Curzon Cologne

I want to say that *this* is what a cologne should smell like. A beautiful balance between zesty citrus and earthy oakmoss which gets honeyish from the labdanum in the dry down. I don't get any similarity to Floris 89, though; this has no rose note and isn't even particularly floral. It's possible to love them both though. I'll definitely be trying more from Trumper. (I didn't like Wellington by the way.) This manages to be a chypre, 35 years before Coty Chypre, so we should be calling the bergamot/labdanum/oakmoss style a "Curzon". Obviously I have no idea what it was actually like in 1882 but whichever perfumer managed to reformulate this to maintain the oakmoss note following the heavy IFRA restrictions on it deserves a round of applause.

A highly enjoyable barbershop-type cologne in a charming splash bottle. I agree that Curzon Cologne has a sense of being skilfully crafted from absolutely natural ingredients. Moreover, if you love Azzaro Pour Homme, then Curzon Cologne is definitely worth a try as I think they smell very similar with that famously uplifting mossy signature note. However, Curzon Cologne replaces the Gallic flair of Azzaro with a classic British sartorial elegance that makes it a terrific office fragrance, in the spring & summer especially. Forget Dunhill London-Pursuit-51.3N, as Curzon Cologne is much better than those and is highly recommended for those who seek a real British gentlemen's scent that is intriguingly traditional AND modern.

This is the cologne I buy for my inamorato, and the only one I let him wear (he has no nose for scents). It's a powerful, leathery, very manly scent that reeks of class. Superb longevity and astounding projection. We decant into one of those little plastic travel bottles from Boots for ease of application (it comes in a splash bottle), and two sprays lasts all day and all night. When he wears this, nobody can ever smell what I'm wearing. Grrr! Stout and sturdy stuff. The Rt Hon. the Marquess of Curzon, Viceroy of India, would have approved... Don't be put off by its age, it still works thanks to a sweet and spicy note that pervades the whole creation and lasts throughout. Classics are classic for a reason.

The bergamot shows up for all of 10 seconds before this goes to an Oakmoss middle that is quite strong. Within 1 hour, this fades into a light oakmoss, labdanum, and spice base where it stays for quite a long time. Interestingly, the base feels a lot like it has a sandalwood note even though that is not a listed note. Longevity is excellent as it lasts easily 10 hours on me. While the opening reminds me slightly of Eucris, the base notes are far more reminiscent of (discontinued) Penhaligon's Douro.

Today I am briefly testing Trumper's drier, more leathery offerings Astor, Curzon, Eucris and Marlborough together. It took me a few tries to distinguish them. Curzon is sweeter and woodier, smoke with honey. Drydown is a gentle, Preferred Stock or Santos type smoke and wood or incense, with judicious but effective spices. The sweetest of these, but well within reason. Improvement over Floris Elite.

I've worn this for several years and adore it. Many colleagues (and students) have asked what it is as it is certainly a cut above the massed produced aromas (indeed) out there. Agree that it is vaguely reminiscent of my grandfather but there's no substitute for a classic.

If this were more easily available in the US (or even on-line), I might buy a bottle, and the next time I go to the UK I'll seriously consider it. This is a classic leather chypre, stripped down to its basic elements, with some appealing spices thrown in for good measure. The bergamot at the top disappears within seconds, and what remains is quite dry--oakmoss, labdanum, a strong sharp leather note, maybe a little patchouli (?), and lots of spices (caraway certainly among them). I'm especially impressed with the work they did with the oakmoss: the scent of it in this is pronounced, but there's actually very little in here (which I can tell because real oakmoss always makes my eyes water, which this does not). This is a great grown-up fragrance if you would want to impress people at work. It's stern and authoritative, but also intriguing. I would certainly be curious to see how this differs from the original 19th-c. fragrance of this name: though they had chypres back in the day, they were not at all common in the UK in the 1880s.

