and that's bad.