I called at Trumpers in Duke of York Street yesterday and tried this whilst replenishing a supply of another (Milk of Flowers). I rate Curzon highly too. The citrus opening is very pleasant, fresh and natural. It rapidly settles to reveal a classy heart of oakmoss and patchouli. Not having much projection, it has lasted well over eight hours on me on a cool December day in England. To be clear: I love patchouli, labdanum, and oakmoss scents anyway. I can only assume it is the quality of the oils which distinguish this from scents of pretty similar composition. So I'm not sure why this has never been on my shelf. Possibly because I just love Eucris, Sandalwood and Milk of Flowers so much and never tire of their enduring appeal. For sure there are other scents that are broadly similar. The fact is that Curzon is a stand-alone high quality offering. Be assured: this is another wonderful creation by the most English of institutions.

Curzon is an absolutely gorgeous masculine scent. Due to its age it will seem unusual in this era of fruity metrosexual bubblegum fragrances but that's what gives it its charm. I have the EDC splash bottle, and if applied sparingly it sits close but is noticeable, it's the kind of cologne that will have people stating you smell good as opposed to saying that you have a nice cologne. A younger guy wearing this at something like a job interview or wedding would stand out as being classy and a gentleman. Some people sometimes compare this with the original Dunhill for Men and I can see where they're coming from, both are classic manly scents, I'd say Dunhill's offering has a stronger floral focus whereas Curzon is centred around the citrus and spice combination. In any rate both are fantastic and worth a try. Nice!

Great, rich shaving soap quality and smell, though Chypre, not a Fougere. There are similar veins running through the three Trumper fragrances i own, but just the right amount of difference in each one to make each unique.

Very like Floris No. 89, although Trumper got there long before. Less powdery than No. 89, but the same very masculine, musky scent with a hint of honey. In my view the superior version.

Green citrus, spice, dry, old-fashioned, not sweet. Pretty good.

Classic men's cologne, a bit sharp and heavy as to caraway, there are some similarities to Astor, suitable for an evening on a special occasion for mature men.

I picked up a sample of this the other day, and loved it as soon as I tried it. But, I realized it smells similar to something else on my fragrance shelf-- good old Stetson original. So, I did a side-by-side, and I was right, they are very nearly identical. The Stetson is maybe the tiniest bit more powdery, and the Curzon a bit more spicy, but otherwise they are very close. Still, I'm tempted to pick up a bottle of the Curzon in addition to my Stetson because the subtle difference between them is an important distinction. To me, Stetson is something I'll wear with my blue Levi's and boots. Curzon is something I might wear with a suit. It's like a more formal version of Stetson, basically.

A lot of colognes, especially designer ones have this cloying synthetic quality. They smell nice but often overpower a room with cinnamon, musk, aquatic notes etc. Curzon is made with essential oils and has a real sense of being crafted rather than mass-produced. It is superbly blended and evokes a sense of style and cleanliness, a proper man's fragrance without pretentions or claims to be something it is not. Well made, clean, masculine. In a hectic world, simplicity is sometimes best. In this case, there's no doubt.

Wearing this today, although I bought it as an Xmas pressie for my beau. He finds it a bit too sweet, but I don't and find that dissipates quickly anyway into a lovely soft leather, spicy and warm touch of class.The oakmoss isn't particularly pronounced on my skin and I agree with reviewers who think it akin to Penhaligon's Douro, which I love. I wear that on Summer evenings, and this will follow suit. Refined and dignified. Class is timeless.

This is NOTHING like Stetson, well unless a Kia is like a Cadillac...they’re both automobiles. If this were in a Tom Ford bottle, it would be sold for $500 a bottle and the fragheads would have rituals over it. Geo F. Trumper’s fragrances: Astor, Curzon, Marlboro, and Eucris are some of the best in the world. I’m astonished that more people don’t talk about these.

This perfume may seem old, but it is not so. mature scent, aromatic, spicy fresh, perfect for those who want to feel like men of the nineteenth century.
